This made my day because my main two acoustics are a 1999 514ce and a 2005 D-35. Obviously, I couldn't agree more. www.markpalmermusic.com/Musical%20Equipment.html
20ish years ago I went looking for a ‘good’ acoustic. I was living in nyc at the time, so I more or less played every acoustic guitar on 48th street. I liked many, but when I picked up the cedar 514 the sound just blew me away, and I bought it on the spot. Well, sort of. I special ordered a non electric, non cutaway version. I’m guessing there aren’t many others. 20 years later, is still my favorite acoustic guitar. Like the reviewer said, the cedar on the 514 is very warm without ever sounding dull or muted. Mine is actually a bit on the bright side. And the neck has never needed a single truss rod adjustment and it stays perfectly in tune for what seems like months. Finally, it’s wonderfully sensitive and responsive to pick attack. Very dynamic. I now play 11’s exclusively and it sounds just as full as it does with 12’s. This puppy is a keeper.
I own one from the early 2000s. Wonderful guitar, simple, elegant and tone-full, for singer songwriters and finger style. Suzanne Vega owned three, maybe still does, I dunno. At the time she had one at home in her studio, and two she took on the road (one as a backup). I found out about her having this model thrice at once after I bought mine, but it makes sense. The cedar top is warm, but as you can hear here, it also has good treble response.
Agreed, I have a 414ce fltd with a cedar top and rosewood back and sides. The Taylor bracing makes the top responsive but still that wonderful muted cedar sound.
Got a 514ce myself and the cedar mahogany combo is sweet. Green day recorded several hits on a 514 by the way...Hard to beat this guitar for $2500.. Still not sure about the ivoroid binding on the 500 series though. I like the traditional binding myself with gold tuners.
The moment he said "Hey, Katy Perry here..." just blew me off my chair with laugh.. LOL.. anyway great guitar there.. even though i'm much a "Spruce Top" guitar user, this particular guitar still a very good cedar guitar which offer more articulation than any cedar top guitar i've heard before.. Cool review anyway.. :D
Hey guys can you please do a video for the Taylor 522e (the non 12fret version). Oh i don't know it might save me $2300 on a wrong guitar. I would love a comparison of the 2015 om28 if that was possible!!
Please help!! May I know what's the difference between spruce top and cedar top? My current guitar is spruce and my playing style varies I strum and fingerpick. Which one is better overall?? THIS, Taylor 814ce, Gibson j45 or martin d18?
I have the 1997 version of this guitar. It has that same warm tone but it seems to lack the ability to hold up to strumming. Not sure how to describe it but the sound gets a bit "muddy" if you strum too hard. This up to date version with the different bracing doesn't seem to have that problem.
Cedar is known to dislike heavy strumming. However, I never reach that ceiling on my 514ce. My strumming only gets as hard as he did in this video. For singer-songwriter stuff, IMO, a cedar Taylor is king.
514 is a hidden gem and one of the best sounding guitars in the Taylor line.
The 514ce is truly a gem!
2 dream guitars Martin D-35 and Taylor 514ce

I might add mine has both a bridge transducer and a microphone built in.
I prefer the wood binding on the early 514’s. Understand but elegant.
@@GreggBennett-j3p well said!
Best acoustic I have ever seen, by far. It has an electric like neck and plays like one.
Dude your reviews are the best!
Cedar/rosewood in my opinion is one of the best finger style tone wood combo !

I got a near mint Breedlove Phoenix for $2500... sometimes new is not always better
elementy11 For sure. With acoustic guitars for sure!
Know what it reminds me of? A 90's era, deep bowl Ovation. I used to have a black one under their Applause label and it sounded remarkably similar.
00:02:09 first notes. The 514ce is the shite.
What is the second melody he's playing? Sounds heavenly
This guy looks like Ashton Kutcher lost in the jungle for 5 years.
Una chitarra fantastica, la mia chitarra che grazie al cedro è calda, calda....e calda
You said a cedar top. But the Taylor Web site says Lutz Spruce.
trust this guy not taylor swift

Nice beard miss Perry.

Kevin Laycock maybe it needs a setup and it could be bad strings you're using, if that's the case, are you using elixir HD lights? Phosphor bronze?

I actually prefer ceder to spruce
I feel exactly the same. But maybe is it the time spent on a cedar top guitar that has changed my mind :)
When it comes to Taylors, I agree 100%.
Taylor really knows how to build with cedar, and IMO the 514ce is the quintessential Taylor.
That's a taylor I'd own! Sounds sick. I absolutely love cedar and mahogany combo.
kd perry??
What kind of mic is being used to record this?
this guy 2:11
Katie Perry??
Def most fingerstyle suited tho.
HEY YOU'RE NOT KATY PERRY
