I do a combo of digital and cash envelopes. I keep track of my digital budgets with Quicken, and I have binders for the cash categories. I have been doing this for about 15 years now, and it really works!
I do a fully digital zero based budget (every dollar gets allocated to a category until the paycheck is at $0). I have three children 10 and under, many unexpected expenses at times, and can't get to the bank very often. So far, I have had 1 'buy' on Amazon in 2025 and am sticking to our budget and savings plan. To be honest though, groceries are the one area that I struggle with, and yes, I cook from scratch, don't eat out, etc... grocery prices stink!!

It is actually really easy. I have a tracker as every envelop. I „stuff“ it with writhing my amount for the month on it. Every time I pay something I write it down. I was shopping earlier. The complete bill is 40€. 29€ of this where grocery’s and 11€ household iteams. So I note down the shops name and the 40€ in my monthly overview and then I subtract the 29 from the grocery’s tracker and 11 on the household. I’d does need discipline in writing it down daily.

I noticed that you recommended putting a 401K/IRA on hold to pay off debt. My concern is the employer match that I would lose out on by putting the retirement on hold. What is the best option for someone of my age trying to get out of debt but save to retire?

I don’t currently work for anyone else. I’ve just recently been able to make my “side hustle” into a FT income. It has been 3 years in the making. Whatever you do- make sure you love it and put in at least one hour every day dedicated to it. After one year, you will have 365 hours of work put in. You will see a huge difference. No excuses, no distractions. Just get it done! 👏
I want your car insurance rate. lol. I pay $1022 a month here in NJ. I am insuring youngest son and his car, my car and oldest son listed as a driver on my policy. NJ requires me to list all licensed drivers regardless if they drive my cars. It’s annoying. My goal is to get my youngest off my policy as he’s working now. Males under age 25 or 26 rates are higher.
