How to Paint a Spotlight Effect

- James Gurney explains how to focus the light on one part of a plein-air painting of a 1962 Chevy Impala. He starts with a casein underpainting and paints the first washes with a limited palette of watercolor, then introduces some gouache passages for the final details.
He also demonstrates these effects using a white cube in actual sunlight, blocking some of the light with a cardboard frame, and showing what happens when the sun goes behind a cloud.

I am now positive that you are the Bob Ross of watercolor.
You hit all the criteria- 1. You’ve got a satisfying voice
2. You videos aren’t abrasive
3. Talent, you’ve got lots of that.
4. Nice antidotes that keep you entertained.
5. Probably the most important, your authentic.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art.
You’re the BEST
James I love your wholesome content. I’m only 18 but you’ve inspired me to start my journey as an artist with a venture into travel watercolour painting!
The guy across the street from me had one of those 62 Impalas but his was the two-door. He put an L88 Corvette engine in it and damn near killed himself hotrodding around town in it. Your painting is so nice and is exactly what one would see while walking through a dark parking lot with the overhead lights casting pools of illumination around and on top of the various cars at night. Thanks for this.
The physical demonstration of lighting scenarios made my brain snap to attention, super effective summation of a broad subject. I'm a digital artist so I think my brain is badly craving real, dimensional knowledge.
Love your videos... you paint like a master, but do not claim to be a master; teach like a pro, but not pretending to be a professor. That's why i enjoy so much your videos, together with your style that reminds me, i do not know why, Hopper.
You are a living legend Mr.Gurney. A person I would love to talk about to the next generations!
I’m a young illustrator, and I’ve always loved Dinotopia but since I found your channel you’ve really inspired me to get into plein air painting and life sketching! I’ve really noticed an improvement in my creativity and craft! Thanks for being so generous with sharing your work and philosophy.
Very Helpful mr Gurney! Thanks a lot!
I really like james gurney as an artist i love him, gobless you sir and more paintings to paint..... I am a big fan!!
Why the hell did it take so many years for me to stumble upon this channel and I have subscribed to many art channels? Mr. James I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the pains you take to explain the concepts. I wish you were my art teacher when I was in school.
The thing I really admire about highly skilled and professional artists like Mr. Gurney is that they have the ability to knock out a quality painting in a single session. I have enough skill as a painter to do something along similar lines as this painting, but I'd literally spend months in the process, using oil paints, going back and forth trying to get it right. The last painting I did I spent almost a year on. It's why I never became a professional artist.
Every single time I learn something new from your videos. Thank you. And your books are awesome, I am just rereading them.
Glad you like them!
@@JamesGurney not only me, also my son (16) :-) and I recommended them also to a younger colleague who will get them soon as well. He knew already Dinotopia. And looks I have a painting buddy now as well. All started with watching your "snow pile" video in March :-) Thank you.
@@JamesGurney but really: you always explain things so well. My son said: "if I only had an art teacher half as cool. Every video taught me more than one year at school".
I love your videos very much, they are entertaining, they get me motivated and I also learn a lot about my favorite thing in the world - painting. Thank you for that.
There are many tutorials for artist's out there, but you became my favourite. Not only because of your art and skills, but also because of your personality and creative video editing. "Color and Light" is also among the most essential books. Greetings from Germany.
We must protect gurney at all cost he is a national treasure hehe
This is the best cannel about painting. Thank you for the lessons! Este é o melhor canal sobre pintura. Obrigado pelas aulas!
James, what you're calling "ambient occlusion", I've called a "dark accent". Good to learn new terminology. Love the instruction.
Dark accent is not wrong if you use it in the context of compositional choices. Ambient occlusion is an area of the geometry that won't be receiving as much ambient bouncing light as the rest of the scene. It's a scientific term that's also heavily used in 3D rendering and video games.
1.7k thumbs up and 1 thumbs down (which was probably a mistake) just about says it all. As usual, a fantastic demonstration, with a highly informative and modest commentary. Thank you James.
James ... " Let me take you to the studio " ... is a wonderfully cinematic cut. It is so so Japanese cinema, where in the middle of a Samurai battle, we pause suddenly before the battle and we cut to a quiet preparation for the battle done long ago... and then we resume to the battle. You are a Samurai Master of Gouache ! Looking forward to more cinematic magic. Kudos for the added drama of non linear time.
300 likes with no dislikes just proves how good this channel is. I've just started painting and I just want you to know you're one of the reasons I want to get better.
Hi,James.I have read your book again and again.I still find out something to learn everytime I read. This video is amazing like always. Not to be dramatic but you really bright my day!love from Taiwan 🇹🇼
how do you invent values and colors and the painting ends up looking so damn perfect...
What a playful genius! This mind makes me feel inspired so much !
I always look forward to watching your videos, your art is absolutely stunning and you’re the reason I’ve started using gouache again. For a long time I didn’t know what to do with my paints, but your videos were both inspiring and extremely helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your creations with us, keep up the good work! (:
Thank you so much, Anne. I'm so glad you've found my videos helpful, and best wishes with your painting.
Thank you so much!
This is such an amazing content and it gets better by every upload! I'm recommending this channel and your books to anyone asking me for art advice. I learned a ton from your teaching over the years and it cost me almost nothing. I just wanted to thank you from my heart for what you do
The demonstration of clouds via the light defuser is brilliant. It brought me a new level of understanding that concept.
Man...YOU ARE GOOOOD. Thanks a lot for your wonderful work and sharing! Tack sååå mycket!.
Amazing painting!! 👍👍
I think it is very important for me to let you know how much of a value you bring to my mental canvas. I am a young artist and happened to stumble across one of your videos and since then I have been hooked very warm and relaxing it's just like a favorite program I tune into Whenever I feel up for some entertainment time you are my go too. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks. Making art is my favorite way to clear my mind from all the craziness out there, and I'm glad you like the way I share the process.
Love your teaching style!
Great example of lighting on a cloudy day using the diffuser. Those old cars are so fun to look at, my favs are the Bel Air. I'll miss the car shows this year!
That’s amazing! I love your paintings you’re truly an inspiration 💕
Fabulous info and painting... as always. Thank you very much.
Rembrandt would be proud. And I bet he would have appreciated the classy look of the Chevy Impala as well. 😉
You've given me a fun thing to imagine: Rembrandt in his black velvet cap at the wheel of his Chevy, playing Elvis on the radio and cruising for hamburgers.
@@JamesGurney I took my '62 Impala too many times to count to A&W's and the old drive-in movies back in the '70's. It was exciting times being young and silly.
@@JamesGurney hahaha! I knew your imagination was great, but I didn't know it was THAT great! Hopefully Rembrandt, in his Impala, would be cruising in a parade of dinosaurs!
I love the feeling that a spotlight effect can create. I'm still trying to figure out how to create the film noir type spotlight look when photographing people with budget lighting.
I was planning on taking up painting after i retired but hadn't decided what medium to concentrate on, I think I'll start with the cheapest thing close to gouache, cheap tempera paint, black white, dark brown to start. My abilities don't merit the expense of even cheap gouache. I love the idea of using index cards for quick studies and practice. I've got a jillion of those that will never be used for anything else. Your instructional videos are about the best and there are lots of good ones. I was tempted to try transparent watercolor first but didn't want pencil and wash effects, opaque looks more like what I want. I love your studies.
I love love love your paintings!
What a brilliant artist you are 👍
WHAT A GREAT TEACHER
I watch so many of your videos. Big fan here❤👍
Fantastic James! Love your videos.
It is so amazing that You called the car by its model name right in the beginning. That just added an additional dimension to this video :)
Youre the man James
incredible, i paint mainly in oils and my style is somewhat manic, i do mainly portrait but this has really opened my eyes. thank you.
Omg, I had that car! I called it "the bachelor," only worked for a month before the transmission went. Loved the seat, just like a overstuffed couch
Great artwork/painting James, and interesting info too, thankyou
I really appreciate the effort you made to express the knowledge you have on these subjects. Great as always.
Thank you for the examples and explanation. The demonstrations were so helpful to see the differences in situation that cause Soft and sharp edges of the same object under different circumstances.
Your videos are really relaxing and peaceful to watch - appreciate your work! Thanks!
Just an absolute pro!
the light effect just like theres a UFO floating above the car 😂😂
so dramatic and the color is so harmony
Brilliant sir. 👍🏼👍🏼😊
More great stuff! It will be great to see where I can apply this sort of look. Thanks again, James!
Congratulations James, it's wonderful !
Great Painting similar to your Boeing Aircraft painting you did some months ago...more,more please
what a nice painting
At around 6:40 in the video, I was surprised to see the customisation of your painting apparatus; this is gives a lot of satisfaction in that such improvisation is what I do all the time. What matters is the end result and its impact on the audience!
Great tutorial; many thanks and respect!
Great video James! I remember I read an article of yours in an art magazine before I knew about your channel, where you were recommending going outside to study various colors of the sky. That kind of half-scientific, half artistic approach is what attracts me to your work.
You are the best instructor. (sigh) I was 10 when they made that car. Now I'm thrilled that I had a Gurney lesson in light, shadows, color & underpainting... But I feel old. 🤣 Oh... It also makes me remember growing up sitting by my dad watching Dan race. 😉🏁
I love your videos! :D So helpful and inspiring.
You're on top of your game, James! Superb.
Values are spot on! great job
This is such a great breakdown of your you do this effect. Thank you!!!
Wow love this!❤️
you are a master, I admire your work
Gosh! Just great!
That is some really good painting! I really like this spotlight effect.
brilliant - I learnt a lot from this one James - much appreciated...
good to see you back, youre great
Love your art and your video lessons.
Thank you.
Love all your work, James. Dramatic!
Also doesn't hurt that I've always been fond of '62 Chevys.
Thanks for the pleasure of yours art skills big inspiration for all
Wondering when you choose to use a Zorn palette vs a palette with blue? Also love those cars, my grandpa had a ‘64 Impala.
I love this. Watching you explain and paint helps me improve my own work. I’d classify myself as intermediate, where I can represent what I want fairly easily and I’m now looking into techniques and things to elevate my pictures. Hell, even just watching your videos gets me in the mood to paint!! It’s so useful
Wow! I was hooked on your channel when you painted the entrance of a grocery store. Thanks for all the art tips too! Take care 🇨🇦 ❤️
this is beautiful
Another great lesson! I think you are the best! Thank you
Amazing
Outstanding work!
Excelente...que nunca nos falte su arte...
Beautiful
this is so awesome and beautiful ,you have a magic in your hand
Another awesome video, thanks for sharing.
I’m amazed at how you can just throw down a car or a guy at his station in a tire shop with such fearless abandon. It’s amazing to see a master at work.
a wonderfull lessson about light and shadow ,thank you to bring us those concepts with such clarity (no pun)
Adorei a dramaticidade das cores!! Ficou lindíssimo! Gosto muito do jeito sutil que você acrescenta detalhes com apenas algumas pinceladas e estas mesmas pinceladas são muito realistas e seguras! Parabéns!!
Hi James... I think you mentioned this before, but I always go through an "ugly" time in each piece that either makes or breaks the painting. I see you going through that time each time you paint a scene, but in your case you push through it and I think it's because you have the ability to see beyond that "ugly" point to see what the actual painting will look like. Sometimes that point is very frustrating and a lot of times I can't seem to get past it fast enough. I think that may be from lack of practice or maybe it is something else. But I do see that point of time in every piece you do. I think you may have talked about this before, or maybe it was someone else that I watch, not sure. This applies to digital as well as traditional. Thanks again for another informative video.
I'm a car guy, so you got my attention. Very nice effect with the focused light !
This looks great. I like your expressive art style.
wow. Thanks. I follow your videos and have learned alot.
Very inspiring. Very helpful video.
Awesome job. Seriously. I'm going to try this.
great lesson
Beautifully explained! 👌🏾
