+Rln17 Hey Rln17,We're glad you find enjoyment in Steve's videos. One thing for sure, they guy knows his way around a motorcycle. Thanks for watching our videos. You're a subscriber to our channel, right? Ride safe. BB.com
Im subscribed for about a year now :) part of the reason im still riding I owe you to you guys for the good advices and help I got in the tutorials so I big thanks to you guys and keep up the good work sharing videos for the riders.
i used to think it would take me a year to fix the top and bottom end on my own no outside help besides RUclips video's, but i'm learning more and more just by watching these kind of video's. RUclips is my friend :D
I agree djreed. I keep bouncing back an forth between a 250 two stroke and the 450's. I can't decide what I like more. Maybe one day we can afford one of each!
i have a 2011 crf 250r... i bought it used from a dealership for $4700. will i have to worry about a rebuild within the next 2 years? i rise every sunday, and do extensive basic matinence. thanks :)
I know that the compression ring goes on the piston with the manufacturer's stamp or marking facing up, but do the oil rings also have a correct position? The rings I bought from yamaha don't actually have any markings, and I can't seem to feel any sort of sharp edges such as the one for the compression ring. The bike was reassembled with what we thought would be ok, but are waiting to start it just in case. Yamaha and the local shop doesn't open again until monday.
I have a 05 Yamaha YZ450F that will not turn over. It started with a bog/hesitation & pop sounds than shuts off completely. Values checked 100% and are good. Air filter checked and good. Fresh gas & oil, new spark plug, added a new fuel screw, cleaned carb 100%. Far as the top/bottom end is concerned in my opinion I believe they're all good because I don't ride it everyday or every week. I have a rebuild carb kit coming this week which I will install it just in case. Do you all think I'm over looking something that needs attention? Maybe the float is stuck or something like that!
KING TROLL I've been a 2 stroke guy since I was a kid and not long ago I decided to switch over to 4 strokes and give it a try. Since I posted that comment I've had about 5 4 stroke bikes and they all had problems and cost me too much money, for real. Personally, 2 strokes are easy to fix vs 4 strokes. Right now I have a KTM 450 bored over to a 525 but trading it with a guy for a CBR 900rr. However, no more 4 stroke bikes for me. Looking to buy a KX500 and just relax 😁
You done the best video mate. So detailed and clear on the instructions. I never got lost in useless bullshit talk. I'm doing my 2005 rmz 450cc today. Lost compression. I took on hill climbs chasing down a wr450f and the bike started squealing after getting hot. If I upload a 30 sec video could you possibly tell me if I'm on the right track. You seem to know your bikes. I'm thinking piston expansion and done the rings and or dropped a valve
i plan on changing out my piston, do I have to file the ring end gaps with a new piston and rings? Or should they come with the proper clearance? Plan on putting a wiseco piston in my kfx 450 (stock compression ratio)
Hello can you give me some advice please. my bike Yamaha YZ450F threw the oil out from (PIPE BREATHER), I put a new cylinder, pistons and rings and i drive 1 km but it blows out the oil again. I will be grateful if you give me some advice. can it be reason that run without break in the engine?
This video wasn't put up so that people could argue about a 2stroke vs 4stroke...theyre both the shit if you ask me, which nobody did, so I'll keep my other comments that have nothing to do with the video to myself. Great video, well put together and very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
so what was the point in setting TDC when pulling it apart, when the timing is going to go off anyway? its more important to set TDC when putting it together.
Hi,if possible and if your doing any more videos, would you be able to show us how you do a top end on a two stroke? any help appreciated thanks from New Zealand:)
i just rebuild mt wr400, and i got everything all set up, and i kicked it over without the valve cover on and it has no compression like it used to. what could that be?
its mostly user preference. the whole top end doesnt need replacing but once a year or so on a 4 stroke(based on 100 hours riding per year). the valves on the other hand need replacing about every 10-15 hours. the bike will begin to be near impossible to start, you know you have passed your valve adjustment date when that happens.
don't worry you will know...first the bike gets hard to start, so you get the valves adjusted and you keep doing that until the valves can no longer be adjusted or if it explodes for some reason and again...youll know
***** always loved my 2 strokes but i did have to do rebuilds much more often at much less cost and the only reason i switched to 4 was just for the reliability of the xr600 which i quickly discovered isnt your typical under powered honda and is really a snarling beast with plenty of rev and power but what really surprised me was the traction was so much better(and well suited to my exploring riding style) but in the end im on 4 stroke for the fuel economy now because the desert is unforgiving and i need that guaranteed 130 miles so i dont die
***** You're bias. People that harp on 4 strokes are diluted in their thinking. 2 strokes are fast no doubt about it, 4 strokes are also pretty damn stupid when you can ride them. People like what they like for different reasons, but people that shit all over four strokes for no actual reason have been jerking it to Metal mulisha videos far too much.
hey i have a 2005 ttr-125ET and I fried the piston rings, i orderd new ring and put them in and it smoked a lot but now...not so much. Its been about 4-5 months since i put in the rings how long will it take for my bike to stop smoking please and thank you
whats that? i know i forgot to check the oil (and i was out) and fried the rings, but i think the issue was that the guy who ordered the rings got bigger rings than i needed and we worked them down to fit the piston and i think we wore them down a lil to much lol, but if you have any other ideas and how i could fix it im all ears :)
Im looking at a 2009 kx450f and the listing says the top end was recently done.Should i stay away or is it ok to buy bikes like that...BTW he is asking for 3800
Mr.Gixxer Hey Gixxer,The bike you're looking at is 5 years old. Bikes get ridden, and being machines, things wear out, and occasionally need to be replaced. As long as the seller can provide receipts, I see no reason to not buy that bike. No way of telling if $3800 is a good deal, as I don't know what else comes with the bike, component-wise. Exhaust? Suspension? Controls? Lots of variables to consider. Look into other KX's on the market, and make the call. As usual, if a deal seems too good to be true, than it usually is.
i have an 09 kx450f doing a top end, the piston doesnt have the alignment pin for the rings like a 2 stroke, where do the ring gaps need to be positioned
Hello, I am in doubt which brand of 250F will buy, what do you think is the best? which has a higher durability in your engine? Yamaha Suzuki Honda Kawasaki?
Igor Vinicius Too hard to pick just one Igor. They are all so close now in aspects of performance, suspension, etc.. It's going to come down to sitting on each one, and figuring out which one fits you best ergonomically. Or, just pick your favorite color.
Igor Vinicius Hey IgorTrue. Even in 2009, all brands still had carburetors, with 2010 being the first year for FI for Honda, Suzuki, and Kawi. Suspension systems and braking systems were still very close in performance too among all the bikes. It's really a "too close to call" scenario until you do a couple things. 1. Sit on them individually 2. Ride them on your local terrain. Some bikes will feel better either to taller/shorter riders, some better to lighter/ heavier riders, and thus they will all perform slightly different on varied terrains. You really can't go "wrong" with any of them. See if you can borrow certain bikes from friends or locals for a day, and ride them.
Doesn't the cam chain tensioner have to be completely removed and then reset before being reinstalled ? That's what you do with a 2009, maybe the model he's working on doesn't have to be removed and reset?
A good running 250 2t will run with a 450 4t. 450 four strokes do have a bit more tq than a 250. Most mildly modded 250 2 strokes will put down a bit over 30 ft lbs to the tire. A 2012 crf450 makes roughly 38 ft lbs at the flywheel. So it may put down about 33 or 34 to the tire on a good day. A CR500 makes roughly 51 ft lbs and 65 hp at the motor bone stock. I have seen a kx500 dyno at 65 WHEEL hp and 54 ft lbs with exhaust and jetting. I have both of these bikes.
no matter what you say 250 2t is much stronger than 250F. i like both 2t and 4t, its just that a 2stroke is much cheaper to maintain and repair by yourself. that is its great advantage.I agree though, the point is to ride whatever you like and have fun.
SlammedBeretta Hey SB,Always measure ring gap. Always. No reason not to. You're already in the engine. Take your time with a rebuild, and that should extend the interval for when you have to do it again. Rush things or skip steps and you'll have the engine torn down again, sooner than you'd like.
I got a kx250f and white smokes pours out of the over flow on the radiator and I think it is getting over heated but it runs and starts good but could you please help me thank you.
I agree with “eddies2kturbo“ ! I miss thee ol 2 strokes ! If parts pre purchased for complete top and bottom for 2 stroke It could be done in couple hours
if you are just doing casual weekend rides and keep up with basic maintenance (oil change every other ride, oil filter every other oil change, clean the air filter, powerwash. etc..) maybe between 60-80 hour. its hard to say because i dont know how you ride and how you take care of your bike or even what type of bike you have! 2 stroke you will have to do it in half the time but its so much cheaper..
It doesn't matter how many hours the motor has.... What you need to know is if he properly did the maintenance... I've had my 01 raptor for 6 years and NEVER did a top end rebuild and I beat the shit out of it and the compression is the exact same as factory. Change the oil often, clean the damn airbox, and don't hit the rev limiter all day and you will be good to go. You aren't racing it so you are not going to notice even the slightest change. If it's blowing smoke then there's a problem...
hahaha 2strokes will always be the heart of motocross sorry to say i used to have a "hard hitty 4t" myself but i hated it so i sold it for a 2t. the sound dosent matter to me. its about the power and how the rider rides it. :)
Yep Nice video, but when you installed the chain guide back in first you put it in correctly and camera cuts out .. then you put it in upside down. that may not be a good thing for people wanting to wonder HOW TO….
I own an 06 YZ450F, I've had to have valves checked only once, I also own a 350 Banshee which needs a rebuild everytime I drive the fucker. Dont even get me started on bullshit mixing fuel either.
i actualy like the lack of engine breaking myself. on all terrain, especialy in racing. (call me crazy) i agree with you about the pipe. and pipe protectors dont seem to help much... my buddies who ride there 450s hard, spend more in matanance than me, and we are at the same level in the woods. i get super awsome bottom out of mine, and you can always gear it down. the way bike technology is now, its still all about preferance, in 10 years or maybe even 5, it wont be...
Finally, someone who didn't reply saying "no fuck you 4stroke will always be the best, thats why the pro's ride them". so thank you for your reply, i totally agree with you for the 4stroke in enduro situations, i actually have a crf450 for enduro riding. but for just messing around on the track i prefer my yz250. We all have opinions so everyone just shut up, get out there and ride :)
@SuWoopSitdown you are right. You can get over 100 hours riding hard on a 4stroke piston and rings. The engine braking makes it much easier to ride than a 2 stroke. they are all around better, sorry 2 smokers but he's right and it is true.
Why would you say its a better choice on the trails? I had a lot of problem dinging expansion pipes, lack of engine brake and lack of bottom end torque. I now ride a 2011 RMX450, EFI. Thing is a lot better on trails, and cheaper on maintenance. Yep, cheaper on maintenance.
+Joneses Ente top dead center(TDC) means that the piston is at the highest point of the stroke in the cylinder. So all the way up as far as it will go before it comes back down.
TDC is top dead center, BUT, there is TWO top dead centers. This is a four stroke, so there is a TDC on the exhaust stroke and one on the compression stroke. Most of the time TDC refers to it being on the compression stroke. If the cams and chain is out, TDC is TDC for the crank, but add in the cams etc it matters which stroke you are on.
You have to remove one of the cams to get the chain around them, you won't be able to wrap them around. You need to remove the exhaust cam anyways to set the timing. Whatever you do, don't try forcing it on, big trouble, little china.
Not sure why video makers insist on showing the disassembly of things without showing the reassembly of it. It would have been nice to see you tighten the chain especially considering the tensioner tends to bring timing off a tooth
umm i tryed a 4stroke i tryed my bros 2012 kx450f i hated it, i did not like it as much as my smoker. it was not as fun nor fast it made me feel lazy but ,with my 2stroke it makes me feel goood it makes me a better rider. :)
4strokes are good but 2strokes are much more reliable, powerful and a lot simpler. they only have 3 moving parts in the engine, which means there is less to go wrong.
I dropped my timing chain in there and it took almost 20 min to get it back up, so people dont drop your timing chain like this guy does, hes a pro and is better and getting it back up to the head than me, i can rebuild stuff and i know what im doing but, its better if a pro does it
i dont get it? your saying that 2 strokes aren't cheap because its 95$ to rebuild? 95$ for a rebuild is CHEAP. just got new cams for my kawa 450 cost me 300..something a 2 stroke doesnt even have
if u look at it scientifically a 4 stroke mx engine vs 2 stroke mx engine 2 stroke is a superior design in manyt ways and yes it does have a few weaknesses compared to 4 strokes but nothing that cant be improved on as 2 strokes have not had serious money put in to research and improvement since late 80's in theory we could have had 2 strokes that are torquey low down and dont have a narrow power band and develop a lot more power along with reduced emisions and improved fuel economy
Skye Walker Not much to do here Luke, but if by the random chance that you can see it, and perhaps sneak a magnetic rod down there, well you might be able to avoid taking things all apart, and hopefully not so far apart that you need to crack the cases. Not a good prognosis.May the force be with you.
At 6:07 something hit the floor when pulling head off lol 4 strokes scare me lol ( lack of knowledge and training causes that fear ) I would rather pay you to Go through my motor 😁
why would i be joking.... im just messing with you, people usually rebuild them every year to 4 years. depends how hard you ride it and how much. My dad hasn't rebuilt his and he got his in 2007 because he doesn't ride hard and takes really good care of his bike.
I always enjoy Steve Matthes tutorials his videos have been a life saver for me on my ktm 450

how long does this process take a seasoned mechanic?
is there a certain way you should tension the cam chain? or just put the tension-er in and that sit
Did you just put the cylinder back on without honing to break the glaze?

its mostly user preference. the whole top end doesnt need replacing but once a year or so on a 4 stroke(based on 100 hours riding per year). the valves on the other hand need replacing about every 10-15 hours. the bike will begin to be near impossible to start, you know you have passed your valve adjustment date when that happens.

Smoking means oil is passing through the rings. Most likely is you put them in upside down or did incorrect ring gapping.

Are you using coolant?
Did you change your radiator cap.?Simple fix. The pressure on the stock cap can't hold anymore. Get a 1.4 or 1.6 cap. Stocks are 1.1. Hope that helps
I agree with “eddies2kturbo“ !
I miss thee ol 2 strokes !

It could be done in couple hours
Good video, but when you put the chain guide back in, you put it in upside down. Might throw a lot of people off. Just heads up
i feel like the man video taping was more involved with video taping your face rather then the engine and what you were doing

(call me crazy) i agree with you about the pipe. and pipe protectors dont seem to help much... my buddies who ride there 450s hard, spend more in matanance than me, and we are at the same level in the woods. i get super awsome bottom out of mine, and you can always gear it down. the way bike technology is now, its still all about preferance, in 10 years or maybe even 5, it wont be...
best comment ive ever seen on youtube congrats! braaaappppp
Good job And thanks for posting you really help me out
@SuWoopSitdown you are right. You can get over 100 hours riding hard on a 4stroke piston and rings. The engine braking makes it much easier to ride than a 2 stroke. they are all around better, sorry 2 smokers but he's right and it is true.
this happend to my engine can some1 explian ?
Can somebody please tell me if this is going to be the exactly the same on an 07 kx250f
more aggresive? dont think so, my 07 cr250 with pro circuit exhaust sounds pretty mean man. its ear peircing up close
Didn't see you tighten the cam tensioner when turned it over
top dead end..? meaning the rod/piston must be upright position right?
+Joneses Ente top dead center(TDC) means that the piston is at the highest point of the stroke in the cylinder. So all the way up as far as it will go before it comes back down.
TDC is top dead center, BUT, there is TWO top dead centers. This is a four stroke, so there is a TDC on the exhaust stroke and one on the compression stroke. Most of the time TDC refers to it being on the compression stroke. If the cams and chain is out, TDC is TDC for the crank, but add in the cams etc it matters which stroke you are on.
What if my cam chain is too tight to get the cams back on ?
You have to remove one of the cams to get the chain around them, you won't be able to wrap them around. You need to remove the exhaust cam anyways to set the timing. Whatever you do, don't try forcing it on, big trouble, little china.
Does anybody know how much is it for a topend??
15:30 nailpolish is a good thing to mark the chain with. :D
only thing i like about 2 strokes is the powerband.. other than that.. I like them both..
Not sure why video makers insist on showing the disassembly of things without showing the reassembly of it. It would have been nice to see you tighten the chain especially considering the tensioner tends to bring timing off a tooth
Hello.
I blow a valve on my 250 kawasaki i change the valve but it sims to shot compression back into carburetor
+Senor Diaz . Check your timing.
great vids you have !!!
Use a rubber mallet or something wood to tape on stuff or just use your hand to knock stuff free
umm i tryed a 4stroke i tryed my bros 2012 kx450f i hated it, i did not like it as much as my smoker. it was not as fun nor fast it made me feel lazy but ,with my 2stroke it makes me feel goood it makes me a better rider. :)
Whats the name of this song ?
4strokes are good but 2strokes are much more reliable, powerful and a lot simpler. they only have 3 moving parts in the engine, which means there is less to go wrong.
Hay man forgot to say set the tension on the cam chain before turning it over to check ya marks or would be false reading or possibly jump tooth.
4 stroke when I wanna mow the grass and 2 stroke when I wanna go fast.
4-stroke to go fast.. 2-stroke to come last.
I dropped my timing chain in there and it took almost 20 min to get it back up, so people dont drop your timing chain like this guy does, hes a pro and is better and getting it back up to the head than me, i can rebuild stuff and i know what im doing but, its better if a pro does it
The tension is off the chain here.
dude u are awsome
RUFFLY HOW OFTEN DO YOU THINK
i dont get it? your saying that 2 strokes aren't cheap because its 95$ to rebuild? 95$ for a rebuild is CHEAP. just got new cams for my kawa 450 cost me 300..something a 2 stroke doesnt even have
i love this guy
if u look at it scientifically a 4 stroke mx engine vs 2 stroke mx engine 2 stroke is a superior design in manyt ways and yes it does have a few weaknesses compared to 4 strokes but nothing that cant be improved on as 2 strokes have not had serious money put in to research and improvement since late 80's in theory we could have had 2 strokes that are torquey low down and dont have a narrow power band and develop a lot more power along with reduced emisions and improved fuel economy
2smoker4ever! i admit that it is more expensive to keep 2t but ahh driving whit 2t it is fking amazing..
please help.. i droped the litte cross peices down into the motor.
Skye Walker Not much to do here Luke, but if by the random chance that you can see it, and perhaps sneak a magnetic rod down there, well you might be able to avoid taking things all apart, and hopefully not so far apart that you need to crack the cases. Not a good prognosis.May the force be with you.
And if you remove the flywheel to replace the cam chain, you are gonna half to drain the oil.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU HAVE TO DO THIS PLEASE REPLY
why are 2 stroke people watching four stroke videos??? Four stroke For life BBBRAAPPPP
I got a KX450f and my piston don’t go all the way up
Probably time to have someone take a look at it who has some more experience
@@bikebandit never mind it go all the way up and lol
At 6:07 something hit the floor when pulling head off lol
4 strokes scare me lol ( lack of knowledge and training causes that fear )
I would rather pay you to
Go through my motor 😁
clean bike
why would i be joking.... im just messing with you, people usually rebuild them every year to 4 years. depends how hard you ride it and how much. My dad hasn't rebuilt his and he got his in 2007 because he doesn't ride hard and takes really good care of his bike.
My 07 KTM 144 SX is on its first rebuild now haha.
Love the smooth power of these the new four strokes, but man, what a bitch to work on!!!
haha.. 6:52.. slowly take it out.. "boom"(punch it).. lol at that one :P
2 stroke all the way
four strokes are the most reliable, but if something is wrong, its the worst to mantain... :P
aint it just much easyer to take out the engein?
