  • This channel is for educational purposes only. The methods taught in these video's are just a few of many ways to do construction. Use your best judgement of what will work best for you and what is required by code in your area.
    In this video I brought on a buddy to help us build a dormer. Although I probably could've done this with just me and my guys...I know that it would have taken much longer because none of us are actually true carpenters and Matt definitely is. Needed to knock it out quickly and we definitely did that with his help and expertise. He was kind enough to let me film and teach us all a few things along the way so I hope you guys enjoy and AS ALWAYS.

    Good Bless you guys. Thank you for posting this. This is just what I need to take on building two gable dormers on the front of our house. I built two large shed dormers on the back bedroom one on each side, but gables are in a league of their own. This gave me the confidence to tackle this in the spring. Thanks again. I belive i have watched all your you tube videos. Love the roofing videos.

    Rafters always mess me up, because I don't do them often enough for it to be second nature. I always have to try a few times before I get it right (and ruin a few boards). I've looked up many videos explaining it, but none have explained it as well as this one for me. Most videos just tell you what to do, not why you do it. Matt explained each step and why. Awesome video.

    "keep the sub facia 3/4 inch off the decking for the shingles to slide in"
    I had to do that on my own roof recently, where the "fly rafter" of the main gable meets a smaller gable of an addition. I cut the fly rafter short, so that shingles for the lower gable could be put under the end of it.

      The rain falling from roof to roof in the same spot all the time will wear the shingles in those spots faster than the rest of the roof and eventually it could become very noticeable. The downspout elbows placed just above the lower roof absorbs that force.

    Good job flashing in the dormer. I'm looking for your video on flashing a roof wall junction . I dont believe this joint can be waterproof unless the siding, or stucco is removed. I say no way to reuse step shingles. I think ice and water needs to go up the wall everytime. Any roofing job with rip off shingles and not taking off siding is a failure in progress. Prove me wrong. I think this should be illegal for roofers to do to customers. Loved your window j channel video. Your mind thinks how to shorten the job. I'm similar

    • @manifestmetalroofing
      @manifestmetalroofing Год назад

      Code says All rusted, deteriorated flashing must be replaced. Always replace all flashing. With stucco, it’s impossible to properly flash under existing. Only way is to remove and have stucco guy come back in behind roof install. Most ppl don’t want to spend the time or money to do it right though

    Hey brother i am just getting into the $$ part of the business. What would you pay youre subcontractors to do a 8foot by 3foot skylight,
    We have to frame in the entire curb before installation i would think about 225$ per curb

    do you need a permit if I want to do something like that on my house?

    • @NWIVeteranConstruction

      I'm willing to bet yes. Depends on the area. But I would say most places would want you pull a permit when adding framing or changing existing. Might want to Call your Town building department to be sure

    so...how do I take a 6 wide by 8 deep porch with a gable roof and turn it into an 8" deep x 50" long porch that has a lean to roof but tie it into the origonal small gable roof? it's on a ranch style home, but I dont want to tear down any existing structure! HELP!!!!

    • @NWIVeteranConstruction
      @NWIVeteranConstruction  3 года назад

      It sounds really doable. Prolly pour footers and/ or concrete and the use that for the columns to support obviously. Get some headers and cut rafters to whatever pitch you want the lean to at. ( prolly easier if your existing roof is a bit steep. Like a 7/12 or so. And then your rafters would just terminate into the existing reverse gable. At least that's what I think...lol prolly ask Matt though haha
