Dave! I feel like the reason Californication John motivates you is because of where he was at that time! Just getting clean and joining the band again he was almost reborn, when you listen to his playing in that era you must pick up on those vibes and be motivated by it! The fact that John was able to play epicly with so much passion after being in the brink of death (due to his past addiction) is probably the most significant point of his first return!
The great thing about John is there's an era for everyone. It's quite unusual to find such a recognized guitar player that has so many definably different playing styles throughout their playing career. I first knowingly hopped on at the Californication era and just adore that melodic and textural playing style he had at the time. Since then Blood Sugar era has become a huge favorite but let's be honest, who doesn't like Slane Castle John or the more guitar hero Stadium Arcadium era? I actually love how he's playing live right now as he's blended all of his styles together and just seems to know exactly when to dip into each one at the right moment. Niandra Lades also holds a special place in my heart. I used to listen to that record to death about 10 years ago when I was going through a bit of a rough time and found so much comfort in his playing on that record. No band or other musicians for him to fit in with, just John and a four track expressing his emotions.
Man, you’re BEAUTIFUL. You are what a soul looks like in its “birthday suit” in every single moment, whatever you’re doing- playing, talking without playing, reviewing a piece of gear, scratching your head, etc etc etc. It is impossible to miss for anyone who understands the meaning of these words, even academically, unless their attention is absent or hypnotized by the glitter of some entirely trivial object and are thereby constrained to look right past you, as if watching through a keyhole that they carry around for use in place of proper eyeglasses or a jeweler’s loupe. These deserve pity and compassion, not derision. What deprivation! What pathos. To anyone else- what I say is the most salient article to appear in any space occupied by you. That comeback era for the Peppers was just absolutely magical and spiritually captivating. I remember being 11-years-old when Californication was released and those times were just truly magical and I am sure you’ll agree to that as well! Man I’ll tell ya, that gig from the Bizarre Festival 1999 where John plays most of the setlist on his maple neck 1955 Stratocaster is just utterly magnificent in my humble opinion. Man if you ever get time to just sit and watch that whole entire show in it’s entirety, it will astound you!, John was absolutely unquestionably at his musical peak during that era, and as a band, they were so tight and locked in to each other! All of those gigs from 1999 into early 2000 were just amazing! For sentimental reasons, I hold that era of John’s playing in the highest regard possible just like you do! My fav era of John is 2010-2017. His guitar playing on the electronic records of that period is amazing, along with several stuff he did with The Black Knights. In that period he shows his more techincal side, even doing sweep picking on the song "Guitar" from PBX. But also playing little weak sounding but beautiful melodic solos like In Your Eyes. Or crazy King Crimson style solos like Same or Cinch. Such a creative era for him, and it's so overlooked, it kinda makes me sad because he is expressing such a pure part of himself on that records and people just say it's shit by listening to those just once, or not listenign at all. PS: the "4 Track Guitar Music" ep he put out in 2015 is wonderful too, I think you might like it Dave
@@Luminolo yeah, if you like it listen to Robert Fripp from King Crimson, he was his main influence on the guitar those years. Listen to the St Elmo’s Fire by Brian Eno, Robert Fripp plays guitar there and he sounds so similar to John’s playing on Pbx and Enclosure
Hey Dave, I absolutely love that era of John’s live playing as well. There’s something about his tone that’s unique and really hits you (have heard you discuss that before 😅). I would be curious to know if you’ve seen the Shoreline Amphitheater show from 1999. If not (or not recently), it’s just beautiful and the whole band is playing great. One of my all time favorites.

Great video. When I watched their Woodstock 99 performance was the night I fell in love with the chili peppers. My favorite peppers album is californication and my favorite John era would either be that era or the current era. I agree 100% with what you say about finding comfort in his playing. Him and flea have really cracked the code to playing the right notes. I’m not good at picking favorites but the first solo from “I could have lied” studio version, “I could have lied” Off The Map solos, “californication” studio version solo, and “scar tissue” final solo from their 2022 LA show I was lucky enough to be at are the solos that make me emotional every time I hear them. And one final note; we shouldn’t ever need or expect to meet our heroes but never say never. One day I was having dinner with some friends and flea walked in and sat down 5 feet from me. Life is unpredictable.

I must admit I have a weak spot for "Show Off John" from the By The Way era. Just because the backing vocals are so loud in this period, it gives me the chills every time. But I agree that the most emotional period is 1999-2000, John was definitely purging and letting it all out for us, leaving us with teary eyes every goddamn time!
I'm more familiar with John's solo work, my favourite albums are The Empyrean and Enclosure. Especially the empyrean is a very revealing work and unique.

Only 3 guitar solos got me in tears through years of listening music : First one was Machine Gun live from the Band of Gypsies album, made me crying out of the anger and frustration it expresses. Second one was the first solo in I Could Have Lied from the off the map DVD. That guitar was wailing. Third one was from the album version of Strip My Mind. So simple yer so powerful.
My favourite era was the By the Way album - I remember being off school ill with the flu for 2 weeks in I think 2002 and that album was on constant repeat. It has a lot of sentimental value. For his solo work I like To record water and smile from the streets you hold.
Nice man. My favorite era of Frusciante's guitar playing happens on the track called 'Dissolve' on the DC EP. It's so raw and perfect and from the heart. All while recording on the gear at Inner Ear instead of his own stuff. And yet, it's still John all the way! Also, I was going to mention that the solo that gets you in the feels really reminds me of Depeche Mode. I hear it I guess just knowing that they were an influence of his. He covered Depeche Mode live when I saw him play at the Roxy with Midget Handjob in the early oughts during his To Record Only Water for Ten Days/From the Sounds Inside era. It was just him and his mahogany Martin acoustic guitar and his little voice mixer/echo unit and a bottle of kava kava. And he was amazing!
Your tone is off the charts in this video! I would also add the BTW era. To me, John's approach to the guitar in Cali and BTW exist in the same world, also tying into his solo work at that time. It's really the single note, melodic stuff that set his improv apart, eventually progressing to the addition of insane Van Halen esque super fast licks. Cheers!

I can't believe you used the word mournful for the scar tissue solo as its the most fitting word I can think of .I personally get goosebumps when I hear or play it. 😊

As Usual your video about John fruszciante touches me in every parts of my whole body. I have an extremely special feeling with the chihli peppers and more precisely about John Frusciante. I remember the very first time I listened and saw the chili peppers. It was in summer 1990 and it was the song Higher Ground it was on Mtv on my TV in the early morning I was 7 years old my parents were shouting to each others and they were totally broken, and they announced me and my little brother that they are not together anymore and they were angry about each other. I stayed speechless, my entire world was literaly collapsing, I couldn't understand what was going on but I was devastated, and on the television a very special sound popped on the screen and the riff was so powerful so positive too. the video was insane ! I remember seeing this guy with his guitar I found him so so so so cool ! I didn't know the name of that band and even the name of the song but I stayed hours and hours front of MTV waiting to see that song again and it popped in the evening and I read carefuly the name with my father and he said it's read hot chili peppers. This is the first time I heard the name of my favorite band of all time. I wanted to mention that because it's really important to me and to let you know how RHCP took my hand at my lowest feeling and saddest part of my life. And to awser to your question in the video, What's my favorite John's Era? It's 2002 with by the way, to me if I would achieve one specific Frusciante's guitar tone it would be that era because by the way is my favorite RHCP album but I loved the process of recording of this album, how john is involved in the writing and recording process, I love every song of this album. And I remember it's the first time I saw their name on a festival schedule for real it was at Rockwerchter 2002 and I couldn't be there but the show was amazing and I saw them for the first time last year in 2022 and it was at rockwerchter on the 20'th birthday of by the way. I understand how you feel when you are down, how John F. music helps you, that is what Hendrix does for me all the time, John F. some of the time. Mothers Milk got me through 2 whole years, 1998-99. Scar Tissue, the sound on that, saved my life when it came out.

Mine is the mid 2000s. Or 2004 to specific, he made THREE solo albums that year and most of my favourite songs are from those. Have you heard the new album? Minimalist electronics. I don't get it. But I'm happy he's still creating.
By the Way was my favorite era, as it was the first time is saw them live with John. Slane Castle hits me like a ton of bricks when i listen to it, from beginning to end
I blinkin well love Californication - dark and moody but sounds great and is very original too in many ways. I ought to get BSSM as well. I like By the Way a lot too. Great band with a very emotive guitar player in your hero, and Dave, never say never... all the best to you and keep up your amazing guitar playing and creativity.
First time I heard RHCP was around 1986 when I saw the skateboarding movie Trashin' that featured Blackeyed Blonde. Next time was their 1988 live concert in Finland which aired on TV (sadly one of Hillel's last shows), which was something totally different than anything I had seen before. Flea entered the stage shouting "F*ck you Finland, F*ck you" and I was shocked and amused :) They were the most energetic and weird band and the Fire cover with the socks was so hilarious to a 10 year old me. First time I heard Frusciante was about a year later, when Higher Ground played on the radio. I really liked it, but BSSM was the album that made them one of my favourite bands. I had started playing the guitar myself and I could not believe the amount of insanely good riffs, licks and solos (and songs) on the album. I used to watch the Funky Monks VHS over and over too. But to answer the question, my favourite era is 1999 - 2004 and mainly because of his solo albums. RHCP is a fun band, but I am connected to his solo work on a much deeper level. I think John is even better as a singer/songwriter than just as being (one of the best ever) guitarist in a band. To Record Only Water is an album that I can always go to. The lyrics, the songs, the raw sound - it just makes me feel good. The same goes to all the albums he released in 2004, but To Record is the most important and personal album for me. Having survived depression and anxiety a few years ago has made those albums even more important to me, if possible. Last couple of years I have been really into Niandra, which at the time of the release was a bit too much for me. Even Smile from the Streets has some really good stuff on it. Ok, I think I need to get back to work. Thanks Dave for your wonderful channel - I was about to throw my Zoom G2.iu away, until I saw you playing Dust with it. It was unused for over 10 years, but now that I found the good sounds on it, I use it daily.
I know the feeling. Slane solos do the same for me. His sense of melody and harmony, vocally and instrumentally are just amazing. He seems to be in a shredding and feedback phase of late and in a really good place mentally. I do miss the more melodic solos tho. Can't wait to see them in Glasgow... Finally!
My favourite era is around From the sounds inside / Brown bunny. A fan since I heard Pretty little ditty in 1989. If my house catches fire I'll grab Niandra La Des even though I know I can just buy it. This album was just IT for me. Bought it three times because the cd went bad after too much playtime. Saw him live in Paradiso 2001 in the upstairs room. Even chatted shortly afterwards.
californication was great for his sadder, simpler sound, probably inspired by his solo recordings and just the idea of finding inspiration in simple music. i still think he was pushing the edge and doing the most unique things during BBSM. but i definitely prefer his californication/btw vibe more than the stuff from stadium onwards. his solo albums in the 1994-2004 era are also my favorite, especially his 'worst' albums from the 90s, regardless of the drug backstory, or probably because of it.

2007 was Johns peak with Guitar skills and Creativity. That End Jam from the Poland Chorzow Concert will be unmatched forever. How you do this right on the spot is beyond me.

My fave era is 2003 BTW era --- slane castle is imo johns best performance, along with even the rest of the band. Everyone was on point. But i think there is something very distinct about the way john is playing in 1999 as you've outlined in this video -- almost lighting in a bottle. 2002-3 era is maybe not as distinct but to me its the point where john is back on his A-game as a guitar player and really back comofrtable with it again. Then again, its also the era that brought upon the californication intro gem of slane castle

Only 3 guitar solos got me in tears through years of listening music :
First one was Machine Gun live from the Band of Gypsies album, made me crying out of the anger and frustration it expresses.
Second one was the first solo in I Could Have Lied from the off the map DVD. That guitar was wailing.
Third one was from the album version of Strip My Mind. So simple yer so powerful.
Dave keep doing your thing and I am sure John will cross your path.
What a great way to expand yourself by channeling through music what can impossibly be said with words.
My favourite era was the By the Way album - I remember being off school ill with the flu for 2 weeks in I think 2002 and that album was on constant repeat. It has a lot of sentimental value.
For his solo work I like To record water and smile from the streets you hold.
Nice man. My favorite era of Frusciante's guitar playing happens on the track called 'Dissolve' on the DC EP. It's so raw and perfect and from the heart. All while recording on the gear at Inner Ear instead of his own stuff. And yet, it's still John all the way!
Also, I was going to mention that the solo that gets you in the feels really reminds me of Depeche Mode. I hear it I guess just knowing that they were an influence of his. He covered Depeche Mode live when I saw him play at the Roxy with Midget Handjob in the early oughts during his To Record Only Water for Ten Days/From the Sounds Inside era. It was just him and his mahogany Martin acoustic guitar and his little voice mixer/echo unit and a bottle of kava kava. And he was amazing!

Your tone is off the charts in this video! I would also add the BTW era. To me, John's approach to the guitar in Cali and BTW exist in the same world, also tying into his solo work at that time. It's really the single note, melodic stuff that set his improv apart, eventually progressing to the addition of insane Van Halen esque super fast licks. Cheers!
I thought you first meant could have lied then you did mention it and 99 is my fave era too but then I remember solos like wet sand and how great the stadium arcadium album was too theres just so much for me to pinpoint a favourite period. I can't believe you used the word mournful for the scar tissue solo as its the most fitting word I can think of .I personally get goosebumps when I hear or play it. 😊

As Usual your video about John fruszciante touches me in every parts of my whole body.
I have an extremely special feeling with the chihli peppers and more precisely about John Frusciante.
I remember the very first time I listened and saw the chili peppers. It was in summer 1990 and it was
the song Higher Ground it was on Mtv on my TV in the early morning I was 7 years old my parents were
shouting to each others and they were totally broken, and they announced me and my little brother that
they are not together anymore and they were angry about each other. I stayed speechless, my entire
world was literaly collapsing, I couldn't understand what was going on but I was devastated,
and on the television a very special sound popped on the screen and the riff was so powerful so
positive too. the video was insane ! I remember seeing this guy with his guitar I found him so so so
so cool ! I didn't know the name of that band and even the name of the song but I stayed hours and
hours front of MTV waiting to see that song again and it popped in the evening and I read carefuly
the name with my father and he said it's read hot chili peppers. This is the first time I heard
the name of my favorite band of all time.
I wanted to mention that because it's really important to me and to let you know how RHCP
took my hand at my lowest feeling and saddest part of my life.
And to awser to your question in the video, What's my favorite John's Era?
It's 2002 with by the way, to me if I would achieve one specific Frusciante's guitar tone it would be
that era because by the way is my favorite RHCP album but I loved the process of recording of
this album, how john is involved in the writing and recording process, I love every song of this album.
And I remember it's the first time I saw their name on a festival schedule for real it was at
Rockwerchter 2002 and I couldn't be there but the show was amazing and I saw them for the first time
last year in 2022 and it was at rockwerchter on the 20'th birthday of by the way.

By the Way era, and when I get back at it in 2018 thanks to you Dave. I directly dived into that era
and I wanted to sound like that tone, I wanted to get as close as I could with my boss katana you
really saved my life as musician I'm playing the guitar since 1994 and in 2018, after 7 years my
first band splitted and it was destroying me from the inside for many personal reasons, more of
that I was very very far from the chili peppers because john wasn't there anymore. I was listening
to Empyrean because it's my favourite John frusciante solo album but I was saddly far from rhcp and
I saw your video about the boss katana and how to sound like John Frusciante and I was like
"oh my god this guy understand perfectly what feel about John Frusciante" how to sound like john with
a small amount of money but well invested, a boss katana a squier strat boss DS-2 and a WH10.
That video is the key, the turning point of my life as guitar player.
And By the way era is also my favorite for John's pedalboard it's a spaceship :D and I love the
possibilites of that board.
I'm sorry for the real big fat comment I wrote, I realize that it took me 1h and a half to explain

Mother's Milk is my favorite RHCP album. Love Taste the Pain.
I understand how you feel when you are down, how John F. music helps you, that is what Hendrix does for me all the time, John F. some of the time. Mothers Milk got me through 2 whole years, 1998-99. Scar Tissue, the sound on that, saved my life when it came out.
These are my favorite type of videos! Nobody I know likes frusciante enough to understand the eras, I like them all the same for different reasons although im always drawn to niandra.

Mine is the mid 2000s. Or 2004 to specific, he made THREE solo albums that year and most of my favourite songs are from those. Have you heard the new album? Minimalist electronics. I don't get it. But I'm happy he's still creating.

By the Way was my favorite era, as it was the first time is saw them live with John. Slane Castle hits me like a ton of bricks when i listen to it, from beginning to end

First time I heard RHCP was around 1986 when I saw the skateboarding movie Trashin' that featured Blackeyed Blonde. Next time was their 1988 live concert in Finland which aired on TV (sadly one of Hillel's last shows), which was something totally different than anything I had seen before. Flea entered the stage shouting "F*ck you Finland, F*ck you" and I was shocked and amused :) They were the most energetic and weird band and the Fire cover with the socks was so hilarious to a 10 year old me.
First time I heard Frusciante was about a year later, when Higher Ground played on the radio. I really liked it, but BSSM was the album that made them one of my favourite bands. I had started playing the guitar myself and I could not believe the amount of insanely good riffs, licks and solos (and songs) on the album. I used to watch the Funky Monks VHS over and over too.
But to answer the question, my favourite era is 1999 - 2004 and mainly because of his solo albums. RHCP is a fun band, but I am connected to his solo work on a much deeper level. I think John is even better as a singer/songwriter than just as being (one of the best ever) guitarist in a band. To Record Only Water is an album that I can always go to. The lyrics, the songs, the raw sound - it just makes me feel good. The same goes to all the albums he released in 2004, but To Record is the most important and personal album for me. Having survived depression and anxiety a few years ago has made those albums even more important to me, if possible. Last couple of years I have been really into Niandra, which at the time of the release was a bit too much for me. Even Smile from the Streets has some really good stuff on it. Ok, I think I need to get back to work. Thanks Dave for your wonderful channel - I was about to throw my Zoom G2.iu away, until I saw you playing Dust with it. It was unused for over 10 years, but now that I found the good sounds on it, I use it daily.
I know the feeling. Slane solos do the same for me. His sense of melody and harmony, vocally and instrumentally are just amazing. He seems to be in a shredding and feedback phase of late and in a really good place mentally. I do miss the more melodic solos tho. Can't wait to see them in Glasgow... Finally!

My favourite era is around From the sounds inside / Brown bunny. A fan since I heard Pretty little ditty in 1989. If my house catches fire I'll grab Niandra La Des even though I know I can just buy it. This album was just IT for me. Bought it three times because the cd went bad after too much playtime. Saw him live in Paradiso 2001 in the upstairs room. Even chatted shortly afterwards.
I think the most funky thing John ever did is bending A string on i could have lied solo in stockholm 99 with fz-3
californication was great for his sadder, simpler sound, probably inspired by his solo recordings and just the idea of finding inspiration in simple music. i still think he was pushing the edge and doing the most unique things during BBSM. but i definitely prefer his californication/btw vibe more than the stuff from stadium onwards. his solo albums in the 1994-2004 era are also my favorite, especially his 'worst' albums from the 90s, regardless of the drug backstory, or probably because of it.

For me it's 2006, when he use to jump all over the stage. I think now is at the peak of his guitar playing but in 2006 he was crazy on stage.
2007 was Johns peak with Guitar skills and Creativity. That End Jam from the Poland Chorzow Concert will be unmatched forever. How you do this right on the spot is beyond me.

My fave era is 2003 BTW era --- slane castle is imo johns best performance, along with even the rest of the band. Everyone was on point. But i think there is something very distinct about the way john is playing in 1999 as you've outlined in this video -- almost lighting in a bottle. 2002-3 era is maybe not as distinct but to me its the point where john is back on his A-game as a guitar player and really back comofrtable with it again. Then again, its also the era that brought upon the californication intro gem of slane castle
