I went to Russia for 2 weeks in 1981 and have to agree about just how 'backward' and introverted the entire society was. Most people acted so depressedly. And his description of the Dept Stores is bang on. Once you found something you wanted to buy, you queued to pay for it, got a chitty, then went and queued somewhere else to actually get your item. Being honest I loved the Kremlin and the highlight of Moscow had to be a full afternoon tour around the 'Exhibition of Economic Achievement,' displaying good last seen in the UK in the early 60's. Kiev was laid back and Leningrad (St Petersburg,) was exceptional. There was even a future Labour Shadow Minister on our tour (Kate Green.)
I would loved to have seen the reception that Quo got when they played there as I'm not sure just how popular they were (or allowed to be,) in Russia.
    RIP Rick and Alan.
