Totally agree. Drawing Sonic characters is more difficult than it looks. Simple characters have less forgiving margin of errors.

Agreed, I Have To Draw Someone's Sonic OC As A Commission And I'm Terrified Since I Usually Draw Humans Or Furries With More Human-Like Anatomy. 😭
It's the opposite for me. I always draw Sonic characters as a kid and because of that, I struggle when it comes to regular human art. (Such as drawing the head or hand too big, drawing the body too short, etc.)
It's the same in reverse

Sonic characters are particularly good at making you think you're bad at drawing. So simple looking yet so many nuances to keep in mind.

You’re a huge inspiration to me. Your first dark souls lp got me so hyped in high school I drew a legally distinct mushroom man climbing over a tree and won a congressional art award for it. You’re definitely my favorite creator on the platform.

Seeing Plague do a short and give advice in the exact same cadence as other shorts artists but with his voice is... different. He didn't make any innuendo or do a sarcasm or scoff a dry critisism even once. I mean, it's still genuinely good advice, no joke! It's just that I feel like I've entered a different dimension where left is right and up is down and time flows inside-out.

Yeah it really do be like that, if so much as one detail is a little bit off it stops looking like a sonic character. But that makes it all the more satisfying when you manage to get it right
This specific anatomy is why just about every 3d printable model of Amy Rose or Rouge always feels off.
My own sonic OCs had a lot of clashing between my own way of drawing and the actual sonic style.
It's very complicated to make them "right" so i just go with what i know and improve in what i need most.

As an artist who is currently drawing Sonic right now, I completely agree that sonic characters are just Beans that fit inside their own heads.

Same exact reason why when 5-6 year old me made a Sonic oc I never drew her (don’t worry, though, I draw her now all the time). Sonic characters are stupid difficult to draw. 💀 But it really is trial and error, and, funny enough, the only characters I’m struggling to draw are Sonic and Shadow, so I guess that’s a plus. 😭 But seriously speaking, I remember looking at my Sonic drawings from even just a few years ago, and if you draw anything even slightly off, the entire thing looks off. At least it’s good style practice!

Freedom Planet 2 does for me as far as anatomy goes since its designs are made by TysonTan. It's always nice to see your version of Sonic characters since the anatomy is somethin' I'd lean closer to in my own art.
I think people see these types of characters and think that they are easy to draw, when in reality all the fundamentals still apply when drawing these sorts of characters

The thing is, I started actively drawing when I was 14. With Sonic characters no less. I had a harder time drawing people and learning real anatomy because I was so versed in Sonic art. I never had such an issue, so this was eye-opening.
I used to draw sonic characters a lot as a young artists. They look so weird without necks 😭😭
I've been lately getting back into ,and I've found my own unique art style that is a tad simpler but also still feels sonic,I guess I just added more floof and different ear style

When i was little and learning how to draw, i drew a lot of sonic characters for whatever reason. I only got responses like "ew, sonic characters" but it helped me practice things like expressions and motion.
It can be hard to draw sonic characters once you get used to the style, i learnt that from experience
When creating my first Sonic oc, I made a discovery when trying to match the SA style.....they don't have necks. I, for the life of me, couldn't get the neck area to look right then I realized that they are all neck-less! so because I didn't know how to fix the problem, I hid the problem by giving my oc a scarf xD

Ive gotten used to drawing more humanoid characters for a long time. And i often found it kinda hilarious how i can draw characters with complicated designs, but characters like sonic or megaman who i deem simplistic, i end up always botching their anatomy.
I always figured sonic would be like drawing a snowman, just goes to show just cause a character looks simple to draw, doesnt mean they are.
This was fantastic. Picked up an art tablet last weekend and have been doodling little things, your words of pushing on through failure are the hardest part for me. I am my own biggest critic lol
What do you think of the archie sonic design where multiple had different design and still look like sonic characters example lupe wolf.
It honestly depends on who was doing the line work. Sometimes they would look very off or weirdly shaped.
