Funnily enough, I looked up the sound effects for Squiffy Ghast as I was editing this since the Violinist looks way too similar to him. Didn't notice anything special though
Fun fact, Squiffy Ghast's Maddening Shanty will always target Jester if one is present on your team. So the two end up getting into a music duel of sorts, with Jester countering Ghast's attacks with Inspiring Tune and Battle Ballad. Music of The Night is probably a throwback to that mechanic from DD1.

I think that the old man is actually a demon of some kind. He teaches you a melody no one is able to surpass, but in the end you go mad and sacrifice your ability to play. However, is squiffy ghast connected to the violinist and how?
I'm pretty sure at the very least Jester and Squiffy Ghast are connected. Ghast has unique behaviour out of every enemy in the game where he'll prioritize targeting Jester if he's in your group (and you also get an achievement for killing Ghast with Jester). You could argue what it's just them seeing each other as competition, but it has to be deeper than that.
Perhaps the Squiffy Ghast is simply what happens to those who've embraced the Demoniac Melody. Performing the song eternally, driving others to madness while indulging themselves. The Ghast possibly recognizes the Jester as having played the melody, somehow, and is compelled to challenge him. Thinking on it, the Squiffy Ghast is pretty unique among the champion enemies, since it doesn't have much to do with it's regions nasties. It's just an undead pirate, maybe related to the Sunken Crew? Just wandering the Cove, playing it's tunes. Makes you think.

I never knew the jester's story, if it was in the comics i never read them, so finding out that he was like crazy gifted and went crazy after getting bullied, murdered people and then mutilated his hands...woof.
If you brought the Jester to the cove in DD1, you'd notice that the squiffy ghasts (undead violin players) would focus him and only him. What's more, the ghasts would sit atop a barrel while playing their music, just like how the man in Jester's shrine does. It makes you wonder if perhaps jester draws people with musical talent to put his skills to the test

Honestly, I'm still conflicted about which is better. I guess ultimately it depends on the person. I think the appeal for the first one is better pacing while the second's appeal is as you said: more powerful and much more connected. In any case, I'm glad I decided to post both versions instead

Different time = different song, that's why you can't compare them. Try to trim that "cooldown" sound from the end of each riff in the first variant, sync them the same way you did in the second variant, and then it'll be possible to tell which is better =)

They bled from the ears and died hearing this devilish melody. And then Jester went and damaged his hands so that he would never play this cursed creation ever again.
So the old man in the graveyard likely became the Ghast in the Cove. While after the events, the Jester cut off his own finger and marred his right hand so he could never play that song again. Which explains the Crimson Courtyard trinket set. Though it was called the Tyrant's fingerbone... Hm. Also explains why the Jester seems to be missing a finger of his right hand when he interacts with curios in DD1
So without many spoilers (I'm waiting for the Steam release), is that the Squiffy Ghast? Did they know each other in life and that's why he only targets Sarmenti in the Cove?
