Flatbedders rule! Your load. Your load securement. Your safest checks every 25 then 200 miles. YOUR SATISFACTION that's its ALL done by YOU. You look in your mirrors on the highway and YOU did that.

You pretty much nailed it on pulling reefer. Been driving over 40 yrs, and most of it has been reefer; some dry van and end dump, but reefer most. Im too old now to switch to flatbed, although I have considered curtain side. Nowadays, with e-logs and governed trucks, it has really become trying. Keep positive, you post great videos and I know they help a lot of lesser experienced drivers, both male and female. I also enjoy the vids of your side trip adventures, so when freight picks up enjoy and share. God Bless

On top of the fact you have to listen to it all night. I did reefer years ago. You need to get used to listening to it! Years later I pulled pneumatic tanks. Yellow corn flour. The food industry in general is screwed up! But for all you reefer drivers out there, here is how you get around the long wait times. Now before I even get to the place I can hear the crying on the CB. "I've been here for 14 hours waiting to unload"! So I'd check in ON TIME! Yeah ok go get in line. Ok, but just so you know, I'm on time, I think I have enough fuel to run the reefer for an hour, maybe two. If your load gets hot, it's your problem. "BACK INTO DOOR #3"! Worked every time!

Its not what you drive its how you drive it that represents
Your self on the road health weise yeah skate board or step deck is the way to go .
      Garbage wagons (reefers) and
Dry Box will brake you down in a few short years ..
I should have stayed working a skate board .

Enjoyed video.Been a reefer driver in Europe for 17 years.Really enjoyed it.Difference is we get paid by the hour so if a customer delays us we are getting paid and our company bills the customer waiting time.

I tried the flatbed trailer thing; didn't like it! I hauled steel coils out of LTV Cleveland Ohio. My trainer insisted on chaining down "Homicide style"!!! I was able to talk him into letting me load "suicide style". I STILL wasn't a fan. I was dedicated to hauling coils "eyes up". But, I wasn't making any money. I got lucky when I put my application in at Marathon Canton. That was much better. I retired 8 yrs ago at age 42. Doing my own thing now. Life is good!!!

What a breath of fresh air and the dimples help too. I will be starting soon, I am looking at a step deck now. I did consider reefer for a little but your commentary was right on spot. Not worth it to sit at loading docks all day and than have to deal with the attitude. I also take pride in what I load and believe it or not, securing loads. Nothing like a nicely secured load with a great tarp job to boot. Good luck and thank you for the info.

As you mentioned, I experienced pretty much all that stuff pulling a van, except the toll booth at the gate.
One time I went to a food place and my company (Schneider) informed me that they refused to pay a lumper fee to this particular outfit. So I was stuck unloading by myself. I got everything unloaded but was told that I had to sort the stuff out and place it on pallets. It took hours. I finally got that done and they then told me I had to shrink wrap all the pallets. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I told them to go eff themselves. I got detained at the exit gate and just drove through the wooden stick retainer at the gate. I thought I was going to get arrested, or fired by Schneider, but nothing happened. Actually I was more pissed at Schneider for not having my back.

"Traffic is just part of the job"...it sure is tough to remember that sometimes with the way people drive nowadays. I'm pretty new to flatbedding and the carrier I'm with does a mix of flat/reefer/dry. I'm liking flatbedding so far though. Haven't tarped yet and haven't had to use chains yet(just straps). I'll never forget the first time I pulled a flatbed(after 10 years of pulling boxes)...every time looking in the mirror and expecting to see the side of the trailer and having to get use to seeing nothing there. Strange experience!

Thank you, this was the video to watch! I drove a reefer, you hit all the best points about how rediculous it was and how rotten most of the recieving and shippers were about everthing! I drove miles all the way through Los Angelos, no where to park but for goodness sake don't arrive an hour early, don't be late, as if I had that kind of control over traffic, Lol! I wondered weather flatbed driving and other trucking jobs were like OTR reefer jazz!

Back in the Eighties I hauled produce mostly from California to the Infamous Hunts Point Market in the Bronx. Back in those days, I drove for Carretta Trucking out of Paramus, Nj then I transferred to their terminal in Fontana California. At 67 I'm getting ready to retire and never want to look at another truck again...lol All kidding aside I had many good times driving long haul, but back in those day's you were expected to run in violation of the hours of service rules, load and unload your truck, back-breaking work. I don't know if I will miss driving or not but I'm going to have to give it up because my health is starting to go downhill. Be safe Cindy, God Bless you.

This was an interesting video. Agree that the waiting can sometimes be ridiculous with reefer. But something to consider is the risk of injury. There's an element of risk in lifting and climbing. When I pulled reefer, I rarely touched freight.

Not sure its the same person but sounds like someone I used to know... She had long legs and just liked to "shock" people when they would see her step out of the truck. Pure curiosity Cindy.. best load, most unusual load, of course worst load, really terrible receiver location (you had one that was narrow city streets & just getting dark), any loads you will not haul, and the shortest & longest hauls. Flatbed all the way! I drove past about 20 or 30 reefer trucks waiting to get loaded or unloaded one time as I was making my delivery. They looked like they had probably been there forever. They were on my truck like white on rice as usual when you are a flatbed driver. I was done in 20 30 minutes tops. I wonder how long those drivers were still sitting there after I left 😅😎🤔🧐..

But to make a long story short. My husband don't want anything to do with trucking, I fill out the application and they will be training me on 5/29/18..The Owner told me the last two womans did not make it after one month. TO ALL METALS Tim let me go due to my second trainer say I don't know where to place the Coil, not true. I have videos on everytime I did my job with my first Trainer he video tapes me. I know how to do the job and I love what I was doing. I was being rushed like always and yes I jumped off the side of the trl and hurt my knee. But I did not have these problems with the first guy that trained me. I don't think that was right for him to say that was the reason why he was letting me go.But now I see why he said no woman makes it at this company when it like you look for something wrong in a person. But I just wanted to say something. The next woman yall hire won't make it and I wonder why.I ask can I start with one load a day and work my way up to two loads a day and he said no. I really appreciate you guys giving me a chance and I'm going to miss it. But it will be greater later. God Bless All Metal.

What makes a flatbed different than a reefer or dry van is that they offload you from the side... your schedule is much more flexible... the reefer and the dry van, are the same, you have to dock on an appointment time... the shippers and receivers, cause a lot of wait time... this is the big hullabaloo in truck driving, the drivers don't get paid for wait time and it cuts into their drive time!

You seem like a knowledgeable guy, so will I ever be presented with and/or benefit from loading/unloading my trailer at mainly job sites, I.e opr at lunch or just left (4-5pm) granted I have proper permission to use equipment? Or would there be soo much red tape to cut through with a middle-sized company to just be better off sitting and waiting?

I've never hauled reefer but I've been through places like Dodge City, Ks and like you said they're sitting in this stinking mudhole of a truck stop waiting for their 2:00 AM appt. No thanks on reefer.
About women and flatbed....my company hired a bunch of women who either didn't like the work and quit or did crazy things and got fired. I like having some control over how and where the stuff is loaded. I agree with everything you said about flatbed hours, conditions, and extras compared to the others. I don't like oversize unless you're gonna do it all the time like a pro and have the equipment for the job.

I have always desired step deck for variety of delivery destinations and i have noticed the friendliness as well. You may just have made a difference in my life cause I am currently seeking info on reefer hauling as an owner operator.

The produce district in NY. It is (or used to be) a terribly crime ridden area. Along with the worst in attitudes the east coast had to offer. It used to be if you got in bad with your dispatcher he'd run you around there for a few weeks to remind you who's boss. Yeah, I quit reefers pretty quickly lol.

I started trucking in 2004. I had heard all the horror stories about Walmart jerking truckers around and decided that I would never pull a van. I would have hurt somebody. I bought a car trailer and in 2006 I bought a heavy haul trailer. Like you said, 98 % of the time the customer is happy to see you.

Hello Flatbed chick, Been running reefer and dry van, a lot of power only. A lot of the things you said are true! I''ve been driving for 22years. And it's not getting any better! I decided to buy my own, and its better. BUT I am so tried of it, so within weeks I'm headed in to Salt lake city to pick up my first flatbed ever! A little worried but I started not knowing anything about truck, so this is no difference. Happy trails stay safe!

well reefer vs flatbed? reefer vs over dimension ? heavy haul? if you chose a specialty in flatbed such as OD, heavy haul or hazmat I think you could make quote a bit more than reefer but you need to specialize, just flat vs reefer, reefer would probably be best

  • @inpeacewithgod
    @inpeacewithgod 5 лет назад +1

Right on . with dry van or reefer receivers think that you owe them. Flats it`s rare that you have to wait

I have pulled dry van, reefer and flatbed. I have had as many as 15 stops in a day on flat bed. Try hitting 15 docks/day on dryvan or reefer. I would rather pull flatbed. Not crazy about tarping, but it is part of the job.

I've had quite a few, I think my max was 10 ? in one day hauling steel sheets. I def wouldn't want to do that in a reefer or van. Pull in, they come out to you with a forklift, sign your papers and off to the next stop. :-)

  • @joshuabradburn3748
    @joshuabradburn3748 5 лет назад

They definitely are a lot happier to see you arrive with a flat bed. Had some weird times with flat bed, like loading dump trucks that had to be hot-wired to start, on a boxcar loading ramp, parked on the rails near San Bernardino with a train coming. Been lucky with Reefer, lots of MacDonalds fries loads, and the Martin-Brower facilities are always very professional. No crap like "day pass" fees to get into the yard to deliver. My favorite was dry bulk. Delivering to cement silos, half the time nobody is even around. Just pull up, blow off the cement, and leave at your own pace.

On the downside, it would appear that you have to secure the load (and keep checking it) and tarp in all kinds of weather.

I used to drive years ago before cell phones and elogs...GPS was just getting going. I pulled a flatbed. What a royal pain!!! I was always filthy and sweaty. Plus I was climbing up on top of 15ft high lumber loads and it was super dangerous. I was young and dumb and didn't care then. I didn't get paid a single red cent for tarping back then. When I learned the company was charging the customer 2-300$ to tarp...I was pissed and that was it for me. I dreamed of pulling a dry van or reefer...You guys were always clean and wore sandals and shorts and had super clean cabs. I know there are huge lines at warehouses and now I hear about the load and unload "appointments'...sounds tough...but still. I dunno how you do it. Having a step deck is a little easier to clammer around on. And tie down can be a little quicker. One thing I thought would be great for stepdeck or drop deck would be to get a gig hauling aircraft engines. Easy load and drop, No lines. But I hear you need a billion $$ in liability ins.Anyway, if you enjoy it, so be it. Maybe do more vids of you loading unloading etc ...outside the truck stuff. Thanks. I like your attitude. You keep it cool most times. Hard to do in that profession.

I never liked hauling lumber, it wasn't too bad at a few of the places I went to they pulled the tarp over the load and all you had to do was bungee it. Lumber is heavy also....I haven't done a single load of lumber since I became an o/o and I try not to haul anything that's very heavy or require a big tarp, I love picking out my own loads. :-)

WELL SAID but I would like to add..... as an owner operator, we love and prefer reefer loads any day. Reason; it SOMETIMES can bring $6+/mile try calculating $6x800 or sometimes 1200+ miles.. you get the picture RIGHT.... plus please don't forget about detention time our favorite, the longer they take to unload the more $$$ you make while you're resting. Yes there are CONS hauling reefer but there are more PROS then CONS for owner operators.

Wow I remember the madhouse of refrigerated receivers . Too hectic ! Pharmaceutical loads were my favorite . Almost like pulling an empty trailer. Show up at the receiver anytime and you're the only one there! Oh, hello.Only thing is they were very touchy about reporting in about the temperature on those . The fees for lumpers can be turned to the drivers advantage . In the company I worked for they would pay the same pay to the driver for doing the lumping ! I made some good extra money that way . Had a health problem and had to stop driving but coming back to it now considering flatbed actually for the reasons you explain ,or tankers frankly for the money . But we'll see . Spell correct doesn't think 'lumpers' is a real word...funny
