I got the 2019 XLE AWD red with Almond interior 3 months ago. good ride. 11235 miles now. with about 7000 miles a year. I will be rolling for at least 12 years
I have a 2016 Highlander Limited and the Captain chairs were a must (two kids here as well). The platinum looks amazing. If I didnt plan to have my current Highlander for another 5 years, I would definitely want this new one. Another win for Toyota

I bought the 2020 XLE AWD model about a month ago and I love it. Leg room in the second row is one of the reasons I bought it. I upgraded from the 2018 XLE and I don’t regret it one bit.

I would buy the Hybrid Highlander. I owned a 2014 Highlander and it was one of the nicest vehicles I have ever owned. Reliability is terrific as you know.

We have a 2018 and it’s the best vehicle we have owned in this category. The leg room in the back and and comfort is excellent. As long as you can use the iPad entertainment idea, this is the best choice in SUV’s. Our back seat is 60/40 but I like the captains seat much better. Anyway, it’s got the power but the comfort is what it’s all about. No brainer.... just get it.
Childrens should not be on Ipads at all. It damages their development.
Hi Dave, you can’t go wrong with Toyota. Consumer Reports gives the Highlander high marks. Plus, it’s one of the most kept vehicles that consumers hold on to the longest. Enough said.

My 2003 Highlander has180,000 miles. Lks and drives like new.
In my personal experience Toyota quality has gone downhill. My 2015 Sienna was leaking oil from the timing chain cover, had a failed blind spot monitoring system and needed a wheel bearing all before 75k mi. Thank God I bought the extended warranty. Now it's out of warranty with 90k mi and just started another mysterious oil leak. I think I'm over Toyota.

Dave, if you haven't made a decision by now, I would say just get a 2020 Platinum. You can't go wrong with it. It is a very reliable vehicle, you will be getting all the latest features with this new generation, and it can hold up for a very long time. I would also say that if you plan on doing any towing, or you want it to perform its best in snow conditions, you DEFINITELY want to get the V6 version. Towing is weak on the hybrid. Also, the the V6 is going to perform better for snow and / or off-road situations. An important note on this too is that if you get the hybrid version, you are stuck with a CVT transmission. While they have been improving, they are notorious for having problems, and when the start to have problems, the only way to fix them most of time is to completely replace them, and a new CVT can easily hit $6K! To make matters worse, is that if / when you are dealing with challenging situations in snow and / or off-road, and the tires pulse between spinning and grabbing, it puts the CVT under a lot of stress.
Moreover, since the V6 gets good gas mileage already, and the there isn't a huge difference of mileage between the hybrid and the V6, the savings in gas is not going to offset the cost increases of the hybrid, especially if you plan on keeping it, and blowing past 80K - 100K mileage and have to start replacing costly hybrid batteries, electronic differentials, as well as replacing a CVT. Per 17 gallon tank of gas, the hybrid gets between 80 to 85 miles more than the V6. If for example, you were to drive 1 tank of gas every single week for a year, and the gas price was $2.75 per gallon, the V6 is going to cost you about $400 per year more. The higher price of the hybrid (and financing), as going to blow any gas cost differences of the V6 right out of the water. In then end, with the V6 along with the really tough and reliable 8-AT transmission, you are going pay a lot less for the car, less in financing, eliminate the risk of replacement hybrid parts (which are breathtakingly expensive), AND get much better performance. Go with the V6 8-AT and the AWD.

GET IT !! this thing is beautiful..You can't go wrong, Luxury, off road ability, strong, beautiful design inside/outside, not bad fuel economy, loaded features, great engine, the car is not too big and not too small perfect for a family. I would get this in a dime. Good luck.
Buy it ASAP Toyota last 300,000 miles most people own Toyota never changes their oil. The Highlander is a reliable car at first wasn't fond of the 2020 style now grown on me I would buy that over a Explorer or Grand Cherokee.

Eden Roth True, but TGMO and M1 are pretty robust. In easy mostly highway duty the oil is good for 15k. Toyota recommends changes every 10k mile or once a year which is conservative.
I agree with you, but what do you think about Period change instead of Mileage change? Dealer suggests people to change their oil every 6 months though the mileage isn't reached.
The looks have grown on me too, except that I wouldn't complain if it didn't have that silly "S" curve on the sides.

Drove one yesterday, pretty nice vehicle but sadly its just too small. Wish they made it the size of the Honda Pilot. With 3 kids the Sienna is still the way to go. The highlander still has what I call an emergency third row seat.
Not a CVT, comes with AWD, pretty good powertrain, seating up to 8, available with captains chairs, has carplay, it's reliable. I could go on... can't blame your wife with her opinion on this SUV. it's amazing!
Harsh...It really is great! Only area where it fall down against some others is space. Some people actually want the third row to be usable.

I currently own 2 Bimmers and I tend to lean towards luxury vehicles myself. So I won't necessarily look at a Toyota, I'd be looking at Lexus instead.
But coming from me, Telluride or Palisade (Palisade would actually be my choice) all day brother.
I am a Toyota man, the Kia ? Hyundai look great but the minimal savings will be out weighted by the reliability / resale value.
We just purchased the Hyundai Palisade Ultimate with White on White and love 💗 it. My Mother In Law owns a BMW X5 and was really expressed with the interior and options. Happy with our New Ride 👍😎🍻. Cheers

I really like it.. the price is just a bit high and rarely any decent deals on them. Even used these things hold their values so well that they are in the mid 20s-30s for not the greatest mileage on odometer .. I know I would benefit from that resale eventually as well.. just hard stomach it.

Robert Hatcher , they’re very reliable. Giving one the peace of mind to just get on it and go anywhere and. have a sense of security that the car won’t break down. One thing they are not is being like a tank though. The paint , and body has always been cheap and low quality

If you really need 3 rows for adults in that price point, get a minivan. If you want to go up in price, get a full size SUV.

I'M SURE THE HIGHLANDER DOES 0-60 BETWEEN 6.5-7.5 SECONDS....WHICH IS QUICKER THAN MANY "SPORTY CARS" JUST 10-15 YEARS AGO.

Do you guys have kids? I looked at all the 3 rows. I have 4 boys, my oldest (a Sr) is 6"3 and my youngest is 5"4. The oldest couldn't even get in the middle row nor the youngest in the 3rd comfortably on the Highlander. We traded our Yukon XL in for a Palisade Limited and couldn't be happier.
If not for the Korean twins, this would be the best in class. Really nice remake by Toyota! Nicer than the current Lexus!

I bought mine sight unseen no test drive. It drives a little better than the previous generation I think because of new platform. Same power train . I love mine . All I will buy is Toyota maybe a Lexus . But they better get another V6 I’m not buying a turbo 4 in a big vehicle, I don’t care for turbo vehicles at all honestly.
My Sorento 2019 SXL has pretty much everything this Toyota has. If you buy a 2018 Sorento you will pay “HALF” the amount of a Toyota and get all the equipment you can think of. It also has a great warranty.

I'd argue that-less so the 0-60mph test specifically-horsepower and torque are important for freeway on-ramps. More acceleration ability allows a driver to get themselves out of situations that slow vehicles cannot. I have had to suddenly pass a vehicle on a highway and having the power to do that was helpful. This is especially important when passing tractors or other farm vehicles on smaller side roads. "How quickly can I get around this thing" is always a consideration.
I considered this one, I also have two kids and I chose the 2020 Ford Explorer XLT I absolutely love it. It has everything I need tows 5300 or 5500lbs, Apple Car Play ( and android), it also has the captain chairs for the second row, AWD with I think 6 different terrain settings, remote start (huge for me) 10 speed, base engine has 300HP and 310 for torque, you can even have 4GLTE with wifi for only $20 a month ( also huge for my kids they love the iPads with games), i absolutely love how it drives and accelerate, and so much more I could honestly go on. I don't know if you have had an honest look at the SUV for your family. Good luck if you see this and nowadays you can't go wrong on the choices out there.
Ford Explorer is pretty good in features but ford hasn’t had the best track record for reliability recently
I have a 1999 Explorer with 289,000 miles on it. I really wanted to get this new Explorer but the 2020 had at least 10 recalls and the cheap interior turned me off. I love the HP in the new Explorer and the rear wheel drive.. I am still looking at many SUVs still.
@@JM-gt6dy yea I totally understand. The way I see it is I rather a company recall and fix any issues than never fix known issues. I’ve done my 2 recalls on my 2020 just know not all recall are for all cars

Hey Dave, my opinion on buying new vs used. In short, it really depends on the vehicle and how picky one is. If you want “like new” with some savings in this case and don’t mind the wait, get it as a CPO when it’s 2-3 yrs old and still under Toyota’s initial warranty period. Toyota SUV’s hold their value so well but at least you get the initial depreciation knocked off. If it’s only 1 model yr old, you may as well get a new one, most dealers will sell at a couple hundred over invoice minus incentives or rebates. In my previous life I was a dealership sales manager, finance manager and worked for Toyota as well. Just my 2 cents but I would definitely choose the new generation over the old and even consider XSE hybrid and save a few bucks.
If you keep your cars long enough like I do (minimum ten years), depreciation shouldn't be a big consideration when purchasing a reliable car and one which holds its resale value well. My last new car lasted 15 years (467K miles) and I got my money's worth and then some. For some reason the previous model I think had better looks albeit with an outdated infotainment system with a bit of a body roll around bends. I'm looking to get a 2019 Highlander XLE model with under 20K miles for a nice discounted price.

@@adilrao Wasn't a surprise to me because I never missed a single scheduled maintenance service up to the last recommended by the manufacturer done at 283K. They told me that if I kept up with the scheduled service there was no reason it wouldn't clock 300K miles. The reason a lot of cars rarely reach that high mileage is because owners stop following the recommended scheduled service once the vehicle is out of warranty.
We have a DVD system in our Tahoe with individual screens behind the driver and front passenger headrests. So our two kids don’t have to share. Yet they still prefer to use their devices to watch Netflix, RUclips etc rather then watch a limited list of movies on thier dvd system screen.

Not 3 years for a toyota, get the 2020 used in 6 months. 50k will be dropped to about 38-39k with 10k miles. I would hold off and save that 10k!
Well Dave, Toyota magic at work again! New features, new styling and that top of the line trim makes the Highlander very tough to resist. Seems to me that in today's car market $50k is the new $40k. If you can handle the depreciation I say go for a 2020 Highlander .
You could also get an XT6 for about $52,000 or an Ford Edge for $31,000 or an explorer for $33,000. Obviously when you throw in extras you can upscale luxury.
I would love it if you could put both (since you have two kids) car seats in the vehicle and show us the fit of the car seat within the vehicle! That would cater more towards moms.
I’m currently on my third 4Runner Limited and trying to hold out for the new one but the new Highlander Hybrid w/ 36/35mpg is pretty tempting.
Echo9 * i had a 4runner too. Unless you really need the off road capabilities the Highlander is a sweet ride.
I feel the opposite, we have 2 small kids now and the bench is great for my wife or my mother in law to sit in and attend them. Also... my dog sits there.
The third-row room is not great. I would consider Kia Telluride with Captain's chairs AND real room for the third row. As a current owner of a 2013 Prius V, and after a 2001 Avalon, Toyota quality is not what it used to be.
The Quality on my 2020 RAV4 Trail seems great to me,much better than the 2001 Corolla I used for winter & above par compared to my Lexus CT200h.
The 0 to 60 acceleration time does have value to demonstrate the vehicle's ability to pull into busy moving traffic and accelerate to match the traffic speed.

The Highlander is a great SUV, but they keep making it bigger and forcing the 3-row. I wish I could get 2-row only to keep that back open for cargo. I totally agree about the drop down screen. They are useless in the age of iPad and streaming.
I'd suggest parking a Telluride SXP next to the Highlander for your wife to compare one more time before making your decision. (The Highlander is a great choice; as long as you don't compare it to the Korean twins.)

Consider the XLE with leather upgrade and captain seats in the middle row.
You'll save about $7000 plus resale will hold better value over all the other upgraded models 😉👍.
My 2010 Buick Enclave has captain chairs in back. Wouldn’t even consider any other car without it since it makes it easy to walk thru to the third row.
We have an 06 and still rides nice, paint faded an all, it has yet to disappoint me when going to buy furniture or to the hardware store. It seems to fit just about anything we buy. Maybe Sheetrock and 10’ wood is the limit.
Hey Dave, great stuff! Quick question, did you notice any kind of "jerkiness" or anything unusual with that 8-speed automatic? I'm seriously considering getting one of these, but I've been hearing about this as a potential issue. Trying to see if they might be more of "one-off" scenarios. Keep up the great work, man!!
Would've liked to gotten driving thoughts - cabin noise at highway speeds, acceleration while merging, miles per gallon achieved. Those short test drives don't give us much room for examination

Toyota and Lexus guy with a corolla, 2 IS250s and a Sienna. I really like the minivan-ness of the new highlander but don't care for the dark brown interior. Dark gray or black might be a more attractive combination

You mentioned an Airstream; no matter what you use to tow, it’s not a good idea to tow/haul the maximum load. Make your wife happy and maybe be smart about towing (do some research if you are a beginner)

Looked at the Toyota Highlander and the Kia Telluride. Got the Kia Telluride. We just liked it better. Got the Black Copper and Dune Brown Nappa seats.

Over $51k is a bit high, for any vehicle. Get a tandem bicycle and attach a baby carriage behind it.
Great video, would have liked cabin noise and audio system thoughts as well considering it is a platinum trim (how does best they have to offer compare type of comment). I also went for the captains chairs in my vehicle but noticed the Highlander’s space between them was considerably smaller than my Expedition. Great reasons for having two seats instead of a bench, and one of mine is a pass thru for kids or adult reaching to assist a kid in the back. Long way of saying measuring the space between captains chairs would be cool.
Lastly... guns don’t go “boop.” ;)

0-60 times actually do matter even in family haulers. Some areas of town (at least where I stay) there are metered ramps. The effectiveness of the meter is junk and as soon as it turns green you literally have to floor it to beat traffic and get on the highway. Back in the day my first cars 0-60 time was like 18-20 seconds. I could not safely merge on the highway when there was traffic. Literally impossible. Even without a metered ramp, some highway on ramps are taken from dead stops on hills, you'll need as much power and speed as possible in those cases.
matered ramp is a very stupid idea which I hate the most. New Highway build nowaday gives enough room for car that doesn't do 0-60 in 5 sec to get enough speed to merge into a slow lane. BTW 0-60 in 4 or 5 sec does not matter anymore other than just an enjoyment of people who love vroom vroom their car or Tesla people, most cars out there can do 0-60 in 6 to 8sec which is very fair.
Markus B When the ramp is metered traffic is going slow. A slow car at 50% throttle will require braking to merge in most of the time. By the way I had no trouble merging into 80 mph traffic with a slow moving truck and I wasn’t even pushing it that hard. It just takes a little technique.

I have the ‘18 xle which I got for $37.5k. approaching the $45k mark, I would definitely go a notch above and get an Acura, infinity or for a little extra an audi. all have options for captains chair. wife loves it as it is very response and easy to drive. don’t know about the 2020 though. if u worried about price, I would maybe go for limited plus $1000 for the 12 inch screen. at $50k look somewhere else imo

Why they use such thin metal sheets for Toyota products? You can bend the door panel with your index finger, and when you close the door it sounds like drum with echo. I went to dealership to buy a highlander and for the same reason I changed my mind.
I really don't care for Toyota's style (inside & out) but the engine is reliable!

I have 2020 highlander XLE, I really like my suv but my only issue is wind and tire noise which is irritating, does anyone know how to fix it?
I would get a new 2020 Highlander because you will get the latest features and tech and do you really want to wait for a used one and I think the rear sun shades come on XLE and up
Why not lease? We did, then you can buy in two/ three years if nothing else blows your skirt up.
Rear window on hatch doesn't open like 2019. What do you think? Do you wish it did open? Would you use the cargo area more often if it did open? I'm trying to make my decision --- used 2019 with the rear hatch window that opens or 2020 with apple carplay/android auto.
What Happened is Customers were asking for a faster lift gate. The lift gate operates 3 seconds faster on the new model. In order to facilitate that, Toyota eliminates the opening Rear glass on the liftgate which saved the weight that they needed in order to make the liftgate operate quicker. Now I did not have the previous generation Highlander but I did once on own an SUV That had the separate glass opening on the liftgate and I didn’t use it very much and I would use it even less now to be honest. We had a 2005 Toyota sienna which did not have the opening glass either and I really didn’t miss it and the Highlander’s liftgate is so fast now that I don’t think we will miss it

I have always loved the Highlander. Do you know if they are going to have a Hybrid model? I may have missed that in the video.
They do Mr. H. 35 mpg on average city/highway. A compelling option, but you don't get torque vectoring with the hybrid. However, the e-AWD has improved in this generation. The engine is a 2.5 liter CVT, which mates well to the hybrid versus your typical CVT. There is more engine noise during acceleration but no big deal after that, 243 HP which is down from the previous generation, but they needed a smaller more efficient engine to get the higher MPGs. My money would go for the platinum hybrid version. All the bells and whistles plus big savings at the gas pump and extended driving range.

Palisade is much nicer, but people are more brand driven. I have no doubt that the Highlander is solid and will have best in class resale value, but the Telluride/Palisade is superior. However, they can’t compete with the Toyota’s reputation of high quality, even though current Toyota is nothing like it use to be. The Highlander is was pretty disappointing. My Dad bought the 3 generations of the Highlander, and after the last one, he was disappointed with the decline of quality. After 50 years of buying only Toyota products, he bought a Palisade Limited, after test driving the new 2020 Highlander. He said that there’s no comparison. The Palisade felt like a premium product. I have a Telluride, given to me as a company car and I’m very impressed. When I personally test drove a 2020 Highlander, I was surprised how horribly cheap looking they appear in the lower trim levels. They look fine in Platinum trim, but looked very cheap in the lower levels. I also like that Hyundai is very hungry, like Toyota use to be. They recruited 28 of the best designers and engineers from the German competition. You can see it and feel it when you drive the new product. Look at the Lexus 2021 IS350. It’s a cost cutting joke. However, when I recommend a midsize Crossover, it’s always the Toyota, because no matter how good a product is, people are attached to brand names and what people will think of them. People always say, hey Carlos, we always saw you as the CarGuru, but you’re driving a Kia? I tell them I buy what I like and I like the quality direction Genesis/Hyundai/Kia has been going. I tell them that the 2021 Genesis GV80 took Toyota by surprise, that they delayed the redesign of the RX , based on the Highlander 3 years to 2023. Toyota realized the RX they originally planned was not even on the Palisade level. They are putting some more things back on that they off on the table for higher margins. Competition is good because it keeps on your best and on your toes. Current Hyundai is the best thing that happened to Toyota customers. It’s forcing Toyota to no longer rest on their laurels. Toyota keeping a close eye on Hyundai speaks volumes on how good they have gotten.

$50K and you still have a stick to hold up the Hood! Come on Toyota. My 2008 41K Highlander also has a stick. Oh well. Bite the bullet and get the Palisade or Telluride. Don't worry about the badge. My Genesis is top notch. It has its own special badge. I have had 6 Toyotas but there an now other choices out there.
You will pay extra for it.

Just drove loaded 2020 Platinum with 8k miles and lots of cheap plastics in interior with lots of rattling. It a NO for me
I own a 2021 platinum which is the same thing and there are in no way lots of cheap plastics in the interior. This is what you get now for 50,000 and the interior is better than the top trim enclave it’s better than the top trim explorer it’s better than the top trim Honda. It’s not going to have an Audi interior at this price
