  • I’ve been a big gamer my entire life, and while too much gaming and gaming addiction are very real problems, many studies show that playing video games actually has several health benefits, as long as you don’t overdo it. Turns out playing Fortnite, Minecraft, or even classic RPG’s can benefit your social life and even your grades!

I was going down hill, with chains, slowly pumping at the breaks and still slide out. We ending up spinning around to face traffic. There was a semi coming down the hill. Because of the grade and snow the were having a hard time getting down the hill and wouldn't have been able to stop. I literally had just enough time to back up, turn around, and start driving again. Can't relate. I don't use video games to forget about anxiety. I have learned enough from them that the moment you have anxiety, you make sure to destroy it right then and there. I play video games for fun and to improve my mental health and it's been working quite well. I have improved a lot.

This is a perfect example of why they said in my group therapy class not to use your hobby as a form of escapism rather than relaxation.
When you play video games to escape your anxiety, it simply comes back with a vengeance once the gaming is over with.
When you play them as an activity of enjoyment and relaxation, they complement your mental health instead of placing a temporary mask over your disorder(s).
So it's important to learn other coping mechanisms and strategies, plus engaging in exposure therapy so that you're not simply hiding from your fears, but actively engaging them in order to build up courage.

Yeah, I absolutely could read more scientific research about it as there's a lot of it already - but 1) I would gladly hear dr. Mike's opinion on this, as I know at least a bit the research behind it already; and 2) video form of information from someone so easy to understand yet relatable as dr. Mike is much better way of educating those less willing to read research and more willing to judge just because "gaming is bad".

30 years ago, this is the argument I used to convince my mom to let me play video games. I talked about the reaction time and in games like Zelda, there were a lot of puzzles and reading of text. She actually saw it as a valid argument and it worked. I'm still shocked that at 10 years old I was able to think of this. But I was determined to play games. lol

I think my parents were happy enough that I made friends to talk about Sims3 with 😂
      - They weren't so happy about shooters (well, my mom wasn't). She also thinks everything is a game about just randomly shooting everything (I can't translate "Ballerspiele" and their negative connotation.)
      - They are still confused about flight sims.
      - Even more confused about ATC simulation (which I'd argue isn't really a game anymore.)
They didn't mind most nintendo ds games, including Pokémon. I do miss my pony friends games.
