Cities, what are you named after? Philadelphia: I am named "City of Brotherly Love" in Latin, reflecting Enlightenment-era ideals and the spirit of uplifting your fellow man. Chicago: I am named after...uh...a stinky plant. In all seriousness I love Chicago's name origin, and I'd be curious to smell and taste this plant at some point.
Jamestown was named after King James I, Charleston after Charles II, and Georgia after George II. I'm not so sure about Philadelphia being an enlightenment name though, considering that that there was an ancient greek settlement by the same name, although maybe its an example of enlighnment reference to classical culture.
Ramps are everywhere in the woods in spring. They are rather prolific where they grow and some places, West Virginia comes to mind, have festivals celebrating the ramp.
I never knew this about the name of Chicago. Your channel teaches me so much about the city. Thank you! One of your most loyal subscribers, don't know why it took me so long to get to view this video.
How wonderful! I'm Californian, and I didn't know we have ramps in the US. I thought they were a British/European plant. I've never seen them, and have always wanted to try them. What a shame they're endangered. I hope they don't disappear, and can make a comeback. Thank you for being discreet.❤
Hi Jack. If you are still in Chicago I have some 16mm films that I would like to transfer to digital format. Do you know anyplace that can do this? Thanks.
@@ChicagoAussie I actually had to ask her- Apparently, they were growing all over my parents' yard when they moved to what would be my childhood home (1980s). Ma just made sure to replant and cultivate a big patch of them.
Ramps aren't worth it, people should be trying to naturalize Ramsons/Allium Ursinum in North America, they're related to Ramps but much quicker and easier to grow
I've Met The Real Seana & Ferris. They were at The New Amsterdam Theatre in New York. R U Ferris? 'cause You've Grown up alot since March 1984. PS. My Girlfriend and Sister Might want to Party with You This New Year's Eve. Be Thou Ferris or Not. I'd Like Us to Meet at Madame Toussaud's Manhattan. Double PS Stay Lenovo!
@@ChicagoAussie first off I didn't expect you to respond so thank you for that, second of your accent is extremely pleasing and third LOL. I'm not a vegetarian but come on we need to cut down on slaughterhouses.
So your not going too tell us were you are a, well I know were you are, your one block north of City Hall! The stench from city hall is so bad I can smell it in Des Plaines. Aussie, your going to have to work much harder hiding your location because every Chicagoan knows when they smell something fishy, they know its not coming from the lake, its from city hall! Lol Thanks for the video AU!
Are you still there? Miss your videos.
How can this Aussie teach me so much about my city??!! lol...thanks

Detroit is French for strait or water passage.
Rochester is named after its founder and first industrialist.
Las Vegas is named The Meadows. Which is a little inaccurate...

So Chicago is named after a smelly plant, which turned out to be accurate because Chicago's basically a smelly industrial plant LOL!
Chicago smells like weed now all over .
