When my husband died 3 years ago I learned a new principal I hadn't understood before. There is an order to things. Mourning with those who mourn come first. When we try to comfort someone who is mourning it isn't helpful. In those early days or weeks of mourning, we aren't ready to be comforted and the "comforting" things people try to say, while they are well meaning don't help. They can even lead the one mourning to feel even more alone. We have to mourn with someone until they are ready to be comforted. And coincidentally, mourning with someone who mourns is actually comforting to them. God gave us that order in the scriptures to help us love and serve each other.

So insightful! I was pondering with some friends about this topic recently with the loss of a close loved one. Along similar lines I was wondering why some people say such inappropriate things at funerals or can be so insensitive when attempting to give comfort. “Well at least” or “on the bright side” or “aren’t you glad that” and similar phrases typically precede something that is not comforting at all. One of my friends said that he feels it’s because most people feel some kind of social obligation to say something, but their empathy hasn’t caught up yet and so they are literally being insensitive. I think you hit it on the head and your comment complements what my friend said, which is that mourning with someone must come before the attempts to comfort. Thanks for that incredible observation and insight!
Melissa’s advice on how to help someone going through something difficult was so insightful especially about just being a “witness” even when you can’t take away the pain ❤. I will remember this.

Beautifully written. I think your thoughts emphasize some of the aspects of the baptismal covenant that they’re discussing here. Sharing her burden helped you carry your own. No matter what burden we carry, we can help someone else to carry theirs. Both then become lighter.
My parents retired to Gunnison and their doctor was Dr. Inouye. They loved him. He took care of both of them to the end of their lives. It was lovely listening to Melissa.
One of the most inspiring presentions of all for many reasons. Mostly for the definition of being in a Latter-day Saint global community. And the definitions of compassion and mercy we can show to each other. She has left an indelible memory in my mind and I will write her lessons in my journal to read again and again and I will now read member stories in Gospel Library. Amazing.

Hearing Dr. Inouye tell us that about 90% of the Church members include English, Spanish and Portuguese speakers. That just made my heart sing at the decision I made back in 1969 to major in Spanish and Portuguese. I just knew there was something right about it.
These wonderful and accomplished church historians Kate Holbrook, Cherry Silver, Melissa Inouye left us far too early and too soon. I am so thankful that the brilliance of their scholarship, knowledge, and work will continue to influence the church and our lives. So grateful for being taught by Sister Inouye again. Praying for her family.

Her last breathes and days in this life were continuing to teach and testify. My life is blessed today in Germany- part of the worldwide audience she describes. Thanks to the three of you. One of the neatest experiences I've had about being part of a worldwide congregation was when I was a missionary in the Marshall Islands, we celebrated the Relief Society birthday. We walked from both ends of the island to meet in the middle to celebrate the utah pioneers and later had a "pioneer" fireside to hear from some of the first sisters to join the church and start Relief Society in their country. It was incredible!
...the other day went by so fast; i kept "editing" my temple appointment, finally having a seat in the last endowment session of the evening...[going through a divorce, i had a "last minute" invite to housesit in Bountiful, Utah for a few weeks]...prayerfully, i have been attending on most days...i walked into the endowment session, & saw an empty seat on the front row...sat down, looked to my right, & saw (miraculously, in my view)...Brother Bytheway...[The Lord knows I have admired John Bytheway, & have happy memories watching his videos & reading his books with my teenagers]...& now faithfully watch "follow me" with Brother Smith...my "mourning" turned to JOY...sometimes, people dont even KNOW how they have "mourned with those who mourn"....thank you for being you!
A great testimony about dealing with cancer and how to approach people. Our granddaughter was diagnosed with leukemia about a month ago and it is a painful journey. It is hard to talk about but also humbling to see those who care and how they have joined in fasting and prayers.
It was so hard to listen to her struggle to speak without coughing. 😢😢😢I have had cancer and coughed for a couple of years. Just wanted to hug her! But listening to what she has to say is important. Bearing with each other.

I completely agree! It helps us to stop seeing people as 'other' because we have experienced it. It gives an opportunity for us to develop greater compassion and understanding and the opportunity to embrace those with differing beliefs and backgrounds... even amongst those who enter the Church. It also helps us to realize the difference between the doctrine and principles and church culture.

The "Carmen" of whom she speaks, is the wife of my dad's cousin. Her Husband, John O'Donnal, grew up in the LDS Colonies in Mexico, served his mission in Guatemala, was the first president of the first temple in Guatemala. After his mission he worked for Carmen's father on a rubber plantation. They lived & raised their family in Guatemala. I loved meeting those cousins when we were kids.
I kept wondering why I hadn't seen Melissa on Come Follow Up for a minute, and then I saw her here and was so excited! I'm saddened to hear of her passing. She was such an inspiring soul. I love everything I've ever heard her say or that I've read from her writings. My condolences to her family and friends 😢❤ I will truly miss her wisdom.❤

I love your program. I watch it on Living Scriptures so have never taken time to comment. My former daughter-in-law had postpartum myocardial after her 5th child. The oldest 3 are my grandchildren. Friday she was flown from a Yakima hospital to UW medical center and learned she needs a heart transplant. Dil was the subject of many prayers including the Temple prayer roll. Today we found out she qualifies for and will probably receive her new heart this Thursday ❣️ They are not church members. The love of God covers everyone❣️ and answers ALL prayers. We know that she has a long way to go, but my heart is full of gratitude, love, hope, and faith!
When I was a young woman I accompanied my grandmother to Gunnison where she showed me her grandparents homes. She took me through the Manti temple and showed me the banisters and windows her grandfathers had made. It was great to have a connection with Gunnison and your guest.

She really had some powerful things to say which can help us to more fully keep our baptismal covenants. I enjoyed the message that we all must carry each others burdens and experience loving others as we love ourselves. Also in a world of constant change it’s important we meet those changes such as the stories Dr. Inouye shares. Thank you and this is my first episode but not my last. For Dr. Inouye I realize you left early because the Lord needed you to inspire us quietly. I will ponder my covenant to the Lord at both of my baptisms . I believe I’m learning to listen and not rely on my own thoughts and beliefs which obviously had led me astray twice.
What a beautiful perspective added by Melissa’s scholarship, well-endured triumphing in the midst of suffering, faith and devotion and brilliant analysis and understandings. So grateful she was willing and able to be part of this discussion. I have listened to this podcast probably 10 times, I love this discussion. A few years ago, a beautiful young Mama passed away after a 10 year fight with cancer. She was a warrior. Her parents live next door, and I did something I have never done before and sat all day with them, just listening to the stories of their daughter - whom we knew quite well. I wanted to be there to mourn with them, and we loved this family so much. Then, the amount of people helping this family was just amazing - of all faiths came together to help them. Thank you for sharing this podcast with Melissa! 🙏🏻

I am from South Africa but live in Utah now. I enjoy listening to this podcast (on spotify) but this episode had a little more of a personal touch to it. The story she spoke of about Soweto at the end of part one is especially valuable to me. The RS sister she mentioned, Sister Maureen, is my sisters mother-in-law. In the late 1980's early 90's, there were significantly higher instances of riots and violence due to apartheid. At that time, the Soweto Branch, which was held in a school building, had black leadership and were part of the same stake as us. My father was on the high council, and because of the very real danger on entering into Soweto at that time, the white members were scared to go to the branch. My father said he would go and every Sunday went into Soweto, as a white male, into potential danger. Sometimes we would go with him. I remember going and loving being there, I loved the people, even as a primary child, I loved how different, yet the same, it was. We never had anything happen to us, we were always welcomed, and never felt the fear as we knew we were doing the right thing. Soweto now has 2 stakes and has grown tremendously. Those early saints in Soweto stayed true and faithful and were lovely to converse with.
Oh no! First Kate Holbrook and now Melissa. This makes me so sad for their families. They were both wonderful mothers and scholars. They will be profoundly miss.
The comment that it is always 1830 somewhere really struck home. About 8 years ago, my parents were the first missionaries in Senegal, Africa. They were humanitarian missionaries, but were allowed to teach and baptize. The branch increased from 20 to about 50 members in two cities. My dad chose the location and they were there when Elder Bednar dedicated the country for the gospel. They worked to complete the paperwork to get the church recognized.
Thank you sister Inoyue for your wisdom from your own lessons gained and our Latterday Saint history. One people, differences welcome, diversity needed as team Jesus body of witnesses of His love, mercy and grace. Rest in love sister ❤❤❤
I don't think you have to know someone if you see a need to mourn and comfort them. I was in an airport waiting for a flight. I noticed an older women crying and she was by herself. I followed a prompting and went over to her. I don't remember the exact conversation but her husband had recently passed away and she was missing him. Some friends had invited her to go on a trip with them but by the time she decided to go she had to take a different flight by herself. Thru visiting with her we found out she was at the wrong gate for her flight. I was able to get her a ride to her gate and she made it home with no more trouble. We had exchanged information and she came to my town to visit family and we went to lunch together. Later I went to her town to visit family and I was able to go lunch with her and spend time in her home. She sent me Christmas cards and called me a few times. She is very dear to me. She passed away a few years after I was able to visit with her. I put flowers on her grave when I visit now. I'm grateful that I listened and acted on my thoughts that time. My prayers are for Melissa's family and those whose love her. ❤
My grandparents left India because of the atrocities they experienced under the caste system -- they walked overland via Burma (now Myanmar) and into Thailand and through the Malayan Peninsula and eventually found their haven in Singapore. I grew up listening to their horrendous tales of harassment, injustice and brutality. I am thrilled to hear that the Indian saints are making a concerted effort to create a casteless community of faith.

I enjoyed the message that we all must carry each others burdens and experience loving others as we love ourselves. Also in a world of constant change it’s important we meet those changes such as the stories Dr. Inouye shares. Thank you and this is my first episode but not my last. For Dr. Inouye I realize you left early because the Lord needed you to inspire us quietly. I will ponder my covenant to the Lord at both of my baptisms . I believe I’m learning to listen and not rely on my own thoughts and beliefs which obviously had led me astray twice.
What a beautiful perspective added by Melissa’s scholarship, well-endured triumphing in the midst of suffering, faith and devotion and brilliant analysis and understandings. So grateful she was willing and able to be part of this discussion. This episode really did inform “facilitat[ing] the application of divine doctrine.” Mourning the loss of Melissa’s physical presence.
So much knowledge and inspiration in this episode!! I stopped to pray for and be grateful for Melissa. I understand she can feel the love coming from mortality ❤

I have listened to this podcast probably 10 times, I love this discussion. A few years ago, a beautiful young Mama passed away after a 10 year fight with cancer. She was a warrior. Her parents live next door, and I did something I have never done before and sat all day with them, just listening to the stories of their daughter - whom we knew quite well. I wanted to be there to mourn with them, and we loved this family so much. Then, the amount of people helping this family was just amazing - of all faiths came together to help them. Thank you for sharing this podcast with Melissa! 🙏🏻

I am from South Africa but live in Utah now. I enjoy listening to this podcast (on spotify) but this episode had a little more of a personal touch to it. The story she spoke of about Soweto at the end of part one is especially valuable to me. The RS sister she mentioned, Sister Maureen, is my sisters mother-in-law. In the late 1980's early 90's, there were significantly higher instances of riots and violence due to apartheid. At that time, the Soweto Branch, which was held in a school building, had black leadership and were part of the same stake as us. My father was on the high council, and because of the very real danger on entering into Soweto at that time, the white members were scared to go to the branch. My father said he would go and every Sunday went into Soweto, as a white male, into potential danger. Sometimes we would go with him. I remember going and loving being there, I loved the people, even as a primary child, I loved how different, yet the same, it was. We never had anything happen to us, we were always welcomed, and never felt the fear as we knew we were doing the right thing.
Soweto now has 2 stakes and has grown tremendously. Those early saints in Soweto stayed true and faithful and were lovely to converse with.

Oh no! First Kate Holbrook and now Melissa. This makes me so sad for their families. They were both wonderful mothers and scholars. They will be profoundly miss.
The comment that it is always 1830 somewhere really struck home. About 8 years ago, my parents were the first missionaries in Senegal, Africa. They were humanitarian missionaries, but were allowed to teach and baptize. The branch increased from 20 to about 50 members in two cities. My dad chose the location and they were there when Elder Bednar dedicated the country for the gospel. They worked to complete the paperwork to get the church recognized.
Thank you sister Inoyue for your wisdom from your own lessons gained and our Latterday Saint history. One people, differences welcome, diversity needed as team Jesus body of witnesses of His love, mercy and grace. Rest in love sister ❤❤❤
I don't think you have to know someone if you see a need to mourn and comfort them. I was in an airport waiting for a flight. I noticed an older women crying and she was by herself. I followed a prompting and went over to her. I don't remember the exact conversation but her husband had recently passed away and she was missing him. Some friends had invited her to go on a trip with them but by the time she decided to go she had to take a different flight by herself. Thru visiting with her we found out she was at the wrong gate for her flight. I was able to get her a ride to her gate and she made it home with no more trouble. We had exchanged information and she came to my town to visit family and we went to lunch together. Later I went to her town to visit family and I was able to go lunch with her and spend time in her home. She sent me Christmas cards and called me a few times. She is very dear to me. She passed away a few years after I was able to visit with her. I put flowers on her grave when I visit now.
I'm grateful that I listened and acted on my thoughts that time.
My prayers are for Melissa's family and those whose love her. ❤
My grandparents left India because of the atrocities they experienced under the caste system -- they walked overland via Burma (now Myanmar) and into Thailand and through the Malayan Peninsula and eventually found their haven in Singapore. I grew up listening to their horrendous tales of harassment, injustice and brutality. I am thrilled to hear that the Indian saints are making a concerted effort to create a casteless community of faith.
