I’m a full time M1 iPad Pro user. And with my Kensington StudioDock and a 32” 4K monitor I am SO HAPPY. I’m an accountant who travels a lot and my iPad Pro is powerful enough to work and unbeatably mobile. Well done Apple.
What 32“ 4k monitor brand/model do you have? 😳
What apps do you use as an accountant?
I thought that an accountant might need full access to apps like Desktop Version of MS Excel which is sadly not available for iPad OS.
@@singhkrishanu yeah. Big problem for me. iPad excel is still missing way too many features.
@@StefanWolfrum probably samsung monitor m7?
Totally agree with the monitor speaker issue. I’ve been fighting with it using a bluetooth external speaker.
Hugely excited, and watched this on an external display to celebrate. I’m commenting on my phone, which prompts one of my key takeaways- a lot of apps are really broken right now and random things won’t behave. Hopefully that normalises. Also looking forward to seeing what happens with games- the extra screen space could do some cool things.
Thanks for sharing. This is a nice feature. Blessings on your day!
Used it couple of weeks ago while working out of town and it was a great experience. Mainly browser based safari work.
Downloading 16.2 as I type. Can't wait! Thanks for the video Chris! 👍🙏
That’s awesome!
About freaking time! I found it ridiculous that my $2000 M1 iPad Pro, couldn't output a full display, when my inexpensive Chromebook Duet 5 could with no problem. So I've been using the chromebook for desktop setup... Going to finally swap them out finally!
Wow you just reminded me today 16.2 came out. Downloading now!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks and congrats for your job!!!
I’m Happy with the progress Apple has made to get us external monitor support / a mouse cursor, but I wish the cursor wasn’t a circle…..
The day my M1 iPad and I have waited for is finally here! Thanks for all the warnings. The audio output issue really is a bummer, wrestling audio from my dinky (for now) external monitor so it can properly come out of my Bluetooth speakers is … vexing and weird.
I use a 24 inch Smart TV as an external display. This has provided an adequately decent audio output for me.
As an M1 pro user, with the external monitor support, an almost full davinci resolve, freeform, I’ve never been happier about an apple purchase
Ahhhh it would be amazing if this worked on the iPad Mini. That little sucker is such a sweet productivity weapon. If there were a Pro version of it with extra features like this, I’d certainly trade up.
Laughing on my Surface pro 8 with 2 plugged 4K Monitors - and good Yamaha hifi sound
So sad, i hope they just take the stage manager away from the 2020 ipads and just give us the external monitor support instead. So much more useful than stage manager... :(
Great Video as always!
Great video I was watching the part where you said you want to be able to close the iPad with the keyboard and just use the display connected. This is already available if you turn on in settings always on display like it doesn’t fall asleep then you can just close the case but the iPad will still be turned on. If you do this then you can just use the monitor as the main one or set up in settings to where the monitor is mirroring the iPad completely and you can use it just like that in clam shell way whatever way you say clam shell.
Just realized that you can’t mirror the display and use the second display as the main one but you can just in settings under display and brightness turn off lock/unlock so that when you close the lid it stays on the display.
It would be so nice if you would make a step-by-step video. Easy explained, like: "First, buy this or this; then, connect this here" and so on... Like normal people talk.
Thank you for the review … and we wish this to be on iPhone too
I was expecting that the external monitor support worked even when the display of the iPad is off but sadly that's not the case. Disappointed that Apple didn't think this through. Please give us clampshell mode for iPad Apple.
Very informative vid. I bought m1 mb air and my current monitor can’t scale it properly. So I should find some alternative to Apple Studio Monitor because it is pricey.
You can use any monitor but the only ones that work well with scaling are the 4K non-Ultrawide ones!
Great review, thanks. How do video calls work (Zoom, FaceTime etc.)? That is, can you use the external monitors webcam or another external webcam? Or does one still have to use the iPad camera for video conference / calls?
Hi Good morning !! Your video is excellent & very informative. Can you let me know how locate the "File' menu in the Ipad Air 5. Thank you.
Hello, I’m a M1 ipad pro user who is using it with the LG Ultrafine 5k monitor. I’m also very dissatisfied with the audio default settings you pointed out. 6:19 So I‘m trying to make an customized automation on my iPad, so I’m wondering if there‘s a shortcut that can load it as a variable whether the external monitor is connected or not. Then I will be able to automate my iPad so that I can choose whether listen to the sound with the AirPods or listen to the LG Ultrafine 5k monitor when an external monitor is connected to my iPad. (When it’s finished, I‘ll post it as a link in the comments.)
Nice job
Hey curious how the iPad works with external drives. Thinking of getting an iPad Pro as a MacBook replacement but I do have several external drives I always use. Any insights on this would be appreciated!
What I think this enables for many folks is the ability to shift to an iPad exclusively for personal use. I have a Thunderbolt Windows laptop that I use for work, and a docking station that I use with it. At the end of the day if I need to type up personal documents, I can now just unplug my work laptop, plug in my iPad, and have a big screen and nice keyboard for those personal items. The versatility of being able to use the same station for your work device and your personal device is going to be really nice.
Thanks for the explainer for audio output devices, I hadn't understood that, but is there a similar option for audio in?
Yeah the audio in device is just the last connected device plugged in or paired. So if it isn’t what you want you have to either unplug it or power it off and then reconnect it.

For Zoom calls, this camera would it use? I have a Studio Display as well as would want that to be the camera but I'm assuming the iPads camera is the default?! Great video as always
I honestly refuse to believe the 2018/2020 iPad Pro's can't support this considering the A12Z was what was driving the initial Apple Silicon Transition Dev Kit. Like you're telling me it can handle macOS but not iPadOS???
I guess the main issue is RAM as external monitor use requires Stage Manager and thus has to support 8 open apps simultaneously which might cause problems in edge cases on iOS devices with low amounts of memory. I think it’s highly likely there wouldn’t be a problem if you could use external monitors without stage manager or a “monitor only mode”/clamshell mode with stage manager. There’s pretty much only UX reasons why they don’t want to implement something like this, I’m pretty sure Craig Federighi pretty much outright stated so.
@@kekchanbiggestfan a 4gb ram laptop from 2015 can run many apps at the same time. its not hardware problem its the software.
Very interesting video and thanks for showing how it works. However, you mentioned that you can easily unplug just one cable and switch from iPad to MacBook: I was wondering, why would I use iPad at all if I have a MacBook? I do use my iPad on the go, but at home I always plug in my laptop just because it is as easy to have on the desk and it is definitely more powerful.
yes !
i can finally do this now that i downloaded iPadOs 16.2 but i'm wondering, is this also possible with the ipad screen off ?
Which iPad stand do you use on your desk? That looks awesome.
Can do a video the minute that iPad has control over the audio when using hdmi (I noticed it even did it using the serial port) if iOS is updated please. I’ve selected the bell notification
Thanks for the review... how did you get your external monitor to be on your "left" I can only get my external monitor to be "above" my ipad?
I am still dissapointed that the 2020 ipad Pros can't run external monitors. However I will say the ability to have the audio now play on the connected monitor or TV without having to use bluetooth speakers is appreciated. I was suprised by this when I plugged my ipad pro into my TV last week and it's a welcomed improvement. However, can't say enough how disappointing it is that the 2018 and 2020 ipad pros can't have true external monitor support.
I am beyond pissed at them I want like an official explanation the iPad Pro can handle it especially if the air models are the M1 chip is not that large of a leap at all
@@evanwilliams3088 unofficial explanation: pay more
This is has been part of iPad for a long time now
I’m still using 2018 Ipad pro
I have a 32:9 monitor, and I’ve only been able to get it to give me a 16:9 picture on my external display. Hopefully we can have more resolutions/aspect ratios supported with a later update-I had seen videos of people during the 16.0 beta period of people using a 21:9 monitor with it.
The picture quality is markedly better over Thunderbolt than over HDMI, but that’s the same as it was when mirroring before.
In another channel he used a 49" monitor just fine. He mentioned however that it only worked over Displayport.
My 21:9 works
So I have been using this for about a week now (Beta). Has some glitches, but for sure heading in the right direction. The one thing that is super frustrating to me is that my HomePod cannot play sound. It says that it will not work on in “Extended Display”. However, I can play Music, Podcast, etc. Just not RUclips 🤷♂️. All in all……Game Changer 💯 Thanks for your Content!
Yeah that’s annoying. I just use mine for podcast and music because there has been Bluetooth delay issues with video in the past.
@@ChrisLawley True! So…..I found a work around ☺️ Unplug your Hub totally from iPad. Open up RUclips on iPad and play….choose the HomePod, then, plug it back in and let it extend display, viola!!! Hope that helps 👍🏼
That’s too much of a hassle. I’ll file some feedback tomorrow on this.
M4 iPad Pro allows to choose iPad as speakers now
Yes! Finally…
I was wondering if it’s safe to use a type-c hub on iPad. I’m planning to get a Kingston Nucleum. Would you recommend it?
I love that the iPad acting just as a display needs an M1 when sidecar was working with much less.
Hi. What’s the stand for iPad Pro in this video? I couldn’t find it on your Amazon lists.
Thanks for the Stage Mgr., info. I have an older monitor Dynex brand actually. I connect my M1 iPad Pro to the Dynex but nothing happens on the Dynex monitor. I am using a Zagg keyboard case for my M1 iPad Pro so I have the keyboard. I am seeing the little blue icon on the top right of my M1 iPad Pro so it is recognizing the plugin to the external monitor. I do have a Bluetooth mouse -would it need to be paired with the Dynex monitor for my setup to work? Many thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.
Question: I am thinking about getting an iPad for college. Can I use extended view on my monitor with my pdf sheets open while I solve problem exercises with the Pencil on the ipad laying on my desk (in other words, can I use extended view to browse files and the web while using it as a notebook for notetaking?)
Now only if they could get the screen mirroring to ipad from macbook working consistently!
Man, this is legit! it's too bad I can't afford the iPad Pro however ...
Was super excited for this but it looks like is doesn’t support the resolution of my 4k ultrawide monitor, everything is massive.
Buggy a bit. Especially with video call apps. Video call apps think you’re in portrait mode if you put the app on the external display.
I have a similar setup, I am using a 4k Samsung 42" TV, and it works great. But I can't figure out how to increase text size on the windows they look tiny and can't change the size. Any recommendations?
Thank you for the video! Does Anyone knwo if you can turn off the mirroring as standard? If I reconnect my dock the Ipad always launches the monitor in mirror mode and I have to manually put it off in the settings and arrange the screens every time.
Hey Chris! Been watching your videos for a year now and these iPad tips are very helpful and helped me work around my M1. Just a question regarding the external monitor mode, does it affects your iPad’s battery? Is there a difference or battery drain when you are using your external monitor compared when you are not using it?
Follow up answer to my question, I tried it and, yes, it indeed made my battery drain faster.
WoW 🎉❤❤❤cool it was Time
is it possible to connect a new iPad to a monitor using a usb-c to hdmi/displayport adapter? If does, which is better ?
when I am connected to an external monitor and you want output audio to my homepod mini i get the message i can use airplay when connected to an external monitor. do you know of a way to use my home pod mini when connected to an external monitor for audio output.
Does it support high refresh rate? If at all, it will be a game changer. I just can't get mine to work at high refresh rate.
Will the external monitor work with the a13 chip of the apple ipad 2021? How do I connect the ipad and monitor together ? What type of cable exactly it called?
Is it okay to keep the iPad plugged in to the charger all the time while working or does it damage the battery? I was waiting though for a different sentence, perhaps we won’t be needing the mac
Hey - Is it bad to keep your M1 iPad Pro plugged in, charging all the time?
u have light sabers? nice :)
This works flawlessly for my m2 air and my iPad M1 Pro, also works for my regular iPad 9th gen, no keyboard needed on the iPad
Air is M1, not M2.
@@heySam514 wow thanks sooooooo much, I was afraid people weren’t gonna realize it was an error 🥴🥴. I can sleep at night again
I hope next update, ipad have a off screen in a monitor. For minimal use batery
My monitor doesn’t even see my m1 iPad Pro (iOS 16.2) :(. I’ve plugged the monitor into an HDMI adapter which plugs into the usb c port of my ipad, but the monitor stays black (doesn’t detect any input). I know that there’s nothing wrong with either cables as it works on my MacBook Pro connecting via USB C
How can i adjust the brightness of the monitor ? I have the monitor settings on 0 brightness but its still too bright 😅
External support is incredibly frustrating. It doesn’t display in the correct ratio with on my Samsung 34” monitor. Changed hdmi cables and even bought the Apple adapter to see if there was anything I was doing wrong. I think they should specify that this external display support is only available on very, very specific monitors!
I actually cannot get it to work properly. I have a 34” curved Philips display and when I connect it to the monitor it does the same as before. I do have and use the smart keyboard cinnected. I have the 2021 Ipad pro cellular
Can you use iMacs that don’t support stage manager/macos Ventura?
What connectivity do I need to connect to a pc monitor between the iPad and the Samsung monitor?
Hi, what's the brand of your monitor stand?
If only we had an iPad Mini Pro! 🙏
I have camera rotation problem When using the Zoom or Teams app, my camera rotates so I appear sideways when I move between the iPad and external display
does bypass the battery when connected to a monitor?
Oh man excited to check this out! The audio output thing is going to drive me crazy.
Was this video edited on Resolve on the iPad 🙃🤘
This one wasn’t cause I’m still learning it and need to get this video out on time. I’ll be editing in it more soon.
Can u do gaming on the extended display?
Hi does your external monitor go to sleep once the ipad is turned off? I have an asus rog monitor attached and it never fully goes to sleep and the backlit appears to be on. Wonder if there are any workarounds for this.
Hi- what if the monitor does not have speakers? Does the audio default to the ipad then?
Thanks.
Does it work like the clamshell setup on the Mac?
When I use GoodNotes 5 on my Ipad, it mirrors at full screen on the monitor so I cannot use the monitor for another app. Is this a expected behaviour?
Can you use external monitor support on an M1 iMac?
Does it only works with the m1 ipads?
does this work with any monitor aspect ratio? or can we use ultrawides?
Hi, I have an old 32” monitor I tried it before buying a new one for my external display for my iPad Pro. But it doesn’t go full screen. Will that be an issue if I buy a new monitor? Thanks
🎉 but now the problem is output sound can only by dock connector how to switch to ipad speaker??
what task manager do you use in this video
Is it fullscreen supported for any ratio?
Hi, what usb c hub are you using??
Everything to M series.. iPhones too?
Anyone else having issues with notetaking apps such as goodnotes, notability etc? When I open the app on the iPad it is mirrored to the external monitor. So frustrating. Is there any way I can fix this?
Bit of a shame that 4th gen iPad Pro can’t do this
Will this work with an external "TOUCH" monitor
Apologies if this is answered already somewhere - but wanted to ask anyway since I might be getting a studio display to use with my M1 iPad Pro. When I lock the iPad, my current external display (LG 27UN850-W) will stay on with a black screen. I have to unplug my iPad for the monitor to go into standby, which is a problem because it’s also the way I charge my iPad. While I like that monitor, I wish I had better built in support with the iPad.
Does the Studio Display address this at all? Does the screen turn off? I also have some USB speakers I use with it - Pebble V3. These are okay, but how are the built in speakers?
I have the exact same issue with my Samsung ultra wide. I have to manually turn the display off. Let me know if you get an answer. I’ve googled forever trying to find an answer.
does this work with the iPad 9th Gen too?
I wish this would work wireless to my smart tv :(
Can you game on the external display?
Still think this is the IPad way and I love it, otherwise get a computer. I’m a photographer, and I just left using my MacBook Pro to work on my iPad M2 92% of the time, You are doing great Apple.
can I use an external TOUCHSCREEN monitor?
Why the image on my monitor is not full screen and the colors are dull? I have a 4k monitor.
Does it work with iPad Air 5th Gen M1?
