Todays review just solidifies my decision to stop buying any of the Spot whiskies. With the enormous increase in price in the last year or so it's just not worth it anymore.
Great as always. I have found the same drying, slightly tannic note on some of the Green Spot, special edition, wine-cask finishes. Not a deal-breaker tho.
I made the decision to stop buying Irish new releases. I have a couple staples that I will probably always have and to be honest Irish favors non whisky/casual drinkers. But the massive increase in prices have turned me off. Yellow spot is $150…stupid.
I noticed the Red Spot at TW now running $200. Not interested in owning a bottle of it anymore. Maybe one day I'll "spot" it at a bar and get a pour. Ralfy rated the Blue Spot poorly also. Overall I don't find Irish whiskey's reputation very appealing. Powers Lane or Redbreast or nothing.
I was disappointed with last year’s G Spot at around $100. The age statement is higher this year, but at $300, I’m likely a pass. The Spots have become the part of the line where Pernod Ricard is profit taking while the value is remaining in the Redbreast and Powers line. It is absurd to pay $300 for Blue Spot when Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is sitting at $120. Blue Spot is the best of the lineup, but too expensive. I don’t like red spot. Yellow spot is good, but not worth $150, leaving the green spot as the only one in the line close to worth the price. Skip them all and go Redbreast or Powers.
I always say: stay away from wine finish products (other than fortified wine). Get a lot of wine tannins and bitterness. My guess : its easier and cheaper for distillers to use ex wine cask since good mature casks are becoming scarce. They are doing it in spite, they have no other choice. Good casks are rare... For me its becoming a problem. Too much wine finish product on the market and they sell them like premium offer... End of an era?!
Thought the 9 year GS was good but overpriced at 150. Red Spot was very good but very overpriced at just under 200. My favorite has been the Blue at 90.

That is a low score for a whiskey that is going to run around $200 in my area. Glad that I got a couple of 9 year Gold Spots.
