Hope you've all enjoyed the series! The car is now available for bids on eBay: bit.ly/is200auction As many of you have noticed, you have to be pre-approved before you're allowed to bid. This is a precaution we have to take to make sure that no one is scamming the charity. We are going through the process of pre-approving bidders now - thanks for your patience guys, and good luck to all bidders!
Bratsoni I have had it a couple years now. Last week I put 18s on it and decent rubber. Longest I've owned a car so if you make an offer I may sell. Happy to email you details and pictures.
***** Just see the CGP Grey Channel, he does a video every few months and his videos get tons of views very fast when compared to other channels his size. Less videos=>higher value in the viewers' mind=>more excitement about a new episode=>more views At the same time Less videos=>less stuff to watch=>more time to watch the same number of videos=>more views from people who don't have enough time
I really like where this is headed! It's nice, simple, and somewhat scientific! Plus you don't make terribly long boring videos we have to sit through to get to the good part.
Looking good. I'm tired watching new car reviews, and I love to see this type of videos. Watching a old good car turning in to a track machine is so much joyful.
I agree that light wheels and semi-slicks help, but one thing: old tyres in this test were for winter season. It increased the difference in lap time in compare to even regular summer tyres :)
Very much glossed over the fact the original tyres were winter tyres! Surprising that going from worn winter tyres to lightweight rims and semi slick tyres makes so little difference, lap time wise.
hmm maybe we should write to the BBC.......I think Alex reminds me of a younger Jeremy Clarkson not in looks....but in humor and presenting skill....unlike the current trio its to scripted....I love Mr LeBlanc but you can tell he ain't a natural presenter especially when they have a guest on.
Remember you should do an alignmet for the new wheel set, and also very important thing- new tires need some time to fit for the alignment and to get rid of some grease on them ;)
I wonder if new engine oil 0w40 for example, new gearbox and differencial oil will bring some improvement. Maybe some friction reducing additives for engine like the liquy Molly ceratec and for gearbox and differencial liquy molly gear protect.... Also maybe a fuel additive to clean the fuel system... Also better fuel 100 octane? All that together maybe half a second?
The only reason to use higher octane is because your engine has higher compression ratios requiring higher octane to reduce detonation. If you use higher octane in a vehicle that doesnt require all you accomplish is to drain your bank account, and ruining your cat converter.
Okay then maybe the other stuff would do some improvment... Definitely interested if that combination works because i will do the same treatment to my car that is also extending the longevity of the gearbox and differencial
alex could you do a video with light alloys vs the heaviest steel wheels you could find. with same tires on them. i am curious how much difference lightened wheels make.
Alex Kersten i believe he meant that your total laps (experience) with the IS keeps improving the more you drive it... either that or the gearbox is knackered? But yeah, the 86 would improve a second or two with non-prius rubber as well, guaranteed. That being said... its a no brainer that for 9 double O this value is unbeatable.
but the whole point is to see if you could tune an IS200 to match a stock GT 86. (read: to see if a budget track car could keep up with an expensive sportscar) Of course the GT 86 has more potential...
Alex Kersten Dorry dude but you're way too inconsistent of a driver for this series to be meaningful in any way. The track bring so tight and technical doesn't help either.
Hi Alex, I know this is 7 years old, but if you don't know - lowering your car messes up the roll centre (lowers it), inducing more roll due to the greater moment between centre of gravity and roll centre, this means you get less grip (non linear function of additional load on then tyre and grip) , so you lose a lot of the benefit from the better tyres.
Miguel Ribeiro no, wheel size is irrelevant, it's tyre rolling diameter that matters and they have fitted tyres with a bigger sidewall to bring it back to about the same size.
Indeed. But I suspect they filmed this episode at the same time as the first one so would have needed a 2nd set of wheels rather than reusing the stock wheels, plus they need to please the sponsor by being seen to buy parts like wheels and exhausts even though they won't add much 'speed' to the project.
They were such good cars, my mother in law had one when they were still fairly new - used to take any excuse to drive it. Sadly she sold it to my sister in law, who has totally trashed it since - she still has it, and it's still running reliably despite a complete lack of any servicing. It looks a lot like this one, with loads of dents and rust and flaking paint.
Honestly was expecting Alex to use better tyres than those cheap shit nankangs. Obviously new tyres no matter what brand will have better grip than the tattered old ones, but they would've been better off keeping the existing wheels and spending more for some Bridgestone, Pirelli or Continental rubber.
So going from winter tyres to summer tyres made it quicker on dry warm Tarmac, who would have guessed (there was a big clue in how the tyres looked and the 'Alp' in the name by the way).
The reduced diameter and lower profile of the tires and wheels means for every single rotation of the drive shafts you move a slightly shorter distance than you would have with similar sized tyres.
I too have a Lexus is200 which is a great car in its own right. The reason why it's not liked by boy racers is that it is set up to cruise and you have to step on it to get it to hustle. Totally loving your evolution from road to track car Alex Fuckin awesome show thanks !!
Great work! I love the detailed comparison. I think I would have overhauled the brakes and done a race alignment before worrying about the suspension, but I can't complain. For the general public, DO NOT test the performance of brand new tires before breaking them in! I almost slid off the road on the first turn once. Found out new tires still have lube on them, that prevents the tire from sticking to the mold when they're manufactured.
Hope you've all enjoyed the series! The car is now available for bids on eBay: bit.ly/is200auction

Car Throttle great! Savage move!
Following this with great interest. I too have an is200 sport which I also paid £900 for!
Adrian Miles does it have a stripped interior?
No, heated leather is staying right where it is :-)
Adrian Miles well i can't find one for less than 3.5k ffs
Bratsoni I have had it a couple years now. Last week I put 18s on it and decent rubber. Longest I've owned a car so if you make an offer I may sell. Happy to email you details and pictures.
buy it off u for £150
Make sure to add red stripes/brake callipers, they add at least 150 HP EACH
TheMysteriousBagel that's a misconception it's literally only 50hp per corner
TheMysteriousBagel also don't forget to place some nice "GT stripes" each adds 20hp
TheMysteriousBagel added 25 each on mine!
don't forget muffler bearings
*NEON* muffler bearings, thank you
Weight reduction has to happen.
You'll LOVE episode 3!
At least 3 episodes confirmed?! Ooooh, boy! :D
the next episode theres already 2 out-_-
LowFD3S where can i find the next episodes ?
Pascal Bartoldus it's not out yet
i just wish this series moved quicker
Thomas Mancuso same
but then how would they make $$$$
ᅚ They would get less views per video
It doesn't have to be like a episode a day, just not so spaced out
***** Just see the CGP Grey Channel, he does a video every few months and his videos get tons of views very fast when compared to other channels his size.

NFSMW 2005 memories 😍
Oneofmany FR fam
Oneofmany Didn't nfsmw have the is300?
nah the is200
Oneofmany Underground 2 memories for me.
Alex is becoming Blacklist no. 14
I really like where this is headed! It's nice, simple, and somewhat scientific! Plus you don't make terribly long boring videos we have to sit through to get to the good part.
Apparently new wheels and tires screw with second gear.
(--___--)
Or just bad driving ;)
Alex Kersten lol. Stuff happens.
Come to America. We has the is300 which came with an lsd. And these engines are bullet proof for the the most part.
Alex Kersten HAH xD
Ashish Patel What did you expect from a 2JZ-GE 4 door? The IS300 are the 4 door Supras they are amazing
And I thought the gearbox was great.
The steering wheel is not straight during the straight line.
Chassis geometry will improve overall performance.
Looking good. I'm tired watching new car reviews, and I love to see this type of videos. Watching a old good car turning in to a track machine is so much joyful.
Six cylinder sound track is the best
Wait until you hear it in episode 3!
Alex Kersten MOAR!! AS FAST AS POSSIBRUU!!!!
JoaoPRSousa No V8s are the best
Matt O v10 is the best
JoaoPRSousa OMG, YES!!!!!
You can always rely on car throttle for breaking news. Winter tires aren't good for performance driving.
such a sick series already
I agree that light wheels and semi-slicks help, but one thing: old tyres in this test were for winter season. It increased the difference in lap time in compare to even regular summer tyres :)
Not only entertaining but also inspirational! Now I know what I need to do when I get a car. New wheels and tyres first thing going on!
Car Throttle probably best chanel
lol...."probably"
great video man. can't wait for the next.
Very much glossed over the fact the original tyres were winter tyres! Surprising that going from worn winter tyres to lightweight rims and semi slick tyres makes so little difference, lap time wise.
This series is literally making my life happier.
I wish the episodes came out quicker 😭
Plz
i see you on every initial D video !
I'm a late subsscriber so I get to binge watch every project 😛
I am enjoying this series immensely.
alex I reckon you could make a brilliant future top gear host paired with the right people. always enjoy your vids.
Cheers!
Where do I sign the petition if there is one?
hmm maybe we should write to the BBC.......I think Alex reminds me of a younger Jeremy Clarkson not in looks....but in humor and presenting skill....unlike the current trio its to scripted....I love Mr LeBlanc but you can tell he ain't a natural presenter especially when they have a guest on.
I love this series! Cheap trackbuilds ftw!
Ahhh finally! I was waiting for this! Thank you sir, thank you very much!
Yea, I would miss all those shifts too if the stick were on my left.
favorite series so far !
I wish you guys upload twice a week with that much subscribers
How is the E36? Do you still own it?
Remember you should do an alignmet for the new wheel set, and also very important thing- new tires need some time to fit for the alignment and to get rid of some grease on them ;)
I feel that your twisted seatbelt is triggering my OCD
these is the kind of experiment I came here for! great video!
Can someone tell me what the difference of IS200 and the IS300.
LA of LA main difference is engine size
Is on the engine
JDMSteven whats the engine on the 200 and the 300?
google.com
LA of LA both are i6 but is300 comes with 2jz whereas is200 not but I can't tell you exactly what sits under the hood of is200 sorry :/
*We need more and we need it now*
I wonder if new engine oil 0w40 for example, new gearbox and differencial oil will bring some improvement. Maybe some friction reducing additives for engine like the liquy Molly ceratec and for gearbox and differencial liquy molly gear protect....
Also maybe a fuel additive to clean the fuel system...
Also better fuel 100 octane?
All that together maybe half a second?
Higher octane fuel won't help as I doubt the factory ECU is tuned to make use of it.
Definitely interested if that combination works because i will do the same treatment to my car that is also extending the longevity of the gearbox and differencial
all the thing you said won't chage a thing
but it can't hurt to have some good oil and fluid overall!
cant wait for the new episode !!!!
You should Turbo the Lexus IS200 and test it again.
6:05 I can watch this angle all day
You better change the brakes too!
That's happening
alex could you do a video with light alloys vs the heaviest steel wheels you could find. with same tires on them. i am curious how much difference lightened wheels make.
Remove back seats and passenger spare tire anything that is dead weight and do some maintanence to the engiene and job done
We've done all this and a LOT more for episode 3!
My dad has an is200 sport, I love it
Why don't you weigh the old wheels, and then work out the difference, that might have been interesting.
you improved by the tires getting warmer and warmer, ignoring the miss shifting
just my two cents
Correct me if am wrong but didn't the IS 200 come with a 2jz engine stock?
The Orange Ninja the is200 has the 1g-fe, the is300 has the 2jz
cvan 47 thanks for the clarification.
Good communication :)
whats the difference between those 2?
100
Finally episode 2 is out
This is SOOO much better than Top Gear with Matt LeRetard.
OTT-OTT 1 is it FUCK
Top Gear is still going?
Craylex no it's not
Gabriel Hakes No it is
Anyone who knows anything about cars hates this channel
I am really enjoying this series, please move along at a quicker pace
Why is still the interior in it?
Nikita Alyani next ep
I would like to know laptimes with same tires but light vs heavy wheels!
Not fair. You should take 3 laps with the GT86 and I bet you would improve it's time as well
I did 3 laps (and more) in episode 1. That time was the fastest I could get it
Alex Kersten i believe he meant that your total laps (experience) with the IS keeps improving the more you drive it... either that or the gearbox is knackered? But yeah, the 86 would improve a second or two with non-prius rubber as well, guaranteed. That being said... its a no brainer that for 9 double O this value is unbeatable.
but the whole point is to see if you could tune an IS200 to match a stock GT 86. (read: to see if a budget track car could keep up with an expensive sportscar) Of course the GT 86 has more potential...
Oh, ok then. Wasn't aware.
Alex Kersten Dorry dude but you're way too inconsistent of a driver for this series to be meaningful in any way. The track bring so tight and technical doesn't help either.
Car Throttle>Top Gear
I'm just happy to hear Alexs' voice again. the last dude was a no.
Make the lighter wheels any difference with the same tires? :-)
Sponsored by eBay! O_o
NELKEL JDM VLOGS you should do this challenge mate
I'm considering buying those Nankangs as well at some point. Good to hear some positive stuff!
don't change the topic, where is Phil??
Hi Alex, I know this is 7 years old, but if you don't know - lowering your car messes up the roll centre (lowers it), inducing more roll due to the greater moment between centre of gravity and roll centre, this means you get less grip (non linear function of additional load on then tyre and grip) , so you lose a lot of the benefit from the better tyres.
Waited a long time for this
It would've been 1.5 seconds faster if you didn't have the sweatshirt on the 2nd time.
eBay is live
fit an antilag
gonna need a turbo first
KAL 1 you need turbo first
WiniPlays actually, no, you don't. without a turbo it serves no purpose though, but in vw world there are some who program antilag on non turbo vr6s.
*turbo then antilag
Fuck turbo. Centrifugal supercharger is what this needs 😉
God damn I've been waiting all week for this
Do a weight reduction, that is the best way to shave of a few secs 🙌🏼
+Daniel Veres Wait for the next episode!
lovely series
make it a track car in time to come
Fitting smaller wheels, increases the torque at the wheels, so you've virtually given it a bit more power too.
I was wondering why they downsized. How do smaller wheels affect handling?
Miguel Ribeiro no, wheel size is irrelevant, it's tyre rolling diameter that matters and they have fitted tyres with a bigger sidewall to bring it back to about the same size.
yeah,
Although I don't think the sidewall looks that much different on both tyres. does he say the old size in the video? I didn't pay attention
Wow the part showing him having to steer less on new tyres actually blew me away!
old wheels are better looking though ! shoulda put a good set of tyres on the 17s instead
We are going for speed, not bling-bling.
17" wheels with good tyres would perform better as well !!
Indeed. But I suspect they filmed this episode at the same time as the first one so would have needed a 2nd set of wheels rather than reusing the stock wheels, plus they need to please the sponsor by being seen to buy parts like wheels and exhausts even though they won't add much 'speed' to the project.
H31995 the new wheels are lighter though, and i think they are better looking too but thats just a matter of personal preference
It added almost a second, so what are you talking about?
They were such good cars, my mother in law had one when they were still fairly new - used to take any excuse to drive it. Sadly she sold it to my sister in law, who has totally trashed it since - she still has it, and it's still running reliably despite a complete lack of any servicing. It looks a lot like this one, with loads of dents and rust and flaking paint.
Alteza is for drifting
First gen lexus IS is same as Toyota Alteza
same car. Toyota Altezza = Lexus IS series
actually the toyota is way lighter as it doesnt have as much luxury crap weighing it down.
its only 250lbs lighter
xartpant yamaha beams 3s ftw!
Car Throttle is the new Top Gear
16 inch, really?
JoraForever yep, cheaper tyres, less weight.
Noob. Smaller wheels = less weight = faster. Big wheels are simply retarded, only fools who want shiny bling-bling like them.
JoraForever the only reason you should have larger rims is for larger brakes, otherwise you are hurting performance
Cheaper :P
+Mgo well I mean they're not retarded for luxury cars since they improve ride quality, but for a sports car liek this they are dumb.
Those team dynamics wheels are great super strong and decently light. I've got 5 sets for my car.
Honestly was expecting Alex to use better tyres than those cheap shit nankangs. Obviously new tyres no matter what brand will have better grip than the tattered old ones, but they would've been better off keeping the existing wheels and spending more for some Bridgestone, Pirelli or Continental rubber.
Those are not regular tires, ns2r's will outperform every other 'normal' summer tire
so exited for episode 3 cant wait!!! When does it come out on youtube?
Comes in 2 Wednesdays from now
Thanks for the answer
finally, a project that doesn't kill the car
I'm actually really intrigued by this series even though it's sponsored.
I hope the tire sidewalls on the smaller wheels are larger to keep the same overall size.
You definitely need to swat 3GSE into that IS200. It's gonna be amazing.
So going from winter tyres to summer tyres made it quicker on dry warm Tarmac, who would have guessed (there was a big clue in how the tyres looked and the 'Alp' in the name by the way).
Before some more weight shedding, maybe try finding a shift gate to improve gear change?
finely something watchable
I think the satnav being up helped the most.
The reduced diameter and lower profile of the tires and wheels means for every single rotation of the drive shafts you move a slightly shorter distance than you would have with similar sized tyres.
I hav been waitin for this for sooo long!
pretty good idea for content. really enjoying it.
also looking at that front wheel, hub bearings are in need of replacing if your going for a track build.
The comparison video @ 7:11 is a nice touch.
That's a funky looking wheel lock
One thing I'd recommend is new Anti-Roll Bars. Help keep the car from rolling to far. Help corner flat, and helps it under breaking
love this channel and this series keep it up
Can't wait for the next one, looks like a lot of fun.
Mighty Car Mods reference hell yes
Yes, i waited it for so long!
Can't wait for the next video in this series!
This is fun. Love videos like this.
makes me happy to see other people using the shoe test.
Krisalp HP2's are winter tires. No magic there. Infact, they did quite well compared to sticky summer tires.
i really like the comparison videos, keep on doing that!
I too have a Lexus is200 which is a great car in its own
right. The reason why it's not liked by boy racers is that it
is set up to cruise and you have to step on it to get it to
hustle.
Totally loving your evolution from road to track car Alex
Fuckin awesome show thanks !!
Cheers Evan. Track day with it yesterday (stripped interior, coilovers + exhaust) was insane. Totally transformed the car. And no mis-shifts! :D
Great work! I love the detailed comparison. I think I would have overhauled the brakes and done a race alignment before worrying about the suspension, but I can't complain. For the general public, DO NOT test the performance of brand new tires before breaking them in! I almost slid off the road on the first turn once.
