  • Hamish de Bretton-Gordon OBE is Director of DBG Defence. He is a senior executive with a military, humanitarian, charity and commercial experience. Hamish is a world leading authority on chemical weapons and humanitarian support in Syria, and a vocal advocate for Ukrainian victory.
    ----------
    CHAPTERS:
00:01:57 Trump and Vance have been advocates for reducing US military support to Ukraine.
00:03:42 Long range precision missiles like Storm Shadow are having a real impact.
00:05:18 European NATO countries really need to take up the heavy lifting before November.
00:08:32 The fact Ukraine can't strike into Russia to hit its airfields and supply lines is ridiculous.
00:09:49 If Ukraine is unshackled it will have a severe effect on Russian ability strike Ukraine.
00:13:52 We need to do all we can to deter Russia rather than give them excuse to crack on.
00:16:32 The reason Ukraine has suffered so much is because Russia has had air superiority.
00:23:48 We need to accelerate innovation and agility otherwise we won’t deter the Russians.
00:27:20 The Prohibition of Chemicals details 3,200 uses of Chemical Weapons by Russia.
00:28:37 Assad is still in power because he used chemical weapons on his own population.
00:32:26 If we get Ukraine wrong stuff people are worrying about could become irrelevant.
00:35:03 The American election in November is a rallying call to the rest of Europe and NATO.

Fabulous informed guest. One of my favourites. Could Hamish de Bretton Gordon contact Defence Minister Blair of Canada directly about his gas mask initiative? I have written to him in the past about the need for Canada to step up their help for Ukraine. Trudeau appears to be disinterested, but there is a reported tension between the two, as Blair wants more done. The Premiers of our Provinces have recently tried to pressure Trudeau to commit to our 2% NATO contribution within a shorter time than the current position. Many Canadian power figures are weak kneed about lethal support, which is why the gas mask initiative seems such a good fit for Canada.

    • @Andygb78
      @Andygb78 Месяц назад

There's quite a lot of small scale specialist manufacturing going on in the UK. I think we could leverage some of this when it comes to manufacturing small scale specialist hardware, such as surveillance equipment and specialist armour, drones etc.
We do have a handful of defence manufacturers who have contracts to supply NATO forces, such as BAE systems & Avon protection to name a couple.

Something that no one has mentioned, the dilly dallying by the US will be seen by the other members of NATO as an indication that they can not be relied on. Making home designed and built equipment and munitions a preferable choice regardless of how much better the US equipment may be. European aircraft rather than US, likewise air defence systems. So less trade for US contractors and more for sales for European companies. Ergo US products become more expensive while European products become cheaper due to larger orders.

That is already going on. The gears are turning slowly, of course (what else)...but this is being discussed for a while now. Now that Biden has withdrawn, with Harris the likely nominee, there is renewed enthusiasm for the democratic party and for Harris. Trump and his campaign are panicking. Where as before it sure looked like trump was going to be president again, not quite so fast now. Trump and Harris are tied in polls (and Harris is not really as well known ... yet). I do think it is likely that Harris will win.
Something to take note of - Harris's national security advisor, Phil Gordon, is very hawkish towards russia and putin. Were she to win, it is likely that he stays on as NSA, but now to the president. He would very likely remove all shackles as you and Hamish discussed. He would call for a more aggressive attitude to fight russia and defeat them.
It is sickening that NATO refuses to shoot down drones and missiles over Ukraine. Damn, the last couple of days, drones have been flying over Romania, even crashing on Romanian territory in some cases, and nothing is being done. What is wrong with the west? Gordon would call for closing the skies.

Ukraine needs to shoulder some blame for their lack of preparation and their refusal to acknowledge the massive threat that their neighbour posed to them.
NATO however needs to understand that Ukrainians are fighting not only for their future but also to defend the Baltic states from Russia.
NATO proper is under no threat at all from the Moscow, therefore nearly all our stocks of low/medium tech materiel should be funnelled into Ukraine for use on the frontline.
Horading weapons for a war we'll never fight is pointless while a hot war with Russia is actually happening and is very winnable for a fellow democracy.

lack of preparation? the Ukraine military has had the best part of 10 years to prepare. After the EuroMaidan coup d'état in 2014, NATO led by the US flooded the country with trainers and instructors, supplied the Ukraine military with kit, built several brigades and performed regular NATO exercices,. So of course they were prepared. secondly, the Baltic states where never under threat.

Arms delivery is not cut and dried. Most of the arms sought require training, (more than I got as a squad leader, light weapons infantry). Also to be considered is the unfortunate truth that Europe hasn't a shotgun in the attic, so giving arms is "hampered by unavailability". They can make automobiles but not 155mm shells. The US is staring at two volatile situations a half a world apart which are interconnected and US stockpiles have been neglected by every administration since Regan. The US would want to hide this. Russia is looking incoherent, staggering about with rabies, and might be less rational than we think they are. The trick is to control the technology so Russia is unable to respond when the hammer is dropped. Last card up (in 7 card stud). Of course, the outcome of this war has already been determined and it will simply have to play out to find the cost.

The Russification of Ukraine started in 2014, but so did Ukrainification of Russia. Russians started learning from Ukrainians how to self-organise. More and more Russians started learning, and more and more started applying what they learned to their businesses and their communities. Putin tried to counter this trend with his old methods of persuasion, but as soon as Russian entrepreneurs, students and journalists started self-organising politically, as well, during Covid, he knew his reign would be over, soon.
So he made sure to destroy the source of the influence, to expel the incurable Russian self-organisers, to achieve government control over businesses, media, and education, and to burden the military with an expeditionary task so enormous, that they would no longer be able to stalk the palace corridors.
This is what happened tens of times in the history of the Roman and Byzantine Empires. The Russian empire having claimed right of succession over these empires centuries ago, I see no reason why I should explain the Russo-Ukrainian war from a more original perspective.
There’s no playbook at work, only the compulsion of a pathologicallly unimaginative ruler to revert to the oldest of traditions. He does not want to restore the Soviet Union. He just wants to remain in power.

Totally agree with your headline. I feel the West, my West, is still being utterly wet if failing to give Ukraine all it needs to beat Russia hands down. Putin will never give up unless he is squashed flat. He set out his plans (apparently) in 2003 at a meeting in Yinsk of all his senior team. (Listen to an interview on Kyiv Post) Iliaronov. I think the assumption that Trump will be US Pres appears misplaced

Ukraine has received all that it needs over the past 10 years, especially since the coup d'état. unfortunately for the Ukraine military (NATO), the war has dragged on far too long, and it has not got the capacity to produce the armements at scale.

      - China benefits - they get territory and suzerainty over Russia. They get potentially a signal that they can "get away with" an invasion of Taiwan like they did Tibet.
      - India benefits - they get cheap natural resources at the cost of a geopolitically stronger China, but they probably see the demographics and think they can outlast Chinese and eventually get influence over central Asia.
      - Iran and DPRK benefit by getting access to Russian (Soviet) tech and cash in exchange for low tech munitions.
      - Islamists benefit as there is one fewer country working against them and two more countries with weak policing they can try to set up in. They benefit anywhere there is instability.
The ones who don't benefit are Africans (as net food importers they suffer when two major breadbaskets have a breakdown of industry), Europe (loss of cheap energy from Russia and power from Ukraine. Less stability requiring more defense spending to defend from Russian aggression, loss of a democracy that is improving to join the EU), the US (loss of world influence and stability affecting trade, rule of law, and food prices), and the Syrian government (loss of Russian support for their authoritarian ruling party).

My original thoughts seem to have been censored so Ill try a more moderate repost. HDBG said without challenge that NATO boots will be forced on the ground in Ukraine. Maybe the Baltics or France would try in small numbers but never the US in its current stance so that sadly is a non-starter. The guest then made a passing claim that Russia had lost 600,000 dead. Not even the wildest estimations say so. I understand why it was not challenged as who wants to undermine a guest in their beliefs but it showed up clearly the extremity of opinion. My question is, do such unquestioned claims help or hinder?

    • @betterdonotanswer
      @betterdonotanswer Месяц назад +1

Muscovite losses are over 572 thousands now, on 26 July 2024. Those are dead bodies only, either collected on the baterfield or confirmed visually and these numbers do not include died of wounds later. Back in 1945 Muscovite losses were estimated as 8 million, but after the final calculation they turned out over 12 million. The same pattern applies onto any war waged by Muscovy, including this one.

Ukrainian reports have been confirmed miltiple times by various leaked Muscovite documents, so this discounted Muscovite simply cannot discount them and he is not counted enough to demand, request, ask, beg or plead for anything. There is no other source on this planet more reliable and more informed of Muscovite losses than the general staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
