  • This video is getting soo freaking many views... I no longer have one of these in my possession... is there any interested in me acquiring another one and doing and updated version? Maybe a little higher production value, a little higher quality video, maybe complete teardown all the way to removing the motherboard, and maybe perhaps doing like an ultimate set of upgrades?? Or perhaps people are more interested in the same stuff but in maybe a newer version of this unit? If you click on this video and any of that sounds interesting, let me know... seems like the only thing anyone really wants to see on my channel is Fortnite videos, so I thought id see what people think about an update to this video.
    Ok, I have been asked this enough at this point I feel it needs to be specifically mentioned. NO, you cannot do any meaningful video card related upgrades to this machine

I am still considering doing a full ultimate upgrades video for one of these if I can get some interest to justify spending the money, Comment if interested. I'm glad I found a video to figure out why mine didnt look like the other ones. I'm sending mine back as we speak. I need to be able to upgrade the processor, ram, and video card. So I'm sending this one back and getting the 8200 instead. And that one I know I can upgrade because it has the removable blank slots in the back.

    Hi Dragon, you're a saint for posting this. Anyway I note your remark about no useful Graphics upgrade. I foolishly already bought the HP 7650A MXM card cheapo $25. Installation involves making a heatsink (as usefully described elsewhere, Google it). But should I bother? Have you found the i7-3770S's HD4000 internal GPU to be essentially as good as the 7650A?.

    • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973  4 года назад

      I mean, I have not actually compared them, but that card is soo old I just dont see the machine as having any meaningful graphics performance beyond maybe decoding 1080p video, unless you want to play the whole, how low can I go on game settings games, but I doubt much of anything would play at even a marginal level. Also, I'm gonna bet the intel integrated will have greater long term driver support and potentially stability, but only time will tell on that one

    People are still looking at this, so here it goes. Thanks for the video, I’m considering a SFF computer and was curious.
    What I’m going to disagree with is you using a cloth to “wipe” the board. I used to work on computers for a living and can tell you first hand, that’s a very BAD idea. I’m sure you know what you’re doing, but others may not be as careful as you and literally break stuff on the board. I’ve been on the fixing end of people doing just that and they all thought they were “careful” enough but weren’t because they wound up destroying the board by being just a tad to aggressive with it...

    • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973  4 года назад

      Im sorry man, but I deal in the real world and ive seen... umm... zero systems damaged in this way, it just is not a real problem... but the truth is every time you touch a board you are taking a "risk"

    • @david78212

      @@dragonsystems5973 You can claim all you want about not seeing it yourself, but that doesn't mean it happen. Working in a shop and the guy came in with his system that he tried to put another video card in...for some reason it didn't "just work", so a friend of his told him to disable the on-board video. He took this one-step further and decided to "remove" the on-board video, and he did so with a dart and a butter knife... I never would have believed it, had I not seen it for myself. So just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
      BTW - We'll never know why the video card didn't work in the first place.

      @@david78212 I never said it couldn't happen, I said it was rare to the point of not being a real concern in the real world, at least with regard to how I work with systems. Seriously dude, why dont you go hop on Linus Tech Tips channel and complain every single time you see them working with hardware and not wearing a wrist strap. Great, it happened once, so you say, bro, I work with many many hundreds of machines a year. I have many many customers who I have sold many machines to over a decade now, and that is long enough to go thru the lifecycles of many machines with those customers, not a single one has had machines with suspicious premature failures. Now that I have wasted my time typing this up, go harass someone else, everyone working with hardware is well aware of how to take proper ESD precautions, but thanks for the reminder

    Also, the HP Elite 8300 would be a better way to go, it has dual pcie slots,1 is 1x, the other 16x, you can pop in a gtx 1550/1650 low profile video card and make a nice mid gaming system. Try to get one with m.2 slot, that way you can have 2 drives, one fast and one secondary.

    This little nugget of a PC is such an interesting looking one, that I kinda wanna just get one for the heck of it :P
    I also like how it has an MXM slot, which you could kinda "upgrade" the system with a compatible MXM GPU if you can find one that works. Honestly wish we had more small form factor devices like this one, especially one that instead just has a small ITX sized case for a shorter two slot GPU, like Zotacs RTX4060 solo. Such a device would most likely use a mobile intel i5 or something like that, but it would still be neat even if you can only really upgrade the ram/storage.

Second, the card options available or not "meaningful" upgrades, so stop saying that they are, and stop acting like you think I am to stupid to know what MXM is. Unless you go out and buy or can show me some reasonable sort of proof that it is real, and was done with lets say.... a GTX660M or better, Im not interested in changing my opinion. You can pretty much run any graphics card in this via the PCI-e mini port. If you have a PSU laying around, a graphics card then you can convert that mini port to a full size one for about 35 bucks (US). www.banggood.com/Mini-PCI-E-Version-V8_0-EXP-GDC-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-PCI-E-Expansion-Card-p-1011222.html?p=OA22116016194201608Y&custlinkid=773086 It will look ugly as you will not be able to fit the PSU and GPU inside, but if you want to game and put a modern GPU in it - This is one way to do it on the cheap.

      Honestly, there is not real functional upgrade to be had for the video. Yes, the dedicated card available is, from the research I could do probably double or maybe even triple the performance of the Intel integrated, but it still does not matter, the HD4000 is still soo slow that all you would be doing is going from really crappy to just crappy, I know it sucks, but I am pretty sure the reason everyone is picking these up for dirt cheap is because they basically have no resale without the expansion capabilities, keep in mind, this thing is basically a laptop in a small box with no screen. As far as ram, yes it should be easy to get 16Gigs in the machine. As far as music editing, I will say this, I provided one of these to a buddy of mine for music and video encoding work, I even told him it would get the job done, and nothing more, and he still complains even knowing that going into it.

    Hey, I found one of these computers for free and planning to make a home file server for backups. In the video you mentioned you’re putting in a core i3 cpu on 1155 socket. However I read this machine has a lga 775 cpu socket and it won’t support an i3 cpu. Will I be able to upgrade this to core i3 if I buy the same cpu model you used?

    You unplugged the SATA connector that was connected to the optical drive, but did not pull any connector out of the hard drive. • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973  5 лет назад

      I would recommend you get an 1155 S model chip, the S models are the lower wattage variations, they generally run at a slightly lower clock speed, I think a 3770S runs at 3.1Ghz, I have used them in gaming machines though and honestly it does not have a big affect, but for these small form factor units it makes a difference because the S model chips run cooler, and the cooling systems in these units are already limited, that said, I dont have the spec sheet in front of me, but I bet it would probably work with a normal 2600 or 3770, but run louder and hotter, but even if it will work with the normal non-S processor, I would still try to get my hands on one if I where you because it will run better

    • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973  5 лет назад +1

      Oh, and the specific chips that you would be looking for would be a 2600S and 3770S, im guessing the 3770S will be more common, and HP might not officially support the 2600S because the machines where technically designed for 3rd gen, and sometimes OEM's dont respect the Intel designed backwards compatibility.

    Forgive my excessive verbosity, I just wondered if anyone could opine.
    So I've been using one for a while, have given a good soak-test, it sort of worked. Then ..
    I logged in remotely from another notebook with linux ssh, like I'd been doing repeatedly fine. BTW it's a NAS server +HTPC, irrelevant. After some work I issued the usual shutdown -r 0 for a power-cycle. It went dead. It never recovered. I have exhaustively troubleshooted and the only thing I can propose is a mobo replace. Here's what it does.
    On push-button, lights white LED, beeps once, then does nothing. Fans stay on, system is powered up. But no BIOS talk and of course no attempt to boot anything, no storage fetch LED. Monitor says no signal. No anything. BTW I've tried a spare CPU, spare RAMs, no diff. I haven't replaced the CMOS battery and I don't have a spare HP-135W PSU, altho the one I have seems fine w nominal 19.35V, anyway it's been fine until now.
    Ideas?
    In passing - no bitterness - this saga defeats the whole purpose getting one in the 1st place.

    Since I posted a Q, I'll also share some learning. The issue with this machine is the stinking awful BIOS, which, despite my updating it to the very latest, still is unforgivably brain-dead. Bottom line: do not make a dual-boot (or worse, multi-boot). Especially, if you install 2 disks (a 2ndary in the DVD-slot, good idea) do not try to boot off either disk interchangeably. Why not? I can't bother to explain. Just load 1 OS (W7+W10+ubuntus I tried all worked fine), on the primary disk, and wasting hours trying to work around the brain-dead broken BIOS's "design" errors. Oh god why can't HP leave writing code to people who know what they're doing?

    • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973  4 года назад

      Yeah, but I gotta say, people are reading way to far into these machines, they simply where never intended to be something like a high performance custom itx or anything like that, they where really only intended to run basic office stuff for like 3 years per normal business requirements and then be dumped... I totally support people repurposing them as far as they can be, but I would not get too mad at HP for limitations that are associated with their original limited usage intent

    What size would I need to replace my optical drive with an SSD?

    • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973  5 лет назад

      Any SSD should fit in a standard SATA optical drive bay to sata hard drive adapter, however, you are going to want to put the SSD in the main drive bay, Im assuming you want that super fast boot up speed everyone raves about with SSD's, and you will need it to be your main drive to achieve that, simply throwing an SSD in your CD drive will only give you a speedy storage space, which wont give you very much effect. Your best bang for the buck, IMHO, is to replace your main drive with a 256Gig SSD(look around ebay, they can be had for $30-$40) Dont fall for the speed hype, just get the cheapest 256Gig SSD you can, I the HP 3rd gen unit here is too old to see any real tangible gains with an expensive higher performance model SSD. You would then want to replace your CD Drive with a 2TB 2.5 inch hard drive(2tb laptop drive) these too are readily available for under $100:

    • @thepolarblair1
      @thepolarblair1 3 года назад

      From what I understand you can only upgrade GPU two ways - MXM slot which gets you up to 1Gb card. You also need special screws and you need the heatsink.
      Then you can go mini pcie ribbon to external GPU dock. I think you could pair up to a 1050ti with this machine but that's about it.
      Power supply is an external laptop brick. If you have the MXM card then it will probably ship with the larger 180W version instead of the smaller 135W brick.

I do believe there is also an i7 2600S processor as well. I think there might even be some ultra low wattage T chips you can obtain. Just make sure to check the manufacturers page. That being said, YES, absolutely, where there is a will, a way, and loose money floating around someones wallet, you can do almost anything. I believe I have commented before, if that is really want you want to do, your better bet would be to go on craigslist, pick up a case, a cheap board, and a cheapo power supply and gut the unit, most of these have reasonably fast 2nd or 3rd gen i5 and i7 chips that would make the ideal base of a mid level gamer

      My experience with mini-pci-e slots is that they tend to be finicky about what devices that will accept, even if the device physically fits in the slot. HP is known to whitelist their cards and slots so that only HP original devices will work, ive even come across situations where even that was not good enough and you needed a card of approximately the same vintage as well.... Without actually testing the device I have no way to be certain... even if I saw a forum post somewhere that had someone saying it worked this is the kind of item I would not believe it until I had it up and running myself.... that said, my inclination is to suspect that it would not work... however, even if it did, it seems like a solution in search of a problem, if you look at some of my newer reviews I reviewed the dell version of these machines, and those actually have a 16x PCI-E and only cost a small amount more on the second hand market, I believe an optiplex model 7010 or 7020 is what you would want, just get one of those and order an SFF GTX1050 Ti and be done with it
