I don't understand why camera manufacturers keep pushing the "light and compact" aspect on professional cameras. Size and weight are good for stable footage, ergonomics, button distribution, inputs and crew workflow. Small and compact stuff has its place, but it's not high end professional work. Plus 4k is overrated already, 6-8k is just marketing.
True canon fanboy, I like how fast the screen is 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
R5c is fuld freme ………
The only wish I have is a C70 with glowing buttons! I do not need 6k and this bulky body. Canon should make a 5-inch/touchscreen monitor for its Cinema line. It could plug into the remote connection. That would be magic.
Blackmagic makes Canon to drop the C400 very fast. I love competition, it is great for the consumers.
12:25 I think if Sony had released a triple base ISO camera, RUclips would be collectively shitting its pants. Canon did it, so nobody cares 😂
Bla bla bla… reaction videos have infected everyone 🤮
Update: after watching more videos on the c400 I found out the screen has a lot different places you can mount it. I’ve seen it mounted on the camera without the handle I’ve seen it mounted with the handle I even seen it mounted on the camera while on a gimbal and mounted off the camera and on the side of the gimbal. That changes a lot for me. The auto focus and lowlight is also improved. And it’s lighter than what it looks like.
stop this nonsense. you don't need full frame. 99% of all movies ever made are super 35
Could have named that tri-gain ISO or something
The R5c is a full frame cinema camera and has been out for three years now? I love mine but your title seems like there hasn’t been one out for a long time now.
I am wondering if my C70 has the reinforced hinge. I ended up getting it from hunts and I'm pretty sure it was the original packaging. Canon is having trouble activating my insurance.
Canon: Just give me c100 mark III (4k s35 RF ) don't change anything else ill be happy....
I purchased a C 70 and it was excellent, however I did return it based on the fact that the crop sensor was not giving me the look that I wanted. This should do the trick then I look forward to it’s availability
I purchased a C 70 and it was excellent, however I did return it based on the fact that the crop sensor was not giving me the look that I wanted. This should do the trick then I look forward to it’s availability
what strange list. "let me use my lenses, make me look pro" Then complains that the camera is modular and doesn't work like a DSLR strange
Nice Video! I`m still sooo happy with my C70 and will be for more years for sure !
The C400 is definitely aimed at upgrading the C200. The C70 is not getting replaced by this.
why?!
C400 is the C70 upgrade
@@pablomarin1746 I disagree. C70 is a different animal primarily regarding the body style via LCD placement and more. C70 is more versatile. This, as mentioned in this review, is a C200 resurrection ... I avoided the C200 because of its build.
Sound it Ouit Films: "FINALLY a full frame RF Cinema Camera"
R5c: Am I joke to you?
No but the battery life is :P I got it my self.. and it made me get two c70 beside that camera for video
Yeah I didn't even know they made RF glass that wasn't full frame... Until I grabbed the c70.
@@pizzlesshorts I got speedboosters on both my C70s and use the EF glass.. and on my R5C i have the ND adapter to EF.. then the R5C has ND "build in" and the two C70s are "full frame" :P and they use the same lenses.. and old EF L glass and old EF cinema glass is not bad at all :)
@@baekmedier That sounds like an amazing setup! I have some very old EF class that I purchased on Facebook marketplace. Although the 50 mm 1.4 EF really dropped my jaw. I love it and I cannot wait to use it. Unfortunately working full-time as a truck driver is killing me. I am working every single day from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. keeping my hopes and spirits high for the future.
@@pizzlesshorts I mean today it almost doesent matter what camera you use.. they all look good if used right… lighting is more important :)
But i only found that out by working with crazy expensive cameras and owning som entry level Cinema cameras like the C70 and R5C my self.. in the end all never cameras are great i find.
But the Dream setup was 2 full frame RF Cinema cameras with build in NDs and a RF 24-105 f2.8 on both.. and then just glue it on there and set and forget it 😅 but yeah.. not gonna happen now.
Thanks for your thoughts. A little off topic, but when or how often do you still use your C100ii on a paid shoot?
Maybe like every six months I need an extra angle on a multi-cam shoot where I know the final deliverable is 1080.
I never understood why compagnies keep saying it's "7999$" instead of just saying "8000€", do they really think we are that dumb? 😆
I have an FX9 and I am thinking of going to the C400. Also thinking if it would be a downgrade but looking at it on paper the C400 beats it and does more.
Still loving my C200 and R6!
I've been saving money over the years, and I'm torn between Canon and Sony. I like Sony because there's a lot of lenses to choose from, including third-party ones, and it's smaller compared to Canon. What I hate about Sony is their Fx3 CFexpress Type-A, not Type-B. On the other hand, what I love about Canon besides the Type-B card is their color science, and what I hate about them is their lack of third-party lenses same with Nikon.
I think it's a great price. Do I NEED this camera...maybe. Do I WANT this camera...yes.
The only wish I have is a C70 with glowing buttons!
@@fsb6724 Yeah, I'd take that too.
The R3 gets overlooked. My DOP friend in LA uses one for his side projects. I just mine daily fo photo and video.
The R3 4K video normal profile looks great, I rarely even bother with raw. The normal profile on the C400 looks even better
Eric - I for the record, I've never lost a second worrying that my C70 didn't look like a "legit" cine camera. I look at the release of the C400 with interest - it's still a little pricey in my book but time will tell if it fills a niche between the C70 and higher-end Canon full frames. It amazes me how few shooters complain of the lack of an EVF on the C70 - I own one and it's useless out in sun without one (I'm using a old Zacuto EVF). Thanks for the nod to the venerable C100 - bullet-proof screen hinge and EVF - I wish Canon would get sentimental and bring back this great form factor with a decent offering of codecs in 4K.
I'm happy with my C70.... Would love a C400 but not for that price haha.
all good BUT... im not running away from DGO sensor... we need a full frame DGO sensor.
If they made that.. it would be easy to just have the RF 24-105 glued on to a c400.. yeah.. not this time.. have to wait for the C500 mark 3
I want and need that highlight retainment in C-log 2.. cant bother working with the RAW all the time.. :)
My list was:
- Full frame DGO sensor
- RF mount
- Full XLR
- Genlock + timecode
- Build in ND filters
- Screen that can be removed
- 32-bit float audio recording in camera
CVP did tests already.. c300 and c70 has better highlights than the new c400.. hate that. Low light?? dont need it.. hmm most people can afford a light if they can afford a cinema camera..
This exactly
I would add open gate recording to that and I’m all in!
And after watching all the reviews, the image quality didn't impress me at all, I find the C70 look more pleasing / "cinematic". It looks too sharp, too clinical for my taste.
It’s not about lightning a scene.
Triple ISO is useful in many ways. I don’t think this camera replaces the C70 market at all. It’s a different tool.
@@urielsantistebanfilms Yep, its more a FX6 killer i think.. And because they really needed to make a full frame cibema camera to ude with that RF 24-105 f2.8 (it is their lenses they make the money on afterall)
My question is can I use EF cinema lens on it
with an adapter of course.
@@scottievee7467 will that be like rf to ef mount
@@johnadesola1382 correct.
R5c is a RF Cinema Camera. Just saying.
Is it though?
Yeh no. Almost, but it is not a cine cam by any means. Cine cam is about ergonomics as much as sensor quality, and codecs
@@SoundItOutFilms I mean, I have two of them and use them regularly. Got the 2nd one after having rented the C70 for a bit. I do have to rig them out of course but the R5c plays nice with the rest of the Canon C series. I guess I got lucky that it works in my case.
I think I live only a hour or two north of you in Boston. I'd be into meeting up with you sometime if our schedules overlap conveniently. I'm up in Keene, NH.
@@lucasvivante8988 Hmm. Strangely, I think there are a handful of folks who have said that in general most cine specific cams are not all that ergonomic given they are often a box. When rigged out on rails, with a V-mount battery and display, the R5c kinda works so far as I've experienced. Mind you, I flip back and forth between stills and video a lot so my ideal format is likely different than that of video only.
@@CDStudios red are not cine camera. They are professional camera for mid budget production. They are not "cinema" as "going on theater". Arri cam are not box, varicam is not a box, sony venice is not a box.
a full frame C70 will still happen too
Don’t think so. It will be S35.
C70 - S35, DR focused, compact and portable.
C400 - FF, Low light, broadcast, speed read outs focused.
What I would want it’s a DPAF and a second generation DGO sensor. Although DJI has solved the problem of poor AF.
@@urielsantistebanfilms i would bet money on a full frame C70
People are never happy. I remember when 4k was the next level so they can crop in. Now they wishing for 6k. What’s next 10k lol.
nobody needs all this nonsense - only if you know it might be projected large so feature, short or cine-ad.
Capitalism...
But that "People never happy" is what makes the filmmaking industry or even humankind can develop.
If we're satisfied with what we have now, there will be no improvement in the industry.
Well, standards change as technology advances. That’s what this is. With 4k being more common, 6k is the next phase for resolution. Multi base iso for better low light performance is next as well. Once we max out full frame, medium frame that’s as robust and easy to use like full frame will be the next stage. What’s wrong with advancements?
So right dude. I'm chuffed with 4K.
While some of the promo footage for C400 looks great, its release has me mostly feeling more assured that what I really want is a second C70...
I think that people that have the C500/C300 and like them will seriously consider the C400. For people that love the C70 will like the C400 but will only “upgrade” if they have specific use case for it.
Nah I have a c300iii and I’m passing on this one. Not enough of an upgrade in my opinion. It’s obviously really cool and if I didn’t already have a Canon camera the C400 would be a no brainer purchase though. But to switch from one to the other doesn’t seem worth the hassle and the money
I have the c70 and considering the c400 as an A cam
now they got to bring more RF lens to market to rival what Sony offers with G-Masters and native functions
C400 plus C70 is the perfect combo for interviews for me, will probably rent one for bigger productions to go along with my C70
Isn't the R5C a full frame RF cinema camera?
Nah it's a mirrorless, albeit a good one.
Yes it is
@@jacopoabbruscato9271 Lol what? The C400 is also mirrorless. Canon doesn't make cameras with mirrors anymore.
@@Studiotek "Mirrorless" as in "hybrid camera that isn't specifically designed with video in mind but rather to do both stills and video". Cinema and video cameras never had mirrors in the first place
@@jacopoabbruscato9271 R5C is still a cinema camera, hence the "C" in the name. Can it shoot stills? Yes, but it's the cinema version of the R5. That would be like saying the Blackmagic cameras are not cinema cameras because they are shaped like a normal hybrid mirrorless camera.
Skipped Canons video and went straight to this bc I knew it would have all the info I need
Why does no one want an evf? I want an evf!
The C70 shot in any flavor of raw is very crispy in terms of sharpness.
I agree with this reasonable review of features, and as with every camera announcement, it all comes down to your NEEDS to satisfy your clients, and how much you want to stretch for your personal WANTS as a professional creative. I have two C70s for my corporate video production work, and I love that they are identical in image and handling for both dual camera interviews and during b-roll when I use one on a gimbal and one rigged up handheld. While there are some nice-to-haves with the C400 announcement, none of the new features are game-changing enough for me or my clients to drop $8k on.
I have a c70 and the triple base ISO is really what’s gonna do it for me. I considered switching to an FX6 for the dual native that way I can shoot in any situation and not worry. I think the better AF is big too cause c70 AF isn’t amazing but that depends on what you shoot. I love my c70 but it has some things I don’t like like the low light and the crop so I’m doing some research
@@calebkiesel I will certainly be curious to see more real world tests on the triple base ISO and how it compares to the C70 DGO sensor. Better AF is always attractive, but it does the job for sit-down interviews and broll scenes. Having full body AF might be interesting when gimbal operating and the subject's head and face is too small in frame for the C70 to pick up. The crop doesn't bother me, as I still own a ton of EF lenses and use the 0.71x RF to EF adapter to bring the FOV to almost full frame equivalent. The C70 is a bit soft, so that downscaled 6k in 4k mode would be a nice upgrade.
What is with the focus hunting. What is the camera?
The prophecy has been fulfilled 🤓😎
How do you feel the +2 luminance mode on the c70 compares to your highbright monitor? (nevermind, remembered your past video comparing, close but still the 2200 nit monitor wins out.
I also have a theory the operators were running the c400 screen at the default luminance levels, since it has like 6-10 steps in luminance now. In the BTS it looks like the darn thing is turned off, I think they messed up.
I own the c300 and the c70 and both have the +2 lum setting, so since the c400 has way more steps of lum setting, I think it will actually be brighter still.
The biggest issue I've got with all cine camera's out there at the moment is being unable to record 32-bit float audio internally. For run-and-gun shooting it would be a complete game changer
Just cz the GH7 does it doesn't mean all cameras need it. You can still record 32 bit float audio externally. Professionals always make sure audio or video don't clip. So it's all fine. You want to record high dynamic range audio and then edit the gain in post just cz u didn't take the time to check if it's clipping beforehand??? Work smarter.
2:20 Vivek and Trump, take your like good sir.
It appears the 6k is only available in Raw recording which was disappointing. Canon also doesn’t care about frame rates. They’re always late with new higher frame rate options. I also hoped they would price this a little more aggressively to compete more with the FX6. I know it’s a nicer starting price point than the C300III and C500II though. The camera feels like a great “catch up” camera which is what Canon does. I still love my C200. I might upgrade to C70 instead of this now. Not sure. Nice video. Thanks.
Not so sure about the opening comment here?
@@scottievee7467 about the 6k?
@@monellifilms Only 4k @ 120fps. You can shoot 6k in all the codecs.
@@scottievee7467 that’s not what the specs say on B&H. 6k is only listed as an option under Cinema Raw light. Where did you see 6k was available in all codecs?
@@monellifilms You are right. That's odd. I shoot RAW LT so I'm still making the purchase. @21:14 it shows codecs ad Frame rates.
ruclips.net/video/Lqn9Alkj5bU/видео.html
The focal length on the super 35 sensor with my RF glass is the reason I ran out to get the speed booster. Luckily I found a cinematographer in the Boston area who had one that he never used.
idk man... the price is nice though. But no dgo sensor? so, YEARS for simply another mount? I am happy that there is finally a rf mount fullframe cinema camera with a good form factor but why not working on a closed system like dji, with easy and stable video transmission or built in 32bit audio which would revolutionize all documentary filmmakers like panasonic does, or hybrid af modes like dji that lets you easily work TOGETHER with the AF. or whatabout a global shutter dgo sensor with good dynamic range AND without rolling shutter problems.
Exciting camera.
Every one of us has different needs and check lists according of our line of work.
Price of the camera is good enough for the right user I think.
For me, it will depend of the field test other people do, specially in the dynamic range field since my work don’t always let me light a scene.
Going full frame it’s always a benefit and that PL mount converter? Very cool.
If this was a DGO sensor all across frame rates it would be a pre order for me I think.
ohhh come on! you will get it anyway lol it looks incredible!!!!
Worst thing about the C70 is that the sensor is not even APSC - it’s even narrower. The aspect ratio is so yuck.
That’s my guy Peter from Canon. Texting him now to tell he’s a movie star of sorts.
At 11:40 I giggled. Something about not buying another camera, love it
The price is too high. The only benefit of this camera is autofocus. Just my opinion based on how I shoot.
**The only benefit for me**
Would be better.
You can mount the screen wherever you want.
It does not require the top handle.
Love to see the sunny sixteen mug!
Q: was this filmed with the C70? The focus seems to freak out a little bit e.g. 5:10
Yeah, with a Sigma 24. Something about this shot made the C70 really struggle more than usual... face detection was enabled but I should have also tapped on my face, if it was “tracking” it would have locked on better.
@@SoundItOutFilms I see, cheers!
Absolutely excellent, thanks so much. I wish more people could hear what you said about "things that are way more important than spending money on cameras". Well said.
I saw the C400 in person today at Cine Gear and it looks amazing when it’s all rigged out..
I bet for productions like Jackass it would be perfect. Honored to have you in the comment section!
Insightful video!!
I was wondering what you thought of this release!
@2:59 happens to me all the time and I hate that 😅
red raptor be rf though
always nice to have to video outputs. question ist, if it is possible to send two separate signals, one clean feet for video village and one for focus puller. Also SDI comes handy when doing Concerts. I own the Zcam E2 F6 but It only has one HDMI and it has too much latency. and I am always scared, that one day, the HDMI port might break. the C400 is a nice alrounder.
Great video! Sorry Sony, I think we have a new king of lowlight!! The three native ISO is the biggest selling point for me! This is absolutely revolutionary! The c400 has set a whole new standard for future cameras!
You got me at the end there 👏
I don’t see the monitor being too big of a deal once I get some muscle memory for the camera and rigging, but I shoot a lot of gimbal stuff with my c70, and now working with a detached monitor is going to complicate things for my standard setup.
Currently I under sling an rs4 pro with arms off of an easy rig so space is at a premium for the monitor, where as with my c70 I could rig with the flip out monitor in mind and use the arms for audio or other gear.
Good video!
I was looking why your video sometimes is out of focus, i guess its your Sunny sixteen cup (your camera think it is a eye?). I am a beginner videographer (i am a photographer) and use my Canon R6 II now for video and it's works great for now. greetings from Holland, Mike
This is the only opinion that mattered to me on this camera haha. You make a good point on the monitoring. Don’t want to be stuck on rigging the top-handle monitor but now will have to “guesstimate” with the external monitor. Other than that, I think Canon did a bang up job!
Everything you said... and some. Ordered it today. I also have the 24-105 2.8. Pumped!!
Going to be such a killer combo!
@@SoundItOutFilms Gonna sell one of my C70's and an R5c to offset some cost. I think the C400 will get some mileage from me. I too was a very early C70 camera guy. It's all about the image.
Nice work
Seems just like a C500mk2 with an RF mount. Nothing to tempt me away from the 70.
I feel bad for the guy who sold his C70 to buy the Black magic cube camera. Probably would have been way better off waiting.😊 I love this full frame RF and if I was a millionaire I'd be buying this. Although I need to start booking some clients before I can buy anything. My C70 has some antique glass on it for the full frame look. Lol
All the things you mentioned seems like good enough reason for a professional like yourself to upgrade to this camera, either as a replacement for your C70 or as your new A cam. I own the C70 and C500 II and I feel this will be a great addition to my lineup as a cinematographer who averages about 3 multi-camera shoots per month
I could justify it if I really wanted to... but I'm trying to avoid GAS
@@SoundItOutFilms too late we all already have incurable GAS, If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas...no buts bro, it looks enough like the C70 where your wife won't even notice...I've already planned some phantom car and camera repairs so I'll have the money by the time it ships
Wait a second You're from New England but just showed a video of Trump. Are you trying to not get hired anymore? LMAO
Who cares? The fact that people wouldn’t hire you because you have a picture of a Republican president is pretty wild.
The footage i have seen so fare from the C400 doesnt impress so far. It looked less cinematic than the C70 and the 16 Stops of dynamic Range doesnt sound like on par with the 16+ of the c70.
I also miss a mechanical image stabilizer. Stabilizing less material in post would be an important argument for me.
The Base ISO at 12800 and the better AF is nice but compared with the FX6 it seems like the c400 has less dynamic range at 12800.
I like the fact that the canon c70 is so versatile. You can make it look very inconspicuous with a small lens, which is a real advantage in some situations. Or you can rig it with an external battery, display and large lens to a professional looking level. And then it even has some advantages over a naked c400. so far the c400 hasn't convinced me that much.
I think the Sony Alpha 7s IV or whatever it will be called (maybe FX3 II) or a new Blackmagic Poket Cinema Camera will probably make the C400 look not good. I will stay with my loved C70 until then.
I'm getting some crackle in that audio. 😢😢😢
I enjoyed this. I went to the fx3 recently buy used to have a c100ii. I know I am also slow to upgrade. Still, I enjoy watching these videos.
Chapters
Was looking at the reveal as well and comparing it to out C70s. It just doesn't justified the $8,000 for us with the economy being the way it is right now..
#1 - we dont own any RF lenses so all EF with the 0.71 adapter get the "full frame" look
#2 - we don't have those kind of clients. and if we're shooting high end stuff, we usually rent an Amira
#3 - not looking for higher resolutions but rather, higher DR. One of our fav cameras is the Arri classic, only 2K
#4 - all screens suck, we always use an external monitor
#5 - nice to have SDI, we've seen other cameras that we like and have it but then they dont have internal NDs, so we'll take those instead :)
