One of my ancestors was in Monmouth's army. He and his brother were condemned to death. Their Father was wealthy and offered the King money to release his sons. The King allowed only one son to be pardoned, leaving the Father to choose. Fortunately for me, I'm related to the chosen son.

The Pole family had two of the most gruesome botch jobs. The Duke of Suffolk in 1450 was executed by having his neck sawed through by what was described as a rusty sword. Around 75 years or so later, the Countess of Salisbury, herself the daughter of someone who had been executed by drowning in a wine barrel, was, per one account, chased around her cell by a swordsman who kept swinging away but scored few clean hits.
Small wonder Henry VIII imported a French swordsman to execute Ann Boleyn.
