Omg I’m so jealous of the soil you have there! Here in northwest Arkansas digging a whole that size by hand would require about a whole day with all the freaking rocks we have in our soil
I feel you. I'm in the St Louis area, I have 4 inches of top soil but under that it is all clay and rocks.

Connor - the simple fix here is to change your grass type to 100% poa triv 😉…poof, no more blotchy bright green spots!

You got a bigger torch. Incinerate the areas around the undesirable grassy weed. It works. I prefer that to what used to be done up until the 1980s. Turf renovations used to be done by covering areas with plastic and releasing Methyl Bromide+Chlorpicrin under it.

put the electrical wire into a HDPE pipe to protect it or wire conduit. Later easier to replace or pull another one. I would have dug it with a narrow shovel and lift the soil in one piece and put it back to original place , little sand as filler , golden. More work , less mess. The trench is huge. But hey , you like to work :)

Hey Connor….I did what you’re doing to my backyard. Burned it out, tilled it, and went back thru and any roots or anything that looked like dead growth, I torched it out again. My neighbors thought I was a lunatic torching out black dirt…lol
I let it sit for 2 weeks to make sure…then added sand and manure and tilled again, then planted KBG.
I live in Chicago so my backyard is only about 1,200sq ft but I have never had one weed or poa or anything in 6 years. It took 6 weeks but holy crap…well worth it!

I so want to do this to my mess of a lawn but being in Denver County I will probably end up in jail in no time. lol. Got clumping fescue in a ton of spots, poa in 2 small areas and a ton of Bermuda.
