And this has to be the most beautiful and gentle of all of Rachael's performances. You can see the appreciation of the orchestra for the performance at the end.
A truly remarkable artist not only as a singer with incredibly captivating vocal chops but as a thoughtful human being whose song selection reflects her capacity to channel the Devine.
It is hard to overstate how much this combo of Rachael Price and Tom Waits sustained me during a 6+ week bout with COVID. That final verse...devastating. She is simply one of the best vocalists of her generation.
"In a land there's a town, and in that town there's a house and in that house there's a woman and in that woman there's a heart i I Love. I'm gonna take it with me when I go." Magnificent lyrics.
Once again this program stopped me dead in my tracks as I was working on the house. I just had to sit for a moment, alone, and listen to this melancholy tune. Rachael Price's performance was flawless, the production perfect. We are fortunate to have such beauty in our world, thank you for giving me a respite from the pains of life.
I could give this a thousand thumbs up and it would fall short ten thousand times over. Tom Waits and Rachel Price are peanut butter and jelly. I wish she would do more.
If you see enough live music, you will eventually find a gem in which the perfect song meets the perfect singer and then the perfect musical arrangement joins them. Tom, Rachael and Chris have created such a gem. But then again, for those that follow Rachael Price, you know that this seems to happen a lot with her. Coincidence? I think not. Beautiful interpretation!
Okay. I absolutely love the vocal stylings of Rachael Price. And I absolutely consider Tom Waits to be among the finest songwriters of my lifetime-a lifetime that has spanned a staggering pantheon of songwriters. All that properly acknowledged, I don't think I had ever really imagined what she might do with a Tom Waits song. Not sure I was capable of imagining it. So terribly grateful I found my way here to hear it.
I have a confession to make...I had never heard that song before. I'm stunned and grateful for being introduced to it by an amazing singer and of course the incredible ensemble of musical geniuses backing her. Thanks for taking me on an emotional roller coaster with that song and I will now seek out the original from songwriter himself.
This song, and especially this version of this song, never fails to knock me over. It doesn't matter what I am doing or what type of mood I am in. This rendition is deeply emotional and spiritual. It is like going to church, a hug, and peace/contentment with the meaning of life.
Rachel reminds me here of Eva Cassidy. Would love to have heard her take on it, but Rachel owns this song now, and rightfully so. A superb and delicate interpretation by the band as well. Bravo Gabe, Chris and all y'all!
This is an absolute masterpiece of singing and how to tell a story and lyrics while singing. And this song by Waits it's the most beautiful, of course... ✨
I heard this live, driving in my car one day, and it absolutely etched itself into my heart. I come back to listen every so often when I can't express the joys and pains around me...and when I need to be reminded that love is all that will last.

We all should count our blessings, that we were alive to experience the genius of Mr. Tom Waits. The greatest music genius, poet, story teller of all. The cover does justice. Great post!

If someone asked me to pick the most beautiful song I could think of... it would be hard to find another choice. Love, death,... with beautiful images.... interesting, colorful personal details..... add to that a beautiful melody and harmony.... perfection... I'll always go to Waits's gravelly version, but Price is up to the task. stunning!
I haven't listened to this in months.. because I know its power! From Tom Waits original composition to Price & Thile compilation @livefromhere..no other song can make me feel such raw emotion! "and in that woman there's a heart I love, I'm gonna take it with me when I go". Yet another Waits master stroke. And Rachael brings it to another level. Soul lifted.
I am not familiar with all of Tom's work, but I believe the Mark Twain prize is for writers of American society who present it through humorous characters. Tom's work that I am familiar with, seems deep and serious to me. I have not seen much humor in it. While very respectable, I do not believe that the body of Tom's work fits the theme of the Mark Twain prize.
Well, Rachel has a rich voice and great control. Waites’ lyrics paint a deeply emotional picture that few could match with their vocals. Rachel does it in a way that seemed effortless. If she was singing in any language it would sound like romance to me. Definitely made my heart cramp up from out of nowhere.
So glad I heard this woman sing. One of life's beautiful song birds and getting better as she matures. Loves the tears down my face as I listened to this one. And thank you Tom. I will take you both when I go...
It is immeasurable for me how much I love this video. I have listened to this cover nearly a hundred times, I am sure. It's a tragedy that we may lose this show. Thanks for the tunes. This performance has rocked me to the core of my soul.
Rachael, this is haunting, melodic beauty at its finest! To the twenty-two people who’ve “thumbed down” you should stop listening to music! Period! 🤦🏼♀️
She got me again ! That voice is so extraordinary you do not let any interpretation element you otherwise may have preference in ..... just fades as you hear that vocal talent !!! Kudos, young lady. You are wonderful indeed. GBjj
I found this cover just by chance probably 12 months ago. I love Tom waits especially this sing. Rachel's vocal is just superb. The backing is fantastic too. Such a beautiful version of an already stunning song.
In a land, there's a town And in that town there's a house And in that house there's a woman And in that woman, there's a heart I love I'm gonna take it with me when I go. Tom, you're a master.
Tom Waits wrote this song in a beautifully poetic way. Rachel skillfully added to that beauty with a vocal that amplified Tom's writing. Such a well arranged and touching performance.
How is she not the most popular singer in the world?!!
Thumbs up if you've listened to every Rachael Price and Lake Street Dive video on RUclips literally hundreds of times.
Haven't heard everything, but that just did it there...
@5putput hahahahahahaha
And this has to be the most beautiful and gentle of all of Rachael's performances. You can see the appreciation of the orchestra for the performance at the end.
Rachael Price is truly great, but is really difficult to top the writing talents of Tom Waits.
A truly remarkable artist not only as a singer with incredibly captivating vocal chops but as a thoughtful human being whose song selection reflects her capacity to channel the Devine.
Probably the most powerful song ever written.
Rachel Price is a Goddess and we are blessed to be in the same space as her.❤❤

Tom sung by Rachael - a full album would be a super outcome.
As a sometime song writer, I am jealous! One of the best ever!

Similar story, but I was in my car and even when I had reached my destination, I sat in the car to hear this performance to the end.
I am so grateful for Chris Thile compiling, arranging, and progressing music. He is a true genius, and I am forever grateful
It is official, since Chris said it -
The Incomparable Rachael Price.
So well said.. the best music by far on the radio..thank you Chris
The world as a whole kind of... stops... when Rachael Price sings. Double for her singing Tom Waits.
This absolutely kills me. What a voice! What a song! What a performance! Just beautiful!
Tom Waits, thank you for the songwriting and thanks Rachael Price, Chris Thile and band for the pleasing interpretation.
He writes his best work with his wife and writing partner Kathleen Brennan
Spectacularly beautiful is saying it too light. She kept the genuine human and intimate touch to the vocals Tom had in his original, but made it hers!
I’m in a puddle of tears...I didn’t think I could love that song anymore than I already do and then Rachael comes along and slays me!
Me too
Rather listen to this voice on the radio than a cardi b or nicki Minaj anyday. Flawless performance
Me too.
I was in the audience for this and I was a total mess. Music has such incredible power, doesn't it?
Rachel s voice always connects.
This woman opens her mouth and my heart melts...every time
She is remarkable....!

@@Richarh1 So right.
You might want to check out Rickie Lee Jones cover of Waits' "Rainbow Sleeves". That was my introduction to Waits.
I envy you the opportunity to start anew with Waits. The sheer depth of the writing is astounding.

Phone's off the hook
No one knows where we are
It's a long time since I drank champagne
The ocean is blue
As blue as your eyes
I'm gonna take it with me when I go
Old long since gone
Now way back when we lived in Coney Island
Ain't no good thing ever dies
I'm gonna take it with me when I go
Far far away a train whistle blows
Wherever you're goin
Wherever you've been
Waving good bye at the end of the day
You're up and you're over and you're far away
Always for you, and forever yours
It felt just like the old days
We fell asleep on Beaula's porch
I'm gonna take it with me when I go
All broken down by the side of the road
I was never more alive or alone
I've worn the faces off all the cards
I'm gonna take it with me when I go
Children are playing at the end of the day
Strangers are singing on our lawn
It's got to be more than flesh and bone
All that you've loved is all you own
In a land there's a town
And in that town there's a house
And in that house there's a woman
And in that woman there's a heart I love
I'm gonna take it with me when I go
