The first gargoyle you got allow you to dash to some obstacles to move them. As examples, the kind of fire statues you passed by after the town. I loved that game so much back in the day.
This game is one of the best on the SNES library. Four endings, lots of stuff for the collector in you, awesome soundtrack, amazing backgrounds and art, and the gameplay is on point. There is a lot to love, and it can be finished in a reasonable timeframe.
There is a game called "Gargoyles Quest" on the game boy, where you actually play as Firebrand, very similar to the game here. In my eyes one of the best game boy games and i played it a lot as a kid 🙂
For SNES recommendations, you've gotta play Actraiser 2 if you're looking for an insanely difficult game and Actraiser 1 if you're looking for a city builder/action game hybrid and both are insanely addicting. EVO: Search for Eden is also really cool. You start as a primordial fish creature and collect body parts by eating other monsters. Eventually, your actions dictate your next evolution until eventually you turn into a caveman. It's a little grindy, but still really cool.
So I know Ryukahr has already played Super Castlevania IV, but I highly recommend he plays *Castlevania: Bloodlines* on the Genesis! It is also a classic that I think he might enjoy!
@@davidwatkins8474I remember when Ryu finally collected the Crissagrim sword in the upside down castle. If he plays this game again with the same save file, he should collect 2 Rings of Varda to see how strong this sword can get.
Bloodlines is the best classic Castlevania game. Or at least it's equal to Rondo of Blood although for different reasons. Its so fast paced and feels amazing to play. I don't consider Super Castlevania IV to be a classic Castlevania game, because it plays very differently. It's basically its own series, a 1-game series that never got a sequel. Super Castlevania is to classic Castlevania as Mega Man X is to Mega Man, basically. And the metroid style castlevanias are also a separate series obviously. But yeah Bloodlines is absolutely a classic Castlevania game, it's that NES style gameplay taken to its logical conclusion. It just feels so great. I always thought Super Castlevania IV felt very slow and sluggish but Bloodlines absolutely doesn't, the gamefeel is on point. Rondo of Blood is mainly amazing for just how big it is, so if you ever fall down a bottomless pit you don't die, you end up in a brand new level and keep going from there so it's got like 10 different routes through the game. It's really bloody difficult though, or you could say it's really rondo of bloody difficult.
Oh, man, this is easily one of the best games on SNES. Fantastic stuff. If you like this, you should try the other Gargoyle's Quest games - this is basically GQ3.
@@ausgamecollector Definitely. I like to call it a proto-SotN. GQ2 is the weakest of the bunch, but still well worth playing.
Your control of the character for it being a new game to you is crazy good. This is an awesome game. I really like the actraiser games. If you like shoot em ups then maybe axelay for plane style and cybernator for more of a Metroid style.
Demon's Crest is one of the biggest hidden gems in the SNES, a blast to play. I had a great time seeing you discovering it (and knowing all the noob mistakes you did xD). Will love it if you continue playing it!
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen was a pretty amazing game if you've never played. Might be hard to get videos out of it your first run though, but that took as many hours out of my childhood as the original FF2 USA cartridge I farmed 2 Medusa blades, a pink tail, dragon whip, 2 glass helms on. 😲 Edit: twice you referenced the ghosts n goblins franchise, super ghouls n ghosts was meant as the sequel to ghosts n goblins, this one is a sequel to Goblins Quest on NES, which admittedly was meant to be a spin-off, in as much as firebrand was retroactively named and is meant to be that one red guy in ghosts n goblins, and this is kind of his story.
I love that this game is getting all this much deserved recognition. One of those games they have multiple ending, secrets to be uncovered, decent challenge. This is a MUST HAVE if anyone ever has the chance to get it original OR digitally.
Demon's Crest was that dream come true. To actually be able to use one of the villains of a game in its full glory. I didn't know of this game until I had to make a guitar cover for Halloween and came across "Memorial of the Fallen Ones" from Demon's Crest. Then I realized that this beautiful gem of a game existed. Definitely a hidden gem of a game

I'd like to see you try F-Zero 2 Grand Prix for the SNES. It's about the Ace League after the King League. It might be a ROM hack or unreleased, but it's definitely available.

Yes! I wanted you to play this game, I couldn't remember the name of it, but as a kid I could never figure this game out. I even rented it several times from blockbuster to try and beat but never could.
As a kid, I had a gaming magazine with a guide for this game. I was obsessed with the graphics, gameplay, and story. The first time I got to play it was over 10 years later on the 3ds. What an amazing game though!
love this game! one of the few imo genuinely underrated/overlooked gems on the SNES, even though over the years more people have become aware of it. you gotta get in a metroidvania mindset for this one though, it's not just a straightforward platformer but considerably more complex and interconnected and revisiting stages is basically mandatory, if only because almost all of them have multiple bosses and stage exits with numerous rewards attached. you seem to have figured it out by the end of this vid though ;) . I gotta say tho, I am genuinely impressed by how well you handled that skeleton boss in the boneyard. As you can probably tell, this guy is a smidge more difficult than other early bosses and is one of the first walls players have to overcome. even when properly prepared, he can take a couple of tries just due to how easily he can get hits in on you due to his large hitbox. I'd really like to see you play more of this, it's always interesting seeing people come into this genuinely fresh and slowly figuring out how much this game has going on under the hood.
The mid to late 90s produced a lot of great 2D games that were overshadowed at the time by everyone moving into 3D. That opening cinematic would have been a fondly remembered milestone of gaming history if it had come out two years earlier. Now its the sign that you stumbled onto forgotten gem that has become a required stop on any retro gamer's SNES tour.
Oh hell yes! Love that retro games are back would love to see more of this for sure. Act Raiser would be a hell of a game to see you do. Boss fights are fun and then a boss gauntlet at the end. Bad part is, it has city building sections that slow things down a bit, but still very fun game to play and figure out the secrets.
Demon's Breath is the sequel to Gargoyle's Quest (GB) which is the sequel to Gargoyle's Quest 2 (NES/GB). They are a spinoff series from Ghouls and Ghosts.
This is an amazing game with some really nice unlocks/powers. The true final boss was a lot of fun too. It’s been years, but there is an ultimate gargoyle you can unlock from what I remember. It’s really worth a full play through. I think you would love it.
Shinning Force II on the Genesis has had my heart since I was a kid. Maybe not the most fun game to stream or for content creation, but I know you’d love it considering your love for retro rpgs. The combat and the character progression for each and every one of the many many characters you gather along the way still hasn’t been matched in my humble opinion till this very day.
Oh! Always nice to see someone discover this rare SNES gem. I'll give you a couple tips without spoilers. First, you don't want to 'fly over' everything because this game is very, very non-linear. Literally most of the game could be classified as "a secret" in the definition of other games. In this case, you actually got the stronger Air Crest before weaker Tornado because of very lucky choices. Second, all of your powers and projectiles are different, including damage/usage, so experiment and try using them to interact with anything that draws your eye. You can and should switch between powers in less than a second with practice. (It's even useful inside boss fights... ) Third, there is a "true ending" that happens to include one of the hardest and most awesome boss fights on SNES. Reaching it requires 100% collection of powerups etc, and you should absolutely do it. If you can tolerate dying fifty times. Ha. Edit; And on the map screen, there's an overhead view that will help give you a little bit of direction. But not every location is revealed...
When I was little, my older brothers would play this game in their room. I would beg and beg for them to let me in so I could hang out with them. I have very vivid memories of the beginning sequence, with the dragon. That dragon scared the absolute crap out of me... I always had to leave the room because the sounds would terrify me just as much as the visuals.
On the world map, you can press like, select or something to change the view to a top down, and it shows you areas you can go. Also, this changes as you progress thru the game, and there are multiple endings depending on when you go for the final level.
I found this game in a bundle of ROMs I downloaded one time, and played it on a whim. I had never heard of it, but it was SO good that I just had to complete it 100%... Glad you're enjoying it.
I love this game, I've only completed it once, though. You can get different endings based on how many items you get (filling out the Inventory screen is your completion rating). You can press Start (Or maybe X) on the map screen to see an overhead view. Also, some of the Fire crest powers are rendered unnecessary with the other Crest powers. For example, the Tornado shot you got at the end was "supposed" to be obtained before you got the Crest of Air to become Aerial Gargoyle. Finally, more levels open up the further you progress. When you think you've beaten the final boss, there is still a lot to do, more levels, more bosses, and a true ending boss.
This was the first game i ever played on my snes back in the 90's, my mind blew out with the map navigation and getting the ultimate Demon form when collecting all gems, awesome memories, thank you Ryu, really
Finally I get to see the game that a bunch of awesome VGM podcasts light to feature. This was a really cool looking game and it does look like a lot of fun. Please continue playing it!
Literally one of the best games on the SNES, Had amazing graphics, sound and gameplay mechanics for its time. Use to rent this all the time from blockbuster.
This is like "Gargoyle’s Quest" from the gameboy. A game i can only recommend! Firebrand is also the name of the main gargoyle in that game. So i think they are kinda simmilar.
For the statue you see something behind, you have to crash into it to move it. you weren't supposed to fight arma for the second time that early 😂, and for the breakable wall you need a more powerful breath 👍🏽 I love to see one of my favorites of all times getting a review
I played it as a kid, I really liked platform games where you can fly. It was kinda rare at the time. Not taking about UN Squadron type games but at the time Kirby, Iron Man’s character in some fighting game is all I remember
Gets the crest of "Earth" that allows him to change into "G. Gargoyle" that can break stone statues. A couple of minutes later: "Super looks like there's something behind that statue." *ignores it and leaves* 🤦♂
I can't believe I never played this it really has mega man, Castlevania Great Nintendo music. Growing up I just saw it as the blockbuster and was like yeah later it is a damn good game Once you start using the other abilities it opens the game up even more
Still watching, so not sure if you found out what a vellum is yet. It's a parchment of paper to write spells or enchantments on. lol. Also pretty entertaining to watch I'll add.
You should also play Gargoyle's Quest for Gameboy and Gargoyle's Quest II for NES if you haven't done so yet. They're pretty good. Although not as detailed in graphics as this game, those are games that occur before Demon's Crest.
The King of Dragons on SNES!! It’s a Turtles in Time-style fantasy brawler with very light RPG elements. Each level is fairly short, with some truly amazing bosses.
Since you asked, Ryu...hopefully within the next 5 or so years, you give Gameboy Advance's 2006 classic, Mother 3 a chance. It's a turn-based beauty, rich in humor, oddities, and character development. So many secrets. I've said too much already. A man can hope. Have a good day.
Hey man, there's also supposed to be a new Viking game in this kind of format that's going to be coming out later this month on the Nintendo Switch. You can take a look at it in the upcoming games section in the Nintendo Shop. That one looks interesting.
SNES: Secret of evermore - illusion of gaia - R-Type III - Donkey Kong Country 3 - Star Fox - Super Mario World 2 - Earthworm Jim 2 - Out of This World - Megaman X (and of course Zelda and Metroid) NES: Gargoyle's quest 2 - Faxanadu - The immortal - Castlevania 3 - Ninja gaiden - Ducktales 2 - Megaman 1-6 - Contra SEGA GENESIS: Alisia Dragoon - Wonder Boy in Monster World - Splatterhouse 2 - Rocket Knight Adventures - Castle of Illusion - Castlevania: Bloodlines - Beyond Oasis - Gunstar Heroes (Sonic of course)
Damn this game looks fantastic! Absolutely love the spritework and the classicvania vibes. I saw it on NSO but had no idea what it was, now I'm going to have to play it. For game suggestions, did you ever finish the Super Star Wars trilogy? I remember seeing you play Empire Strikes Back, I think, but only the first level and then never saw anymore gameplay of it. Those games are so notoriously difficult but they were a big part of my childhood so I'd love to see you play them all!

I had forgotten this game existed, but I remember loving it.
Definitely play through this game there are so many secrets and unlockables it’s amazing
Please more of this great game! the things you wanted to push at the beginning make me think of Rygar, please play Rygar too
I found this game in a bundle of ROMs I downloaded one time, and played it on a whim.
Just in case nobody mentioned it yet:
DC is a SEQUEL to the Gargoyle's Quest 1 and 2, that debuted on GameBoy and NES respectively.
I would love to see you do a full play through of this game, looks super cool
You have no Idea how much I love this game, it's beautiful and a masterpiece. Its prequel "Gargoyle quest" is also a great game.
..... not prequel, but predecessor. A prequel is a sequel (follow-up) that has it's story taking place before it's predecessor's story setting 👍
@@TexasHollowEarth It does, Firebrand gets incarcerated after the events of gargoyle quest.
Hardest last boss I ever fought. For the life of me I can't beat him with SAVE STATES.
I can't believe how diverse this game is it's crazy love the rpg elements
You're playing as Firebrand from Gargoyles Quest, a side game to Ghost and Goblins franchise, which had multiple games on NES and Gameboy
love when you play retro games
Please play more of this! would love a full playthrough
42:57 hell yeah, more more more
This was the first game i ever played on my snes back in the 90's, my mind blew out with the map navigation and getting the ultimate Demon form when collecting all gems, awesome memories, thank you Ryu, really
Please finish the game, PLEASE !!!
After flying in the overworld and landing near a river, that river is in the background... nice. I also loved SoM.
If you haven't tried it, I would recommend contra hard cops or DK jungle beat
Finally I get to see the game that a bunch of awesome VGM podcasts light to feature. This was a really cool looking game and it does look like a lot of fun. Please continue playing it!
Literally one of the best games on the SNES, Had amazing graphics, sound and gameplay mechanics for its time. Use to rent this all the time from blockbuster.
So many people don't know this game, and there is so much to find in it
This is like "Gargoyle’s Quest" from the gameboy.
This was a great idea and title. Yes for more old school. Maybe weird games that are hard like Hyperzone, Brainlord, or Combat Basketball.
Gets the crest of "Earth" that allows him to change into "G. Gargoyle" that can break stone statues.
A couple of minutes later: "Super looks like there's something behind that statue." *ignores it and leaves*
🤦♂
I remember this game as a kid, You brought back nostalgia for real.
Other quick mentions:
gunstsar heroes( another boss heavy game )
Contra for the genesis,
Pulseman ( platformer from Pokémon creators )
I can't believe I never played this it really has mega man, Castlevania
Great Nintendo music. Growing up I just saw it as the blockbuster and was like yeah later it is a damn good game
Once you start using the other abilities it opens the game up even more
This game looks phenomenal, I'd gladly watch a whole series where you beat it!
Still watching, so not sure if you found out what a vellum is yet. It's a parchment of paper to write spells or enchantments on. lol. Also pretty entertaining to watch I'll add.
There are actually 2 prequels of this game. Gargoyles quest on Gameboy and gargoyles quest 2 on the NES. They're both pretty good too.
You should also play Gargoyle's Quest for Gameboy and Gargoyle's Quest II for NES if you haven't done so yet. They're pretty good. Although not as detailed in graphics as this game, those are games that occur before Demon's Crest.
The game is from the line of Gargoyle's Quest for the Game Boy/NES. All very good games.
The King of Dragons on SNES!! It’s a Turtles in Time-style fantasy brawler with very light RPG elements. Each level is fairly short, with some truly amazing bosses.
Gargoyles Quest I + II are the Gameboy Games of this Series. Part II wasnt published in Europe sadly, so only Japanese...
Dude I played this a few months ago on the switch and thought exactly the same thing. I can’t believe I never played it before. It’s such a good game.
Hey man, there's also supposed to be a new Viking game in this kind of format that's going to be coming out later this month on the Nintendo Switch. You can take a look at it in the upcoming games section in the Nintendo Shop. That one looks interesting.
31:14 I'm starting to pray that you learn some upgrades before the end of this video. Firebrand has a killer move set
SNES: Secret of evermore - illusion of gaia - R-Type III - Donkey Kong Country 3 - Star Fox - Super Mario World 2 - Earthworm Jim 2 - Out of This World - Megaman X (and of course Zelda and Metroid)
NES: Gargoyle's quest 2 - Faxanadu - The immortal - Castlevania 3 - Ninja gaiden - Ducktales 2 - Megaman 1-6 - Contra
SEGA GENESIS: Alisia Dragoon - Wonder Boy in Monster World - Splatterhouse 2 - Rocket Knight Adventures - Castle of Illusion - Castlevania: Bloodlines - Beyond Oasis - Gunstar Heroes (Sonic of course)
Yes, more of this amazing game!! I'm so glad you're playing it!!
This is the third game of a trilogy, the first two games being Gargoyles Quest 1&2
This is a freaking GEM. Ryu is doing great on the oldies. I hope he plays donkey Kong country 3 soon
SHADOW OF THE NINJA ON THE NES THE SOUNDTRACK IS LEGENDARY
Play the hole game!!!! There are 3 or 4 different endings and 2 secret bosses.
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure for the Sega Genesis. Such an overlooked platformer that's full of charm and was one of my favorite games growing up.
I haven't played it either 😕 just got older, and time just went by 😢😊
9:24 lol. It looks like the fight ended after you hit his “weak spot “
