As someone who grew up with one older sister and a smattering of mostly girl cousins, Petz Horsez reminds me a lot of those Barbie games on the PlayStation where there's really corny dialogue and seemingly shoehorned-in adventure game mechanics. I should clarify that my upbringing around these games makes them 100% a guilty pleasure of mine! I think a lot of these girls games at the time were taking pages from the Nancy Drew PC games from Her Interactive during this time (sorta 1998-2006), which is also not a bad thing at all as those games were all pretty fantastic for people who wanted a Myst-like Adventure game. And the parallels continue: plots that were more involved than they needed to be, this sense of corniness to the entire presentation where you can tell the devs were just having fun with it all.
Because of how much less of a trend it is for every little license to get given out for the inevitable shovelware-like games to be made, the industry doesn't really make games like this anymore and it's a shame! Also sooo many heartland-centric similes and metaphors (And yes I did *get the reference), you can't keep getting away with this💀🤣
That's so cool you had exposure to these types of games while growing up! I feel like I've played a lot of the games that you mentioned, like the Nancy Drew PC games and the Barbie games. It's just difficult to remember them all, especially since I was so young when I played most of them. XD Don't get me wrong, I loved playing the "macho" bestseller games with my brother while growing up, but I definitely had a deeper connection to the more female-centric games. It's a shame those types of games weren't given any serious attention back in the day. They were all mostly low quality when they probably could've been a lot more with a better budget. That's why I always find it funny whenever I see these huge budget games featuring female protagonists now. Like Stellar Blade, Gravity Rush, or heck! Even the newer Tomb Raider games where the focus of Lara's character isn't on her boobs lol. It's a nice thing to see as a female gamer, that's for sure. :)
Couldn't agree more! Shovelware games definitely brought more variety to the table when it came to video game selection. It stocked shelves too at Gamestop and local video game stores. I miss seeing them, but I'm fortunate enough to live nearby several family owned video game stores, so I can take a walk down memory lane whenever I like, haha! :D Ayyy! You got the reference! I'm gonna try and keep getting away with it as much as I can. ;D
Great video; lots of laughs in this one. Interesting to see, too, that this one has a lot more to it than you'd expect; it does happen once in a while, but it's hard to find. Thank you for taking me on this journey!
