  • Hello pen friends!
    I have an interesting little anomaly here today. The Yookers Eros uses fountain pen ink, and a standard International converter, but is it a fountain pen? This one has a surprise inside the cap.
    I originally bought this one on Goulet, but actually, the best price comes from ordering it directly from Yookers:

    If you’re looking for an O-ring that fits on this pen, PenBBS makes a repair kit that has one that worked for me:

    Nice! Reminds me of my Rotring Isographs. I love the precision nibs like this offer for line work. 🔥

      I got a set of Rotring Isographs (that were pretty messed up) from my dad a few years ago. I’m thinking I need to chronicle my restoration of said pens on this channel soon.

    I was able to restart my Yookers after 2 years. The ink had vanished, the tip was bone dry, but after submerging it in water for a couple of minutes, it worked fine.

    I think the line width will be influenced by the viscosity of the ink used

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  4 месяца назад +1

      Of course. Also the paper type, along with the nib size and type. I tend to have inks with similar viscosity though. I’m not a big fan of extra viscous inks, as I don’t think they’re good for my nibs.

    Have you tried other “nontraditional” pens that use fountain pen ink like the other Yookers ( Gaia, Métis, Elios) or the Monteverdi Engage? Kakimira Roller Ball? Also, any special products you like to clean hands from fountain pen ink?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  4 месяца назад

      I have not tried any other pens from Yookers, but I really want to try the budget model (the Yooth) to see how it stacks up. I know for a fact that I won’t like the Métis, because it has a huge stepdown, which I’m not a fan of.
      I have tried the Pilot V5 ( there’s a version which takes Pilot converters and cartridges) which I loved, although people have told me that the tip is quite fragile, I haven’t had a lot of problems with it. I have tried J.Herbin’s rollerball, which was also quite good, and I can recommend it. The only other pen like this that I have tried was the PenBBS 350, which I really did not like, although that had more to do with the body design than the tip. You can find all those videos on my channel if you want to know more.
      As far as cleaning ink? I mostly just use soap and water, and let friction do the rest. Only fingers don’t really bother me, as long as the ink isn’t spreading to clothes, artwork, and other things I value more than my fingers.

    Stephen, do you journal? I know that you are a talented artist. But, I never see you journal with the FPs.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +1

      I do, but not as often as I would like. I have found journaling to be really great for both the creative process and my mental health. The problem is that o don’t have the regular habit, and with my busy lifestyle, it tends to go to the back of my to-do list. I used to journal and doodle in the same book. A bit of an over-romanticized version of journaling, but it was fun to do.

    I’ve also found a pen that has a converter that is a fine roller ball type pen that’s actually quite good and doesn’t have a tip that can dry out like those type pens with fiber tips.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yookers actually sells those tips if you’re interested in the pen for the body alone. I’ve done a video on a similar tip, for the J. Herbin rollerball. It’s not bad, but I’m more inclined to use a fountain pen all other things being equal.

      @@stepheninks agreed about fountain pens overall. But the pens I have are made on a Lamy style body. And under $5. lol.

      Less mess, for sure. I usually get a hard start when I have to do that though. Pretty obvious that would happen, but you know… everything has pluses and minuses.

    If you use very hot or boiling water it works better and quicker.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад

      That’s a good tip (pun intended)! I think for this type of pen, boiling water is no problem, but I might be a bit cautious with super hot water on a pen with a plastic feed or something made with a more delicate material like a vintage fountain pen. My pens have never warped due to heat, but I have heard horror stories!

    I think you said you had this for a year, how has the tip held up? Another entertaining video review.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, I bought it during the holidays last year. The tip is some type of pour out plastic, as opposed to true fiber. It looks the same and functions the same as the day I got it (except for the color stains)

    Can you recommend a brand or size of o rings?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  4 месяца назад

      Not really a size or brand (I do t really know much about o rings) but PenBBS sells a pretty reasonably priced pen repair kit on their Etsy page. That’s where I have the set I use. It also includes some rubber washers and converters that work with their pens, but I think it’s worth it just for the o rings. You get a lot, in various sizes and materials.

    • @jeffreyclayman6922
      @jeffreyclayman6922 4 месяца назад

      @@stepheninks so have you used this repair kit from Pen BBS specifically for the Yookers?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  4 месяца назад

      @@jeffreyclayman6922 you know, when I saw this message, I realized that I never actually tried it, despite wanting to, since the pen does function perfectly fine (even though the section needs to be tightened sometimes), so I pulled the kit out and I gave it a try.
      Basically, yes, it does work, but only with the smallest and thinnest o-ring in the kit. Otherwise, the o-ring will interfere with the internal magnet’s ability to catch on to the cap.
      Feels like a whole new pen now. I can’t believe I waited this long to try it. I wish Yookers had thought to do this in the first place though…

    I have better luck dipping the nib in the ink rather than in water.
    Thanks for the show. Personally I don't like the feel of drawing with a non-metal nib. To me they feel disturbingly fragile, and dry.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  9 месяцев назад +1

      I will say that these nibs are made of super tough stuff. I usually bend/destroy micron nibs before they even run out of ink. But these nibs are actually on the hard side. Definitely on the dry side, so it’s probably not gonna be for you.
