Gentlemen! You did this iconic sandwich justice! Thank you so much for not over-browning the meat and also not adding coca cola or any other such that so many crazy people swear by. And yes, fresh diced onion is perfectly acceptable in addition to mustard and pickle. Next time, add a tsp of vinegar, and very importantly, wrap the sandwich in wax paper before serving. It makes a huge difference. Very nice! Iowa heritage here, been eating these since the late 60's.

Agree totally. I never figured out why the cook would prepare the sandwiches and wrap them in the paper and line them up for a few minutes before serving. Later I figured that’s how the bun gets steamed and so soft.

@@michaeldegroff1002 I use cider vinegar. Also a teaspoon of soy sauce with the beef broth and worcestershire.

I steam my meat use salt pepper and a bit of chicken bouillon and and a touch of flour. Don’t know why the bouillon and flour but that’s what I was told by several people. I put onion flakes in the meat but use Raw onions on top mustard and pickle but NO CHEESE.

Nice one guys, I love learning new things! I have never really heard of the Maid Rite. Your video is definitely inspiring, and this is a must try. We have made loose meat sandwiches before, but never steamed the meat with broth. Where I remember loose meat sandwiches is from the show "Rosanne" growing up. I always thought it sounded interesting, but we always just made Sloppy Joes instead. I really enjoy cooking and food in general, but when it has a story behind it, it's even better. Griddle On!

I grew up eating something very similar at a small diner in Minnesota called “The Bungalow”. They were just called burgers there. They had round bar stools at the counter and a few booths. The counter surrounded the cook station. There was a big pit that the beef was steamed in. This was all they served other then homemade cookies and bars. You could order the regular burger or burger with onions. They were small chopped onions raw added to the steamed beef, mustard and pickles. There was no ketchup even available. They were delicious!

I lived in Iowa for a number of years and these simple sandwiches are a staple for families there. My only critiques, if I may, would be 1) mix some mustard into the ground beeef instead of adding it to the bun - it will flavor the beef and not the AWESOME Martin's roll, which is the goal and 2) MINCE your onions much finer. This way the onions will be incorporated better into the ground beef mixture. The larger chopped/diced onions can overpower some bites of the sammich instead of flavoring it like the minced onions will. 3) IF you must put pickles on (which is a sin to many Iowans) put those on top of the meat mixture. 4) IF you are gonna use cheese (again, a sin to many Iowans), use white american or provolone under the beef mixture. 'Nuff said by me on this.
Y'all do great work and are a blast to watch... Thanks for making so many vids with many varied recipes!

There w a s a little "Mom and Pop" place just south of town on Rt. 9 thatade and sold what was called a "Michigan Hotdog". VERY GOOD STUFF.
Basically a Hotdog with ground beef similar to this loaded on it. Try it, Loose meat filling on a hotdog. Use a Hoagie Roll so you can gey b a good hold on it.

We always made this with chicken broth, but I don't think it matters much, as long as you get the meatjuice and salt.

I'd think that an extra binder (like cheese) would be great from having to juggle food falling apart from each bite of the sandwich.
Even a loose meat saucedsloppy joe benefits from the cheese-glue to give extra flavor and integrity for it to not end up in your lap.
