- Comparativa entre el Warm Audio WA-87 y el Neumann U87ai.
Para la comparativa hemos usado el previo TB12 ¨Tone Beast¨ 500 Series de Warm Audio con los transformadores de salida nickel y de entrada x18, conversores Aurora Lynx 8 y el DAW Logic Pro X.
En la comparativa no se ha usado ni equalización ni compresión, únicamente se le ha dado +7db de ganancia, des de el DAW, al WA-87.

I have heard the U87 against many mics and here is what I consistently keep hearing in this mic that others are missing:
*Natural sound, smooth with no harshness, that air all over, and the bottom end is richer and fuller.*
what other mics though, just curious, tried it against any tube mics say some mojave's, or any clones from United Technologies or from Stam?

The mics should be stacked vertically and exactly in line with the fretboard so they are on the same fret of the guitar. Which fret the mic is at matters to the sound.
Also we need to hear a phrase, then that exact phrase back to back with the other mic. Ears forget incredibly quickly.
But anyway, they’re incredibly close. Kudos to Warm for making a mic that is 1/4 the price of the original and pretty much nails it.
Take two original u87 and say the one of them is fake. Then we'll see comments like "I definitely hear the difference, the original one sounds warmer and has more low end"

As any engineer knows, a properly engineered & treated room/studio & proper equipment supersedes the quality of ANY mic. While a good or better great engineer can make ALMOST any decent mic sound great using proper techniques & tools. There is no cheaper equal way to do proper recording otherwise. A fact all too often ignored &/or overlooked in mic comparison videos. The "layers" involved in professional recording go far beyond the layers of tracks.
Thanks so much for the comparison. The U87, through its second order harmonics, managed to give this melodic sound source a great amount of ''pitch information' which made the vocals sit more solidly within the mix. The WA87 exhibited more 3rd order harmonics, and therefore sounded crisper which suits percussive instruments such as the acoustic guitar. Even though the WA87 exhibited plenty of low level detail and was very responsive, you have to opt for the U87 when tasked with vocal recordings.
Are you looking at charts or can you actually discern it from listening?

The U87 will come into its own when you start layering tracks.. Cumulatively, there will be a noticeable difference.
But it will still hold on pretty good just check the test they did on their channel

u87 sounds smoother and and lil more low end. doesn't sound thousands of dollars better than wa87 . impressed with WA87

That’s the thing, the smoothness is actually where the thousand dollar difference is. You can’t get it without paying that much. It’s the Neumann capsule that does it. It hasn’t been replicated.

U87 has more air and mid range, but not a 3k more. I heard the wa87 with the wa73 preamp and it sounded identical to the u87ai
The low mids are not the same. Richness is missing.

Both mics sounded great. Maybe the WA for the guitar and the Neumann for voice. If I had to choose. If I had one or the other I wouldn’t feel like I was missing anything.
The U87 has never worked for my voice so I'm not fan boy-ing over it, but for THIS purpose it has this warm and pleasing tone, especially in the mid range, where the WA87 gets blander...thinner and a weaker sometimes. It seems to be missing that slight warm blanket over the signal that the u87 gives you that makes everything comfortable to listen to no matter what the frequency is.
It's almost like the WA87 diaphragm is looser, or isn't as tuned to keep it's phat composure in those areas. It's a SLIGHT difference that can be changed in the mix with EQ, the right preamp, tube saturation, and multi-band compression etc. so if it gives you the sound you want, for this price no one should feel bad.
Truth is, I make great sounding tracks with stuff that's IN-expensive, so find a great mic that's in the realm of sound you dig for the price you can afford and finish tone sculpting "in the box"
The question is, can it stack vocals and not get weird in the mix..because that's what the U87 is known for. If it stacks right, it's a worthwhile purchase. But I just didn't hear the personality of the u87 that I think people like. But for 600 bucks or whatever. The difference isn't worth the price for 99% of the people out there.

I wish this were a blind test so we could see how well all the golden ears really fair with the playing field leveled. :D To my ears the WA-87 sounds a good bit brighter...probably a rise in the upper presence region. Which is not necessarily a bad thing depending on the source you're recording. A very usable mic. However, at $600 retail, I feel it is rather overpriced. There are several other mics priced considerably lower which will equal or outperform it. The AT4033a comes immediately to mind. World class sonics at a stupid low price-to-performance ratio. Also, the Roswell Pro Audio Mini K47 is another sleeper mic...KILLER performance at a budget price point.
MeTuLHeD def a little more airy
on guitar wa let more fret buzz standout and on the strumming more pronounced mid . My ears say the difference justifies the cost depending on application, but it's 2019 we have a lot of affordable options . :)
Why is the WA87 boosted post, if it was quieter then the U87 the tone beast should have had its preamp signal increased to match as the amount of harmonic distortion would have been different for different input levels. The U87 was a bit more polished and large sounding to my ears either way but the Warm wasnt bad by any stretch. Thanks for the comparison?
Thank you for this comparison! The U87 sounded richer in the top end. It also bore steadier levels of harmonic density which allows a track to sit in the foreground.,

The u87 is without a doubt the lusher sounding microphone. Considering the huge difference in price the wa87 sounds pretty damn good.
The warm mic seems brighter.. and that's just me listening on cheap speakers.. that u87 seems smoother. Cool vid

Yo las fabrico a mano, estamos en Chile, a diferencia de los demás clones no usamos capsulas chinas si no hechas a mano en USA, son mas caras pero el 90% del sonido viene de la capsula del micrófono, incluso la gente piensa que el mio suena mejor que el 87 real!, pruebalo, tenemos reembolso de 30 dias si no estas satisfecho.

I think the point here was that you can buy a lot of guitar lessons for the cost of a large diaphram condenser
can you consider doing this with the Stam Audio SA87? based in Chili, the clones i own seem really decent, they are a faithful clone for 1000 ish dollars.

Que differente. WA87 tienes mucho differente color. Mas metalico. Donde el U87 tiene mas cuerpo y alto tambien.
Neumann is warmer than Warm Audio, when vocals and guitar are stacked it's noticeable the sound is more pleasant

wa-87 is very dark, in the mix it sounds like it's in a box
The WA is cleaner and has a more balanced frequency responce
I preferred the WA 87 on the guitar. The U87 cut through better on the vocal in the mix because it is mid forward, but I wonder if after compression it would matter. I also wonder if the U87 is compressed would it become too "mid" sounding.
At this distance the difference between the two mics will also be due to the radiation pattern of the instrument.
One inch over that sound hole will make the difference...

Off the bat the u87 has deeper more pronounced low mids
@300bpm I mean, the U87 is clearly better. But if you can't afford it by all means go for the WA87, it's not a bad mic, simple as that.
It won't sound thousands of dollars better than wa87, just like you might not hear all the dogs barking or fans and machines making noise in the background of a recorded track, so loud that it ruins the song or the experience of hearing the recorded sound but stack up all that noise over a bunch of tracks and you have some audible ugliness that's hard to identify. With the warm 87 you have some artifacts that aren't present in the neuman. It's not easy to identify because it's very subtle, the differences in details that are presented in the recording... lows of the guitar when plucked and strummed.. vibrance and presence in a balanced fashion. What i'm learning about Neuman is they can reproduce sound very balanced and rich with detail on vocal and guitar and drums in my limited but over a few decades of listening experience.
sell that hunk of overpriced nostalgia! together we can all hopefully stop giving just one company a flagship god status.

The WA87...is NO 87. It literally sounds like $500 cardboard. It's harsher by degrees, and vocals really show that.
I'm assuming, David, that you're responding to me. I happen to be a sound engineer myself...and my ears tell me the obvious: the WA87 is an attempt--merely an attempt--to imitate the obvious winner here, the U87. By degrees, the Neumann is smoother, warmer in tone. The WA87 sounds hollow, it's frequency response lends a harsher tone to the voice. It certainly does not record sibilants the same way,that much should be obvious. I wouldn't even go as far as to say the WA87 is "just as good." It's not even a decent imitation. Numerous reviews here and elsewhere have confirmed that, even. Quite frankly, the WA87 displays more of the sonic signature of the U47 fet, just did a recording with my own U47, and it's far closer to the W87 than is a true 87 capsule.
I have both mics the u87 absolutely destroys the wa87 not even close don't let these videos fool you I have both mics u87 period is absolutely better
