  • Street punk is an urban working class based subgenre of punk rock which partly emerged as a rebellion against the perceived artistic pretensions of the first wave of British punk. Street punk emerged from the style of Oi and hardcore punk bands, A key band in defining the aesthetic was the Exploited. Street punks generally have a much more ostentatious and flamboyant appearance than the working class or skinhead image cultivated by many Oi groups, Street punks commonly sported multi coloured hair, mohawks, tattoos, heavily studded vests and leather jackets and clothing, especially plaids, adorned with political slogans, patches and or the names of punk bands. In the 1990s and 2000s a street punk revival began with emerging street punk bands such as the Casualties. Street punk music is characterized by single note guitar lines and short solos, Unlike similar genres such as traditional hardcore punk, street punk bands sometimes consisted of two guitarists one of which plays guitar melodies while not singing. Street punk also makes frequent use of communal vocals, gang vocals and sing along choruses, Street punk lyrics commonly address topics including fighting, drinking, partying, inner city turmoil or personal relationships. Street punk bands sometimes express political viewpoints, typically of a left wing variety, although some street punks eschew politics altogether in favor of a more hedonistic, nihilistic outlook. Street punk also had influences from New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Motörhead.

we had a website titled uk82 bandlist a decade or two ago about what you explain. it was setup by various aged record collectors from several countries and we tried to gather as much info about the UK (and some Irish too i guess) bands from about before or after 1982, it continously expanded to 1979-1985 and in some cases 1987. Bands from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and North Ireland at the "UK82" time had a sound that was rare in the rest of the world. and it did not matter if it was an Oi!, anarcho, goth or any other genre, it was the "UK82" sound. there were other UK82 websites as well and i can not tell how they describe it, they may disagree my words about it i do not know. and it was also ment to gather info about all the bands that could not afford to release their own record and was not lucky to get their songs onto compilation LPs, but had recorded material released on DIY tapes etcetera. i think the "streetpunk" title was born by US and Japanese bands in the late 90's that wanted to be recognized with the uk82 bands. they had a very different sound to me. i remember listening to the Blitz EP in 1990 and it felt like it was as old as the pyramids of giza / now thinking about an EP i released by my own band in 2008 feel like yesterday now in 2023. a bit weird getting older i guess. there was an option at the website provider to pay a £100 payment to get a lifetime access to the the uk82 bandlist page and i paid that, but one day some years later they pulled the plug and it was all gone. as you say it was PUNK bands from the 80's, which i do not want to be confused with offspring or the streetpunk bands either for that matter. to me it is UK82 (i hope it is understandable, i am Swedish ). Cheers!

@@uk82punkz cheers for the reply. I certainly wasn't picking holes in anything you said. Is The Swedish Rock, Punk scene still thriving. I absolutely love The Backyard Babies and Hellacopters. Any other bands you'd recommend.
The Scandinavian Rock scene always seemed so good what with Hanoi Rocks, who back in the early 80s I knew quite well especially Razzle he was a good friend ( English I know). Also Turbonegro a great band.
