Have really enjoyed your videos have just embarked on building my first koi pond not to your scale but have got some tips to bear in mind well done mate
Thank you Junella, very much appreciated. I assume it was a heron that broke the covering net, but I guess I'll never know. All the biggest and best coloured baby koi had gone. Heartbreaking really. Thanks again, Terry.
really nice terry love it got some good ideas from whaching this video think i need to add some plants and some nice co never tress the same as yours around the back end get my coping stones cut and skim all walls and then should be looking really nice and new air discs as well thanks again terry Steve I've liked and love the pond.:)
So sorry to hear of your loss of the babies. The little guys seem to be getting along well in the pond. The wee ones in the shed have a palace of a tank. lol. I so look forward to your videos, you have a great way of presenting, just like visiting an old friend. Do you design ponds for others? I really think you should, they are so well thought out and come out beautifully!! How do you collect your fry? Just keep a close eye, after you have seen them spawn? How rough is your winter? I'm from Canada, so my poor fantail goldfish do not have it easy. OK, enough questions for now. Again, thank you for the great videos, will look forward to more. Brenda
Hi Brenda, Thank you for your nice comments. Very much appreciated and your very welcome. Yes, very upsetting losing the baby's. It was all the bigger nice coloured ones I lost. Wire mesh next time lol. No I don't do ponds for others, I've not been asked lol. I got the fry from the old pond which had algae in it at the time. I just pulled out hands full of algae that was full of eggs and put it in a tank. You have to be quick as the other fish eat them. There quite partial to a bit of caviar lol. Our winters are not too bad. Not much snow at all. The pond temperature did get down to 2 degrees last year, but not for long. Thank again, take care, Terry.
Looks fantastic! really nice pond well done! I'm all up for your idea of motion sensor sprinkler rather than a net as I have. A net spoils the view. Well done nice video.
Hi Matthew, Thank you. I have been thinking about this setup with the scarecrow sprinkler and adding another sensor attached to an old jigsaw in a tin. It would then not only set the sprinkler off but the jigsaw rattling in a tin should give it a scare. I hate it when I have to net the pond. It really does spoil the hobby. Terry.
Stunning looking pond you have very imformative , your fish look very healthy and colorful ! I have a goldfish pond with a mix of goldfish yellows , sarasa comets , shubunkins of different colors and few pure whites and red caps , i am trying to get the koi look without the koi !
Thanks Joe. I did have goldfish but the koi seem to have taken over. Someone was starting a pond so I gave them to him. He only want goldfish and no koi and his pond looks great. Thanks again, Terry.
Hi Stu, Thanks m8. Oh wow what a dissapiontment when I saw it. Wire netting next time lol. I lost all the good ones, that's the trouble. Thanks again. Terry..
Great videos - a true inspiration, I've actually started planning my own! I have a question regarding chemical filtration in your experience (maybe you've answered it before in another video). Do you use (or have used) an activated charcoal filter in your system? If so, at what point in the filter system does it belong? And does it 'see' the entire flow of water through the pump system? Or a side stream?
Hi terry, how do you stop the small koi that you've just let into the pond from going into the bottom drains? And how do you get them out after winter? Or do you just leave them in there now?
Hi Jack, I don't think they will get in the bottom drain. I suppose they could if they wanted but I'm hopeing they'll grow a bit while the waters still warm. They will stay in the pond now. They should be ok. Terry.
I don't feed colour food but, I do buy good food. I do believe what you put in you will get out. If you feed them rubbish you will get a lot of rubbish out. I do vary there diet. I feed them prawns now and again, sweet corn. cheiros, brown bread and other different things. So they get a vaired diet. Thanks, Terry.
love the pond fish and video . have you ever tried to keep sturgeon ? . I have but something went wrong as they did service . one of those cases when the fish just disappeared .
yup that's one thing I read today . some ppl say there can't cope with blankweed when young . but I don't think it will be that as it's not to bad at the time I had them . and when feeding them try putting food straight on the bottom with a scope and little And often as there not big meal eaters . and feed the koi floater at same time to keep them busy
how old are those babies that you've put into the pond? i have managed to fish out about 100 babies from my pond, they are currently in a swimming pool but i've ordered a growing pond for them to stay in till they're old enough.
Wrighty such a shame about the bigger ones, the ones you are left with still look like lovely fish though. hope mine turn out as nice as yours after a year. ps the pond is looking very nice, well done
Thank you, The mother and 3 of the farthers are Japanese Koi and it does help with the colour of the young. They've still got a long way to go colour wise. The sad thing is I lost the ones I'd picked out for my self. Out of 100 baby's you will loose one or two, but you will get some nice ones. Thanks again, Terry.
How old are the ones you put in the pond plz.wud u not have to put the scare crow thing throw a declorenator thing or will a bit of clorine not matter.thanks for the video
Glad to see the new guys are getting along with the old fishies. A shame about the other ones getting plucked like that. Any suspects at this time? Your cat was looking way too innocent sitting there. And where have we heard not to look behind the curtain(Dorothy & Toto)?
Hi Harry, I'm not sure what it was. It must have been quite heavy as it broke the net, so I don't think it was a cat. I'm thinking herron and the scarecrow must have done it's job keeping it away from the pond. I can't believe it got all the best ones. I suppose I have to chalk this one down to experence mate. Wire netting next time lol Thanks Harry, Terry.
Hi Sev, So sorry mate I missed your comment. As you may know the shelf broke (completely my fault) but as my ponds covered for the winter I've not bothered but I will have it repaired for the spring. Thanks, Terry.
That's why I wanted to have the pond built as near to the house as possible. If they see humans around they dont usually come near. That's what I'm hopeing anyway. I must admit I am worried now I've lost the little ones and winters on the way. I really don't want to use a net, only if I have to. It does spoil things a bit. Terry.
another option is to get an electric fence I made a small decorative fence around the pond with some half inch copper pipe ( or you can use the normal wire ) set it about 4" high on some plastic pipe so it wouldn't ground out and hooked the electric fence up to it I put it on a timer aint had any problems with cats or raccoons heard a splash one night found a wet patch on paving but never seen or heard it again just remember when it's ON as its put me on my butt a couple of time's lol www.electric-fence.co.uk/voss-farming-xtra-safe-230v-mains-energiser.html#
Hi Carl, I must say the electric fencing has crossed my mind a few times. Thanks for that great link. I just might invest. My problem is my cat. She doesn't usually bother with the pond but knowing my luck she would if I put that up lol. Thanks again Carl, great info mate. Terry.
she'll only do it once trust me my cat doesn't get out much but she touched it once and never again ill upload some pics of my setup to my google drive and send you the link let you take a look how i did it you could also run a line to your stock tank run a line around top and a ground about an inch apart that way if anything gets up there and touches the lines it will know about it i clip a line around my stock tank with some clamps works good when i use it drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwKUQ6IGWFCNZFptVHV4MFdQcHc?usp=sharing
Wow! Thats the garden I dream about. Very nice! I see what your saying, it doesn't look out of place at all. I can see it will be me that gets the belt though lol. Will defernatly look into it. I think the biggest problem might be her in doors lol. Thanks for that carl. Terry.
thanks still a work in progress i run the regular wire around the back of the filter box and under the deck i just pounded some re-bar in the ground put some hosepipe over it so it wouldn't ground out and wrapped the wire around it 4 inches is a nice height too low to get under to high to step over got mine on a timer from around dusk to 8AM seems to do the trick you could leave your scarecrow on during the day and the fence at night keeping the better half happy
Good thinking! Will defernatly look into it. The only problem I can foresee is that people like to sit on the wall near the shed. If I have it on the wall on the inside top near the pond so you can still sit on the wall, a heron could still stand on the wall. If I have it in the middle of the wall you can't sit on the wall. I've got to work on that one. I will get it sorted though. Thanks, Terry.
Hi Mike, as I say in the video, I'm not to keen on them as they can have an adverse effect. If you have one I do recomend you frequently move it around the pond as a heron soon reaolizes it's not real. Also if the fake heron is one end a heron will think it's safe and try to get something from the other end of the pond. They do say that thoes floating crocodile heads work, but I've not tried them. Terry.
Have really enjoyed your videos have just embarked on building my first koi pond not to your scale but have got some tips to bear in mind well done mate
Hi Lain, Thank you, Good luck with the pond build. Hope all goes well for you. Terry.
always enjoy your videos sorry to here about your little ones as always pond looks how do you say brilliant happy ponding
Thank you Junella, very much appreciated. I assume it was a heron that broke the covering net, but I guess I'll never know. All the biggest and best coloured baby koi had gone. Heartbreaking really. Thanks again, Terry.

Thanks mate. Glad you like it. Good luck with getting yours done and hope all goes well. Thanks again, Terry.
I have really enjoyed all your videos including the 2 updates-
Thank you Carol for you nice comment. You will find all my videos plus loads more on my website diypondfilters.com Terry.

Thanks for the info on the scarecrow. I didn't know about these. I am a little worried about the neighbours cats but so far i have been lucky.
Cats are not really too bad, but they don't like getting wet lol. My neighbor has 5 cats and there not a problem now. Thanks, Terry.
Great video Wrighty :) it's a beautiful pond mate, sorry about you losing the little ones :( love these films you make.
Thanks m8, I must admit my heart went when I saw the net down. We live and learn m8. Thanks again, Terry.
Yeah thick wire next time eh
Sorry for your loss. Very sad :(
Thank you, It was a bit upsetting after getting them to that size. The problem was it took the bigger and the best ones. Terry.
nice fish give them a hug

wow, this one is bigger and beautiful too.
Thank you, It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it. Terry.
As all your videos- very informative and entertaining! How old and how long are those largest fish? Thanks.
Hi Tolba, Thank you. I'm not to sure on the age, I think there around 8 years old. The two big ones are around 24 inches (61cm) long. Terry.
Sorry to hear about the young ones Terry. Pond is looking great though. Well done.
Stu
Hi Stu, Thanks m8. Oh wow what a dissapiontment when I saw it. Wire netting next time lol. I lost all the good ones, that's the trouble. Thanks again. Terry..

Hi Jason, Thank you for your kind comments. To be honnest I have never used activated charcoal in my filtration so I can't help you. sorry. Terry.
your pond looking very very nice
Thanks Chris, very much appreaciated. Terry.

Cheers Terry, and do you feed your fish anything to help them keep their colour or make the smaller fish gain their colour faster?
I don't feed colour food but, I do buy good food. I do believe what you put in you will get out. If you feed them rubbish you will get a lot of rubbish out. I do vary there diet. I feed them prawns now and again, sweet corn. cheiros, brown bread and other different things. So they get a vaired diet. Thanks, Terry.
love the pond fish and video . have you ever tried to keep sturgeon ? . I have but something went wrong as they did service . one of those cases when the fish just disappeared .
Hi and thank you. I have thought about it but never tried them. To be honest I don't know that much about them. Terry.
OK thanks . I've been doing so more research . got two or three things that I may need to change in my pond to keep them
I do here they do like a lot of air in the pond Terry
yup that's one thing I read today . some ppl say there can't cope with blankweed when young . but I don't think it will be that as it's not to bad at the time I had them . and when feeding them try putting food straight on the bottom with a scope and little And often as there not big meal eaters . and feed the koi floater at same time to keep them busy
I'd also be very careful if you have to treat your koi at any time. Terry.
how old are those babies that you've put into the pond? i have managed to fish out about 100 babies from my pond, they are currently in a swimming pool but i've ordered a growing pond for them to stay in till they're old enough.
Hi, There just over 1 year old. I lost the bigger ones of the bunch. It's funny how some grow quicker than others. Terry.

The ones I put in the pond are 2 year old. The heron got all the big ones. That little bit of tap water won't hurt. Terry.
Sorry for the loss
Thanks Tommy. The heron got all the bigger good coloured ones and just left the small slow growing ones.
Glad to see the new guys are getting along with the old fishies. A shame about the other ones getting plucked like that. Any suspects at this time? Your cat was looking way too innocent sitting there. And where have we heard not to look behind the curtain(Dorothy & Toto)?

How you have attached your lights to the pond?
Hi Sha, I took the rubber suckers off and drilled the slab and screwed them to it. Terry.
Hello Terry, whats happening with your skimmer?
Hi Sev, So sorry mate I missed your comment. As you may know the shelf broke (completely my fault) but as my ponds covered for the winter I've not bothered but I will have it repaired for the spring. Thanks, Terry.
what type of koi do you have?
Hi Breanna, In total I have about 30 fish in the pond. That's why I have a very large filter for the pond. Terry.
+Wrighty looking very nice :) should get a gopro one day
Hi, Thanks, I will do that soon. Terry.
Can Koi and goldfish interbreed?
Koi are a cross between a goldfish and a koi originally, but I not sure if they do, I've never seen it. Terry.
I had the same system to keep herons away from my small pond but they get used to it after a few times so I've now had to net mine :(
