  • Recently tested this electric supercharger, which is the second prototype I've made.
    Unfortunately I wasn't able to run it up to full power due to the batteries being unable to keep up and also they were getting pretty toasty. I've ordered more so I will post up a video of the progress. The electric supercharger pulled a peak 330-340 amps of the total 600amp "theoretical" with the LMT 3080. This 600amps is ultimately cooling dependant.
    There is a little more to this setup which I haven't shown in this video and this is something that I'll explain in the next one :)
    You may have noticed the high frequency harmonics... this is due, in some part, to the assembly not being balanced but it is mostly amplified by the natural sound of a 2pole Brushless motor, which creates that high pitch whine. The first video you can clearly hear it's pretty close to balanced.
    I don't know anything about video editing or filming and I've used this opportunity to try and learn :) Enjoy!

    You'll need to connect a powerful vacuum cleaner at the end of your charge pipe to reproduce air intake from an internal combustion engine. A typical stock 8 cylinder engine can ingest about 400 to 500 CFM's at 5,000 RPM, your setup most overcome that flow to create boost or at least be efficient enough to create some power.

    Excellant work. I would rig up an automotive mass air flow sensor on one end of your system in addition to an automotive map sensor, both data logged by an arduino so you can characterize your pressure vs Flow and surge line for farther evaluation on what boost level you might be able to achieve for a givin engine displacement @ rpm.

    really cool to see people working on this tech. I remember there were a few companies back in ~2014 that were popular with the ZN6 community but they're all gone now.
    The technology is a lot further along now than it was then, and Mercedes is even implementing similar systems in their road cars.

    These MGM’s and Lehner motors usually go into big ass 1/5th scale RC cars. Cool to see them else were.

    So sick, I see the potential. They just need a DC to DC converter to used the cars 12-14v output and convert it to 15s (63v) power to eliminate the use of batteries.
    Also the 30100 motor not directly driven would turn that inducer faster and create more CFM. Maybe some kind of small gear box between the motor and compressor.

    First to let you know I am shocked and surprised at the same time what an effort been done to this project really impressed where the jump from fuel to electric power but is there any possibility to get this setup on the rc market I mean electric supercharger for Losi or mcd setup again good job been done and Wish you all the best

    you can run without any cooling for the motor or esc, go for 20s setup with 370kv TP(12kW spec) should be enough and lipo's would never get hot.

    It has to be geared up, you need a good 60-80k rpm on that jet sky compressor.

    Ok your running right off the motor shaft that motor at 48V around what 40k rpm? It needs a pinion and spur gear. Typical normal turbos run at 120k -250k rpm. You need to gear that sum bitch way up.

    Just so ya know, I use a Me 0913 BLDC to belt drive a Paxton Novi 2000 centrifugal at about 1:3 input shaft ratio with six 50ah lead-acids series-ed @ 260 amps and 72vdc to get 8 psi dead-head. The more you try to gear up for speed the more current it's going to take. Hellcat roots takes 60hp off the crank for it's turn-key 8 psi. Have you tried the small 400 roots yet?

      Haven't tried a roots type charger. I think the centrifugal type is best suited for this application. Audi use a centrifugal type so there engineers must be onto something. Could be something worth trying for small displacement engine as the rpms increases as the size decreases for centrifugal types.

      @@pendulumtuning7885 I think what draws manufacturers towards centrifugals is that they can be NA-ed through unlike a roots that isn't spinning. I guess they don't want to put a flapper in the intake to the throttle-body which is what it would take to implement one. I KNOW they put out more at lower RPMs, but I'm not familiar which how much torque a smaller one actually requires. I also think you're correct that electric centrifugals may be better suited for smaller displacement applications; but then I also think about putting one smaller one per cylinder to take advantage of the lesser impeller inertia you mentioned. I just told you what I did so you'd have a better idea of what NOT to do. LOL

      @@golgothapro The Audi solution is only used for lag elimination. Normally the engine runs of twinturbos, that get boostet by the electric turbo at the low end. That way, the car generates full torque at 1000rpm.

    How open was the valve during the psi and amp reading? I would love to know volume numbers. Throw an empty 55 gal garbage bag over it at full tilt and time it. Rough but something. Then mow many psi can you push at a given volume per amp? That's the real test. Im guessing you need more rpms to create more volume. But this cou.ld make huge pressure in alow volume small displacement engine.

    What's the torque like on the motor? Wouldn't it make more sense to take advantage of the DC motor advantage of torque and run it through a gearbox to the impeller?

      Only specs I can see are on the LMT website. In this case that wouldn't make more sense as it would be more inefficient, meaning less sense. I will answer your question and also give advice.
      Based on my understanding of motors and generators, and also a basic understanding of engineering principles and limited physics knowledge.
      Electric motors are highly efficient and output is relative to input minus say 10%. This means that regardless of the design of the motors, the output is almost equivalent to input. So for a given motor size/type, a high rpm motor will have less torque but the same power will be consumed when compared to a low rpm high torque motor of the same size/type. 10kw in = 9kw work done.
      When using electric motors it's important to understand the operating conditions. Eg Don't pick a low rpm motor if you need high rpm.
      Efficiency is important! Adding gearboxes will substantially reduce efficiency and therefore output. Cost and complexity increases as well as the size of the motor and batteries required. This means weight increases too! Adding gears is inefficient and costly if the motor can be engineered to not need it. The transient spike in power to increase the the speed of a gearbox is also a considerable factor at these rpms. Ie centrifugal mass.
      For this application the compressor needs to spin at very high rpms. It is very difficult to spin electric motors at high rpms as balancing and centrifugal limitations are reached, as well as other factors. The load the compressor is generating seems substantial also.
      In the background there was a 3 motor design. I assume this was abandoned due to cost, weight and heat?
      Questioning the sense of someone's work directly can be confronting. If you intend to attack, I find the best way to undermine someone is to ask questions and let them realise they're wrong. So, when asking questions it's polite to fraise them in a way that shows you want to understand more. Perhaps a better way to ask your question would be, "why have you chosen to not use a gearbox?" or "would a lower rpm / higher torque set up be better? ". This way you can learn or let them learn and everyone wins :)

      5 stage gearing would have alot of hp gains

      @@undergroundrc8273 what for do you want 5 stage gearing? Absolutely no problem to achieve 3:1 in one stage. Less complexity, more efficiency.

      @@1974charrua you'd be surprised of how few motors are capable to reach an honest 100krpm, let alone in the power category required here.
      The only useful ones I know of are tp power 3630cm rated at 1800w/100k rpm for 10 secondsand the 3640 SCM, rated at 3000w 120k rpm for 10 seconds.
      The later one would be sufficient for the small turbo I converted once (with gearing), but not for the one shown here.

    Would it not be better to gear the electric motor and supercharger with pulleys and a belt or a direct drive system using gears? Would eliminate the need for the electric motor to spin as fast to create the same torque at the supercharger.

    WOO-HOO...A whopping 3 whole PSI! Really? With all do respect, but why even bother with an electric system if that’s all you can expect. Where do you see this replacing or benefitting exhaust fed turbos or belt driven Superchargers, all types included? Electric motor powered/driven vehicles are strictly DC driven also.

      What do you mean by DC driven?
      Somewhere there is a DC energy source in all vehicles, yes. But the last time that stayed DC was around the 2000´s in electric forklifts.
      Today, just as this supercharger, they all run an inverter and brushless motors. Be that syncronous as in this case or asyncronous in case of most electric vehicles.
      And since the first audi SQ7 TDi in 2016, electric superchargers are series manufactured.

    Only 3psi??? That's horrible.. something is definately wrong. Maybe the rpm is not high enough. Try hooking up the motor to a standard supercharger

      4.5psi actually ;) The 1.5" valve is fully open, so that's 14.696 psi(atmospheric) + 4.5psi. So that's a Pretty decent gain
