Still rocking this case in 2021 (inner drive cage removed/cut out), with an air cooler. Considering trying an AIO, installed replacing the airpenetrator with a fan above blowing down though. That airpenetrator is loud btw, replaced it with a noctua back in 2013.
Yeah my bad. I grabbed the wrong chip and by the time I realized, I was committed to it! All of my CPUs are just marked "Intel Confidential" on the top, so sometimes I mix them up.
This is an old case, designed in an era where GPUs simply weren't that long. I've asked Silverstone a while ago if they could update the FT03 and make it like 3" longer to accommodate the new long GPUs and have a no slot-loading DVD drive option so the front panel is a clean solid piece of aluminum. Haven't heard from them.
For what I've sen, if you mount the gpu right after you mount the motherboard (this means that there will be less things to interfere), it will fit, you'll have to insert it at an angle through the side where the PSU, and optical drives are placed
noo need the cooling is actually superb, better then most big tower cases as the air in the case never circulates and warms up it's more like a windtunnel :)
jakeplays the point wasnt to be compact, it was to fit that tower-like shape. and to stay non-massive in the process. its not trying to be small, its just that wierd kid in the back of the classroom making avant garde drawings. *happy shrug and smile*
Thanks for the idea Linus, I chose this case for my own gaming build and it works great! The PSU is not silent, but it's the quietest for this kind of gaming rig. You can't have a computer of this strength and put a regular PSU on it. You are the man :>
Good enough for a beast system. I got a 550W 80 PLUS Platinum in mine, intel i5 and GTX 660Ti and I consider it a beast, it runs all my games maxed out.
I done Mod this FT-03 mini case for best ventillation. It can handle: ATX PSU board w/o modular cabeling, Big sized tower HSF, and 10,5" Ref./FE VGA in same time. 620W-PSU/R7-1800x/1080Ti/2x2,5" insane for that small footprint.
Yes that is true. But some connectors like DVI and the power cable is sometimes/often solid for around 5cm. I believe that is why they have the space there to make it easier for the customers not haveing to look for special cabels.
i was dreaming of a case like that, i mean after seeing that macpro cooling i just thought about a case with as little fans as possible (even though big) and a cylindrical shape more or less ( sort of tube-like). great build keep doing what you're doing! :D
Thanks for doing this Linus, I was planning to build this exact system in the next month or so, now I know all of my parts will fit together. I hope the H60i will be available on NCIX soon (I'm a fan of corsair).
Nice build, but I got a few questions: 1. How much does it cost for the entire build? 2. To make a budget build of around 800 dollars what are to be replaced, and 3. Can a WiFi card fit in the build?
Literally the only "Mod" I would consider without changing any hardware, Popping a Perfect round hole over that GPU Intake and slapping a high flow screen and dust filter over it, maybe go as far and adding some more Sound Damp around that hole to isolate the intake air from the air passing the RAD. Other then that, I would certainly build this for my younger siblings to use and play with.
Hi Linus! I have build 2 systems based on this case with almost the same components, except the graphics-card, cpu-cooler, ram. I have to make a small comment about the included air-pentrator fan. This is a 3 prong fan that is not rpm ajustable ont the asus board you are using. I have used this board with the included software, it ran at constant 1600 rpm! I had to use the included 4-prong (pwm) fan of the Corsair H-60 to keep the noise level down. I still had very good temps, with this case!
I was wondering the same thing. Looking at specifications of this 670 and the 780 I discovered that the later is 0.5 inch longer. So maybe it'll fit, tighter fit for sure and I not sure its cooling wouldn't be compromised.
cool stuff, i love these small beasty PCs they prove you dont need a 1200W psu & gaming case that takes up half your room with 15 fans running at max rpm just to play battlefield like some people seem to think..
If you don't mind a case that is slightly bigger but easier to build in, get the Prodigy. Also, that might have a little more ventilation, so if you get a hot graphics card it might run a bit cooler.
The air from the radiator won't become more than a few degrees hotter than it was before. The case is a very tight fit and by using the bottom fan, he saves valuable space in the case (and also it's more silent because you have one fan less). Also, the Silverstone Air Penetrator are pressure optimized fans, which is perfect for using them with a radiator.
I built this - a few notes. The ASUS silent profile doesn't work with the stock 3 pin case fan, so don't bother doing that unless you spring for a new 140mm case fan. Also, skip the modular PSU, connector placement makes it amazingly tough to use the internal mounts.
Very cool build been wanting to do something like this for a long time, currently have a ATX haf x full edition case, so i would love a small one too !
Yeah hot air goes up but do you want the heat from the radiator going right back over you components. This is just a simple design flaw in the case, but that's what had to be done for the connectors to be on top.
Wish I saw this before I built my FT03-Mini, P8Z77-i! I put 2x 124gb Samsung 830 in RAID0, 1tb Black storage drive, H80i and GTX670 EVGA FTW 4gb vram. I removed the CD drive tray to fit everything in. Such a pain in the but to fit everything!
I apologize..I was thinking off hand that silver arrow extreme was the same " height" as phantek phtc14pe which is really 171mm tall ( or long) Forget what I said..that's actually the perfect air cooler for THAT case. Great parts..good idea including the short cable set. Are you on a strict budget? If not I'd get the samsung 840 pro ssd ( one of them for o.s.) and another bigger one for games, then a 3 tb seagate barracuda ( 120.00 at new egg right now! ) for mass storage
About $1200 with all new stuff. Not bad considering performance. Stay away from asrockl motherboards with that cooler setup though! I just bought a new Noctua PWM fan to see if I can get the sound down, the CPU runs very cool, I don't think I need the stock penetrator blowing at 1500 RPM all the time.
I have tried the Airpenetrator-fan in the case but i cannot get the rpm down from the fan. i have used other 3-prong fans, i had left from a EK-watercooling kit, they had the same problem on the Asus z77 de luxe itx board. Only 4-prong fans work ok, like Corsair stock-fan included with the H-60. Or Noiseblocker-blacksilentpro (pwm) 600-1500rmp fans, super silent,, a bit expensive, but they are great! I can recommend the case, the board, and power supply, they are asome dude!
I'm watching this on 480p, with the medium youtube size video.. so bigger than normal..No, i am watching this on my laptop.. You were correct Braydenisawesomeeeee And i am sorry if i am not rich like you to watch yt videos on a tv or if i don't have enough fast internet to watch this on 1080p.. And i was just giving my opinion, not a request.
Okay, I'd agree then. Most power supplies will actually give a maximum temperature range over which they are not guaranteed to be 80+ anything. So given the low airflow within the case it would be a good idea to be well over minimum Wattage requirements.
Don't think so, man. I think I've read you have to mod the case to fit those longer cards in, but I'm not sure about the 780 specifically. Would be great if it did.
Very good video LINUS!!!!! your the man!!!!!!!!! make a superb video this coming xmas and new year!!!! happy new year and a merry christmas linus and family! and to us FANS!!! woooooooooooo!!!! that system is gonna be hard to clean lol!
ok, as u told me that I went ahead and checked my own MB, the GA-G31M-ES2L from Gigabyte, a small but not so small Motherboard and you, sir, are right. Micro is the one with one PCI-E and 2 Ram Slots, and Mini is the really small one like in this Video. Sorry for the confusion. :)
Nice little tower but expensive. Just built one with CM Elite 120 and love it. Are you not blowing warm air inside the case when using the rad at the intake? I use Noctua NH-L9i on my i3-3225 and max temp is 60. Great little machine. Adding a GTX-660 OC to it, it will get noisier for sure, it is actually very quiet. Has two SSDs and one WD Black 2TB for backups and stuff. Running Windows 8 and OS X on it. Two machines in one small box.
yea looking at this for my next build right now my amd 965 be and my radeon 6870 still have some life in them. but i do like how small an powerful you can make this thing is. i was gonna wait tell the next series are cards and things come out before i jump on a new build so the the 4000 series from intel and feel like trying out nvidia for my next card but ill be waiting tell the 700 series from that as well.
81 is quite the safe limit for any GPU. Sure, it can handle higher temperatures by design..but a higher temperature would reduce the lifetime of the card. So, yeah.. 81C is a bit high for my taste. Other than that, awesome video and small rig!!
CPU - 3570k, or 4670k (if you're waiting for Haswell) Mobo - ASRock ITX z77 (best value), ASUS ITX z77 (best overclocker) PSU - 140mm Silverstone, silver or gold 80plus, depends on budget RAM - 8GB low profile, 16GB if in budget SSD - Samsung 840, whatever size is in budget, don't both with Pro series Cooler - Water Cooling is best for ITX. Get the biggest you can fit in your case, don't skimp on cooling for ITX. Case - What you want; FT03-MINI, Prodigy, Node 304, SG08 are all amazing.
This is like sleeper car high power inside but not showing on the outside. I think he swore a few times on this small case though. but love this built.
yes it is, this configuration takes max 380w from the psu, Ivy and Kepler are low power consumers (no OC), the only problem is that it beats the point of silence that 80 mill fan will be loud at that point XD, take in the account the specs that the manufacturer released about power is conservative, that means they give more headroom, and not all 500w labeled psu-s can really give you 500w
i just build up a micro atx pc. Was thinking of building an itx before but i really didn't like cable management in mini chassis like this one. All the wiring is so exposed. Looks untidy and not that good for the ventilation on the inside. And its just 450 watts lol how is that considered as powerful. Though i will agree that the case looks really sexy on the outside. and the single fan under it looked like a really cool cooling solution if it was not so packed with wiring.
Yeah you would be but you would have the heat in there either way if you used an air cooler. And it sounds like quite the little desktop you have there :) I have an x51 with a GTX555 (Will upgrade to a 660 at some point), 8Gb (Up to 16gb when I have the cash) and a core i5 2320 @3ghz
Really, really like the case very much. They should only find a way to run the cables internally to the bottom. Now you have a cable mess coming out on the top of the case which I don't like.
Man I'd go nuts putting that thing together. I mean I'm sure I could do it but with cords all over and such little space. I'd for sure ditch the video card, but honestly I'd only ever build a mITX pc for anything but gaming, like for my father...unless it was like UT99 or quake 3 quality gaming.
Yes it can run it. The wattage is not really important, it's important of course but it's as important as the quality of the power supply, how good the components in it are etc. These days any psu above 400W(if it's a good one) can run a decent pc. As long as you don't have SLI/Crossfire you're good to go.
Uhm. Linus, all the Raven series cases are flipped 90 degrees. Fortress 02 and 03 (both this and its mATX version) feature the 90 degree flip. And then there's the TJ11. Off the top of my head, that's it though.
Linus, I'm not sure if you'll ever read this but I figured I would give it a shot anyways. As far as I understand there is built in failsafe with 600 series Kepler cards in terms of TDP. I know that with my asus gtx 670 if I hit 70 degrees the card would automatically downclock itself to maintain that temperature, the performance difference was so large when it hit 70 degrees that I could notice in game within a few seconds. Therefore at 81C wouldnt you be butchering the cards performance?
That PSU cab gtx 680 without problems, if the PSU have Gold 80 certificatation, you can run it, all system cant consume more than 400 watts a full loaded
Hey. That's an awesome build!!!!!! ....I want one. But........I need a detail list of the parts u used. And if I wanted an amd build what's your recommendations?
Micro-ATX specifies length to be 9.6 inches with width varying from 6.7 to 9.6 inches & Mini-ITX specifies length to be 6.7 inches with width of 6.7 inches. It is the smallest form factor possible utilizing ATX mounting holes.
You might want to check if your h80 is correctly connected to the processor, I have a 3770k and a hyper 212 evo and i have it oc'd to 4.5 and it doesnt get that high.
Linus you are looking radioactive in these newer videos... I am a reg subscriber and I realize you guys have new lights, studio, etc., but the lights are a bit too bright maybe? you appear more yellowish (not in a good way) and highly contrasted (i.e. radioactive). My monitors are on on normal settings and other videos don't appear like that, including your older videos (old studio). Hope this helps, just want your vids to look their best. Aside from that, keep the awesome vids coming!
I went with a ITX build last year. ASRock Z68M-ITX/HT z68 MOBO Intel Core i7 2600S Intel BXRTS2011LC Liquid cooling Nvidia 545 OEM DDR5 addition ( Got it cheap from a friend for 25$ ) SilverStone Sugo Series SG05BB-450-USB3.0 With 450W PSU Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB 1333 Memory Intel 335 Series 240GB SSD Hitachi 500GB Magnetic drive Samsung Blu ray DVDRW slim optical drive The system is pretty quite and robust, but when it comes down to repairs, upgrades and modifications its a pain
This is one of the very few cases... That was not meant as a pun really... That the closed loop water coolers actually make sense because with a good big heatsink air cooling in only 1-2 C behind and its half the price. But here you don't have the room for a 140mm fan and radiator.
well IF you do decide to start your own movie storage: blu ray burner drive+redbox+makemkv+Handbrake+big external hdd+wdtv live smp+good hd tv+ logitech harmony 600 or better remote= movie paradise. With this setup. YOU KNOW you can watch any movie you want as many times as you want and not have to worry about if it will be there. Also I prefer this method because I rarely rent more than 4 movies per month ( blu ray only at $1.61 thus the 8.00 netflix competition amount)
Any dual-slot card less than 10inch or 254mm long should fit, but there is extra room for even longer cards. I managed to fit a 275mm(10.83") long HD6950 into the case by putting in the card into the case before the motherboard.
The only upside to the 2500k vs the 3570k is that it runs just a bit cooler. I haven't had any overheating issues with my 3570, and it is 5 - 10% faster clock for clock. So gaining a few degrees is worth it for the pcie 3.0 support and the faster speeds...
The new xbox series x bring me here jaja
Me too. But Series X is smaller
Still rocking this case in 2021 (inner drive cage removed/cut out), with an air cooler. Considering trying an AIO, installed replacing the airpenetrator with a fan above blowing down though. That airpenetrator is loud btw, replaced it with a noctua back in 2013.
6:21 these nuts
Official DesynqHD got eem
+Official DesynqHD
holy shit.. i ilterally pissed my pants
I heard him say it and immediately rushed to the comments to see if anyone pointed it out. Thank you.
It's been so long since he unboxed this case and said he'd do a build for it. Glad to see he kept his word! :)
15:24 Awesome moment : It doesn`t fit ? let`s tanke another one
Its weird to see someone gracefully admitting their mistake. I applaud you for it.
They said halfway through that they were going to us a 3570K, but Realtemp clearly shows at 2500K (which run much cooler). What gives guys??
Yeah my bad. I grabbed the wrong chip and by the time I realized, I was committed to it! All of my CPUs are just marked "Intel Confidential" on the top, so sometimes I mix them up.
GPU is mounted vertically and with that tall case it can't even house a full length gtx 1080 reference card? wow...
Renaldo015 you can, you just need to cut the bottom of the case like i did. using a 980ti reference right now.
For what I've sen, if you mount the gpu right after you mount the motherboard (this means that there will be less things to interfere), it will fit, you'll have to insert it at an angle through the side where the PSU, and optical drives are placed
Xbox Series X
This is why I am subscribed to you Linus. I love these type of informative videos.
I worry for the GPU.
noo need the cooling is actually superb, better then most big tower cases as the air in the case never circulates and warms up it's more like a windtunnel :)
Finally, Been waiting for this since you unboxed the FT03 Mini.
This case isnt even small
jakeplays Doesn't mean it can't be a mini itx case
Prometheus Hippopotimi
But the only advatage of an mini itx mainboard is, that it is small. so why build a small mainboard into a huge case
jakeplays show me a smaller case where u can put high-end hardware on it.
Soulless Giampiero D.Skull Cooltek UMX1 Plus
jakeplays the point wasnt to be compact, it was to fit that tower-like shape. and to stay non-massive in the process.
its not trying to be small, its just that wierd kid in the back of the classroom making avant garde drawings. *happy shrug and smile*
My first build in 2014 was based on this video.
The pun🤣4:35. "In order to install the radiator, which is really cool in this case..."
Very quick and easy to understand build video..... Good work Linus .. Keep it coming...
Thanks for the idea Linus, I chose this case for my own gaming build and it works great! The PSU is not silent, but it's the quietest for this kind of gaming rig. You can't have a computer of this strength and put a regular PSU on it. You are the man :>
cool little build, its awesome how they can be so small get so powerful
Brilliant video as always. Thanks so much man. Keep up the fantastic work you do for all of us. Cheers
Nice build, but I got a few questions: 1. How much does it cost for the entire build? 2. To make a budget build of around 800 dollars what are to be replaced, and 3. Can a WiFi card fit in the build?
i think this was one of the best videos you made congrats very informative etc
Literally the only "Mod" I would consider without changing any hardware, Popping a Perfect round hole over that GPU Intake and slapping a high flow screen and dust filter over it, maybe go as far and adding some more Sound Damp around that hole to isolate the intake air from the air passing the RAD. Hi Linus!

I have to make a small comment about the included air-pentrator fan.
This is a 3 prong fan that is not rpm ajustable ont the asus board you are using.

I had to use the included 4-prong (pwm) fan of the Corsair H-60 to keep the noise level down.
I still had very good temps, with this case!
The water cooling used here is what is called a closed loop. It doesn't need refilling. It makes water cooling possible for pretty much any one.
I was wondering the same thing. Looking at specifications of this 670 and the 780 I discovered that the later is 0.5 inch longer. So maybe it'll fit, tighter fit for sure and I not sure its cooling wouldn't be compromised.

Yes it would, the TITAN also fits in nice and snug. (utopia computers is offering this particular configuration with the 780).
I really enjoyed watching this video, even though I have no intention whatsoever to buy a PC like this :)
Just always make sure to do your research. This case supports gpu's up to 10 inches so a 780 may cause problems.
He chose this case because it is a very unique ITX case and one of the most beautiful.
That case is actually pretty cool!
I built this on newegg; its about 1400usd.(with a Galaxy brand 670). Very tempting to build.
I apologize..I was thinking off hand that silver arrow extreme was the same " height" as phantek phtc14pe which is really 171mm tall ( or long)
Forget what I said..that's actually the perfect air cooler for THAT case.
You were correct Braydenisawesomeeeee
And i am sorry if i am not rich like you to watch yt videos on a tv or if i don't have enough fast internet to watch this on 1080p..

@Moonface00z but the mATX layout and airflow is broken or at least subpar. maTX with all the mini features would be great!
Very good video LINUS!!!!! your the man!!!!!!!!! make a superb video this coming xmas and new year!!!! happy new year and a merry christmas linus and family! and to us FANS!!! woooooooooooo!!!! that system is gonna be hard to clean lol!
Okay this is fantastic. Need to small-grade to that size one day.
Wow, this little machine is actually much more powerful and still runs cooler than my proper mid-tower machine :(
ok, as u told me that I went ahead and checked my own MB, the GA-G31M-ES2L from Gigabyte, a small but not so small Motherboard and you, sir, are right. Micro is the one with one PCI-E and 2 Ram Slots, and Mini is the really small one like in this Video. Sorry for the confusion. :)
standard for high end stock cooled cards these days. It would benefit from better airflow in the case but the temp is within safe limits
Two machines in one small box.
all 120mm rads fits at the bottom even dual thickness one but you will have to remove the drive bays so you will be limited to a singleSSD
sadly not all of the pc gamers think that way :( but i completely agree with you!
yea looking at this for my next build right now my amd 965 be and my radeon 6870 still have some life in them. but i do like how small an powerful you can make this thing is. i was gonna wait tell the next series are cards and things come out before i jump on a new build so the the 4000 series from intel and feel like trying out nvidia for my next card but ill be waiting tell the 700 series from that as well.

Other than that, awesome video and small rig!!
CPU - 3570k, or 4670k (if you're waiting for Haswell)
Mobo - ASRock ITX z77 (best value), ASUS ITX z77 (best overclocker)
PSU - 140mm Silverstone, silver or gold 80plus, depends on budget
RAM - 8GB low profile, 16GB if in budget
SSD - Samsung 840, whatever size is in budget, don't both with Pro series
Cooler - Water Cooling is best for ITX. Get the biggest you can fit in your case, don't skimp on cooling for ITX.
Case - What you want; FT03-MINI, Prodigy, Node 304, SG08 are all amazing.
linus you should list all the parts use in this build in the description of the video and maybe a link to ncix to buy
already liked before watch, knew this is a good job
This is like sleeper car high power inside but not showing on the outside. I think he swore a few times on this small case though. but love this built.

High end video cards sometimes use an 8 pin, or 4+4, 4+2, maybe even dual 8 pin for something really really high end.
i just build up a micro atx pc. Was thinking of building an itx before but i really didn't like cable management in mini chassis like this one. All the wiring is so exposed.
HAF XB is like 3-4x the size of this case!
Really, really like the case very much. They should only find a way to run the cables internally to the bottom. Now you have a cable mess coming out on the top of the case which I don't like.
Great show, one of the best lately. Thank you!
If I'm not mistaken, it's a Corsair H series, H80 or H100, I believe.
As long as you don't have SLI/Crossfire you're good to go.
absolutely loving this build...gonna do a smalll case build on my next setup
Uhm. Linus, all the Raven series cases are flipped 90 degrees. Fortress 02 and 03 (both this and its mATX version) feature the 90 degree flip. And then there's the TJ11.
Off the top of my head, that's it though.
He uses a Lapell mic (The one where you clip it on to your shirt) so i think they might have to do it post production
@Frustrasiian you can use a standard ATX psu if you don't plan on using an internal drive other.than a 2.5" ... ans watercooling will be mandatory ;-)
Hey. That's an awesome build!!!!!! ....I want one. But........I need a detail list of the parts u used. And if I wanted an amd build what's your recommendations?
Micro-ATX specifies length to be 9.6 inches with width varying from 6.7 to 9.6 inches
&
Mini-ITX specifies length to be 6.7 inches with width of 6.7 inches.
Aside from that, keep the awesome vids coming!
i wish they do this case design in MATX..its just looks so nice
Great demonstration of how you can pack a lot of technology into s really small case
From Saeed UK
I went with a ITX build last year.
ASRock Z68M-ITX/HT z68 MOBO
Intel Core i7 2600S
Intel BXRTS2011LC Liquid cooling
Nvidia 545 OEM DDR5 addition ( Got it cheap from a friend for 25$ )
SilverStone Sugo Series SG05BB-450-USB3.0 With 450W PSU
Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB 1333 Memory
Intel 335 Series 240GB SSD
Hitachi 500GB Magnetic drive
Samsung Blu ray DVDRW slim optical drive
The system is pretty quite and robust, but when it comes down to repairs, upgrades and modifications its a pain
Could you post a build list please
This is one of the very few cases... That was not meant as a pun really... That the closed loop water coolers actually make sense because with a good big heatsink air cooling in only 1-2 C behind and its half the price.
But here you don't have the room for a 140mm fan and radiator.
And a list of all the gear used would be great. thx!
well IF you do decide to start your own movie storage:
blu ray burner drive+redbox+makemkv+Handbrake+big external hdd+wdtv live smp+good hd tv+ logitech harmony 600 or better remote= movie paradise.
Could cut a hole in the gpu side of the case and secure some screen behind it.. maybe fabricate a slot for an air filter..
I love that i5-2500K you've got in there...
The only upside to the 2500k vs the 3570k is that it runs just a bit cooler. I haven't had any overheating issues with my 3570, and it is 5 - 10% faster clock for clock. So gaining a few degrees is worth it for the pcie 3.0 support and the faster speeds...
i love your videos bro !! your awesome !!!!! keep up the good work !!!
yes you are right ! Real Temp 19:32 I can't imagine the temp for a 3570K because that chip are more hot
Loved 15:45's irony, "making sure that we're (Crunch sound) not breaking anything" :D
Thanks for your comment, I bought a SFX PSU from silverstone, 450W GOLD...should be working fine =))
