    I give Mattel kudos for attempting to complete with MGA’s OMG line, but I have to be honest MGA’s completely killing the play-line’s game .. Mattel’s Extra’s are nice, but I feel they made mistake not using MTM bodies. The bodies they used are no more than the older articulated Fashionistas,, very light-weight , easy to break by children .. The clothing’s nice, better than the current stiff body Fashionista outfits. I get the pets “children like them, most adults myself included DON’T“.....They tried it, hopefully they listen to the adult fan’s feedback just a little , and create a play line adult’s will like as well...Lastly
    In my opinion $19.99 would’ve been a better price point .

    • @ToyChat
      @ToyChat  3 года назад +15

      MGA is definitely thriving right now! Totally agree, Made to Move bodies would've taken these to the next level of a truly 'deluxe' Mattel offering. I also agree $19.99 would've been a more serviceable price point for these, even if it meant they'd have to cut some of the plastic accessories or even the pets. Let's see if there's more to come! -Max

    I appreciate your balanced review of these! It sounds like Sang wasn’t a fan though LOL. I see all your points. I’ve lost some (but not all) faith in Babs since her heyday. With the loss of Silkstone, I have to wonder what they’ll be offering longtime older collectors. This Extra series is cute and fun but I have yet to see them in person myself. At least they’re taking chances - I’d love to see an all new series competing with LOLs. Hopefully Mattel still has some fight left in them. Thanks boys!

  • @Drewski217
    @Drewski217 3 года назад +37

    I'm reminded a LOT of the conversation I had with Max about Barbie not getting to have growing pains and I think this line is a perfect example of that. Comparing them to RH is unfair IMO because by that token even OMG isn't as good of a deal as RH since they usually are the same price but with one outfit and that becomes a split on if you'd rather have more 'things' like shoe & hat boxes or more clothes. I do think that the use of 'extra' is a little iffy tho and given Mattel's prior toy battles with other lines (but MGAE in modern times especially) that it's fair to look at these comparisons skeptically.
    I do think Max hit the nail on the head re: the audience as well - Adult Collectors, I feel, need to check themselves more with things like this. Most playline toys ARE for kids and there's certainly a market for a sweeter/more innocent spin on OMG. Now does that make these more childish? Sure it does but maybe that's the whole point in the first place.
    On their own, I think if you take away 1 & 2's clothing and/or fabric choices that the other 3 mostly stand on their own as more original seeming. (#1 should've gone for more of a flaired track suit pant instead maybe?) The pet pig is a bit egregious but I appreciate that the pig's wings become a hair accessory and wish this crossover compatibility carried over to *all* the pet accessories with their owners in some way.
    In any case, I think Barbie could do good to look through their own classic lines and evoke colors or silhouettes from hit dolls in a contemporary way (if you squint #3 could almost be a Jewel Girl homage) but this first step is a good way for them to figure out what this line needs to be and I hope they can really further branch in their own direction for a second wave.

    • @ToyChat
      @ToyChat  3 года назад +5

      Y'know, I'd love to have a deeper conversation with someone in the industry and dive deeper into what the situation is on true manufacturer cost of accessories vs fashion pieces vs articulation, whatever licensing rights are involved and so on, and then we can REALLY get into the meat and potatoes of this debate lol! Nowadays most OMGs are actually *more* expensive than RH, though technically speaking they tend to come with even more now that the newer lines have all sorts of packaging gimmicks or come paired with the usual LOL lil sisters & all that. But like I mentioned in the video, I get such a strong feeling that manufacturers / companies and customers are just not on the same page because perceived value does not seem to connect properly with all parties involved. I think Mattel should all but outright survey their top buyers and ask outright, what exactly is it you *value* in your doll purchases, ergo are willing to pay more for, and from there maybe they can get some breathing room to expand prices where they need to, and consumers will stop complaining about it because it'll go to specifics they want! Lol. But I'm sure it's all not quite that simple either.
      And yes, even myself as an adult collector, have to sometimes readjust what I'm expecting from any given toy keeping in mind that in basically all playline cases...I am not the target market lol. I'm sure kids getting into these will love the pet figures and parents will appreciate the fact that the earrings can't fall out. But it's also just odd cuz other playline Mattel dolls do/did have fully removable earrings so...? Idk lol.
      I had not considered the wings function as a hair accessory! That sounds cute & I'll have to try it haha. I am very curious if Barbie Extra will get a wave 2. It seems like they're doing very well comparatively speaking, these dolls are selling out everywhere online and in stores from what I've been seeing. So hopefully that signals greater investment in making it work, hopefully evolving in the right ways next time around. We'll see! -Max

    Honestly I might consider getting these if they go on sale. But for now I'd rather spend the money on rainbow high. Also the only "extra" thing here are the pets, which we can totally do without since they do not seem cohesive with the doll.

    If I was a kid .....would I want a Barbie extra doll with no other outfits or fashion accessories to play with or a Barbie playset that is the same price. Just google it...the Barbie Cake Bakery Playset is 24.99..the Barbie spa set is 16.99...the Barbie supermarket is freaking 19.00 bucks right now! If I was a parent I would buy the toy that was going to give me more bang for my buck. Buying the Barbie extra with no extra isn't the toy to fulfill this need for the parent who wants more bang and the child who wants more play. Now, if I was just dead set on giving my child a fashion doll ....again why would I go with barbie extra when there are other doll lines that give more fashion to play with at a similar price point? The only thing Extra about these Barbies are the extra dollars being spent on a pet accessory and no pig is worth that much extra.

      We may eventually have a full discussion video on doll pricing, it's a hot topic and one everyone seems to have varying opinions on! I just don't get why everyone is so obsessed with the MTM bodies... tbh before they were created we were all pretty satisfied with the "normal" articulation, same as Monster High, OMG (arms) and Barbie Fashionistas. I think this articulation is good enough, and also prettier.

    • @ToyChat
      @ToyChat  3 года назад +4

      I think MTM set the standard from a *Barbie* perspective just because they're so incredibly posable, but you're right the MH/EAH articulation was probably more aesthetically pleasing at the joints. But given everything about this collection seems to be aiming for more luxe playline standards, maximum Barbie posability would've been cool - but I totally see your point of view. Thanks for watching! -Max

    I am just getting back into collecting after 20 years (so I am "mature"). For me, it has always been Barbie's face and hair first, then the fashion. The pixelation of some dolls is very disappointing/frustrating, but I love #5s hair and overall face, and the pixellation doesn't seem too bad. In Canada, these are $40 at Walmart, which isn't cheap, so I don't know if I'll get one unless there is a sale. I certainly wouldn't pay secondary market prices for any of these dolls. As an adult, I would prefer a better quality doll and clothing than a pet, although at least the pets aren't totally junky.

    • @ToyChat
      @ToyChat  3 года назад +2

      So true! You can always fix/change the outfits, but the face...that's more complicated. Honestly, I don't personally consider any of these dolls to have problematic levels of pixelation aside from (pretty noticeably, unfortunately) #3. Ah, I mentioned this in another comment but I feel bad for international folks who have to pay even higher prices for some of these dolls. I hope you can get them on sale soon! And yes, the pets may not feel as value-heavy as additional fashions or other things, but they are very cute and seem mostly designed with love! -Max

    Ha!! Nice review!! I agree with Sang.. BMR1959 looks more cohesive than Barbie extra, but I have to say, after watching this is, that i can see a potential in this line.. they have very good pieces, and the styling is kinda cool.. just the final details and lack of painting on the plastic pieces are what make them looks unresolved. Love the coats and jackets, the variety on hair styles, colors and textures.. and skintones. And I am amazed that the pixelated eyes only looks bad on the blond one.. I guessed all of them looked as bad as that one.. but they look good on video. I do agree that the pet doesn't have any value to the line.. Have to say that I probably will buy 2 of them just because of the faux fur coats when they'll go on sale.. hahahhaa

      Thanks as always for watching buddy! Despite the issues and controversy, it's definitely true there are some fun pieces and concepts there! My suspicion is #3 remained pixelated because she's basically a recreation of existing Fashionistas, a sculpt we've seen several times before. So I think because of that, she ended up with the same blurry face treatment. The faux fur coats are a defining feature for sure, both #1 and #3's coats are so fun!! I'm sure they'll go on sale sooner or later, most Barbies do lol. -Max

    I only collect Barbie and Integrity Toys dolls, so I’m not aware of how these really compare to other manufacturers. As far as Barbie play line Mattel has never done better than the Generation Girl line. Named dolls with extra clothing pieces, accessories that reflect the personality of the character, different body types, added articulation, new face sculpts...the line really had it all! Imagine Barbie 1959 diversity plus extra clothes, named dolls and play accessories!

    glad mattel is trying to compete with the more modern play lines (finally) but i’m not yet convinced. as others have said, the styling of these dolls look more like the goal was to be over the top rather than to give a sense of personality and individual fashion like the OMGs do. would much prefer more clothing pieces over a plastic pet that seemingly has little to do with the actual theme. RH is the better choice at that price point but if i find the extras on sale ill definitely pick up dolls 2 and 5. overall it’s a good starting place and id love to see a series 2 if they listen to feedback.

    I think these dolls are cute. Although 95%of my collection are Integrity dolls. Like most collectors my age I started out collecting Barbie. I appreciate that Mattel still make affordable cute dolls for collectors to enjoy.

    I love these dolls an I let them in the box. Their outfits are the best since a long time. The blonde is the first Millie that I like. I have over 700 dolls and I collect since over 30 years. The EXTRAs look like a modern version of the 80 Benettons. The best outfits in the last years had the Barbie Fashionistas Deluxe and the Life In The Dreamhouse dolls. I talk about playline.

    This drama seems silly to me. Is Mattel trying to directly compete with the wildly popular OMG dolls? Yes! That’s how business works. I don’t understand why that would be a shock to anyone. I would understand if it was a copycat of a high-concept toy line like “fashionable children of famous monsters” or if they had directly emulated LOL’s facial styling. Or, say, if they had started naming the characters things like “Pastelicious.” The concept here is just… loud, colorful fashion. You can’t really copyright that; it’s too broad. I personally slightly prefer the OMG dolls because I like big heads and the fashions are more thematically cohesive. I just think it’s silly to make a big deal of Mattel waking up to the fact that LOL is popular and trying to compete with their own loud and colorful line. To my eye, the difference in proportions, theming, and age appeal are all still distinctly “Barbie” here.

    I love the barbie extras line-up the pets are cute but it needs to go to producing secondary outfits and combs for the different hair textures.I can't wait to get them, Mattle could have used different body types.It is a cute line.MGA missed the mark on diversity entirely.

    Basically, who wore it better. I got #3 because I loved the hair, but MGA is wore it better. MY opinions are my own. They come with higher quality clothing, hair, packaging, and everything. Barbie needs to bring hollywood fashion or elegant dresses again, and stop their cheap production

  • @ErichBen1
    @ErichBen1 3 года назад

    It is not the first time that Barbie copies the concept from rival brands to be on trend, I am not into LOL and Rainbow high but I see a HUGE difference on quality and design between barbie and MGA dolls, I really hope MGA will develope a fashion doll with more humanizated features to compete with barbie. other brands like integrity have done that with collector dolls, so why not trying to do the same with playline and MGA is the most competitive to do it.

    • @ToyChat
      @ToyChat  3 года назад

      Honestly if we're being real they both have their strong suits! It definitely wouldn't be fair to say that only one of them 'isn't good' or repeatedly 'copies.' When Mattel does articulation right (EAH, MH, MTM Barbie), I think they actually set the standard in that category and outdo most MGA releases. But there's no denying MGA is really on top of quality and stylishness when it comes to fashions. The clothes (on LOL OMG, RH) are just so beautiful and trendy. I see where you're coming from with the more natural proportions on Mattel and how some folks may prefer that. MGA leans towards heavier stylization in face and body sculpts, which I think can be more fun and artsy, but it won't appeal as much to folks wanting realism in their dolls. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    Didn't Barbie copy Jem dolls in the 80s but rushed the Rockers out to stores first, and they copied Bratz with My Scene? And so it continues. I wish they would bring back Barbie Style like the ones that came out right after the Life in the Dreamhouse dolls, because they were equally posable plus had chest articulation, layered fashions, no pets, and less gaudy. Extra catches my attention, I might get number 5, but I don't love any of them.

      Lol dolly drama / mimicking has existed for decades, across many different companies for sure! Life in the Dreamhouse is an era I'm sad I missed haha those dolls looked so playful and colorful in all the right ways. And yes, so articulated! If you're gonna only choose one from Barbie Extra, #5 is an excellent choice! -Max

    Everyone’s comparing mga to Barbie and I think for Barbie to compte they need to hone in one the one thing they have mga does not
    KEN!
    If they put more effort into Ken and making him high quality (like with long haired Ken or otherwise,) they might get people looking there way because mga has 2 boy dolls period so far
    Rainbow highs river
    And omg punk rocker boy
    I think if Mattel tried harder to make more Ken dolls of higher quality and succeeded like they did with long haired Ken or bmr man bun Ken people might look there way again because at least the doll world is in need of more boy dolls and kens already an established boy doll.
    I mean they do a lot with Ken already but it’s all Franky crap beside the two previously mentioned kens but with Barbie at least they try to make her higher quality in some releases they should do that more with Ken and if they expriment with boy dolls then we’d have more diversity of gender on the doll lines and dolls wouldn’t feel like “bc girls play with them they all gotta be girls.” And such.
    Like imagine a high quality signature Ken doll in the same fashion of the collector Barbie dolls but Ken
    I think it would blow up because Ken has literally never gotten that.
    Just a thought.

    I used to be such a big Barbie fan but it's sad to see how far down they've gone. It literally looks like they just copied MGA but unfortunately used a lot cheaper materials. if they would actually listen to their fans more and use good quality materials then their sales would go up. I don't know who's over the company but they must not be too smart.

    I totally agree with all your final comments. I bought one of these because for the first time in ages Barbie had some fashion that I thought looked interesting, but I was really underwhelmed by the value. I think the pets are useless and would've much preferred a second outfit. I do love the outfit the doll came with, but I wish there was more paint/detail put into the accessories, particularly the necklace and shoes. I definitely think it is behind the other dolls out there, like you said especially in comparison to what Rainbow High offers at a similar price point, but is a step in the right direction for Barbie. I was also disappointed in the doll's weirdly tiny feet that haven't changed after all these years 😂 Thanks for the detailed review of all the dolls! I like the one I bought but I think she may be the only one for now. (I got number 1 because I absolutely love her coat and hair).

    I love you guys but always disagree lol. I love the extra dolls hopefully soon all barbies will be mtm . To me lol are weird also cheap, the big head looks like it was smooched flat . RH again with too big for the body head but at least there is some articulation and the faces are pretty the market is flooded with them though instead of fashion packs its new dolls every month love their closet bought for barbie. The new Ella doll is horrible. 99% of IT dolls are over-priced and I'm sorry to say ugly some of the clothing and accessories are beautiful but so delicate they fall apart in your hands also their hair is overloaded with product that you can't do nothing about because they are not fully rooted and for the price that's ridiculous. Now Poppy Parker and the Monarch guys are the ones that could compete with Barbie and Ken she is beautiful . If she was available Barbie would finally have some competition. Mitzi is very pretty but to tall and those hands are bad . Sorry collectors I know these are very unpopular options here on RUclips.

    I thought #2 was a weird body choice. It's sporting Japanese fashion on a CURVY doll. I purposely don't buy curvy because the clothes don't swap with normal Barbie. And if they were going for Japanese look they missed the mark. Colors are appealing, that top is hideous. #4 her sparse hair and curvy... No.
