    My theory as to the reason why they parrot the word "whore" so much is because of potential sexual abuse committed by the Mount Massive Guards. During the abuse, it might have been what the guards called the varients (As well as the line slippery little whore line) It sounds like they're quoting someone rather than calling Miles that.
    The inmates could be saying it mockingly in a sort of revenge, to berate them before killing them. We know thanks to the Rick Trager lore comic that he used his power to assault a co-worker so what's not to say the guards did similar with vulnerable inmates.

    • @luciijacksm

      The patient who's bathing a corpse seems to be repeating the same things his abuser had said when he was molesting him under the pretense of washing. Whistleblower also has Eddie screaming about being raped and Waylon gets molested in the intro.

      @tinobemellow Год назад

      Jesus. They just had to bring that into it. It wasn't bad enough tearing heads off and cutting dicks off. They had to add sexual abuse. And in the second one, child murder.

  • @marianalacruz4890
    @marianalacruz4890 2 года назад +47

    Other thing, I have a theory. Most of the variants don't have pants on. I think it's related to the repeated Word "whore" by them throughout the Game. Maybe it's how the Murkoff employees called them because they connected wires for the Walrider experiment to the parients through many different places in their bodies and one of those places is their butts. That's why Eddie screams rape before being connected and why they don't wear pants. Because it's easier for the corporation to experiment with them

    • @mattmedrala1947
      @mattmedrala1947 2 года назад +18

      That's one reason. The engine experiment is in itself very intrusive and violating, and that's not getting into the implication of the Walrider being sexually aggressive in its dreams. Another is the grim reality of sexual abuse being very common in prisons due to the abusers seeing the prisoners as lessers and therefore deserving of mistreatment.

  • @L1z43vr
    @L1z43vr 3 года назад +149

    Just a thing here: The Walrider wasn’t a ghost or anything supernatural, according to the files and Miles’ notes, he was a swarm of Nanomachines, the patients thought it was a ghost, plus the Walrider is based on a real German Folklore called the “Alp”, Wenicke probably mentioned it somewhere and that’s where the patients got the idea of the name Walrider

    • @mattmedrala1947
      @mattmedrala1947 2 года назад +20

      I think the series actually blurs the line between scientific and supernatural. The Walrider is mentioned as having been materialized as early as 1938, various patients in the first game refer to the experiments as rituals/conjurings, and Outlast 2 delves even further into hinting that there might be some ancient Mesopotamian entity speaking out through the Morphogenic engine. Not to mention the obsession of this entity of being born from women.
      So it IS a nanoswarm conjured by mad science based on harvesting the mental energy of traumatized people, but that could simply be a way for a non-corporeal entity to take physical form.

    • @L1z43vr
      @L1z43vr 2 года назад +6

      @@mattmedrala1947 Well, I don’t really think it’s a supernatural being, since, as Wernicke said in Outlast 1: “Nothing is supernatural”, so it might be just a case of Science creating something that it can’t control

    • @mattmedrala1947
      @mattmedrala1947 2 года назад +6

      @@L1z43vr It's deliberately made vague, partly to be 'scary' and partly (IMO) to have a broader appeal to atheists and religious players alike. Far as I'm concerned, Wernicke might actually mean that 'nothing is supernatural' because everything to him can be explained by science and therefore is 'natural'. Keep in mind that the interviewer also claims that Wernicke said 'Project Walrider is a gateway', but we never hear Wernicke's answer on what that gateway is. Wernicke also claims that he let the nazis 'believe in an afterlife', but technically speaking the Walrider seems to be preserving the consciousness of its hosts so in a way THAT is an afterlife?
      I suspect it might involve psychic powers or some sort of parallel dimension. Outlast 2 is interesting to me because MOST of its supernatural events fit in a science-fiction context, but the strange 'flashbacks' that Blake experiences seem to integrate details that I think might actually be memories from the dead Jessica and the unaccounted-for priest. I suspect the upcoming prequel game will go further into exploring this theme of unlocking psychic powers through experimentation.

    • @L1z43vr
      @L1z43vr 2 года назад +1

      @@mattmedrala1947 Actually, if I got my Outlast Lore right, Blake’s flashbacks are actually hallucinations caused by the towers, same thing with Lynn’s pregnancy, it was a phantom pregnancy, like the ones caused by the Morphogenic Engine (Aka the reason why they don’t have women in Mount Massive), they aren’t some sort of entity trying to show him memories of his dead friend or him going to another dimension, they explain this by putting a VERY hidden note in the game, making Blake make a missable remark, and explain it more clearly in _extended universe material_ which, in my opinion, is kinda bad. But yeah, Outlast 2 also has a scientific explanation to what is happening, and it’s Microwave Towers

    • @mattmedrala1947
      @mattmedrala1947 2 года назад +2

      @@L1z43vr I agree about Outlast 2 doing a pretty bad job as a self contained narrative. However, I'm just saying that the series overall likes to play with the ambiguity of what's 'real' and what's delusional. The variants in Outlast 1 actually aren't saying gibberish but are giving hints as to the true scope of what's happening, and the scientists died for not taking their warnings seriously. The Walrider itself personifies the potential for beliefs to shape reality, since it draws its power from the patients worshiping it. I believe the same applies to Templegate, where the cultists' belief in God is exacerbated by the microwave towers and ends up creating their own version of a deity. Don't forget that the blind dreamers in Whistleblower are implied to have psychic powers, so that's something the series is willing to play with.
      So I personally think that the 'visions' that we see in Outlast 2 might actually be activating some psychic potential in Blake, and that manifests in ways such as Loutermilch's thoughts inexplicably appearing in the static recordings, Jessica acting as a 'guardian angel'...and yes, the Morphogenic engine impregnating women would imply something wants to be born.
      I also believe this is one of Murkoff's goals in the Outlast Trials: to find a way to unlock psychic potential in people through trauma, drugs, and electricity, and to make them hosts for paranormal entities. The majority of people affected by the treatment go mad and die, but a select few who are able to 'outlast' this process unlock incredible power as we saw in Miles. The Morphogenic engine is just one way to generate this process, the radio towers are a means to broadcast this across a larger population, and I'm sure Murkoff is trying to find a way to control the entire world...

    I remember seeing a play through of this game, and I had nightmares. Nightmares plagued with the faces of these variants, them screaming for help. I was a variant, too, with only three fingers on each hand, and each foot. “Six fingers, six toes, six holes. Six six six.” This quote ran through my mind, I dunno why. I fought, and I studied the variants. The screams and cries, those nightmares scared the hell out of me. It reminded me of the documentaries featuring MK Ultra survivors, or survivors of the Holocaust or cults. Quotes about going to the next stage, the “final solution”, those quotes haunted me in those nightmares. When I woke up, I was in a cold sweat, and I was scared to go back to sleep. This game scared the piss out of me, and brought out some of the worst memories from documentaries I watched, horror movies I thought didn’t phase me, but turns out they effected me more than I thought.

    I think you should do a video on the twins next. Also one of the best things about Outlast is the antagonists. Red barrels really succeeded in giving us some scary and memorable villains. Chris Walker is most certainly my favourite out of all of them, he's like nemesis from resident evil 3.

  • @ue8dh2

    This gives much more depth to the game. All this suffering and pain inside this damned hospital for many years. This could be happening out there somewhere without anybody knowing about it(not the wallrider bullshit) but torturing patients is definitely happening.

    Y’know, it is possible that some Variants survived and got sent back to their cells. Obviously, the PMCs wanted to silence anyone who could expose Murkoff, even if that meant killing staff, but a Variant who’s locked up can’t say anything. Also consider that several Variants remained in their cells during the whole incident, so there wouldn’t be any reason for them to die.

      In the comics they claim the fatality rate was 100%, and Murkoff is ruthless enough to treat anyone as disposable. Just like Chris, they'd want to eliminate the patients so that there's no chance of the Walrider possessing them.

    4:42 I think he’s actually saying “Long time dead.” At the time of the game, Wernicke had officially been dead for four years, although he wasn’t actually dead. It’s possible that some Variants actually saw him when they were being experimented on, hence why some refer to him as being alive or still doing experiments.

    This is one of the few games where it really makes you feel for each individual character when it comes to the variants. Not just the tragic backstory of the main variants like walker or gluskin, but especially the nameless ones. You see each of them in pain, suffering, and in complete mental imprisonment. The ones not trying to hurt me I genuinely would always want to help.

    These guys were WILD but I liked em.
    Especially when they were just in a small group just doing some activities. In whistle-blower they're playing shirts and skins basketball, or just having a rage room session with a doctor, in the base game when they're just worshipping with father Martin, and that one room where they're just watching television static- just chillin, waiting for the end.

    I like to think that the violent ones were killers or criminals in his past,the pacific ones are just people that were mentally deranged and the crying and suffering variants were murkoff workers or periodist that had to be "punished"

  • @MistarZtv

    If they got Paul to work for them to pay for treatment for his daughter than its probably pretty common for murkoff to find people to put into the programs too.

    Could that Jennifer be Jennifer Roland? A minor character that shows up in the documents in both Outlast 1(Variant Postmorteu) and Outlast 2(Old traveler). A Murkoff executive I'm guessing. Could it be that the patient she talks about in her document "My fourteenth autopsy of a Walrider patient, showing no more signs of accepting the therapy than any of the others" and "Will submit another request to leave [...] Is more than I feel like I can handle" is that variant?
    Could it be that Jenny Roland was trying to get that patient to accept the Walrider and in the middle of it all had given up on him? Is that what he means by we didn't finish last time?

    • @mattmedrala1947
      @mattmedrala1947 2 года назад

      Wouldn't that mean he's a ghost? Also, it's interesting to note that she disagrees with Wernicke's method and suggests some alternative 'mechanical engine based on major sperm protein', and she's involved in the experiments involving the mass pregnancies and infanticide at Templegate. Feel like to some extent Murkoff is trying to provoke the birth of a supernatural entity, and Jenny is complicit in this.
