Farmers claim 'EU ignores us completely' as protest blocks highway in Malaga

Dozens of farmers and tractors blocked the A-357 motorway in both directions in Malaga province on Thursday to protest against 'uncontrolled' imports into the Spanish market as well as EU green policies they claim are destroying the sector.
"The European Union ignores us completely. They have their agreements made. What prevails are the solar gardens and it seems that agriculture gets in their way," said a farmer Cristobal Montilla.
Farmer and UPA secretary general Francisco Moscoso claimed that products from other countries are imported to Spain without proper oversight, driving down local prices.
"Our products are thrown on the ground and products from outside are brought in without food control. This is devastating for us," explained Jose Angel Lanza, another protester.
According to local media reports, the next protest is scheduled for March 13 and will be held in front of the government sub-delegation in Malaga.
Tractor protests and blockades of major highways have been seen across Europe in recent months, with thousands of farmers taking part across France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, and Greece, among other countries.
Central issues include high production costs, tax hikes, red tape, fuel costs, EU-wide green regulations, and cheap imports from countries outside the bloc, such as Ukraine and Morocco.
