- "Curse on the Gypsies" is a one hour History Channel Documentary that aired in the late 1990's and then quickly disappeared, becoming unavailable and out of print. It tells the story of how Linguists traced the historical roots and true origin of the Gypsies back to their original homeland. A fascinating look at the history of the Roma culture over the last thousand years. Watch now before the video disappears again.
This video is from a 1990's videotape recording of the TV program. The videotape was copied to DVD, then the DVD was copied to the Computer and the MP4 video file downloaded to RUclips.

I review comments but I do not get involved in a battle of opinions. Watch the movie for information and learning purposes. Realize that Poverty and oppression can force people to live outside of society's rules in a quest for survival. So do not judge, criticize, and generalize a race of people until you walk in their shoes, or bare feet as the case may be.
It's sad what happened to the History Channel. It used to actually show gems like this documentary, now it shows ghost-hunting and other such nonsense. This is a superb program, thank you for saving it!
Those ghost hunting shows are bullshit in the sense that what they're really hiding is the technology of electromagnetic frequency devises and weapons. Right now they are experimenting on millions of people and the average person has no clue at all. With this technology they can remotely record your door shutting or what it sounds like when somebody walks across the floor in the room above you then play it back using voice to skull technology and people will think its ghosts. These devices are patented and you can look them up. Most people just ignore what I'm saying which is why they get aeway with it.

What a great documentary! It opened my eyes about their origin history beyond what I had erroneously thought as starting in Romania. A lot of that misconception comes from living in Northern Italy so the Romani people who live here did come from Romania. But their culture and history go much further back and well beyond my initial impressions. Thank you for sharing this information with us! So many pieces of the puzzle fell into place. That fact that they originally come from India makes sense.
Although it's no big surprise that they were persecuted over history, it HURTS nonetheless, doesn't it? People can be sooooo... cruel and ignorant are two words that come to mind... in the face of diversity.
My personal introduction to Romani culture was 27 years ago when I first moved to Italy. I was visiting Venice on a day trip when a band of Rom children surrounded me with excited laughter and ebullient charm, all as a ruse to rob me of my wallet. Looking back on it, it was actually a beautifully orchestrated dance of diverting my attention away from my valuables. At any rate, it created a subsequent sense of distrust in me towards all gypsies, one that I wanted to face head on.
So, one day, I decided to make friends with a middle-aged Romani man who played his accordion in the city center of my new home town. I placed a 1,000 lire note in his donation hat-worth about 1USD at the time-and sat down beside him to listen and, hopefully, open up a conversation. It did. At first, the conversation stayed on superficial levels as he played and nodded thanks to people who dropped donations into his hat. Then I told him the story of the children who had robbed me in Venice. He shook his head and pursed his lips. "Some families do that," he acknowledged, "but not mine. We play music, tell fortunes, and the men do odd jobs when needed. Me? I play music." From that day forward, I always took the time to say hello-and sit for a chat if I had the time-when I was in the city center.
People are people, I'd decided. In all races, and in all cultures, there are people who behave with respect towards others and those who don't. You can't accurately judge the whole by a few. And all mis-behavior comes with a unique history that brought them to believing what they do is the right course of action.
Shortly afterwards, I learned about the agreement the local Italian government had made with his group of Romani. The government gave them free access to land on which to park their cars and vans. It also came complete with water access and electricity at no cost. Apparently, the agreement was made in an effort to give them space without disrupting the general Italian population. It seemed to work because a month later I was sitting in the parking lot of a store waiting for my husband to pick up garden supplies. Next to me was a gold-trimmed Mercedes. Very high end to say the least. In the car mirror, I saw a Romani woman wandering in the parking lot. What was she doing, I wondered? It turns out, she was waiting for her family because they came out, laden with packages, and all got into the gold-trimmed Mercedes and drove off.
At my surprise, my new husband showed me the land the local government had given them to use. It was near an overpass and, from above, I saw an entire community filled with Mercedes, BMW's and high-end campers. Where do they get the money for all that luxury, I wondered? He said to think about it. No rent payments, no utility bills, no phones, and no cultural interest in expensive clothing does provide a lot of cash-based disposable income. His friends who sold cars told me with great enthusiasm how they loved it when a Romani showed up to the car dealership because they made fast decisions and paid in cash.
That's my story of one group of Romani from 27 years ago who managed to forge a more permanent place in their travels... and open my eyes to a totally different way of life.
A lot has changed since then. Many Romani families are now enrolling their children in the school system so there's more integration going on. Meanwhile, my Romani teacher has gotten older and his health isn't top notch like it once was. You can still hear, however, notes from his accordion in the city center now and again when he feels up to it.
But that only tells you about the 1000 years. Which makes before that Time a mystery
@@lauramiller1888 Yes. Before that, they become part of the subcontinent history rather than hold their own identity in the history scrolls and architectural remains. I don't imagine they wrote and preserved their own, but wouldn't it be interesting if they did?.

@@manaschakraborty9192 Rajasthan. I visited there about ten years ago and had the chance to sleep in the desert with Bedouins as guides. One of my most magical memories in traveling around the world. My chapati bread cooked over an open fire, however, might have been the worst they ever tasted. Still they were kind enough to hide their grimaces. :-)

Sounds very Indian, as in India and it's culture and traditions. Cremation and the one year tradition. Same inner societal norms. All peoples of India loves celebration, dance and singing. When families meet someone would be asked to sing, play drums, dance. Still today.
I got to know a wonderful gypsy family. They were in the seal coating business and we initially hired them to seal coat our drive way. My husband bought them lunch in addition to paying them and they got to be good friends. I think people fear what they don't know and since Romani society is pretty closed to outsiders, they only go by stereotypes. Our friends were the most honest, hardworking people I ever met.

My great grandmother was Czech gypsy per my grandfather. He was short, dark skin, dark eyes, because of where we lived people thought he was Italian or Spanish. My children had DNA test 23 and me years ago. It showed small amount of indeterminate DNA which I'm assuming is their Romani DNA? Perhaps I'll do a test, it may be more accurate now days. God bless.

I dunno...... Most people's personal experience with Gypsies is negative. It's an absolute fact that Gypsy children are pressed into service to their elders to thieve on the streets for them. Bank machines, break and enter, snatch and grabs. It's well documented.
The lifestyle of the eternal wanderer is not a lucrative one. One who's meagre legit earnings they usually bolster with theft and paving scams. To remain a wanderer is their own choice.
You can also find documentaries on these subjects. To say that the distaste for Gypsies is merely irrational race hatred, or like this documentary suggests, that they are "forced into theft through racism" is false.
Even the first half of this documentary says that the first historical accounts refer to them as nomads who supported themselves by being entertainers and thieves.

People tend to hate and persecute what they don't understand or what they fear. I believe this is probably one of the most beautiful cultures and they hold on to their traditions and still assimilate into other societies. My best friend since I was 14 we are now in our 60's she is Gypsy. I know all her family. I grew up with them. They have their own language. I know some of it. She and her family have the biggest hearts I have ever met from any human being and the most honest full of love. They don't follow all the old Gypsy traditions. They pick their own wives and husband even if they were Gorja. Some prefer to be only with other Gypsy's in marriage. My friend and her relatives of our age are the last to speak their language in her family. . I was lucky enough to be a gorjer considered a part of this wonderful family and to learn a few words from their language growing up with her and around her family. Her mom was hoot to be around ❤️. Always saying things to make us laugh. Spoken with a mixture of English and Gyspy words. I heard oh Dordy Dordy ! Would you look at that . We heard that alot as teenagers. LoL.. She was a joy to be around. Family parties dancing & music. Lots of fun. My BFF is her mother made over. 😀 I have the best of my childhood memories with my Gypsy family. And still making more with my BFF/ sister. And still learning more of their language. It is only spoken now by the older generation. That I had the pleasure to grow up with ❤️ my BFF is very dialect in the Gypsy language.
They must be absolutely supreme warriors. They survived toughest challenges, ever possible to survive, for any human group; in last 1000 years in the world. Their journey is inspiring. We love our Roma brother & sisters. With love from India...🙏🇮🇳🇮🇳

Prithviraj Chauhan was a king of present day Rajasthan, he was never a king of Punjab, please know your history. Rajasthan is a semi arid area and people there live a semi nomadic and nomadic lifestyle and they know how to survive in hardships. Muslim raids and conquests disturbed their life and most of them started leaving the area and never converted to Islam. While Punjab failed to resist Muslim invasions properly and most of Punjab converted to Islam . Today out of 150 million punjabis 120 milliion are Muslims, 20 million are Sikhs and 10 million are Hindus. Prithiviraj was a Hindu king died fighting Muslims. He is a Hindu hero. He is a hero for the rajasthanis and gypsies not punjabis. These gypsies are all over India, we call them Banjaras. In South India they called themselves Lambadas or Lambanis. Their God is Sevalal and their language is Lambani. Almost all Lambanis are bilingual. Lambanis are categorized as schedulers tribe (ST) category and are given reservations under that category. Lambanis who never had even an acre of land to call it their own, today we will find engineers, doctors, lawyers etc among them. Lambanis are doing good in South India.
Punjabi native speakers are 150 million, 75% Muslim (120 mil), 16% Sikh (20 mil), 9% Hindu (10 mil).
Bengali native speakers are 260 million, 70% Muslim (175 mil), 30%Hindu (85 mil).
Sindhi native speakers are 50 millions, 90% Muslim (45 mil), 10% Hindu (5 mil).
Rest of India is 80% Hindu including 99% Indian gypsies. Rest of India is 15% Muslim including 1% Indian gypsies who are Muslim which is neglible.
So Indian gypsies have continued their culture, language and religion for almost 800 plus years with very little change. It’s amazing to see the similarities between Indian gypsies and Roma people.

Well partly folklore - self fulfilling. A missing child from Portugal was found in Spain with Roma - they'd taken a boy as the family had too many girls. The boy was returned but had been away for 4 years. This is in 1990s when I lived in Portugal.
That kid was never found, Rui Pedro Teixeira Mendonça has never been found, he was declared deceased in 2019. He went missing in 1998. Don’t write stuff that’s not true, that’s how bigotry remains.

Gypsies would come to my grandmother's house in northern Germany, where they sold trinkets, combs, perfumed soap and such door to door. When they left my grandmother's crystal bowl in her foyer was gone too. This would have been in the early 1900's.

As a hungarian, I have many experiences living in a small village where we had large families of romas. Yes, we called them gypsies. Unfortunately, I have way more bad memories than good. The children didn't want to go to school, they stole goods from old people, broke into people's house. They were coursing at each other so badly, drank a lot. Nowadays, it's better than it was. Unfortunately, still in these days, I see and hear really bad about them. It's very hard to hear how much they have suffered over thousands of years. Nobody should live in fear, in danger, and be outcasted. I wish them all the best in life.

What a wonderful documentary. Opened my eyes to my family especially my great grandparents who was Romma(I hope that is how you spell it) origanally from Austria...I am just learning. It took me a long time to understand what my mother was telling us when we was kids. It is so interesting learning about my family.
I come from Chile, and my own experience with them was horrible. Once one of them, a woman, tried to rob my wallet and it wasn't until I asked someone on the street to call the police that she gave it back to me. In Germany, where I've lived for more than 20 years, I see them sometimes jumping in front of other people waiting in line at the store cash register, and they don't care. I had to wait for more than 5 minutes in my car to pass because a group of them were just talking in laughing in the middle of the street!!! The hate or dislike that many people feel for them is something that in many occasions they have earned themselves, and if you say anything against them, then you are a racist, fuck that, I have LIVED these experiences with them, and there might be exceptions, but I don't want to have them anywhere close to me!
My purse was stolen by a old lady Romany. I am disabled . That was not on. But, there has been much cruelty done to them .

Because they can not be charged as adults by the police, one of those teenagers, a girl, even makes fun of the situation and laughs proud about doing it, and this goes on and on and on, it is part of their culture, that is clear, if you think that is racism, mmmmmmm I don't give a crap.

Your experience is very common but from many of the comments here, it seems the opposite has been experienced by many people. That behaviour you described seems to be a hallmark for them and has contributed to them being seen and judged the way they are in Europe. It has happend in Romania and other countries that Gypsy children as young as 11 and 12 bash old people for their money or belongings and one case an old lady was even killed by children.
I have read of experiences by people in poorer Europe, eg Bulgaria and they say that yes, babies have been stolen and taken back to live with the group. When you see pictures of totally blonde, fair skinned, blue eyed, obviously European kids with all their Gypsy friends and family, it's hard to dispute stories like that. It's a very divided subject.
I am not sure what happened a thousand years ago in India, why did most of them leave India? Something major must have happened. I heard they were kicked out due to them being a cursed race, but I don't think I will ever know as I'm sure there are various stories which would contradict each other.
But there' s no doubt that they have had a horrific past in Middle Age Europe but was some of that a result of their behaviour... or is their often unsociable terrible behaviour of recent times a result of the terrible persection from hundreds of years, ingrained in their blood and lives.?
After going through this documentaey, as an Indian, I feel the Gipseys have been wronged over time. We still have Gipseys in Rajasthan, India. They roam and travel all the time in the Thar Desert. They are traditionally cultured and generally helpful people. They practise an ancient healing method which has roots in Ayurveda. It is wrong to enslave and castrate and I feel sad of the treatment they endured from northern barbarians.

Wherever they may came from, they took the same route that nothern barbarians took years before. We all came from Africa and crossed Arabia, India and the large lands of cental Asia and some stayed in Europe. All Germanic languages have their origin in indo-germanic which developed in India. Germans are also decendents of north Indian folks. We are still all related! Now, just seperated by language, culture and looks.
I think the reasons gypsies were maligned, distrusted was because they didn’t associate with the societies they moved through.
In our city, they were strangely dismissive of the normal courtesies. As a nurse working a busy ER, if one of them had to come for treatment no matter how small the whole clan showed up in the waiting rooms overflowing them to the point that other patients had to find seating outside on the benches. Every time more of the clan showed up, they demanded updates even if you’d just updated a huge group already there.
If they were admitted the pattern continued upstairs, creating disturbances among families of patients in waiting rooms, sleeping and overcrowding the relatively small spaces provided for families with loved ones in the ICU’s. If this was their general attitude and behavior in other communities I can completely understand why they not welcomed.
One could say that they developed this as a result of them first being ostracized from society but which came first?
Interesting comment. It always amuses me that different peoples (such as the gypsies) feel entitled to the rights that the existing population have. They avoid paying taxes by doing cash in hand and do not assimilate, yet they expect all the benefits that tax payers have. Then they claim their human rights have been abused!
Societies are built upon mutually accepted norms and behaviour. If you choose not to conform then you do not belong & are not entitled to the communal pool of contribution.
The prejudice didn't bother me, I was too in love with the magic of my lifestyle and culture. There is no greater freedom or reward than to be born Roma.

I'm 66 years old and disabled and homeless because my social security isn't even close to enough to afford an apartment. I swear that they are talking about me in regard to how the gypsies have been treated through the centuries. I have experienced the exact same thing. I remember bands of Gypsies in my home state of Washington in the early to mid 1960s. They had RV trailers and big flat bed trucks that they hauled lawn furniture they had built and sold for their sustenance.

Some of the best readings that I have had have been from Romany. Very accurate. Its in the blood and the its taught in many families today through the female family line and passed down. The video suggests that the readings were cold or fake or for survival, I'm sure some might have been, but many are not.

I spent 6 months in Slovakia with Romani people's in capital Bratislava,and in 6 months they all start speaking fluent PUNJABI,and they already knows many hindi and Punjabi words like ear,hair,face and many more,love them and missing them till now.they don't taught me Slovakian language but learned Punjabi.

After watching part 1 and 2, I would say that they were no where near religious. However, they were spiritual.
They were quite religious. Their belief in Christianity enhanced their spiritual beliefs and customs. Many went to churches, and there even began a gypsy fairy tale that involves the first gypsies stealing a nail that would have been pierced into the heart of Jesus.

It’s amazing when people that I speak to are unaware of the fact that Gypsy people (Roma) were so persecuted, right along with Jewish. I’m not sure why that wasn’t broadly taught. I’m not Roma but I am a WOC it’s atrocious how they were treated, very sad.
I’m Jewish and always highlight how the Roma people suffered alongside us in the Holocaust. Many Jews do the same. Their suffering and loss needs to be acknowledged.

😊a group of Roma would come through my mom’s small town. After she and her big brother learned how to escape from my grandma’s watch, they’d hang out with the Roma and learn stuff. My mom could read tea leaves and a standard deck of cards because of them. This was the late 30s/early 40s. And the Roma word gaizhe sounds like the Japanese word gaijin, which means foreigner.
My father used to tell of the gypsies brightly painted wagons coming up the hill to his father's farm outside of handcock n,y,, in the early 1920's ..they stayed for a part of the summer fixing all of the metal objects for money, helping with the dairy for trades of goods, the neighbors were concerned for my father's safety as they were sure they would steal him as He was a child. My grandparents had no fear of this. My father was impressed as a child by how much they knew about caring for animals and how they took care of their horses. When my father was 16 he got his own farm and he put to use what he had learned from them and others, his farm was clean, his animals were well taken care of. What is sad is that today you tube has such as my gypsie wedding that does the gypsies no service on the whole....
Fine documentary which helped closer understanding, love snd appreciation of these special peoples who embody the meaning of "being free". I was a bit disappointed however, because not enough time was spent on their musical heritage. A couple quick shots of Duke Ellington and BB King, don't really say much about the Romani themselves. I think Django Reinhardt would have been a better choice. But this was an American production, so I imagine, European Super Stars like Django may not have been easily relatable and recognizable to most Americans. Duke Ellington knew Django personally. I want to add - we are now in the 21st century & most countries have anti-discrimination laws forbidding discrimination against another race, religion, gender, age etc. Therefore the Gypsy/Roma people can fight against discrimination. The Roma activists & Roma people in this video must stand up for the Roma people around the world. Fight for the Gypsy/Roma people to be recognised as a race of people, with your culture & language. For example the Roma people in France maybe French citizens, but your race is Gypsy/Roma. You can speak French & Roma & be proud of it. You can start Roma villages all over the world so that you can retain your language & culture.
One of the greatest contributions by the Roma people to music is Flamenco music. It’s a great fusion of Roma & Spanish music.

There's a film made in India 'Seeta aur Geeta' (1972) about twin sisters born to a rich couple. A Roma woman decides to raise one of them as her own based on a 'technicality'. This one turns out street smart, spoiled and sassy. However because of the demise of the rich parents soon after, the other one is at the mercy of her greedy relatives and they systematically destroy her confidence and make her life miserable. Once the girls grow into adults, their places get exchanged due to a series of events. During these events I was unable to make any sense of the roma twin's motivations, she seemed a bit mental. After watching this documentary it's so much more clear and nice to see that the film makers actually put in all that effort into depicting gypsy psychology and that the Roma were actually the good folk for all their lying, stealing, baby snatching and going with the flow in general.
Whats messed up is, everyone in the world these days scream racism excep for us. Most haven't had the racism like we Rom have had to endure for YEARS AND YEARS. To have to hide to this day, its heartbreaking.

Through out history there has always been clashes between nomads and sedentary people. There are still nomads from India through Iran and the Middle East but more and more settle down every year.

The worst mass fight that has taken place in Madrid in recent years occurred a few weeks ago on the outskirts of the city. It was triggered by a murder. A young man shot and killed his fiancee. And two Gypsy clans clashed with each other, with knives, sticks and pistols. Almost 50 people were wounded, all of Gypsy ethnicity. And at least 30 were arrested. They destroyed cars, shops, mailboxes and other urban furniture in two streets of a small town in their brutal confrontation.
