  • A troublesome loss for the Seahawks on a few different levels. They lose their chance to control their playoff destiny. They fall in a fashion familiar to many Seahawks fans over recent years. The same issues that have plagued the team, especially defensively came about once again this past Sunday against Pittsburgh. Here is my quick and dirty post game reaction.

I dont understand "just give em the first down" soft zone scheme that we run either. It gets more frustrating when you consider the fact that our offense CANT ever convert 3rd & longs but we just give our opponents free first downs almost every time with that soft zone scheme. Whats the point of making the playoffs at this point? We need PC gone asap.

As a Steelers fan I’d say this is a good take when looking at it from Seattle’s POV. But Rudolph was GOOD last week too and he solves almost all the problems this offense had prior with Pickett and Trubisky. He stays in the pocket and allows the OL to block, our run scheme are much better since firing our OC, and Rudolph has a good arm and willing to stand in there as was evidenced with his throw to Pickens. Seattle wins this game if Pickett or Mitch play.

What worked 10-11 years ago isn't gonna work with the personnel we have, and that includes the DC. If your only mantra, to the exclusion of all others, is "Don't give up the explosive plays," and every team in the league knows it, what do you think every team is going to do? Dink-n-dunk, power running against a front 4 that can't stop it, and a secondary stuck in soft zone that doesn't match up with the scheme being run.
For YEARS now it's been "rinse, repeat" defensively, because the only emphasis has been "don't give up the explosives." IOW you can run it down our throats between the 20s and we'll stiffen up inside the red zone where it's easier to go man-to-man in a compacted space. Well, it's the "run it down our throats" part that exposes the persistent weakness in our defensive scheme, and if Pete's unwilling to put a DC in there who can craft a scheme that fits the players instead of the other way around, Pete might as well ride off into the sunset.
Seattle needs its own gang of bullies up front, who haven't forgotten how to wrap up and tackle, set the edge, and shed their blocks. We have the talent; that's not enough without an emphasis on fundamentals and imposing your will in the trenches. It shouldn't be this hard. You hire DC's who can design defensive schemes that maximize the strengths of the players on the roster, not some cookie-cutter sets that we expect players to execute flawlessly and doesn't play to their individual attributes. You go to war with the army you _have,_ not the army you _want;_ and for a defensive-minded HC that's a fundamental rule that he should know better.

Steeler fan - I totally agree with your brief take on Geno. His ability to slide and move in the pocket and avoid the rush was really a key reason your boys hung and kept it within reach until that strip- sack-fumble. The running game was working but Geno avoided at least 3 or 4 sacks which could have dramatically changed the complexion of the game. Hats off to Geno. I was impressed with his pocket presence and his ability to make plays in the middle of chaos.

We looked so soft yesterday. They got 6/7 yards per run. And that wasn’t even cause of bad tackling, that was just cause of not getting and penetration or resistance on the los. Gave up some big plays in the secondary, but that was mostly cause we were doing whatever we could to stop the run.

Here's a (dumb) theory/prediction: Obviously, the Seahawks have had a terrible past in Cardinals' stadium. The LOB died in that field. Sherman Tore ACL and was let go by Seattle, Earl broke leg his leg and hated seattle since, and Kam Hurt his neck and retired. Hawks also lost the superbowl, where we lost our potential dynasty. You can argue that Russ's downfall can be traced to 2020 week 7 match-up vs. Cardinals. So what I'm thinking is that it only makes sense for us to lose to the Cardinals next week, which will get Pete fired in the offseason. At the end of the day, we'll be able to trace back the demise of every both beloved players and coaches to that field. It would be sad but, in a way, a storybook ending to this chapter of Seahawks football.

As a Steeler fan I was worried about the Hawks offense because our Back seven is pieced together from the practice squad to players who came off the couch. Pat Pete playing his first game as a starting safety. Luckily enough Rudolph has the offense rolling. Online was Dominate, Harris and Warren controlled the game and Mason took advantage of the resulting stacked boxes getting some big chunk plays through the air. I had no idea how many Steeler fans were there until Freiermuth made a catch and you could here the loud MUTH from the crowd afterwords. GG’s Hawk Fans!

Brandon you are Right about Walker, He can Be a 1,500 yard 10 Touchdown Guy. Which would make Geno's Numbers, JSN, DK's and Locket's numbers Explode. You Have to Invest in run blocking Interior OL, Coach them up and be Imaginative in your play calling. By the way Running the ball when you want to would Help your Beleaguered Defense. Where you have Over Invested in the Secondary and Edge to NO Effect. I know you know this, Why doesn't Carrol or the Fanbase?

Your point about backup QBs is made even worse when you consider the poor tackling. It's one thing if they give up soft coverage completions for just a couple yards, but those couple yard easy completions turn into 10-20 explosive plays when nobody can tackle or rally to the ball.

At the beginning of the year I thought our offense would be able to play with anyone. Offensive line injuries and woes , and struggling against good defensive linemen + heavy blitzes over the year aside…I think that ended up being true. Not as much as all of us would have thought, given the offense clearly is the more talented side of the ball, but they could play with the best when they decided to show up.
I was always skeptical about the defense and how it would be able to hold up against the run and being able to hold teams to a points per game that gives the offense a chance. I hated watching Jamal Adams in this defense, and screamed at my screen when anyone said he was a good addition/playing well when he so clearly was a major issue every snap he was in the game and brought the whole defense down. Jamal aside I thought the secondary would generally be competitive. When accounting for a scheme that left so many people on islands or standing around waiting to get passes on, I did think the secondary did okay this year, but man the front 7 just is not there at all.
You’re trying to play a 3/4 scheme with no pressure looks or even fakes, with no real nose tackle although debatably Leonard Williams started to fill that role better than Reed did, with no real pressure LBer…you’d like to think Mafe is that but he’s not. Nwosu debatably could be that role, but got hurt and at best was an inconsistent rush LBer compared to what you’d ideally want in a 3/4…and you wonder why it kind of looks like this.
Show me a 3/4 defense that sits back in base looks that’s successful and I will show you that doesn’t exist. 3/4 defenses thrive on disguise, it’s kind of the whole reason you run that defense…ie you never know who’s blitzing or dropping…If you’re just subbing out 4/3 defensive ends for 3/4 outside LBers who are smaller and lighter on average than a 4/3 DE, and essentially running a 4/3 look you wonder why we can’t stop the run or get pressure, like that’s it right there. 3/4 nickel defenses are not just subbing out your DEs for LBers that’s literally stupid. You still need DEs, and you have your best outside LBer probably in man on the RB. “Updating scheme” without actually understanding “how that scheme works” is doing so but in a detrimental way or just for the sake of doing it. Like show me the number of times we even pretended to double A gap blitz this year let alone ran one, I bet they could be counted on a few fingers. A 3/4 defense isn’t just about throwing in some LBers for DEs and hoping, it’s about pressure. And if you want the team to look at, you only need to look at Pittsburgh teams of the past when James Harrison was featured…or to the Cowboys with Micah Parsons now. If you don’t have an elite rushing LBer, you’re fucked. If you don’t have a nose guard who can hold up in constant double teams, you’re fucked. If you don’t use high pressure or minimally disguise what pressure packages you bring, you’re fucked. If you give offenses easy underneath throws they will negate all your pressure and you’re super fucked.
What I question most is does this coaching staff even know what a 3/4 defense is or does? If not, stop this masquerade and just go back to the old defense and at least then we might be able to stop the run if nothing else lol.

If our defensive guys worked as hard as Brandon does, we would have a much better record. There isn't a lot of "want to" left on this defense and we can talk about scheme, players, game plan, whatever, but when you step onto a football field with the mentality they have and I'm talking about the defense, you are going to your *** kicked.

After this game, even with a path to the playoffs, I would rather see backups and practice squad players in the game. Riq doesn't need to be playing at all right now. Bobby is washed, due to age and overuse from our lack of LB depth, and at the very least should only be out there on early downs. We beat the Eagles because Pete showed some anger and held a few players accountable (and because the Eagles are in freefall). And then we lost to Mason Rudlph at home in a win-and-we're-in game. The hell with the playoffs. Bench everyone and make that defense play for a spot on this team next year, because they played like they didnt want to be here on Sunday,

Riq Woolen had some INTs last year and Julian Love had some this year. But they are worst tacklers in secondary that I have ever seen in Seahawks uniform.
You talk about Pete and John and the coordinators being inadaptable after 10 years. But the products on the field are average at best.

Since hiring Pete Carroll in 2010, the Seahawks have had 3 loosing seasons (7-9,7-9,7-10) and have missed the playoffs 3 times in 14 seasons. 8 wildcard appearances, 7 division appearances, 2 conference championships and 2 Superbowl appearances. Pete turned this team around and continues to draft quality players to make another Superbowl run. I believe that we're right there and I believe changes are needed but not at the head coach position. The Hawks had a lot of injuries this year and put a lot of pressure on rookies. I believe next season will be different (for the better).

We don't deserve a playoff run. Need a complete change at all coaching positions FIRST. We have far too much talent on this roster to be playing this badly. If I was on this team right now I'd be looking to be traded. It's Freakin SAD

What an embarrassing last home game for the season. Is it too late to go back to "tackling 101", among other things. That was painful at home, and I can only wonder how painful it is for the team and coaches.

This was a must win game and that’s how the defense played? lol yea the offense wasn’t the amazing either but they technically was carrying the game but wasn’t able to hold on long enough cause of the poor tackling this coaching staff is teaching.

From a 49ers fan perspective (I know your least favorite) it always feels like the talent on the hawks team is not nearly as good as the fan base and their writers believe and talk about. Proof is in the Seahawks mediocrity for 8 years. Tariq Woolen, Dremont Jones prime examples. I think it’s a mediocre team that people act (and hope) like is better.

We lost game (& season) when we lost RT Lucas (& C Brown) & RB K9 at half-time.
We had v v bad luck w injuries this year. So pray more & moan less 12s.
Did the D get the latest covid strain?
D looked tired & missed Brooks tackles & Pass Rush of Owusu & healthy real J.Adams. ( shud we trade him away as he has had lots of bad luck injuries, & a change cud help him & 12s win).
Well If we end 8-9 we get pick 12 to 16.
K9 & Lucas looked so good until injury bad luck struck. We ain't been the same since we lost Max Unger. 7 years & still trying to replace 12s 2nd best ever OL guy. we Gotta get more RG & RT talent backup to rest Lucas chronic knee.
Geno was amazing vs a top 5 D.
Yes Im UK British but im not being sarcastic like my nation are known for.
    Cuz
These predictions are via Profs employed by B.Baldinger & Neil Reynolds of Sky Sports. Those profs are the best.
Rebuild began w Russ trade & we were in a v v weak state 2 yrs ago. As M.Sando thesis shows - it takes 3 yrs for most rookies to perform well.
As per Baldy & NR Profs both Cross & Lucas are future all pros.
Better still, K9 & Spoon & Woolen & JSN & DK are future HoFers if they stay healthy. (So get em to pray 4 good health)
Also Lewis & Olu & Morris & Chorbonet & Mafe & Hall & Kenny Mac & Leonard & Nwosu are all future pro bowlers.
It looks like a Ravens or Bills or Lions SB winner next month.
Its a new year - 12s ur 7 yrs of bad luck are over - can't wait 4 next yr
    I'm full of optimism!🎉.

It's clear to me that the Seahawks are now essentially the Sonics. This is nothing but a financial investment at this point for Jodi Allen to get top dollar for at the point she is forced to sell. I don't blame her for that, but it is just the way it is until there is ownership here who cares about winning games. I'm 1000% done watching this team until Pete either retires or is fired. There's just better things I can do with my time.

No surprise. They're the classic NFL mediocre team. Win some, lose against any team that smacks them in the mouth. Like their head coach, perennially mostly rah rah talk and very little competitive football the way the NFL is played now. The game has passed Seattle by for a few years now. Wonder why? Go back to their dumb loss in the SB. They've been in a funk ever since, deservedly so. The coach should have been booted back then but the franchise took the easy way out and let his weak act longer. He's an absolute coach who has made a career of convincing folks that cheerleading is the same as coaching. All hat and no cattle.

Or are they tired of this season seafrauds
