      Larger brake disk means the pads have more leverage to stop the wheel which means more braking force…

    • @turbo_brian
      @turbo_brian 2 года назад +14

      You can most likely get enough braking torque from the stock caliper to lock up the wheels, aka the maximum braking torque you can use. Even those grippy tires can still be locked up most likely. An aggressive pad compound and a quality rotor is all thats needed. Centric 125 series high carbon rotors and hawk hp + pads would be my recommendation if available.

    • @vr6one
      @vr6one 2 года назад +13

      They can't focus too much on braking. Brakes alone aren't going to solve their 6 second problem and they can easily eat up 3k in a brake setup. The op is right, pads, better rotors and fresh fluid will be enough for a single lap. This is a sprint not a Marathon

    • @howarddavies136

But I think the definition of open wheel car is up to subject, as some people argue it should be single seater, or on the contrary some argue a KTM X-Bow is open wheel while it's still contained in the body.
      And Pog Tuber, the whole point of my com was to get wider rims and wider tyres, and yes I expect it'd have made a lot of difference especially when they're happy with 3s gain with these thin wheels

      Aafaik the extra width is to spread the force+heat over more area, allowing the tyres to survive (a bit longer) the abuse of a powerful engine and hard braking. In a single lap a wider wheel might well suffer from being too hard to keep at ideal temps.

Maybe putting a nitrus system on there for more power and suspension tuning will work wonders and wont cost too much, but i dont think it will gain you 6 sec, maybe 1 or 2 sec at best tbh. Brake pads and a good set of calipers/ steel brake lines would make braking better

    Tires and weight are the best bang for the buck... 6 seconds is too big a gulf at this point if you aren't going to gut the car

    I'm guessing the track used for the test is the Curborough Sprint Circuit near Lichfield.
    The AR-1 is going to be my dry track day tyre of choice for my Elise S3. I have only heard good things about that tyre. I've got a set of Nankang NS-2Rs to try first as I've only just started doing track days, having done two so far and thhe NS-2R seems to be a good compromise if there is rain.

    I've just got back from Nurburgring for the first time, using AR-1s on the track...i can confirm they are awesome. For context i previously used Ad08R on track and daily Goodyear Eagle F1's asym 5 on my road wheels - Just found your channel -sub'd- i look forward to more. :)

    I guess we all know that race tyres need to be hot to provide their best grip.
    Re. road tyres...
    Has anyone mentioned the 'rule of thumb' about tyres: they don't give their best grip when absolutely brand new. Apparently, it takes a 100km or so of regular driving, before the surface is at its best. (Happy to be corrected on this point, if anyone has updated info. 🙂)

    Well I'm struggling to see where another 6 seconds is in that unless you get real busy with the weight loss.
    Power might get you something like a couple of seconds if you're lucky but really I think rubber is probably the most effective mod on that track.
    Maybe chipping at it will add up but I think you're into smaller gains from here.

    Time to gut the pig! Pull everything nonessential out including seats, sound deadening, electric windows and air con, you could maybe go as far as replacing the windows with plastic but that might be difficult. A new set of uprated brake pads at the very least, maybe calipers and rotors if you can fit bigger ones but no need to go down the carbon ceramic route. A professional alignment would be advisable after weight and brakes. After that the only route is probably more power but I still don't think you're going to close the gap

    Would be interesting to see how the tyres perform after a few hundred kms since I heard most tyres need to wear off the baking wax of somesort. After being worn in a bit they might peform nicer.

    Brakes and tyres similar to the slicks used in this episode gave us our biggest difference in racing. Then weight.
    Power, bushes, suspension, etc, were very minor

    If you are trying to compare times down to a tenths and especially hundredths of a second, get a bluetooth 10Hz GPS receiver and an app for the phone to measure lap times. All together is not more than 100 - 120 £.

    Today’s lesson: Tire pressure is huge.

  • @a64738
    @a64738 4 месяца назад

    Rookie mistake, you can not measure the air pressure on cold tires even on regular tires. From cold 15c tires to 35c warm tires using regular non track tires you end up with pressure going from 2.2 to 2.4 2.5 which is WAY to high and you end up only the middle of the tire wears out. I did that mistake with my first car, once...
