Gary, love your videos. Sorry for this long post. Thank you for your insightfulness with seed starting. I really want to start my own seeds for the exact reasons you stated, however I am having a horrible experience especially with starting my fall brassicas. I’ve started seeds at least 3 times this fall. They all seem to sprout just fine, but before the true leaves appear the seedlings die. Here are some of things I’ve done- adjust the light real close and away from the seedlings, lights on 14-16 hrs, kept them moist; let the top of the seed starting mix dry out. No heat; Sterilize the potting mix; had a fan blowing. Each and every time the same result. They spout and a week or so later the leaves seem to bleach out then they slowly die. I am using 3 Barinna pinkish grow lights per shelf. What am I doing wrong? This is really frustrating. Thank you.
I'm tempted to get the 10000s to see if I can grow microdwarf tomatoes & peppers to maturity using just them indoors over the winter. On your recommendation from a video you did years ago, I bought the 5000k lamps for under $20, & I successfully grow not only seedlings well under those, but also leafy greens (lettuce/swiss chard/bok choy/spinach) to full maturity. I can't believe our 2024 season is almost over already, but the colorful leaves already turning here in Ann Arbor Michigan is convincing me Autumn is here.
Every year, for about three years, I have started seeds indoors using shop lights as my grow lights. Last year, I bought a new unit so that we could start even more. I have not found shop lights with four lights or the same kelvin/lumen ratings as the two bulb units that I have or the one that you showed in your video.
I agree all these expensive lights. I have been running this for years! I give away a few hundred plants each season to friends and family. All that is needed is a inexpensive timer. Nice video!
I got a hyper tough and ordered the 1020 tray 6 cell inserts.I will get 2 more light so i can have a 3tierd grow area.Figure I'll use some toggles to raise and lower the lites.
