- Official Reggae Sound Clash: Jah Shaka vs Saxon Studio Leeds 1986
Jah Shaka started out on the Freddie Cloudburst Sound System as an operator, before setting up his own sound system.By the late 1970s Shaka's system had rapidly gained a large and loyal following due to the combination of spiritual content, high energy rhythms, massive sonority, and his dynamic personal style. That following notably included many of the pioneers of post-punk such as Public Image Ltd and The Slits.
In 1980 Shaka played himself in the film Babylon (directed by Franco Rosso, although he directed the scene he appeared in, operating his Sound System in a soundclash at the climax of the story.
Shaka stayed true to his spiritual and distinct musical style during the 1980s when many other Sound Systems had started to follow the Jamaican trend towards playing less orthodox styles tending towards slack dancehall music.
In 1989 Shaka visited Jamaica and worked with many musicians there, including King Tubby.
On 23 September 2000 he suffered numerous injuries during a house fire.
In 2002 Jah Shaka appeared before a large crowd in New York City's Central Park.
Live footage of Shaka is featured in the documentary All Tomorrow's Parties based on the musical festival, which was released in 2009.
The Jah Shaka Sound System continues to appear regularly in London, with occasional tours of the United States, Europe and Japan.
Saxon Studio International is a reggae soundsystems from London, the first UK soundsystem to win an international competition.
Saxon Studio International began operating in Lewisham, South London in 1976.[1]
The sound came to prominence in the early 80s because of the "fast chat" style which was pioneered by its deejay Peter King.[2] Other Saxon MCs included Tippa Irie,[3] Smiley Culture,[4] Asher Senator,[5] Papa Levi,[6] Daddy Colonel, Daddy Rusty and Daddy Sandy, each of whom developed this style and went on to release records, some (such as Smiley and Tippa) achieving Top 40 hits in the UK national chart.

Experience an unforgettable night with Saxon MCs, Papa Levi, Daddy Colonel, and
Banton Irie. Enjoy a fantastic dance and top-notch entertainment from both sounds.
I wouldn't look at this dance as a clash simply because CEO Dennis Rowe of Saxon Studio used to lift boxes for JAH Shaka b4 he and fellow CEO Muscle Head formed Saxon Studio. Therefore Saxon Studio and JAH Shaka are very close and you can still hear the admiration for JAH Shaka in Dennis Rowes' interviews to this day. This seems more like JAH Shaka alongside Saxon Studio where Roots & Dancehall fans get the best of both Vibrations. Great Post Don ! Keep up the Vibes Mi Bredrin ! Salute !
This has to be one of the silliest dances shaka played with. completely differnt level different vibes different genre... D Rowe wasnt thinking in my opinion.
ting a ling the higher spheres are turning on their oval orbits&the maws of dread are open..no problem even if the sound quality is missing if ur occupied doing something else. Though i've listened to enough damaged tape cassettes from the 1980s for it not to matter anymore.Important to preserve this priest's legacy nevertheless. He's more powerful the more local his audience.
Shaka keeping to the roots and culture whilst Saxon deal with their regular slackness. Shaka all the way!
Rare
in Leeds.

depending on how this session was edited, sounds like saxon took the piss with the alternate playing times
