Can You Use the BlackBerry KEY2 in 2023?

- The BlackBerry Mobile KEY2 is almost 5 years old now, but can you still use it in the year 2023? The answer is yes. The BlackBerry KEY2 is running Android 8.1 and has not received an update in several years, but most apps still work for it and the keyboard is still top notch as long as the phone is well taken care of. The BlackBerry Mobile KEY2 is the flagship BlackBerry Mobile device and one of the last remaining remnants of a physical keybaod phone to use in 2023. Sadly they KEY2 doesn't have 5G support and will only work for a few more years until 4G is eventually shut down.

I'm still using my key2LE. MOST apps still work but I'm noticing that some are becoming incompatible. They tell you that you have to update, then the play store won't let you update. The phone is so well built that it's out living all its software. Its frustrating how we are forced to keep upgrading phones when new ones really aren't better or even offer what older ones do.
This is exactly what made me switch to the pixel. My key2 still runs great but too many compatibility issues with apps.
Same here! I moved to Thinkphone
"MOST" would be nice to have all apps works.
@phoenixdowner7359 Some work and some don't. Chase doesn't work, but my credit union does.
Does Whatsapp work? 👀 any other notable apps that are now unusable?
I'm using a Key One and it's still working beautifully. I don't use it for gaming or watching films - just for making calls and receiving emails and sending texts.
I'm on a keyone, too. I have Netflix, excellent for DLing movies and shows for when I'm bored at the laundromat or public trans. Just a note that streaming video works just fine for me.
@@suryanima_chandranimadoes WhatsApp work ?
What carrier are you using it on? Just curious.
Still loving & using my Key2 on a daily basis. Everything is working fine, and I treat it like the treasure that it is! All my apps are still getting updates, and while not as good as it was originally, my battery is fine. Thanks for recognizing the brilliance of these phones Adam!
I have the same experience with my key2 64gb, still using it every day also for work(administration, daily schedule etc etc). Works great, very good phone. Thanks for this good video.
Love you still cover these. Wish WiFi calling still worked and I wouldn't of gotten rid of it. Still dreaming of a Blackberry Classic on Android. Not the horrible builds of unihurtz, but a sleek, business looking keyboard phone. One can dream.
Let’s build it
@@matthewadkins7973how
@@matthewadkins7973 I'm down
I continue to use the Key2 as my everyday carry. It still does everything I require, and of course the physical keyboard can't be beat. My battery will need to be replaced soon, but it will be better than switching to a Unihertz Slim, on which I took a hard pass.
Thanks for doing this video for those of us who can't move on! 😉
Same here regarding the titan slim... it's hideous.
I've considered the unihertz. Why don't you like it?
@@jebstewart5709bulky i tried but couldnt get used to it so back to the iphone 13 mini but really thinking of buying keyone or key2 if apps like, whatsapp, gmail, outlook and office will work that would be great
Typing this on my Key2. Everything works fine on it right now. No issues. I use an app called Greenify to just close off apps running in the background to free up some RAM once a day to keep things running snappy.
Glad it's still working well for you
Thank you so much for this video, your Blackberry content and possible replacements for it, is why I subscribed. Today you made me realized I can still use one, and that I need to get a Key2.
Glad I could help.
I'm using the Titan Pocket and that is scratching the itch right now, but man, seeing this, I really do miss BBs. I had the Q5, Q10, Classic, Passport, and the KeyOne BE. I particularly enjoyed the BB10 phones, but liked their Android offerings too. Kinda tempted to get a Key2 or Key2LE now. Canada won't shut down 4G or even 3G for a time yet. Love your love letters to BB. Keep up this great content!
Hmmm...$899 brand new in Canada....you can almost get 3 pixel 6a's for the price of a key2 le now.
@@terenceramroop I wouldn't buy one at that price. Besides, it'd be for the keyboard. I don't want yet another slab, so the Pixel comparison is not that compelling to me.
The biggest mistake I think BB made was to partner with Android and not continue to develop their own secure OS. There's more demand for software and security now than ever and many consumers would love a phone that's not android or apple to run the latest apps.
Yeah, I feel you. I miss my old Torch 9810.... Just wished Onward Mobility actually did something... It 'COULD' have been great if BB gave the contract to Unihertz, THEN, maybe they could have changed the physical keyboard to the proper BB layout, multiple years OS support and stuff like that...
I've also contacted another great physical keyboard phone manufacturer of old - Nokia, to try and persuade them into making a physical QWERTY keyboard phone like the old E63/E71 (they were great phones) as, my complaint with HMD/Nokia is that they're releasing these 'Classics' like 3310, 8110, 8210, 2720 flip, 8000 4G, 6310 etc etc, but, some of them run KaiOS (and so can run WhatsApp/Signal etc), but, WHO THE F, is gonna want to type texts/ instant messages/emails out on an ancient T9 alpha/Numeric keypad system?? ESPECIALLY, when STILL TO THIS DAY, one of the TOP THREE uses for phone is texting/messaging/emailing??? Planet Computers with their 'Astro Slide 5G' is another potentially useful phone (though eerily similar to the old (but also at the time great) Nokia E7... In my view, and from what I've researched, physical QWERTY keyboard phones CAN STILL have a place in the phone industry.... I mean Christ... I'd LOVE to buy a modern updated Torch 9810!!! or even a Passport! 😎🇬🇧
What is a Titan Pocket? If it really is a decent transition from BlackBerry.
I'm using a KeyOne and it is working mostly great. However 32GB fills up quickly. So happy to see that you covered this phone as I picked up a red edition Key2 about 2 months ago. I wanted the last grest BB, in my collection and hope the brand resurrects. I do use Samsung for work for several years and still can't wait to put the glass slab down at the end of the day for the BlackBerry experience.
I am watching this video on my Key 2. Legendary! Glad this guy made this video. Check out prices for this phone on the web. Refurbished models starting at 399.00. Brand new in a box models as high as 2000 dollars! Wild. Best phone ever. My favorite thing is when I am in a restaurant and I ask the server to take a picture for us. I hand them the phone, and they look at it in wonder and then pause then ask "what kind of phone is this?" :-)
Tell me about it.. looking at some 100-2 models lol actually might pull the trigger. $800 for a 128gb Key 2, brand new in box.
Not too bad honestly.
What kind of apps are still working ? Basically need Spotify, RUclips
Just got a BNIB 64gb red edition. Everything works so far. Life is pretty great.
My first smartphone was a Blackberry 7100C 😂, the 8800 and original Bold have and will always have a special place in my heart. 😊
I wish they would do another phone just like this and just up the CPU and RAM. its been my daily since it came out and i've been through a couple of them. So so good and fast for typing with, those that are all touch screens will never understand. I really hope they can come up with something to keep this going be it either outsourcing or crowdfunding related (for reference, i did try the unihertz but it just wasnt the same and the camera on the unihertz was awfull for snapchat + similar apps)
The phone itself doesn't look cheap or outdated. They definitely knew how to build phones but kinda gave up on development. What made BB stand out from its competition back in the day was the keyboard and productivity, but they just weren't keeping up with consumer demand years later.
BB made some really premium, durable devices!
@@TechOdyssey Very Durable devices. I had my BlackBerry classic go flying out of the "cell phone pocket" down in the leg of my pants, when I was running to catch a light rail train. I didn't even know it was missing until it was too late, but a girl found it and contacted me. I got it back from her and it was just fine. The screen was not broken and the keyboard was not damaged. All it had were a few insignificant dings on the frame. Even after I got a Keyone and Key2, I still used the Classic sometimes, up until they cut off 3g and it didn't work anymore. I still have it, but I can't use it anymore cuz of 3g. The BB Bold series, which the Classic was modeled after, were probably the best built, sturdiest phones ever made. They also had the best call quality. BB Bold 9000 had the best call quality of any cell phone, ever. It sounded like a landline. The built in stereo speakers also sounded exceptionally good for phone speakers.
Still on my Key 2 bought the day it was made available.
Still running like a champ.
Let's hope it runs until a new Blackberry type phone comes out.
Wow, even the battery?
Does blackberry hub work for you?
I'm still using my BB classic in 2023 as a daily driver in the US.
Pros: I get to use my bb every day, I'm more focused, and I don't overuse my data.
Cons: I can't use GPS can't receive photos or emoji's or use my music app. Also not all Bluetooth headsets work, like my galaxy buds live. But I still have a headphone jack
What service do you have? I miss my BB and need something without all the apps
My Key2 is my daily phone. The battery continues to amaze me, five years now and it still has at least 75% health. To reduce hacking and security risks I have no financial/banking apps or NFC-enabled payment apps, no social media. My space bar issue comes and goes.
Believe it or not, I still use a BlackBerry Priv as my daily driver. It is one of the two BlackBerry phones that still work on Att service.
That's impressive
Why in USA phones stop working after a time? Even NOKIA 3310 works here in Europe?
Still using it?
What’s the other phone that runs on their network?
The only other phone AT&T still list on their site as usable is the key one.
I'm using the Unihertz Titan and it's no where near the luxurious/ premium class of the Blackberry Key2. Hoping Unihertz improve the finish to the standard of the Key2 on their next build. Thanks Adam for doing this vid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I've been Blackberry free for 2 years, tried 5 different phones and nothing else compares. I'm having extreme withdrawals. It's time to revisit the Key 2.
I understand this feeling.
This phone is older than some children. I remember when the phone came out...wow
Older than some children? Lol. It’s 5 years old.
@@TechOdyssey Yeah older than 5 yr and younger children.
@@thetechboyorg I get it. That’s just not really surprising. It’s not that old yet. People have kids all the time.
Isn't every phone older than some children 😂
Almost 400k people are born a day. My phone is older than millions of people and it came out this year lol.
The amount of hardware that ends up in landfills just because software companies arbitarily decide to discontinue updates is disgusting.
obio
Still using the key2 as my daily driver, best phone they ever made.
I can still use my Z30 here in Canada 😁👍🏻
Still love the BlackBerry KEY2 even though it's been several years.
You're still using it?
@@TechOdyssey Currently stored unused
I'm using the KeyOne Black Edition, it's still fully usable in 2023 and I use social media apps on it, what isn't useable as much is BlackBerry Hub as that integration with Gmail died a few months ago and I only noticed when I changed my email password and couldn't get it back into my blackberry hub. I was using the Classic until February when things started going wrong, the keyboard wouldn't work replying to texts but was fine with emails and notes then the network connectivity dropped and never came back so I replaced it with an iPhone 7 because it was cheaper than replacing it with a Priv and I wanted a similar sized phone for when I'm outside, I do have a tendency to drop things and I do not want to have to replace the KeyOne there is very little in Europe with QWERTY keyboard and buying from the UK will make it very expensive with import fees.
Sad your classic died :( that was the greatest phone BB made, I still use mine daily bc I was holding out for BB 5g. But since that's never going to happen and seeing key2 prices in comparison with modern phones I'm afraid my BB days will be over soon. I will plink a tear when I take out the simcard to switch it over
@@MrVlechtje the Classic still works but not reliably for network connectivity and the keyboard definitely needs to be replaced. The Classic really was such a good blackberry phone, the battery was incredible. I will eventually upgrade to a Key 2 or Key 2 LE, they are still worth it for using a keyboard in the modern world.
@@ColinsCity I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal on a key2/LE for a while now but they are so rare overhere (Netherlands) I've never even seen one irl. My classic had to come special order from UK back in 2015 bc by then already nobody sold BB's anymore. That was a risk I was willing to take bc that was a new phone with reasonable specs for it's price then, but dropping so much cash for an obsolete/eol device I've never held in my hands makes me hesitant even when I know BB build quality (my 9700bold also survived way longer then a smartphone should).
Fun thing of using a classic in 2023 is people either go 'hurrdurr crackberry' or they think I'm some hardcore criminal bc of some publicity round encrypted BB's a few years back :D
Still using my Blackberry Key2, some Apps not getting updates or not working. Battery still gets a few days on a full charge because I always run my phone down to zero percent before charging. Space bar stopped working a few years ago, so I installed a virtual keyboard. Now when I type in still use the physical keyboard but have to move up to use virtual space bar. So use to typing that way now I would not even consider repairing physical keyboard LOL. LOVE THE BLACKBERRY EXPERIENCE
My new, old Samsung died this morning, and all I had was my old BB key 2. She's still kicking just fine!
Wish there was a 5g version😭
Me too
@@TechOdyssey Me three...
For sure. I still dream of someone someday, somehow producing one.

We went from having multiple choices; iOS, Android, Palm OS, Blackbery OS, Windows OS... now you have two choices essentially. Apple or Samsung/Android. So ridiculous.
we shoud now have only Android. no more Apple
@@Galaxy.Windows - Android has the worst security by far. A kid can break into it within minutes. Android is Google, and Google HARVESTS your personal data like a tyrant.
Was contemplating to get the unihertz or the key2 and glad I got the key2 in a Mint condition. Definitely recommend !
does the hub still work?
I still use a Priv, bought it in 2016, I've replaced the battery once.
I can still make my Keyone work today too. I don't use it as a primary but I could make it work if I needed it too.
Since im living analog, it still feels beautiful
I'd love to see something, anything, from BlackBerry in the future.
I just wanted to say I love your channel, love the content. I still use the BlackBerry key2 as my phone for pleasure and business.
Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Glad to hear it's still working well for you!
Use mine every day. Still love it. My only beef is it, of course, doesn’t hold a charge like it used to. And the space bar is pooched so I use use the soft space bar. I run Norton 360 on it.
Does Norton 360 run well on it? I use it too. By the way I was able to get a replacement battery and had a local phone repair guy put it in. He was hesitant but I talked him into it.
@@4scene Norton 360 works well including the VPN. The phone runs well and clean.
a good video. i use the key2, i like the keyboard and most of the apps works in 2023
Thank you.
I just had my Key2's screen replaced yesterday (it was cracked and getting worse), and I have a new folding case on order for it to replace the decrepit one I've been using for the past few years. Still hoping for a decent new phone with a keyboard as an eventual replacement but for now I am still happy with it. I've had the space bar issue pop up a couple of times; it seems to be an intermittent thing, so I am hoping it won't get worse...
When 4G finally goes away, if my Key2 is still alive by then, I'll still be able to use it as an mp3 player, and I imagine I'll still be able to connect via wi-fi
Still using mine. Very functional
Funziona HUB? DICONO CHE NON FUNZIONA PIU
Does 4G still operate?
Do you have any other info on your usability? I’d love to switch over but still on the fence on if this one is right for me
I'd love one of those.
I remember my 1st BB, a red pearl 9105. So beautiful and perfect fit. To the good old days 🥃🖖🏻
My first was the 7100g.
Mine was the 7730 after the 950 AOL Mobile Communicator.
@@EricasTouch I had the AOL communicator too!!! It was so cool
I've had a lot of blackberry phones, but it seems that the last models that keep up with technology are key 2/le. The rest are just well built and look spectacular (classic key one priv passport), I've given up on all of them now, now I use key 2LE in 2024
I've still got mine. I only use it at home for fun and on long road trips as my music device. I also use it for emails.
Edit: Got excited and commented early. Meant to add....Great video keep it up!
Still use mine as a daily along side my s22 Ultra. It's starting to show it's age, slowly.. and had gone through a new battery last summer. I have maybe 1.5yrs left on it, maybe 2 if I can get another battery swap. But, I'm doomed afterwards it seems like. I HATE touchscreen keyboards... I struggle on the s22u every time I have to text.
I still has the curve model which is older than 10 years but still works I use it to listen to music which I copied. The build quality is awesome. Today's phones cant beat that. Sadly they stopped.
Even 2G is active in Europe, there is still at least 10-15 years life left for 4G. I use my NOKIA 3310 daily for calls :)
What carrier will accept a blackberry Keyone? Got a BBB100-7 and can't find a carrier!
I'm still using my Key2 that I purchased brand new in 2020, but 4 months ago I dropped it in water. It was submerged for about 2 seconds and after doing a few crazy things- sort of like HAL 9000 while Dave was shutting him down- it reset on its own and has been mostly working ever since. However, the space bar is dead (but fingerprint sensor still works) and the volume rocker button has its moments. I can type with the physical keyboard by using the sym button to prompt the space bar on the screen, but it's not the same so I'm hoping to get it repaired soon with a new space bar or keyboard.
This gives me hope - the silver edition of the key2 is sooo pretty. But the 400$ price tag on eBay has me second-guessing buying one.
My Red Key2 was a great phone. What BB should've rolled out years ago. Wish they still made them.
How is it that some people say they can't use this phone on AT&t and other people say it works fine ?
I mostly carry my Pixel 7 but occasionally go back to my beloved Key2.
It’s always so nice to pick it up again
Thanks for heads up on the lifeline! Gonna keep mine as long as possible. Need keyboard in my life!
Really hope Unihertz makes a 5G keyboard offering, though.
I don’t think they have entering in the plans right now.
@@TechOdyssey Understand, but live in hope!
I still want a 2023 version😢
Just dropped $100 on a charger repair for my Key 2. One morning after rebooting it never came back on....getting a new phone never even came into mind. Now it has dawned upon me that I need a suitable backup phone if I want to extend my Key 2 for a few more years. The only phone I see that comes close to being a backup is the Unihertz Titan Slim with the Blackberry launcher and Hub installed. Now going to have to drop several more hundred for that! I just love the Blackberry experience that much☺ Nothing else out there to replace it.
I just dropped $567 on a brand new red edition Key2. Worth every penny so far.
Aside from the battery showing it's age, my Keyone Black Edition looks & works just fine. The keys even feel like new, and it doesn't lag like my Classic does. The person I bought it from recently must have taken good care of it.
I'm here on my own Keyone Black! I've had it since early 2018. Had to swap the battery once and the charging port PCB once. Still going strong as my daily driver. We deserve an up-to-date, secure, BB qwerty phone. But until then, I'll keep the faith with my BB.
@@suryanima_chandranima I'm glad you're liking it. Truthfully, I prefer my Unihertz Titan so I haven't gotten around to replacing the Keyone's battery but they're both great and I enjoy kinda popping back and fourth.
Great video as always! FYI 4 G is staying in Canada until 2030 so no worries on using this phone for many years.
Mine died last year so I replaced it with a KeyOne cuz I could find a Key2. I refuse to give up my keyboard.
I am still using my Key2; however, 3 apps don't work anymore, as they require the new Android OS. I also heard that now in October the new WhatsApp will stop working. Pretty sad to have to get a new device because there is no upgrade for this phone.

I ❤ Key 2. The battery was driving me mutz though. And all I heard was mixed advice on whether to replace the battery or not because their was no consensus on whether or not that solved the problem.
Speaking of security though. Norton is always offering it's service for phones I have the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Should I install the Norton app?
Still using my Key2 since 2021. Only regret is the old camera. I just need a good external keyboard and it really is the only thing still
Yeah. The camera isn't great. It wasn't all that great 5 years ago. It certainly isn't now
I can't use key2 le on ATT, anyone have the same issues?
I just retired my priv. Sadly. I still have it as a backup
I will choose BB Key 3 over iPhones if they release the new BlackBerry models.
Wish they would bring back the Blackberry Pearl 3G style and just update it.
I wouldn't complain.
What mobile carriers still use Blackberry key2 in the US?
I’m using BB Key 2 LE on T-Mobile
Nice!
My last key 2 space bar was hit and miss , used to take a few pushes sometimes to get where you wanted
Yup. It was a known issue. Happened to mine too.
I miss Blackberry. Many can talk crap about them, but if not for Blackberry, we would not have the Apple iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy S, Google Pixels, One Plus, and many others.
Blackberry paved the way. And sadly, when they stopped making phones, security was gone, and the keyboard gone too. Since the keyboard was gone, I have had more typos since upgrading from my 9300 Curve many years ago.
But at least the company is still around focusing on software security development in the automotive industry.
I'm on it right now!! 😂
Sweet.
Yes you can...typing with it now and doesnt feel like im missing anything tbh
Make a video if it’s still usable in 2024
Yep still using LE as my primary US phone while abroad. Have a mint K1 as a back up. Some apps are non existent but otherwise is fine

I’d probably get a key2 if I was more confident in getting one with a good enough battery or replacing its battery lol

I just fired up my KeyOne today incidently to do a SIM card check for mobile hotspot. The hotspot on my Titan Slim stopped working. Still working with Unihertz tech support to figure out what's wrong 😕 I can't believe how much bigger the KeyOne feels after being on the Slim.
I just don't use it because I can't find this device to buy in Brazil. Great device! Keyone, unfortunately, has little memory and is no longer assisting me.
I really hope one of these basic phone companies make a QWERTY phone already. HMD Global (Nokia) had a rumor but that was in like 2020.
