No audio from the iPad speakers is wild. They're really loud too as you said. Hopefully that's one of their first updates after its finally released. Thanks for the video
The iPad works amazingly the box came a little dirty, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA no plastic wrap, but the box was sealed and had everything else in the box along with the wrapping, the iPad itself is gorgeous, I got the yellow 64g game storage is good for me along with Socials and school stuff. No scratches or marks came with the charger and box fast speed, and if you are buying a pen get the 1st gen don’t make the mistake I did !!
Hi Fernando, great video with lots of details. I wrote earlier indicating that AirPlay is disabled if you attach an external monitor. I would have thought you would have mentioned that when talking about audio sources. AirPlay actually did work for me with an external display in iPadOS 16.0 or 16.1, but not any more. Also, I have a 32” 4K monitor, and the external display actually shows 5 groups of apps rather than just 4 in the app tray on the left side. Have you or other viewers also found this? This carried over into the RC version that I’m currently using, so I don’t think it’s just a fluke any more. Keep up the great videos. Always informative.

I'm totally digging this. And I think this is the best video I've seen reviewing it's external monitor support potential. iPad is finally becoming the professional tool that was promised 6 years ago with the iPad Pro. Speaking of which... During the video I was thinking "I'm a creative and I can't.... Wait....". Capture One, while not a full version, runs many of the same features as the desktop. DaVinci Resolve.... The only thing that still doesn't work for photographers: Photoshop. But for work where I don't need Photoshop, this could be really awesome. I could be in a hotel room, connect the iPad to the TV and have a totally great setup for work on the road. Great job!
Oh whoa, I didn't realize you were filming this with your phone. That's quite impressive actually. Having great lighting makes some awesome results when using the iPhone.
I’ve tested an audio interface with a hub connected to my iPad and external display, and you can definitely route the audio to either interface or hdmi. You can route audio using Control Center.
which hub did you test? I can only route my audio to my USB-C display or a BT device in Control Center. it would be nice if I had an option for "This iPad" as I agree my iPadPro speakers sound so much better than my monitor speakers!
@@chinarutthere is an option which says exactly that. It can be accessed via the now playing widget in the control panel. On that widget there is an icon(don’t know what it’s called) in the top right corner through which you can select the option of “iPad “ Edit: oh well...the option was available and I used it until the recent update...I was on the beta branch...but it seems in the current update the option has disappeared...

🐬Thanks for the update. I’m using a 5th gen iPad Air. I still find I use my MacBook Air M2 with 2 external 4K monitors for productivity work - such as taxes and business invoicing and Parallels with Windows 11 for Windows-only apps. The iPad is really nice with Stage Manager, but Mac OS is still easier to work with when using a mouse and multitasking. I’m using a Plugable USB 3.0 and USB-C Dual 4K Display Docking Station with DisplayPort and HDMI to get 2 - 4K displays with the M2 Air. The iPad works great as a side-device that can be controlled by the same keyboard and mouse, yet runs iPad OS. I’ve found that is the best way to use it - together with MacOS.😊
I got a iPad Air 5 just for this reason and so far it’s been an amazing experience. I can deal with the iOS limitations because most of my workflow can be done on a iPad, and with the air getting the M1 and I heard it was having external monitor support, I had to get it. Or get a pro if you want, either way in a lot of ways the M series iPads are looking much more like a laptop-tablet replacement.
@@fresco_dinero5155 thanks man. I did tried that. The Ipad can see my Samsung 4k monitor but there was no option to choose between mirror and extended. Maybe it is something wrong with my air 5. Can you confirm that you can choose with your Air 5?
As a 2020 iPad owner I’m sad that this isn’t a function for us! I’m a daily iPad user and this is my main machine. To take away that functionality from people who sent a good junk of change to get this setup is criminal, but its apple so I can guess nothing less of them.
Are you enjoying Da Vinci Resolve, Affinity Designer, Publisher and Photo, and using all of the incredible free built in applications and suites of exclusive powerful apps?

It sounds great. However, I moved from a larger ipad to an ipad mini and absolutely love it. I'm going to go for a Macbook Air to use as more of a laptop as it does what I need, I love the form factor and the length of updates and sturdiness make it a long term device (like my other Apple devices). Though still happily using an LG v60 (quad dac and 3.5mm headphone socket and sd card slot!) and Windows surfacebook (nice but doesn't integrate so well with things I want, some of it more of an issue with Windows).
I ended up using stage manager on iPad and mac. I like it putting away windows when I open something new, and bringing it back when I put that away. And I can pull in a second app on the rare occasion I want 2 at once. Multi window is more the exception that I would have guessed in the past.
I just recently upgraded from iPad Air fourth generation to iPad Air fifth generation. I did it as part of my work, so I don’t have to port a laptop computer back-and-forth between my office and home. I can use my iPad now as a computer at home… Because I don’t really do much that needs full computing power at home. I primarily use the cloud, do online meetings, and use it for entertainment. I don’t need a full computer at home. I upgraded to fifth generation so that I can get stage manager and use it essentially like a computer much better than I could with my fourth generation iPad Air.
Great video Fernando, I use the iPad as my "Main" computer when at home. Would love to use it at work as well, but being an I.T guy, I still have to use Winblows, oops I mean Windows for formatting of drives (I wish the iPad could do that), connecting to serial ports of network switches, and doing FTP transfers, etc... So I can't not have a Windows computer. It's a shame as I love the computing experience of the iPad.

I love that external display support is here now. Hope they will really focus on it. I want to be able to set the audio source to iPad when connected to a monitor with speakers (since monitor speakers suck) Also some apps are a bit “chunky” or playmobil feeling on my 3440x1440 ultra wide external display, if we could get a bit more density “more space” setting for externals it would help Lastly I really want full external display support in the Microsoft Remote Desktop app, but this is on Microsoft to sort, their app won’t go full screen on an external unless it happens to match a supported resolution from a small list (which are all iPad resolutions today obviously)
I’m using the HP Thunderbolt dock with built in speaker to connect to the external monitor that lacks speakers. It is working very well but I had to change the TB cable.

🐬 I have both the M1 iPad Air and the M2 12.9 iPad Pro. I just returned the M2 MBA because the iPads are plenty computers for me. However, I do own the HP Spectre 360. But I’m not a power user by any means.
I still have a 14 inch MacBook Pro, due to some limitations from iPad. I can literally do 95% of my work on iPad. Just waiting for that multiple audio feature and a rollout of Final Cut. The DaVinci Resolve beta videos are so impressive!!!

For those having trouble it seems that since 16.4 there is limitation/bug that requires you to use monitors with certain resolution… Also important to remember or extending screen to second monitor you NEED to have both mouse and keyboard connected I am not an expert but I use iPad Air M1, Satechi usb-c hub, Logitech MX keyboard and mouse, an old fujicom 1920 x 1080 22”
Great video, I can definitely see where this iOS stuff is going. Samsung has a pretty similar system called DEX with their flagship phones which you an run from your phone (wireless or wired) to a 4k monitor. Then your phone acts like a Chromebook, kind of. Would be great too see one of those comparison videos
Being a UX designer, I use on a daily basis Sketch and Figma, and still (as far as I know) there are no versions for iPad OS... unfortunately. But I am looking forward to seeing them.

I didn't connect a mouse nor a keyboard and it still have Extended Monitor support. If you don't connect a mouse or a keyboard, then you have to adjust it in the settings.

No, and via safari I cannot go up to 720p quality (don’t know why..). Yes, you can play audio via hdmi but only with that… if you want to change your audio output you need to disconnect the cable ahah

thanks for watching! to answer your first question, yes you can! When you take a screenshot it will take a screenshot of both the iPad screen and the extended monitor. For the speakers, unfortunately there is no way to use the iPad speakers. if your monitor does not have speakers then you need to connect to a bluetooth speaker or headphones.
I'm just happy I won't have to sell my wonderful 24 inch 4K monitor when I upgrade. Don't care about the speaker part because I use a HomePod mini on my desk for all audio output from Apple devices. That being said, this audio issue has always been there with iPad and external monitors, even when it only supported mirror mode, you could only select Airplay and Bluetooth devices for audio output but not iPad speakers when plugged in to monitor - even if the monitor had no speakers.
How do you get this to work with a display that does not have thunderbolt video or USB-C? I tried with my ipad pro M1 and an anker hub with HDMI and all I got was the screen to replicate but not to actually extend the screen. I also connected a USB keyboard to the anker hub and a bluetooth mouse. I have IOS 16.1.1
I got so excited about this new feature after getting a 3rd gen M1 11" iPad pro and thought it'd be perfect for note-taking, but the user experience so far is absolutely terrible. I use OneNote on my iPad and Book/Chrome on the extended monitor, it's so laggy and the bugs are unbearable, still a long way to go for Apple to make this feature stable and more inclusive. Anyone having the same issue?

Honestly, OneNote is a great app from Microsoft but it’s badly implemented on the iPad and trying to use OneNote on a Surface Go 2 is also not great. Microsoft is slowly fixing OneNote but it’s just a buggy app in general.

I wonder if you can only use the external monitor while keeping the iPad's built in screen off. For example, I just wanna use the Pad as a TV box to watch some long videos on a bigger screen such as my TV/my 4K monitor at times. I hope I won't have to keep the Pad's screen always on in order to use the external monitor.
I really consider making the switch from PC to iPAD pro(cheapest with LiDAR) probably there is a powered dock so you can hook the monitor and USB keyboard/mouse (wireless must recharge) plusses are: portability, better power (RISC vs x86), LiDAR, probably can develop iOS/iPAD apps wonder if remote will work fine in safari (guacamole)
My monitor has HDMI but no speakers. I use a CalDigit SOHO dock for USB C to HDMI. I do get audio from the iPad speakers in extended display mode, irrespective of whether the video is on the iPad or extended display. Originally I got no audio output when I tried to use my original USB C to HDMI dongle.

I really hope they add external webcam support. At least for the studio display
I use it with a 21:9 fullhd monitor and it is perfectly usable, so dont worry about resolution that much

To make it more computer. Apple should allow the iPad screen to go to sleep. And you could use the external monitor alone. It would make a difference

I'm on an 2019 iPad air and moving on to more options using a monitor would be very useful for me, so the M1iPad Air might be my next device.

Games need to start supporting multitasking. This would allow you to use them in full screen.

Audio airplay works if you connect it before you connect the usb-c monitor

Great video, I can definitely see where this iOS stuff is going. Samsung has a pretty similar system called DEX with their flagship phones which you an run from your phone (wireless or wired) to a 4k monitor. Then your phone acts like a Chromebook, kind of. Would be great too see one of those comparison videos

I find the extended display does not work unless you're connected to a mouse AND a keyboard.
Being a UX designer, I use on a daily basis Sketch and Figma, and still (as far as I know) there are no versions for iPad OS... unfortunately. But I am looking forward to seeing them.

I didn't connect a mouse nor a keyboard and it still have Extended Monitor support. If you don't connect a mouse or a keyboard, then you have to adjust it in the settings.

No, and via safari I cannot go up to 720p quality (don’t know why..). Yes, you can play audio via hdmi but only with that… if you want to change your audio output you need to disconnect the cable ahah

thanks for watching! to answer your first question, yes you can! When you take a screenshot it will take a screenshot of both the iPad screen and the extended monitor. For the speakers, unfortunately there is no way to use the iPad speakers. if your monitor does not have speakers then you need to connect to a bluetooth speaker or headphones.
I'm just happy I won't have to sell my wonderful 24 inch 4K monitor when I upgrade. Don't care about the speaker part because I use a HomePod mini on my desk for all audio output from Apple devices. That being said, this audio issue has always been there with iPad and external monitors, even when it only supported mirror mode, you could only select Airplay and Bluetooth devices for audio output but not iPad speakers when plugged in to monitor - even if the monitor had no speakers.
Tried doing this with my Lenovo laptop and not a monitor but I’m unable to. I don’t even see displays under display, is this coz I’m using a laptop?

How do you get this to work with a display that does not have thunderbolt video or USB-C? I tried with my ipad pro M1 and an anker hub with HDMI and all I got was the screen to replicate but not to actually extend the screen. I also connected a USB keyboard to the anker hub and a bluetooth mouse. I have IOS 16.1.1
simply update your system to iPadOS 16.2, 16.1 only supports screen miroring
I got so excited about this new feature after getting a 3rd gen M1 11" iPad pro and thought it'd be perfect for note-taking, but the user experience so far is absolutely terrible. I use OneNote on my iPad and Book/Chrome on the extended monitor, it's so laggy and the bugs are unbearable, still a long way to go for Apple to make this feature stable and more inclusive. Anyone having the same issue?

Honestly, OneNote is a great app from Microsoft but it’s badly implemented on the iPad and trying to use OneNote on a Surface Go 2 is also not great. Microsoft is slowly fixing OneNote but it’s just a buggy app in general.

I wonder if you can only use the external monitor while keeping the iPad's built in screen off. For example, I just wanna use the Pad as a TV box to watch some long videos on a bigger screen such as my TV/my 4K monitor at times. I hope I won't have to keep the Pad's screen always on in order to use the external monitor.

I really consider making the switch from PC to iPAD pro(cheapest with LiDAR)
probably there is a powered dock so you can hook the monitor and USB keyboard/mouse (wireless must recharge)
plusses are: portability, better power (RISC vs x86), LiDAR, probably can develop iOS/iPAD apps
wonder if remote will work fine in safari (guacamole)
My monitor has HDMI but no speakers. I use a CalDigit SOHO dock for USB C to HDMI. I do get audio from the iPad speakers in extended display mode, irrespective of whether the video is on the iPad or extended display. Originally I got no audio output when I tried to use my original USB C to HDMI dongle.
What dock are you using in this video? Curious what your plugging into.
