  • If you are looking at old vintage advertisements, or products like posters or t-shirts online, you might be wondering "'what font did they use?" In this video I do a short walkthrough on how you can use a free font-finding website called Font Squirrel. It's not perfect, but it is a free and easy way to find fonts that you can use for your next print-on-demand or digital product.

    Also take a look at "What The Font", and "What Font Is". Both are great tools!

      I use what the font pretty much every day in my job. Like it a bit more than font squirrel.
      And of course photoshop has a built in font detector that I usually start with.

      That's what I was going to say. Also recently WhatFontIs has been better than WhatTheFont at immediate detection. Best rule is to clean up the font in Photoshop before submitting.

    It helps when you type the words into the Font list so it displays the Fonts in the Words you're trying to match. Easier to determine which is the exact or closest match.

    Thanks for the information about matching fonts. It is quite useful if you are creating stylised and old graphic retro images as well as saving you time scouring for a match! You have two great channels which solve a lot of peoples problems with graphics and provide excellent solutions.

    I’m not a graphic designer, but I’ve been desperate to find a resource or ways to date or learn about vintage fonts I’ve been getting an accidental immersive education for the past 20 years of wearing loving collecting and reselling vintage items so I do have a good intuitive sense of dating clothing and accessories based on the manufacturing labels and their fonts I am intuitively noticing patterns, stylized shapes and graphic design elements from certain time periods to authenticate vintage items, but this is only from my own immersive education, I would love more of an education on what graphic design fonts were popular in what decades not just relying on my experience and intuition. I date garments based on not only the tags and the fonts on the labels , but also the zippers buttons, trim, fabric, sewing details. I smell and quality of the fabrication as well as the actual aesthetic of the garment. And knowing more about the fonts and which ones were used in which decades would help me immensely is there any other resources you could recommend where I could learn more in depth? I definitely am going to use the sites suggested because I think they could point me in the right direction where I could do some research if I could identify the font of a label and know its origin, and when it was popular that could also authenticate pieces, and narrow down their date of production

    Oof. That Font Squirrel matcher just seems to be throwing in random fonts that are nothing like the original. It would probably help to clean up the image first, but still... I find much better results from What The Font / What Font Is. I also use Identifont and the 'fonts by appearance' function.

  • @jackragan3521
    @jackragan3521 2 года назад +2

    Did I miss where you actually found either font? When font identifiers don’t recognize the letters of your text, how are you expecting decent results. Just because a font has a similar feel, it doesn’t mean that the each of the letters will even be remotely similar to what you are seeking. This video is poorly named and over appreciated. Too harsh? The harsh reality is that there are way better resources than font squirrel. With that being said, there are even ways to make font squirrel perform better.
