The year is 1720, and Swedish forces have landed on the Baltic coast. Their target is St. Petersburg, but Peter the Great has rallied a force ready to meet the swedes on the battlefield. With a victory here, Peter the Great hopes to end the 20 year long war. This is the Great Northern War! This battle was fought using Empire Total War. Enjoy the Epic Battle :D

Actually it was the Swedes who were the aggressive close combat army at this time. They were known for preferring to fire only once they saw their enemies eyes and then charge in. Sweden was also the last army of Europe to abandon the pike since it was so close combat oriented.

The Swedish Army during the Great Northern War used 17th century tactics. It still had pike infantry and the cavalry/infantry ratio was more like 17th century armies, meaning that the proportion of cavalry was larger than typical 18th century armies.

Hey Pixie, if you like the uniforms of the 18th century wars, you might enjoy the mod Imperial Splendour, which fleshes out the different factions' army roster and brings more visual diversity and historical accuracy into it.
Also, I think you should definitely try the Colonialism 1600AD mod for Empire, it's an unfinished work, but it gives a great 17th century pike and shot impression! It's also quite historically accurate.

It's PLATOON FIRING, not fire by rank.( Fire by rank is 1st line firing, then 2nd then 3rd line) . Platoon firing is pockets of ALL THREE LINES firing.

Sweden was quite an empire once. Not many people know this, but Sweden had colonies in North America also (not just the Baltic area, etc.). It was in control of a place called New Sweden (1638-1655). This land today is split between Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It was given to Netherlands after the Second Northern War. Sweden also owned the Caribbean island of St Barthelemy and had multiple forts on the Gold Coast in Africa (today part of Ghana).

Don't know if anyone else noticed but, the Russian player put both his units of guard on the far right which is cool. The far right was considered the place of honor in formation. As far as I know the practice dates back to Alexander the great putting his companion cavalry and veterans in the far right to honor them. Just a cool little thing I'm guessing the Russian player was aware of.

Cossacks were not militia. They were a group of elite Ukranian warriors who have had years of experience and centuries of warfare as a tradition. Much like American Natives or Nepalese Gurkhas. They were specifically trained in Ukranian martial arts, horseback riding, sharpshooting, and sword fighting. Russians saw this small society of warriors and annexed them into their army.

18:35 The Russian infantry is actually firing by file. The ripple fire effect is referred to as "fire by file." Massed volley fire or firing in two or three ranks is referred to as "fire by rank.
The one mechanic I really wish that carried over from Empire to Napoleon was volley fire because by simply turning fire at will off in Empire allowed faster and more devastating firepower from your infantry, I will never get why in Napoleon they insisted only the first line fires regardless of fire at will or not.
I know I'm late but, Napoleon does have volley fire. Not that it's a good thing for any game though since it was extremely rare in real life

Why is his Empire looks so cool? I mean the bayonet and the hats are blinking and the way those soldiers walk is awesome for 2009 game.
Second question, what mod do you guys recommend for Empire ? I don't really play the campaign tho, just the battle.
In Empire, units can use walls and fences and will kneel behind them if you tell them to. Its very fun because it helps give some protection from enemy fire
For the next historical battle, please try to do the Battle of Breitenfield, if you can.

Actually I'm American, but Sweden is such an interesting place, with Vikings, and the Great Northern War, and their most famous king, Gustavus Adolphus. Sweden is the best country though, in Empire Total War.

hold down the right click and move the mouse around a bit to adjust where abouts and on what side of the wall they use for cover, it can be pretty fiddley. To properly get troops behind walls.
Apollo is my history teacher, I just watch his historical battles, the commentary makes it much better

Don't go from the north just shuttle troops across the baltic as the north gives them a lot of time to build an army
Also I own poland, lithuania, courland, denmark-norway's land hannover, brandenburg, and I traded livonia & ingria for karelia and arkhangelsk at the beginning of the game
ETW isn't a very hard campaign. When I played as the Swedes (Campaign- hard; Battle- Very hard) I managed to take over the whole of Russia by about 1718. I had made the Swedish Empire and taken the whole of Eastern Europe by 1750, but by now I was in a war against a massive coalition force of everyone who opposed me. I never got to finish my campaign as my game broke and I've never been able to get it to work since :(
Haha, just play aggresive in empire, win battles and you win easy. At 1751 i controlled all of europe and a big part of america, but the game crashed everytime i ended the turn after that.

Pixie, the wall can be used as cover. It's a game mechanic, there is a way you place them behind it and they get buffs and cover.

You can use the walls for protection in Empire. That is why the units were kneeling in front of it. And when Russia went to charge, his units stopped to kneel because the Russian player must have accidently selected the wall when they told their men to move.

The hakkapeliittas were disbanded before the great northern war. There were however regiments in the carolean army which had its origins in Finland :)

Leaffordes Hakkapeliittas were Finnish cavalry fighting in the Swedish army during at least the thirty years war. They got the name from their battle cry "Hakkaa päälle!"
They were not called Hakkapeliittas at the time, that is the invention of later Finnish "historians", and saying "The hakkapeliittas were disbanded before the great northern war" doesn't make sense, since there was no regiment called "Hakkapeliitta", so they couldn't possible retire. There was still Finnish cavalry by the Great Northern War.
As elelelssu stated, the Hakkapeliittas got their name/nickname from the battle cry "Hakkaa päälle" which can be translated to “Cut them down”. If you don’t believe me, a random dude on the internet, I would suggest you read the book “The Army of Gustavus Adolphus (2)” which is written by the polish historian Richard Brzezinski.

not relly acrruate, the Great Northern War was between 1700-1718. not 1720. :P as king Karl XII was either killed or murderd, at fredricstone s Fort, in Norway, Winter 1718. so Official war ened 1718. may have end inofficial 1720. also with the Great Northern War, s Loss for Sweden, as "Empire or Great Nation" ended. :(
Also Units from Darthmod Empire gives alot more.. "units" to fit the "Great Northern War, more than normal Vanilia does". you have mixture of Swedish units. as you are an American, its understandable, that you are silly Apollo.

Sweden 300 years ago faced annihilation....it was only saved by it's own militancy the same one that put them in that situation....Peter The Great saw it as too costly to invade and occupy for that reason plus the emerging superpowers Britain and France were having none of it. Today Sweden does not face annihilation but financial ruin, urban deprivation and a growing and a self-induced culture of ethnic violence and rape....Sweden stood alone once as the dominant superpower of The North and sought to maintain it's position against an alliance of almost 15 nations bent on destroying through extreme violence, borne out of military might and supreme arrogance. The Swedes were incapable of understanding the real danger they were in then as little as they understand the perils they face today. The military might is gone the but the arrogance remains and is just as strong. And just as it was then The Swedes have no one else to blame for all misery they are in other than themselves.

In fact both teams (players) did use wrong tactics, so as a history nerd in that time and in that war (Great Northern War) I will say its not even close to a historical battle. How it should have look like.

The Teutonic order actualy mostly used mercenaries for infantry. The members of the Teutonic order only rode on horseback. P.S They did not use plate armour. Only chainmail.

Apollo, you can use cover in this game and Napoleon, stone walls at least. That's what that crouching is, that's a game mechanic.

The Cossacks and the Kazakhs are not the same people. You're pronouncing the former like the latter. I lived in Kazakhstan for 20 years. Kazakhs are from Kazakhstan, the Cossacks are from southern Russia and Ukraine.
Why don't gunpowder units in Warhammer have reload animations? It's so ridiculous considering they have plenty of already perfectly good examples of animations.

One of the stupidest thing in this game that they made cossacks a low tier infantry. In fact, cossack was the best close fighters and best horsmans... they were elite guardians of the Empire borders... and extremle loayl to Monarch

My battles are much bigger than this. Around 18-20 thousand on each side. Thats why I have the deployment mod.
Cossack is more like veteran unit that swear to Tsar and excellent st horse riding plus they conquer from Siberia to Alaska (If you know history)

No way. The Coassac lose in mele fight. They shuld optimizate that a much bether. Cossac is one of the more powerful troops in Russian Empire in that time. I do not know why the Devs of this game ignore that fact.
