I am 48 (semi retired) and have decided to study Google Data Analytics course to hopefully do something useful with my life. Thank you for the advice as I didn't know you could learn Python that's tailored for DA. I had problems understanding Python as some beginner lessons do not go the extra mile of clearly explaining things in more detail.

Not only do you work with things that are toxic, you can also work in labs like pathology where a lot of the staff get cancer from the fumes. Its a high stress job, if we make a mistake someone could die.

I am new to the idea of becoming a Data Analyst. My dear friend just recently landed a entry-level position with Accenture, after being a (paid) intern for a year. He was making 48K with no prior experience and no degree; only having a certificate from the General Assembly bootcamp. Now, in his current position, of just one year, he is making more than 75K in Chicago! He loves his job and works remotely, 90% of the time. He learned CSS, HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, React, MongoDB, Express, Ruby, Ruby on Rails and Fullstack applications. He believes I have the aptitude for this field. However, I know he's tech savvy and me, not so much...he's 41 and I am 52. We both have had major struggles in life trying to find out what we want to do in our careers. We both have had jobs in car sales/finance, dance and health industries and various odd jobs. I recently became a Flight Attendant, love the free flying benefits but hate having to be away from home so much...I'm so torn. I don't know if my brain is capable of retaining all the vast, complex information and/or if I'm talented enough for this ever changing, competitive industry.

If it was easy, everyone would do it! I recently made a video on How I'd Learn Python for Data Analysis, where I shared my failures and struggles of learning it. I actually failed the first time I attempted it.

There are many people doing what you want to do that are smarter than you, but there are also a lot of people doing it that might not be as smart. The real difference is how much they believed in themselves. Go for it, if you think it’s something you will enjoy then you’ll definitely be successful.

Hi Mo- thanks for this content. Can you talk more about the journey and how long it took you to land your first data analyst job? I think that information is crucial as well to let people understand the realistic expectations and the process of landing a job. I know they vary from case to case, but the process is pretty difficult and challenging.
Also- I agree to focus on one programming language, however, I am realizing that data analysts focus on excel and sql more in their day to day jobs with the exception of Python and BI tool here and there for deeper project analysis ( depending on the company and it’s dataset velocity )

    • @mo-chen

Hello, great question! It took me just under 4 years to get my first proper data analyst job. I have however been in roles that involved working with data ever since I began my career in the Financial Services Industry. My job title now if officially Data & Analytics Analyst, but I've been handling lots of financial data long before I got my current role. Even when you're a DA, knowing the business context matterrs. But like you said, it can be very different for everyone. Say for example within Finance, we have model developers (people who develop, test and implement financial models that drive lending / strategic / business decisisons) - they're not data analysts by their title, but they'd certainly have the skills to do the job as they need to understand the maths, know the Banking industry and be able to code. Which tools / languages you use on a daily basis will be completely dependent on what role you're doing and for whom. One thing for sure, Excel will never go away wherever you are. No matter how good you're coding skills are, people will always ask you this question: 'Can I get this in Excel?'. Thanks a lot for watching : )

Pretty good video! I've been trying to change career into data analytics for a few months now, and I am in the process of sending CVs to companies. I have recently followed a master so I could eventually update myself with the basics of Python for Data Science, MySQL and Tableau.
As I am probably guilty of sticking to much with Python for data analysis and visualization (for some reason I find it more fun), I just wanted to know how to apply SQL on a project.
As I understand, SQL should be ideal for organizing data and for relating data, but how do you integrate SQL to Python for instance? I'd like to get some help onto that, as I so far have used quite few Kaggle datasets and did everything strictly through Python, kinda setting Excel and SQL aside (which you both suggest being the 'house foundation' for a data analyst).
    Thank you very much!

Hi 69nukee, it's great to hear that you're already very proficient coding in Python. You can integrate postgresql, mysql or sqlite into Python very easily. Hi Abhijeet, anywhere between 5-10 projects is ideal. Make sure your projects showcase a variety of skills (i.e. all the great things that you've been learning over the past 6 months). You could say for example find an interesting dataset (or multiple datasets) on Kaggle, clean and manipulate the data as you see fit using numpy and pandas (and any other relevant libraries), and create visualisations using matplotlib / seaborn or build dynamic, user-friendly dashboards in Tableau / Power BI. And many many thanks for watching the video!

For the sole purpose of bettering my life and learning data analytics, I've bought new laptop since the old one was very faulty and slow and I'm planning to genuinely start from zero. Yes, motivation goes away sometimes especially if you're alone or doing this at home so it will be really great if someone also wants to join me on this journey....if there's someone just starting out and also want someone to be constantly reminded of the progress...i think by sharing progress and telling each other what it needs to be done, we will progress faster than average. So let me know when anyone is interested.... It would be faster to learn together, maybe in a group and sharing useful information

Hi Ashley, first of all thank you so much for watching : ) I'd say start by identifying what kind of coding you want to learn. If you want to become a software engineer, the coding skills needed will be very different from that of a data analyst. But, if you'd like to become a data analyst, I'd highly suggest starting with working with data in Excel, then moving onto SQL and BI tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau) and then some coding language (I prefer Python).
