    I learned the boiling water trick a couple of years ago while watching your videos. This year I got lazy and didn't do it ... and had a fungus gnat infestation while my partner and I were working from home because of the pandemic (bad timing!) Lesson learned the hard way, but thanks to your videos I immediately realized what I'd done wrong, and won't make that mistake a 2nd time.

    You are my authority on anything gardening! For the past 6 months I’ve been obsessively watching ALL your videos because this year I’m starting my garden from seed rather from transplants I would normally buy from Home Depot. I loved choosing from among the varieties of veggies, herbs and flowers that I can grow from seed. Cinnamon basil? Orange thyme? Purple tomatoes? Who knew? I certainly didn’t. Most of this was new to me: seed starting, using grow lights, bottom watering, hardening off, etc. I love that you unapologetically use synthetic fertilizers. I love fish emulsion but not in my house. I am mostly organic but I find that synthetic fertilizers are more practical at the seedling stage. I’m sure you get crap about it but we use what works for us. Thank you for helping newbies like myself have gardening success. ❤

    Seed starting for the very first time this year. I'm currently using a 50 watt "plant light bulb" that I believe is radiating blue light and is sitting 3 in. above my seedlings (tomatoes/peppers). I'm one week in and my tomato seedlings are roughly one inch and my peppers are just sprouting. Thank you for all of your videos they've been so helpful in my growing journey!

I also use my left over dried out green tea, it is the perfect amount of nitrogen for the seed once is starts....

      I don't but I agree. Plants using local soil if the soil is good as it best mimics the local natural conditions. So, I feel what your thrown down here. 👍
      A lot of info here but when he said lumens I had to pause. As plants don't use it for photosynthesis for them it isn't measured like that. But, he was on point about the spectrum that indoor growers are looking for. I would also create a gentle breeze from a fan. Not only will it help strengthen your babies but will also eliminate most mold concerns. And it helps keep the flying critters out of your soil. Mold is bad but your right that there should be a balance of good and bad. Which is also a reason why some add sugars to their watering. It feeds the good bacteria that's present and n turn protect your girls through the soil. Their waste will feed your ladies as well. Not sure how many use a living soil or super soil for their a mediums?

      Shane from Migro explains light and what your looking for for medicinal plants. Lighting has come along way since the blurple lights. Which can still hit a good par with a good efficiency. But, some LEDs can be used to go from seed to harvest.
      Again hit Migro for more info about light. Shane better explained how is works better than I ever could..

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  4 года назад +1

      PAR is more important full indoor growing. When just selecting lights for seed starting/transplants, Lumens and Kelvin are good guidelines. 500 lumens vs 5000 lumens matters. For more elaborate indoor growing like flowering, budding and fruiting... other values are important. 8-10 weeks of growth and out the door.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  4 года назад +1

      If that works great. Zones are different. I would have an insect fest. For just seed starts... sterile mix. Grow them 8-10 weeks or so and get them outside into soil full of life.

      @@MyFirstVegetableGarden I can see your seedling point for sure. But, again that measurement is for humans and plays little part of the plants development as far as I been taught. And I only mentioned it because yellow is not so useful for plants even in a full spectrum setup. That's why I mentioned par as it is the measurement for what plants need at any stage of its life. And that starting seeds indoors I still would go by ppf instead, but that's just me. But, I can see what your saying there and can agree with you. To be more accurate on my part I suppose the best unit to measure would be using the ypf scale for anything indoors, really.

    This is very interesting I usually just put the seeds in the ground outside where I want then and they magically grow. No grow lights, no trays no hassle. I usually have a great grow season. Maybe because I live in California? At the end of my grow season I don’t till I cover the old plants with cardboard lay mulch over them and then replant in the spring. Most years my tomatoes self propagate by leaving a few tomatoes on the plants. This gardening thing seems more complicated than it really is. I focus on my soil and nature takes care of the rest. And I never use any type of store bought fertilizers my worms take care of that. It’s all about the soil!

I used seed starting mix (didn’t boil) and also mixed in a little worm castings as it was all I had on hand and thought (wrongfully) that it could benefit from it. The big guys are so big it appears they are overshadowing the much slower growing Basil, Thyme etc. Should I pull the little guys and give them their own lamp? I have an extra one. When to start fertilizing plants: how old is mature enough?
    How to tell if they're getting too much/little light. No doubt, different for different plants. I suspect I've used too much on nasturtium seedlings. They've up to 4-7 leaves now, and seem a bit pale. Using LED grow lights, 3000K (I had not seen your info first), and the seed package doesn't tell me this. There must be a way to look at them and decide.
    Thanks again!

      Hi, I know it's a 2 years late comment but hopefully this can help someone else.
      I think it depends on the type of seeds. In general, as far as I know, seeds just need water to activate the germination process that triggers specific enzymes.
      I successfully germinated (first root and leaves appeared) 88 basil seeds in a transparent food container using kitchen paper and some water (I sprayed 4 times the kitchen paper), in just 4 days, 26C temperature, and very high humidity inside the plastic container. Sometimes the container has been opened to introduce back oxygen and avoid formation of mold.
      The lighting in my kitchen was always indirect.
      After the first root is emerging, I suggest suppling light as Gary suggested as the seeds will produce the first leaves and orient them towards the light.
      You can do that even before showing the first roots, but it's not really needed for most of the seeds.
      This applies when growing directly in trays or pots.
      The key factors for seeds are temperature, humidity and an almost sterile environment from what I've been reading.
      Hope it helps!
      Note: I'm an amateur mediterranean herbs grower, I started literally 1 month ago 🙂

      I never cover them. I found it breeds more mold and fungus cause of the humidity.

    Are you starting any seeds on a heating mat? If so how do you water them?

      Always water when top of mix fully lightens as it signal to water.

    What do I do if my light gets really hot? I can't put it too close or else they wilt.

    The distance of the light above the seedlings depends on the light. Don’t put a quality LED grow light 2” from your seedlings or you’ll burn them very quickly. More like 2’ depending on the intensity of the light source.

    Hey Gary,
    So I have some LED lights that are 5000 Kelvin and 18000 Lumens. For pepper plants with 3-5 sets of true leaves, how long would you leave those lights on and how far above the plants? I've been leaving them on for 16 hours a day, about 2 inches above the tallest plant. I'm having an issue with purple stems and full black leaves. I cant tell if its a light issue, or if i'm watering too much...
    Thanks for making all these helpful videos.
    -Chase

      Wow. So 18k is out of my league. Leaves and stems can be purple but raise the lights now to 12 inches. And watch them.

      Hey, just following up... so the plants don’t seem phased by me moving the lights up. I’ll probably leave them raised.
      I think I identified the overall issue with this years seedlings. Last year I used a miracle grow water soluble fertilizer and had amazing results. This year I tried using a Jobe’s organics water soluble product and I think that’s the issue. Just a nutrition deficiency. I decided to feed the plants with the miracle grow and they are responding well. I’m sure they will be fine once I move the plants outdoors in a few weeks!

    Gary, once the seed sprouts in the dirt, how often should it be watered?

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  3 года назад

      Well... that varies. You want the top of the starting mix to dry and lighten. When that happens its about watering time. But it varies based on many factors.

    I kept hearing that letting seeds dry out would cause them to die, so I kept my seeds soaked with a humidity tray... You can imagine how that went. Lol.

    Hey Gary...I have two flats of tomatoes and pepper plants that I've started from seeds and they have now all sprouted and growing. However I have some mold growing on the top of the soil. I have them under grow lights. How can I get rid of this mold? Thanks for all the great videos.

      Rob Vail back off on watering and spray neem oil very lightly near base and on leaves for good measure (without splashing or getting your counter wet)

      If its green its algae. As mentioned let the tops of the soil dry but 20 minutes in the sun a day is the best cure.

      It works. I am doing that now in clear tubs. Allows me to do warm weather crops that way. Out in the day. In at night. Cold weather crops can typically stay out.
