- My husband is in the Army and I am a military spouse. When I first got married, I remember be overwhelmed by the name change process and all the documents you had to get updated with the military. I waited for a while before getting my milso ID card and I actually could have gotten it way sooner! I just got engaged on March 30th and our wedding is already coming on May 27th! I've been such a mess trying to find as much information as possible to make my transition into DEERS smoother! Were gunna be PCSing to Georgia in December and all the documents need to be submitted by July the latest so I can get on his orders! This was so helpful! Thank you so much!

I must add that if you are foreign, you also need to have your birth certificate for housing and the ID. I’m Canadian and just married a marine and I’m adjusting my status. It’s not easy at all
Wow!! My husband and i are from PR were currently in Ft Carson but its nit compulsory to have your husband last name if you dont want to.
Thank you for sharing this info! We married a month ago and I don't know what I'm doing. I figured their would be lots of paperwork but I didn't what forms or where to find them. I've been trying to do some research before I call the base's family services for help/direction. I didn't even know what questions to ask other than please help me! Doesn't help that he is deploying soon and we have a baby on the way. I'm feeling a lot of pressure and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't stressed and scared.

Yes! You have to change your name on your social security card before going to DEERS to get your dependent ID. That said, often DEERS will accept your paperwork confirming the change rather than making you wait a month to get the physical new card in the mail. Good luck!
