Roxane Gay and Twitter brought me to this gem of a discovery! Forever grateful!
I am trying to learn the bass line for this song, and it's making me never want to bother picking up a bass again. This chick is just ridiculous. I was listening to the studio version, and I noticed that after the first chorus, she drops the whole riff down an octave, EXCEPT that high G which she keeps hitting. Meaning she runs all the way up and back down the neck for each repeat of the riff. I came here to see her play it live and confirm that yes, that is in fact what she's doing. Just insane. Who can play like that?? Not me, that's for sure.
+beavinator1 yahp, that is tough
+beavinator1 all while singing. shes amazing!!!!!
+beavinator1 Yeah, the singer gets a ton of attention (and she is very talented), but the other three are every bit as good. I have seen them live too, and they were tight for 90 straight minutes, but still having fun. It was both a good time and really impressive.
You can do it- I believe in you! =D
I am a bassist, as well, (though I haven't played in a while, need a new bass. Dx) and I can tell you from experience, the hardest songs are the most satisfying to learn. :3
Yeah... this is nutz! everything they do!
By a lark I heard this band for the first time last night. I'm blown away by the way they develop a song. It's like mixing the Beatles into jazz and adding a pinch of Motown with a light dusting or R&B. I can't get enough.
This was recorded live. No lip-synching!
I miss the days before computers took over the singing and instrumentation. Here, we have some of that treasured remnant.
I love 2:40 when McDuck just laughs at how good Rachael's crazy vocal improv is. You get the feeling they all impress each other constantly. One of my LSD favorite videos.
Yes, you must know this fantastic band very well....
This band is my new happy place.
I can't stop watching videos of this band.
Yeah, they’re awesome. Wait til you see them live.
meat who
These guys need to be more famous right this second
The drummer is incredible, actually, his timing, his feel, for real this whole band rocks
indeed!
This shit is priceless and timeless you could listen to it 20 yrs from now and still get that same feeling as
the first time, I just discovered this band about a month or close to 2 ago through a friend who played one of their songs possibly this one I was pretty lit but when I heard Rachael's voice I sobered up just a little, I thought it was Amy Winehouse at first then I asked,so that's how it happened I got hooked like pooky from new jack city it just kept calling me man! so I looked her and the band up to check out some more of their music everything I listened to so far is jamming.
This is definitely not the kind of music I usually listen to, but daaaaamn they're good. Its not even fair how good they are. I've been a musician for 20 years and after listening to these folks, I've decided to put all my guitars and equipment on ebay because I now realize I suck. I'll just have to pick up a new passion, like making balloon animals at kids birthday parties.
I hope you're joking. Just because you're not as good at something as someone else doesn't mean you can't still enjoy it. If you're passionate about it, what does it matter if you're great at it or not?
I so know what you mean. I pulled into my garage listening to Alice In Chains and a guitar student of mine told me they wanted to learn this song. I pulled it up and just went... damn! This is intensely good! Great even! Fantastic!
this is not my main music genre too but it's very good.
btw. very nice and interesting opinion Sir Jacko :)
Reminds me of the old joke by Tom Lehrer, "When Mozart was my age, he'd been dead for two years."
So, so good. I can't stop watching one after another of their live performance videos. Love the trumpet and Rachel - well I don't even know what to say about her.
That bassist is awesome!
If you like Bridget Kearney's work here, be sure and check out the video of "Henriette" -- the Live & Breathing Pickathon 2012 version. Bridget does absolutely the most amazing upright bass solo I have ever seen in that performance.
SpaceCowboyToo You ain't jiving! That's off the hook!!!!
It's the perfect combination of styles and instrumentation to put people back to a listening place that calls directly to one's soul! THANK YOU for making me remember how to listen!
What a great team. The recording, the video, the voice, the bass, the drums, the trumpet, the song, the arrangement. Everything contributing. Love it.
I see there are some thumbs-down for this. THERE IS NO WAY NOT TO LIKE THIS! It is beautiful complex simplicity. The bass alone is loveable, the vocals, jeeze - what's not to like?
+David Greene You can't fix stupid or bad taste. People are just born with it. Just rejoice that we were born enlightened and can appreciate such wondrous and beautiful things. I'm being a little harsh, but with all the shit music out there now that's dumbing down the masses I'm not going to be apologetic about it.
+David Greene When I see crazy things like people doing thumbs down for music like this I just call them "the perplexed."
Omg....this is music.
Might be the best song ever created
the beauty of this is that you don't have to watch the video to enjoy it.. repeat in the background, awesome!!
Another killer tune by one of the finest young acts in the business. Lake Street Dive rocks! :)
What a nice and refreshing group. I'm blown away and in love with all they do. How lucky we are to have them. Just fantastic. I tell everyone I know to check them out. This band will make you happy no matter what. Heavenly really
Probably my favourite song by them, ever. Great groove, great bass, great vocal phrasing, etc etc
Thanks to this live, I watch all videos of this music band, and now, I'm a real fan !
Oh Lord, thank you for natural TALENT!!!
I could listen to these folks all day long. Unreal and intoxicating. Her voice and the instrumental work are sweet! I love them and I just discovered them.
The sound & production folks that recorded/mixed this are geniuses and the performance is just amazing! This is exactly what music should be-->INSPIRING! I'm so glad there are still actual musicians making music. I feel the genuine love in the music here. THANK YOU!
KEXP does it again. You guys have a real ear for talent and the production of your live recordings is second to none. First you turned me on to Charles Bradley and Now Lake Street Dive, keep up the good work.
Yet another great band that I got introduced to via Tiny Desk!
My favorite song by them as well. Her voice is stupendously, fabulously, incredibly amazing. I love every bit of it. If there was one artist I had to listen to all year, it would be Rachel Price.
Rachael Price is my favorite vocalist of all time!
Such a great band. The music is so perfectly balanced, everyone has a space and they live there comfortably without taking from anyone else. I adore you guys, keep it up!
KEXP, and all the bands it features, for the win!!!
I wish I could make this video into a physical thing that I could beat pop artists over the head with. Yelling "THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT, YOU NO TALENT HACKS".
Been following since their first covers and they're getting better every day
This inspires me like no other piece of music. I love the New Orleans Jazz sound they infuse into this song. I want Lake Street Dive to play at my funeral. How much?
I absolutely love this!!!!!!! Can't stop singing it...
12 years ago my first day of college I hear this playing on ucsb campus an went to the DJ an asked what song an who sung it when right home an RUclips it thank you for the memories an good music UCSB made me love yall memories are what matter the most ❤️❤️🫶🏿
wow..yes!!!! this is amazing, and it is so refreshing to stumble on remarkably talented musicians!!!
Discovered them on worldstar now a huge fan i love the sound and her voice is so beautiful i gotta see em live
Here I was thinking nobody makes good music anymore and I discovered this completely by accident. These guys are amazing.
You guys are phenomenal! Absolutely love.
The sound of this group is...so...captivating!
They sparkle,like sparklers
Un-be-freakin-lievable! Their sound is so clean. Her voice is majestic.
Check out her solo stuff if you haven't already. Out of this world
These kids are outstanding, and the singer and bass player are exceptional!
This is a terrific group of artists.....Can't wait till they get back to Charleston,SC
You guys (and ladies) are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You give me reason to live.
I need more reason to live, since so many people, who hate my music, are now trying to end me.
You guys are amazing!!!!
So good. I just love how they write songs and how they execute them.
Amazing... I am hooked. You guys are amazing. I can't wait to spread this around Portland!!! Ya'll are going to be huge here!
Yes, this is very cool as well. It's so nice to see young, intelligent AND talented people making this kind of music. I think they're all good but like almost every other red-blooded male out there...........it's hard not to fall in love with that vocalist. Something very charismatic about her and I hope that they get the recognition that they deserve.
Right on Rachael - killer voice. Some Boston educated musicians...the best!
OUTSTANDING! Great musicianship all around! Kudos to Rachel Price for the soulful singing!
Love this group! And the ladies are very cool indeed!
Absolutely outstanding. Period.
That's astonishing beauty right there kids...
I think this is my favorite from you guys. So good.
omg. I just love this, I can't stop listening!!!!!!!!
Lead singer is totally slumming in this band. She's a STAR and hopefully, will have a smashing solo career and move into films, as the camera loves her (as do I) she's stunning and super talented. Bravo, Ms Price.
Been a (huge) fan for about a year -- love the way McDuck and Bridget work together. McDuck reminds me sometimes of Hugh Masekela.
Lovely all around! Very much enjoyed this.
this is the strongest argument for the preservation of Western Civilization that I can think of
Extreme, but fair.
Wow. This is what singing and playing is about.
That's sweet! Bass is just so perfect (and she's driving the band). Add in a fantastic voice, a simple snare and ride symbol (with brushes!) and a clean trumpet and you're half way there. What's the other half that makes this so "sweet"? Passion and just having fun! Great stuff... you're in my music favorites with this one.
I forgot on other MAJOR point... fantastic audio recording. Keep that sound engineer with the group!
Yes.. Bridget is the base and bass and foundation and drive behind their sound. She really is something. It's very much beneficial to listen through headphones so you can just ride the bass line through the whole thing. And she is a player! i.e. a jazz musician. Always improvising and creating, and with a great sense of humor in there.. And Rachael sings okay, too.
Coveskipper She is awesome. I'll be at their concert here in Pittsburgh this Sunday at Hartwood Acres with my wife and son. I can't wait. I hope to get the chance to meet Bridget.
Coveskipper Yep, passable singer; even a little attractive ! ;)
I love, love, love, love love, LOVE them all.
Jeeesus you guys just keep gettin better! Love your groove X
Just beautiful!!!!
Just saw you at CBS or ABC
You are wonderful !!!!!!
Now, this is REAL talent. Wow wow wow.
Whatever IT is, they have IT!
I am completely in love. And my ears feel great now.
No doubt! I just saw them live @ my job the other day. The whole bands is just plain funky.
My favorite band discovery of 2012 without question. Awesome. Props to the bass player and the singer is incredible. I agree about the excellent trumpet lick at 2:15. The drummer is great also and looks like he just stopped by in the middle of a run through the park.
Blister and all, still performs a killer. True vocalist, great musician Rachel
Yep it's official, I'm in love with this chick. ;-)
I love you, lake street dive!!!!
Wow, are you sure that's just an acoustic bass, a part of a drum, and a trumpet? Sometimes they sound huge, just like a whole band....And this singer is something else! Congratulations guys! Awesome song!
So much potential in her voice, I love what I'm hearing so far
Those two girls are fantastic!!
The best live performance ever (in my opinion)! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Are you willing to play at my funeral, cause I want me some stuff like this at my last par-tay!
I'm sitting in the library at school & all I want to do is unplug my headphones to share this with my comrades!
Saw them last night!!!!! Unbelievable.
You guys are truly awesome =)
omg. you are all OUTSTANDING!! bass-damn.
One snare, a ride cymbal, stand up bass, trumpet, Rachael and a few mics on the ground. Burnin'.
That's it!!
Bridget is a monster bassist!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS!!!!

The sound is really good !
Straight up sick!
I'd like to hear from the 36 people who down-voted this as of 9/27/14. What's not to like??? I saw the band earlier this summer at Hartwood Acres near Pittsburgh. FANTASTIC show!
