Wanting to get out of town at least once this summer, during August my wife and I spent a few days in the coastal town of Astoria, Oregon, a town rich in history of various types. As I have often done, I put together a video on our vacation, but with a little added historical bend by comparison to previous videos.
I show the various museums we visited as well as filming locations and the places we ate at among other ventures we went on.
I am so grateful to you Steve for making this beautiful video of my home Astoria, Oregon.
You really knocked it out of the park this time!!
Thank you Steve!!😊
This was so much fun to watch! Thank you for sharing your vacation with us! Great video Steve!
When in Astoria, I always have to stop at the Bowpicker for the best fish and chips on earth!
hell yeah havent been there in a few years
I have literally made a day trip from Portland just for some Bowpicker.
The bird is a Cormorant.
7:45 that's a rail switch, there must've been a nearby siding, maybe at the free candy building?
Thanks, glad you two had fun, I must visit. CG
Thanks for the tour! We are headed to Astoria next week ourselves, so now we have a heads up on what to see! 👍🏻🙌🏻🍻
18:27 ammonia was (and still is) used as a refrigerant, now it's mostly CFCs.
Another Goonies film.location was the coffee roaster on the east side on the right as your heading out of town east bound...there's a vending machine outside if the place is closes with bags of coffee...Try the Goondocks blend! 😉😉😁
I love the Flavel House. One of the coolest museums ive ever seen
I'm needing a whole tuna, so I'm probably heading to Astoria within the next few days.
I make sushi and sashimi once or twice each week, and I've got a pretty varied shopping list that can only be filled on the north coast (if I want 'sushi grade' seafood).
I might take a northern detour at the bridge and get myself a bunch of Washington oysters while I'm there.
*I LOVE OREGON!* _(except the politics...which I ABSOLUTELY HATE)_
That last place was a great restaurant! It had a Scandinavian theme. Always visited ehen i went to Astoria after the Pacific Rim restaurant burned down.
Ships have to make the 103 mile trip from the mouth of thr Columbia to Kelly Point and the port of Portland.
Got a 1923 American LaFrance Fire engine from Astoria looking for pictures of it, let me know if you run across any, thank you! Ps, just drove thru Marshfield the other day thinking about your Spanish war treasure video, don’t know how they got around back in the day; hard work!
You wife is right. The restaurant, Stephanie’s Cabin, closed sometime around 2016. It was a great place. Had that real local vibe with regulars sitting in the same booths every time they visited. Unfortunately, it couldn’t compete with the trendy new Astoria places. I miss the place.
Thanks for sharing your amaziing vacation. 🦭🦀🦞🐦⬛🦌
I live just across the river in Long Beach. You caught all the sights that most people visit. The gargoyles outside the gate in a private rental getaway at Ledbetter Point on the Peninsula. It's an amazing venue to see if you get lucky and get a a tour. Next time around, stop by Washington State's oldest continuously operational hotel, the Shelburne Hotel in Seaview. It's worth a stay! Maybe we'll cross paths as well.
I miss Stephanie's Cabin so much! We used to go there all the time. So homey, wonderful views from the back room. I felt so wistful when you peeked in and everything looked like it was just abandoned one day and never opened again. I can hardly believe the town can only support ONE family diner (Pig N Pancake). Back when there were a few family restaurants they were ALL packed. Now it's all overpriced brewpubs. Anyway, I'm surprised you couldn't make it up 15th to show the "other" Flavel house. It's only a few blocks up from where you walked along on the riverwalk. So many beautiful Victorians to look at in that neighborhood.
Really enjoyed this Steve, Astoria is definitely a really cool and beautiful place and is what I would consider the gateway to the Oregon Coast at least on that corner of the state
I have had many ventures to the Oregon coast over a lot of years and had actually stayed in that very Hotel you guys were at.
I remember the old Bumble Bee cannery when it was still in existence about 30 years ago, precariously hanging on, half standing and a great portion of the structure had already at that time become very neglected and was literally falling into the Bay, it is a shame that it wasn’t preserved for its historical context .
As always I appreciate you taking us all on these mini adventures, this one was a little different and I got to learn a few things about Astoria that I didn’t know….
I was there when you were filming this
There's actually a rather large heard of elk that hang out in the Warrenton area across the bay bridge.
Love your videos.
I have friends in Astoria. Time to visit! 😉🌹
The ship inn was a great old sea food restaurant ate there often, so sad Astoria lost it
Thanks for sharing your vacation with us. Be sure to write off the whole trip on your taxes.
Good one.
At the beginning of Short Circuit, they show Ally Sheady going out onto the deck, drinking her coffee as the sun comes up over the bridge. Problem is, thats facing West, and is in reality a sunSET, not a sunrise.
My dad worked on the road crew building that bridge
WOW!
