Phyllis' voice struck me like lightening in the late 70s and I studied voice as a result. Truly Phyllis has the best voice of all time. Unfortunately, the effect of bad men in your life can really take away your strength. That's what happened to this beautiful work of art. I still feel connected to Phyllis. I had to go through too much. Protect and respect yourselves!
Two Powerhouse Soul Empresses Love and miss you Queen Phyllis. Congratulations on your Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame Melba. Praying for continued life longevity. happiness future success love peace and joy
love u Melba the duet was beautiful BUT ALL WE NEEDED WAS QUEEN PHYLLIS ON THIS ONE ! sorry not sorry ! This the tyoe song that Queen Phyllis delivers from her very soul!!!! #SALUTE
Gladys was overjoyed! Both ladies sounded fantastic. I knew that Phyllis would sound great doing this song. She easily could have made this song a hit on her own. Some may not agree, but I think Melba could have worked it on her own, too. With that said, neither singer got the recognition they deserved. Both were terribly underrated.
Two vocal legends. I loved Melba's strong soprano and Phyllis' suave style and smooth alto. Now about their outfits. Boy was that a different time where people were a whole lot more colorful and creative in their expression. Miss Phyllis! R.I.P. Mercy I wish she was hear today! And I miss hearing Melba's voice. Think I'm gonna load up my ipod with some of both today.
I think y'all need to keep in mind Melba is 5 octave soprano, that is her voice. Phyllis is naturally smooth and calming, them performing together is just like Patti and Safe performing together, that's why some singers like Patti and Melba and Aretha don't perform to much with other artists, they are both powerhouses, but Melba's voice is stronger then most. She is a true suprano, excellent singing from both, however them together was not the best choice since they have such different strong unique voices
Wow,I sold her that Jack McConnell millinary(Hat) back in 1984 at a store called Roscil's in Oakland. She purchased two hats, two pair of shoes and matching handbags!
This particular hat is on Ebay right now and it says "one of a kind". I wonder if it is the one Phyllis was wearing or just someone trying to make a sell.
She purchased three hats that day at about $1400 each. And what makes you think she only wore it in 1991 just because the video was taken that year.Futhermore her seamstress came in the store with her.I also sold her two pair of shoes size 13
+Stormy D. Obviously you never purchased genuine gator or crocodile mens shoes which cost from $900 on the low end to $5,000. My shoes like Phyliss hats are too of the line and cost more than a lot of cars. Therefore they will be worn a lifetime.Just like a tailored Armani suit never goes out of style neither does an upscale millinary .That's what you call a hat. If you don't have a clue about fashion you're better served learning that wasting my time.Futhermore besides selling to Phyliss the late poet Maya Angelo was also my repeat client who I sold footware to.
I miss hats like that. I wish there still were hat stores for women. I was in a church a year or so ago. The pastor's wife had on a hat like the 1920's flappers hats. I wished I could find me one like it.
@@vadamsable Yes. Sad that women dont wear hats anymore. Not even if it's cold, raining or snowing. Lol. Thinking bout my mom, grandmother and the women in my life growing up. They were beautiful and classy.
I completely agree! Finally someone understands. Melba Moore's voice is full of magic and wonder and she should not be scrutinized negatively just because of their vocal differences.
I aint trying to compare because both are really BLOWIN IT!!It takes a tremendous amount of gift for both of them to do what their doing on stage like it's that simple. These women are a true powerhouse!!!
DIVAS, that's all I can say!! Melba was another underrated voice, underappreciated as evidenced by some of the comments. Phyllis is my girl but I can give props to talent.
Aw man, how could I have forgotten this performance! I the only thing I remember from The 1992 Essence Awards is Denzel Washington and the fabulous En Vogue. But Phyllis Hyman killed it! I wish I could appreciated this back in 1992, but I was only six, and this was old folks music. lol
Why can't people enjoy good music without inciting controversy, confusion and conjured competition? Two of our great singers onstage both being themselves and being the best versions of themselves...Nuff said. All this pitting the two against each other is childish and pointless...they were NEVER in competition with each other. They both had their own lane and maximized in them.
Melba Moore has NO LIMITS to her range...she has highs...and lows...she is just a very unique singer...quite unconventional. Some of you must not know much about Melba Moore's singing style, which while it is not the same as Phyllis Hyman's, it is every bit as remarkable!
Love this duet with Phyllis and Melba and briefly seeing Nancy Wilson in the audience cheering on her two friends performance. I think she and Gladys Knight were pals too. Yayyy Ladies!!
Happy 74th birthday Melba Moore, wow this is heavenly watching these two beautiful legends singing this glorious song originally released by Karyn White
Although Melba has the top note and since she has a softer voice (esp. in that higher key), I would take it down a notch since she wants to sing it with power so that their voices could both blend better. Phyllis has an impeccable voice, but Melba does too; yet, it’s about the blend and not one person.
I love Phyllis that was one of my favorite people I saw her in concert so many times akways great. This woman was amazing. I could write a book how beautiful her was sbd so down to earth. She is truly missed. Thank You!
Wow! Wow! is all I can say for Phyllis. This is my first viewing this taping and she is unbelievable! She has this gift like Luther Vandross has (not past tense). She is phenomenal! Phyllis never cease to amaze me…I Luv the original know one can ever do it like Karyn White..but Phyllis was given you her version and it was very Nice. Phyllis Hyman was one of a kind.👏🏽💕
Melba Moore is a Broadway actress and singer....so she had to be able to project strongly as a singer......Phylis Hyman's voice reminds me of the female version of Luther Vandross....velvety smooth but can get down if need to be.......these woman are phenomenal!
So sad, some of the selfish and narrow-minded comments here. This duo's performance was to honor Gladys Knight with the music industry's best vocalists, which were/are Phyllis Hyman and Melba Moore. It was not a competition between these two ladies. Next, if you know the television industry, all TV shows are rehearsed and scripted. In addition, then you'd also know, that these two ladies had rehearsed together several times TOGETHER before the airing of the show. Lastly, I don't believe that there is ANYONE on this page, that can perform to the level of these two ladies as vocalists and as entertainers, if that be the case... no doubt you'd have a recording contract as well, or at the very least a paid position as a professional music critic. Why must anyone disrespect either of these two ladies, whom have shared their musical gifts and talents with us? One thing that these ladies, and other professionals know, is that, it's about the music and the job...not competition. Only amateurs have a mindset of "competition" and "comparison in nature." In addition, the real competition is when you challenge and push yourself, to hone and perfect your craft, and the real "comparison" occurs when you have measured 'improvement' against where you were performance wise, six-months or a year ago, to where you are currently. All I'm saying, is stop the nonsense, foolishness and utter disrespect for the living, and especially for the deceased.
It's no competition. I love them both. I adore Melba, but their voices and styles did not blend well. For this song, Phyllis should have gone solo. It was not a good fit for my Melba, especially paired with Phyllis and unfairly diminished her talent and amazing vocal skills, making her appear to be trying to hard, while Phyllis' delivery appeared effortless.
Melba made it into a one sided competition. Phyllis never made it big like she should've but she was one of the most respected singers in the business, and I can't even imagine how intimidating it must've been to share a stage with her. Anytime you see her singing with others she just blows them away. Melba came determined to outsing Phyllis and comes IN crazy intense and screaming from her first line. She screams through the whole thing and at one point screams over Phyllis when it appears they were supposed to share a line. I think Melba let her nerves get the better of her and she played herself, because she's way sharp throughout and her delivery is like a sledgehammer and she just does a terrible injustice to the song by attempting to showboat. The fact that the tempo is too fast helps nobody either. But Phyllis just laid way back on it and practically whispered for most of it and the contrast of all she was able to do and convey at a mostly quiet level, against Melba's off key screeching, is pretty huge. It's pretty clear Phyllis is just there to song the song, but Melba tries to make it about them and acts like she has something to prove. And she's the one who comes out looking bad anyway.
@dutico , I never suggested that. My point is that Miss Moore is an excellent singer, was very popular in her time & deserves some respect! I'm a huge Phyllis Hyman fan as well, but a lot of her current followers didn't jump on board until after she met her tragic demise in the 90's. As good as Miss Hyman was the public just wasn't there for her in the numbers they should've been back in the 70's, 80's & early 90's. Let's respect our Soul Legends while they're still living & creating!
@dutico Melba said her ex spread rumors about her being on crack and her voice is not destroyed. If you google Melba Moore on crack or Melba Moore on drugs, etc there is no evidence of a drug problem and if it was common knowledge then there would be lot's of results about it. I'm not bashing Phyllis(may she R.I.P) at all or judging her. Melba can still sing her hits live and not miss a beat
Phyllis has a tone that can’t be drowned out! I love Melba but just because you have a higher voice does not mean the quality is better. Phyllis could have sang this song by herself with her tone and phrasing would completely spellbound the audience. God she was EVERYTHING
Baby Face wrote this sung for Karyn White but others have sang it. I like the arrangement they did here and that each of them changed the words and/or personalized it in their own styles. Miss both of these phenomenal voices. Their ranges remind me here of Toni Braxton (Phyllis Hyman) and Tamar Braxton (Melba Moore).
I'm disturbed by some of the comments about Melba Moore. Miss Moore is just as much a LEGEND as Phyllis Hyman (RIP). In fact Melba was MUCH MORE commercially successful than Phyllis ever was. But BOTH women are excellent singers with very different approaches to music.. This just wasn't Melba's night. It's obvious that she was intimidated by Phyllis' vocal prowess & attempted to out-sing her. Even then it isn't that she sounds completely bad, it's just that Phyllis sounds SO GOOD here.
@soymiguelalejandro23 I'm sittin' in from of my computer bout to laugh myself into a coma @ your take of this performance cuz YOU-AIN'T-NEVA-LIED! LMAO! Phyllis should have carried this all by her lonesome! Bless lil Melba's heart- sidin' w/ Phyllis?? The absolute WRONG thing for her to attempt! I LUV how nice & gratious Lady Phyllis was about the whole thing. Knowin' Phyllis as we all used to, I can imagine the thoughts going thru her mind w/ every off-keyed screech Melba made!! LOL
@dutico I did read what you wrote and Unsung must be the only time she discussed any addiction. Her voice is also not destroyed considering she can still sing her hits and any addiction she may have had is not well known and isn't the reason for her career falling apart.
Thanks for the info.....I still love them both...and you are right Phyllis Hyman's death was shocking......someone sooo beautiful and talented gone too soon.....
